Kath is still with Cheryl

Cheryl - If I could get out of this damn place I'd be round there in a flash to tell Vicki to get the hell away from there. As it is I'm stuck here and can't do much from here

Kath - Yes I know

Cheryl - I'm glad you've told me though, I can have a think and try to come up with something we can do.....maybe we can send the conquerors round to give this William dude a warning?

Kath - It's a nice idea Cheryl and frankly very tempting but i think it would only make things ten times worse. William would be angry and probably take it out on Vic even more

Cheryl - Hell yeah you're right...damn it I wish you could get Vic in here for a visit with me, I'd soon talk some sense into her

Kath - I know you would, but she wouldn't even speak to me on her doorstep I don't think I could get her in here to speak to you

Cheryl - Maybe we could....no no forget it it's a horrible idea

Kath - No go on, what is it?

Cheryl - Maybe we could set her up to come back here? That way we'd get her away from him and I could try to talk sense into her to stay away from him when she gets out again

Kath - Oh I don't think we could do that Cheryl...

Cheryl - No I agree, it was a horrible idea. Forget I said anything

Kath - Perhaps the only thing I can do is keep on going to see her, no matter how many times she sends me away or William sends me away I will be persistent

Ann is sitting in an interview room as Grace enters

Grace - Well Mrs Reynolds, had some time to have a think? Ready to tell me the truth yet?

Ann (hostile) - I already told you the truth. I know nothing about this, my car was stolen

Grace - Your car has been examined, there was no sign of the door being forced. Whoever was driving your car at the time of the accident used the keys...the same keys you still had in your possession.

Ann looks confused

Ann - I don't understand this!

Grace - Perhaps you had too much to drink did you? You were celebrating your son's release from prison? You had a good reason to be happy and want to celebrate, I understand totally

Ann - I would never drink and drive, no matter how happy I was. Your suggestion that I would offend me deeply

Grace - Most hit and runs occur when someone is drunk behind the wheel. They panic afterward, try to cover their tracks. Believe me, Mrs Reynolds the best thing to do is own up now. The courts won't go too harsh on you, it was an accident. You'll probably only go down for a year or two...

Ann suddenly looks horrified, like she has just realized something

Ann - Oh my god it must have been Jenny!

Grace - Pardon?

Ann - Jenny took the car! My god I thought she was acting strangely when I told her it had been stolen, she looked shifty

Grace - I see so now you're telling me Hartley took the car?

Ann - Yes it must have been her, that's the only explanation I can think of. She had been drinking yesterday, she was very drunk when I went to bed last night, I left my car keys on the table and she must have taken them

Grace -And why would she do that?

Ann - I don't know. Maybe she ran out of alcohol and went out to buy some more

Grace - That would be pretty dumb, wouldn't it? She has only just been released and by all accounts, she couldn't get out of there quick enough. When I saw her in there she looked a mess too, she clearly hated the place. Why would she put herself in a situation where she will end up straight back in there?

Ann - People do stupid things when their judgment is impaired by alcohol, you know that as well as I do inspector

Jim and Vera are busy down the bottom of the garden as the ever nosy Ron pocks his head over the fence

Ron - You do seem busy there

Jim smiles

Jim - We're making a start on the summer house

Ron - Need a hand?

Jim - Well that's very kind of you, Ron. If you're sure you want to help then the more the merrier. We'll get it done quicker that way

Ron -I'll be with you in five minutes

Ron disappears back behind his fence

Vera - What a nice helpful man

Jim - Yes he is isn't he...it's very nice of you to help too Vera

Vera - I want to help Jim

Jim (playful smile) - And maybe you're hoping Kath will let you stay if you do huh?

Vera has the tiniest hint of a smile on her face

Vera - You really have me down as being far more devious than I really am Jim. It's a good job I'm so thick-skinned or I'd be most offended...but on a more serious note what are you going to do about Kyle? you can't let him continue to blackmail you over our kiss

Jim - I know... it's bad enough that I gave him any money at all. Any more is out of the question

Vera - That little brat won't know when to stop, he'll just go on and on forever if you let him

Jim - Yes I know

Grace is with Jenny in her flat

Jenny - What's happening to Mrs Reynolds? Are you letting her go?

Grace - I'm afraid not Jenny, not yet anyway...

Jenny - Oh but I'm sure its all a dreadful mistake, Ann couldn't possibly have done it

Grace - Really? You seem sure of that, know anything about it do you?

Jenny (nervous) - Of course not

Grace lights a cigarette and walks around the room where he finds an empty whisky bottle on the floor and picks it up

Grace - I can see you like a drink, Miss Hartley? Perhaps you borrowed Mrs Reynolds's car when you were drunk?

Jenny shakes her head

Jenny - I didn't inspector...you can't try and pin a third crime on me that I didn't commit

Grace - Someone from this flat took the car and Mrs Reynolds denies that it was her

Jenny - Maybe the car was stolen as Ann said?

Grace -Impossible, you see whoever drove it last used the keys, the door was not forced. So it either had to be you, Mrs Reynolds, or someone else who had been here? Was anyone else there last night? Paul Reynolds maybe?

Jenny sighs and bows her head

Jenny - I didn't want to say this inspector, I was trying to protect Ann. But that empty whisky bottle is hers, she drinks like a fish. Last night I went to bed and left her in here drinking, a short while later I heard her go out and drive off in the car. If I could have had a chance I would have tried to stop her I swear, but like I say I was in bed and heard her leave before I had a chance to stop her.

Grace - Really? I never had Mrs Reynolds down as the type who would drink like a fish...even less drink and drive

Jenny - I know, it shocked me too when I first found out she had a problem. I think it was all the stress of Pip's death and Paul being banged up that drove her to drink

Grace takes a puff on his fag and looks thoughtful

Jim, Vera, and Ron are busy as Jeremy watches from his bedroom window. Kyle is with him

Kyle - What is so interesting out there bro?

Jeremy - It's them next door, busy building something and even Mr Gilbert is helping them

Kyle - So?

Jeremy - So reckon I'll go and ask if I can help

Kyle pulls a face

Kyle - Why the hell would you want to help them?

Jeremy - Cos there could be some cash in it for me! You should ask too

Kyle smirks

Kyle - Think I'll pass on that one, I already have enough cash to get by on

Jeremy - Well suit yourself, I'm still gonna ask for myself though

Jeremy leaves

Kath is knocking on Williams front door again

William answers and looks annoyed

William - You again? Listen lady I told you to stay away didn't i

Kath - I am Vicki's friend and I want to see that she is ok

William - She is perfectly fine...

Kath - I want to see her, please

William - That is out of the question

Kath - Why?

William - Because she is busy right now...

Kath - I know you knock her about a bit, get a thrill from it do you?

William looks outraged

William - Don't be ridiculous, I get no thrill out of it whatsoever! Victoria must learn the proper way to behave, the way god wishes her to behave! I have to enforce it somehow! Discipline her each time she does wrong so that eventually she will learn to do right! Hitting her is the only way to do it!

Kath - Don't even attempt to justify it to me! All it is is abuse and nothing more. I will go to the police about this!

William - You are free to do whatever you like, now good day

William tries to close the door but Kath prevents him

William - Please remove your foot from my doorway!

Kath - I want to see Vicki and I want to see her now!

William - And I told you you cannot see her! Now please remove your foot!

Kath does so with a sigh of annoyance

William - Thank you! Good day!

William closes the door

Vicki is locked in the bedroom as William unlocks the door and enters

William - That was your friend from prison again Victoria, she really is a nuisance

Vicki - I'm sorry she came again, maybe if you had let me out to talk to her I could have...

William shakes his head

William - In the future, if she comes here again I will deal with her, you will never speak to her again, she's bad for you

Vicki - Actually William she isn't, she's a good person and a good friend

William - She's a criminal

Vicki -Ex criminal and she won an appeal against her crime!

William - That may be so but she still served time in prison! You must not argue with me Victoria, you are not to communicate with that woman. You have a new life now and she is part of your past!

Vicki -Yes William I know...

William - Good! I just hope she doesn't come here anymore

Vicki - When will I be let out of here? This is just like being back in prison!

William - You'll be let out when I feel you have learned your lesson and not before!

Vicki - I've learned my lesson now

William - I doubt it, I believe you need a little longer

Vicki - Please William, I can't stand it locked in here, it's like being back in the pound in Wentworth

William - It's not meant to be fun Victoria! It's a punishment

Vicki turns angry

Vicki - You should have been a screw! You'd be good at that

William - What did you say? Being impertinent now? You're asking for further punishment Victoria!

Grace is back with Ann

Ann - Did you speak to Jenny?

Grace - I did indeed

Ann - Did she own up?

Grace - Fraid not no

Ann - But it must have been her!

Grace - She told us about your drink problem Mrs Reynolds

Ann looks shocked

Ann - My what? That's a lie!

Grace - And about how you took a drive late last night!

Ann - That's a lie!

Grace - So you keep saying. But I work with facts Mrs Reynolds. The fact is it was your car involved in the hit and run, the fact is you were still in possession of your keys, the fact is I found evidence of heavy drinking at Hartley's flat...

Ann - Yes of course you did, and that's because Hartley herself is a heavy drinker! It's her flat, I'm just a guest. Her flat her whisky...

Grace - And your car that she took without asking and ran someone down and killed them?

Ann - Right

Grace - So you say, and you would say that if you were trying to avoid going down for a crime wouldn't you Mrs Reynolds! You must be pretty worried right now, I would be too if I was in your shoes. Prison governors can't be very popular among the inmates

Ann looks worried

Connie and Ailsa are in the kitchen

Ailsa - Has she tried anything?

Connie - Well not yet but then I've only just been moved in with her. Who knows what she's going to try after lights out, she makes it pretty clear she likes me

Ailsa - I can't believe Raymond has done this

Connie - I can, she said she would get revenge on me and I knew she wasn't joking when she said it

Ailsa - She wouldn't have done this if Mandy was still here, she has to wait until she was gone

Connie - She won't stop there either, she'll be after you too Gran

Ailsa - She doesn't scare me...anyway she was to blame for Mand dying, she'll pay for that I'll see to it

Connie - Be careful Gran she'll hurt ya!

Ailsa - Rubbish, I'm tougher than I look me!

Wentworth General

Kelly is sitting up in bed with a policewoman sat next to her

The policewoman has her head in a newspaper

Kelly - Geeze ya don't say much do ya!

The policewoman - I'm here to supervise you, not socialize with you. Frankly, I'd much rather be out on the beat than stuck here babysitting you

Kelly - But while we're stuck with each other we may as well talk and pass the time

Policewoman - I have nothing to talk to you about thank you

The policewoman returns to her newspaper

Kelly - Well I don't even know why they think I need to be supervised, I can hardly get far with my leg bandaged up can i

Policewoman - It's just a precaution, we can't put anything past types like you

Kelly - Types like me? What type is that then?

Policewoman - Devious criminals, that type

The dr enters

Dr - Good morning Miss Webster, how are you feeling today?

Kelly - I've felt better doc it has to be said

Dr - It's to be expected that you'll feel a bit rough for a day or two

Policewoman - Any idea when she can be sent back to Wentworth?

Dr - Well there's no reason why she can't go back later today

Policewoman - Really? that soon?

Dr - Of course, she'll have to rest up for a while once she gets there, she can't be expected to return to normal duties right away

Policewoman - That's fantastic, I was expecting to be stuck here for days and I can think of much better places I'd rather be

Kelly - That's funny, so can i

Janice is in the governor's office with Dwyer

Dwyer is irate

Dwyer - It's just one thing after another isn't it Miss Raymond!

Janice - Yes it was a rather unfortunate incident

Dwyer - What I'd like to know is how Slater even got into solitary in the first place

Janice - Naturally that will be looked into

Dwyer - You're damn right it will be

Janice - But frankly Wentworth is now free of one of its biggest troublemakers. One less to worry about I say

Dwyer - That's as may be but it still creates one hell of a scandal

Janice - I doubt the public really care that much, it is only prisoners we're talking about when all is said and done

Dwyer - It still reflects badly on my department! And we could have had two deaths! I hear Webster was stabbed in the leg!

Janice - Yes that was a close shave that one! Any news on Webster this morning?

Dwyer - Yes she may be well enough to return here later today but only under the instructions she goes straight to the infirmary

Janice - Yes of course

Dwyer - And the department has ordered her month in solitary to be canceled

Janice looks surprised

Janice - Why?

Dwyer - We don't want her kicking up a stink about what happened to her. she could sue us if she had a mind to! It is to be hoped that if we show her this one act of kindness she may decide to let it lie

Janice - I see

Dwyer - Any objections Miss Raymond?

Janice - No, it's not for me to argue with a departmental decision

Dwyer - Indeed, how right you are

Janice - But I am surprised the department is happy to let her get away with taking a prisoner's eye out...twice!

Dwyer - Yes well the second occasion was self-defense wasn't it. Slater stabbed her in the leg, she tried to kill her, Webster defended herself. Frankly, she did us all a favor blinding Slater like that

Janice - Yes I suppose you're right

Dwyer - So as far as I'm concerned the matters closed now

Janice -Yes of course... I would like to discuss something else now

Dwyer - And what is that?

Janice - Your next payment to me of one grand is due

Dwyer - Now look here...

Janice cuts him off

Janice - I believe I made the terms clear enough to you at the time. A grand every week without fail or Wendy gets a copy of the photos. If you were hoping I'd forget our arrangement please think again. I want my next payment deposited into my account today, please

Dwyer looks red in the face with anger

Reception

Meg and Matt are there as a new prisoner is brought in - Ann

Meg looks at her in shock

GATESLAM

PART 2

Connie and Ailsa are busy in the kitchen as Janice enters

Janice - Mmmm something smells good ladies!

Ailsa flies over in a rage

Ailsa -I'm glad you're here Raymond! I wish to have a word with you

Janice - Well I'm all ears Ailsa

Ailsa - Why have you put my dear little Connie in a cell with Cunningham, don't you realize she has been pestering her? She wants to get it on with her and Con ain't interested!

Janice shakes her head with sorrow and looks at Connie

Janice - Oh dear me! Has she tried anything Slater?

Connie - Not yet, but she will I'm sure of it

Janice - Oh dear, what a worry it must be for you!

Ailsa - I want her moved out at once! You hear me!

Janice - Yes I hear you and frankly I am horrified by your lack of respect towards me and the fact that you think I will respond to demands

Ailsa - Look Miss Raymond please? Connie is just a kid, if you want to pick on someone pick on me!

Janice chuckles

Janice - I will in good time, don't you fret about that

Janice turns to go

Connie - So you won't move me away from her?

Janice turns back with a grin

Janice - That's right! She's welcome to you. I told you you'd pay girl

Connie - You've already killed my sister you bitch! Isn't that enough

Janice - Me? I didn't touch her. Webster took her eye out...

Connie - That's not what Mandy told gran, she told her you did it not Webster

Ailsa nods her head

Ailsa - Yeah that's right!

Connie - And because of that she died

Janice shakes her head

Janice - She died because your granny helped her die

Connie - That's rubbish, gran would never kill Mandy

Janice -She did and she admitted it to Thorne

Janice looks at Ailsa and shakes her head

Janice - Keeping this piece of information from Connie? Really Ailsa I'm surprised at you, I thought you'd realize she would have to find out sooner or later and it's a good thing too as I feel the poor girl has a right to know, don't you?

Janice leaves

Ailsa and Connie are alone

Connie looks horrified

Connie - Tell me she's lying gran! You'd never have done that to Mand right?

Ailsa takes hold of Connie's hand, she is crying

Ailsa - Listen, love, she was blind, she asked me...no she begged me to help her die

Connie pulls away from Ailsa in disgust

Connie - No! No, it's not true!

Ailsa - It's what she wanted love, you have to understand

Connie - You killed my sister! Your own granddaughter! What kind of monster are you!

Connie runs out of the kitchen in tears

Ailsa (crying) - Connie love! Come back, please.....
