The two police officers have split up the fight between Jim and Des

Policeman 1 - Fighting like this really? Aren't you both a little old for this type of schoolboy carry-on?

Shanice - YEAH WELL HE SMASHED UP OUR STEREO! THAT'S CRIMINAL DAMAGE AND YOU SHOULD BLEEDING WELL DO HIM FOR IT!

Policeman 1 looks at Jim

Policeman 1 - Is this correct Sir?

Des - OF COURSE, IT'S DAMN CORRECT! ARE YOU CALLING MY WIFE A LIAR!

Policeman 2 - Please allow the gentleman to answer for himself Mr Battersby

Shanice scoffs

Shanice - Gentleman? You've gotta be kidding, Jimbo is just a thug who smashes up other people's property for no good reason! Ever thought of taking some anger management, Jimbo? You sure could use some!

Policeman 2 - Please Mrs Battersby...

Jim - Yes it's true I smashed their stereo, but only so I could get a bit of peace! They kept us awake last night with their racket and I can't have another night without sleep

Shanice - You're just a stick in the mud Jimbo! No one else complains!

Policeman 2 - Actually madam they do...we've had complaints from several other people about the noise

Des - Bleeding miserable mongrels! Not one of them has the guts to come here and complain to our faces, they have to tell tales to the pigs behind our backs

Kath chips in from the other side of the fence

Kath - We had the guts to complain to your faces and it was quite obvious you had no intentions to take any notice of us

Shanice - Oh rubbish Karen! We invited you to join us, you can't say much fairer than that can you!

Des - Yeah and I bet you rang the pigs before you came to the fence too

Shanice - Yeah! I bet you're right too Des!

Kath - We didn't! We came to try and talk calmly to you

Shanice - Well I want to know what will happen about our stereo! Jimbo shouldn't be allowed to get away with this!

Exterior shot of Kath and Jim's in daylight

Inside Kath is sat alone at the table playing with a bowl of porridge, the phone rings and she snatches it up quickly

Kath - Jim? Is that you?...oh thank god, what's happening?.....

.....Jim is on the other end

Jim - They are releasing me on bail

Kath - On bail?

Jim - Yes, they have charged me

Kath - Oh god, what will happen now?

Jim - Nothing, for now, I have to attend court on the 18th. I can't worry about that too much right now, I just need to get to work quickly, I'm already late. Can you come to the station and pick me up, and bring my suit, please?

Kath - Yes, of course, I'll come right away

Shanice and Des are sitting in their lounge both smoking

Shanice - I bet the lousy mongrel will get off with a caution or something

Des - He better not! No one smashes our property and gets away with it! He should at least be ordered to pay us some bleeding compo!

Shanice - Yes too bleeding right!

Des - Anyway love it's time I was off to work

Shanice - I'm so proud of you for getting a job, Des!

Des - Said I would didn't i

Kath is driving Jim to work

Kath - Did you manage to get some sleep in the end?

Jim - Yes a little, the bed was very uncomfortable

Kath - Yes, I sympathize entirely...

Jim - I can't believe they arrested me but not that pair! Where is the damn justice in this country?

Kath - Oh I sympathize entirely there too! I had to serve 12 months before I got any justice .....you shouldn't have done that though Jim

Jim - I was fed up, I just lost it

Kath - I know and I don't blame you, but look at the mess we're in now. This won't help anything

Jim - Yes I know love

Kath - We'll have to buy them a new stereo

Jim looks outraged

Jim - Why the hell should we? They showed us no consideration, they asked for it to get smashed up!

Kath - Look love I agree with you, I really do. But you've got to go to court over this, it will look good for you if we have been shown to replace the damaged stereo....plus despite what's happened I still want to try and get on with them if we can

Jim sighs

Jim - As usual you're right

Kath pulls up outside the gates

Jim - Thanks love, you've been a great help this morning, I'll see you at home later

Kath - Erm actually Jim, I was wondering if I could come in with you if that's alright? There's someone I want to see

Jim looks surprised

Jim - Who do you want to see?

Kath - Don't worry I just want to see g'day to Cheryl

Jim - You must never tell her about us, remember that

Kath - Don't worry I won't

Jim - And that other favour I did you, you must never tell anyone it was me who gave you that address either

Kath - I said I won't Jim...you have to trust me

Jim - I do trust you, love, I'm sorry if it seems like I don't, I just worry too much that's all

Kath - You don't mind if I keep the car for the day do you?

Jim - no love that's fine, I'm sure it won't hurt me to get the bus just this once

Des is dragging Jeremy out to the van with him

Jeremy - Why have I got to come with you?

Des - Because I say so, boy!

Jeremy - But I should be at school dad!

Des bursts out laughing

Des - Since when has that been a concern of yours boy!

Jeremy - Well why have I always got to be the one to come with you? Why never Kyle?

Des - Kyle is a good boy unlike you, you're a useless little sod!

Jeremy - Kyle is always making trouble! He's hardly a good boy!... He's a jerk!

Des punches Jeremy in the face, Jeremy whines

Jeremy - What was that for dad?

Des - It was cos you keep whining boy! Also, you must never speak badly of your brother! NOW GET YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE BUTT IN THE VAN YOU LITTLE BASTARD!

Jeremy looks close to tears as he climbs into the passenger seat

Jim is in the staff toilets changing into his suit as Matt comes in and looks surprised

Matt - Jim, I'm sorry...

Jim - It's ok Matt...I'm the acting governor today and needed to change into a suit

Matt - I know, it's not like you to arrive at work and not already be dressed and ready to go

Matt pauses for a second

Matt - Well except when you were...you know...

Jim - I'm not drinking again mate...look something happened last night but it's a long story, I'll fill you in later ok

Matt nods his head

Matt - Ok...

Kath is waiting on the grounds as Cheryl is brought out by an unknown officer

Cheryl - Hey mate! good to see ya!

They embrace warmly

Kath - Good to see you too Cheryl

Cheryl - So how are you getting on? Settling back into life in the real world ok I hope

Kath sighs

Kath - Having a few teething problems actually but I'm hoping they will sort themselves out in time

Cheryl - Really? Anything I can help with?

Kath smiles

Kath -I don't think so but thanks for the offer...how is life here?

Cheryl - Dull as ever, still we finally have a therapist for the women

Kath - Yeah? That's great news. I'm surprised Raymond agreed to that

Cheryl - It was a department decision, she had no say in it

Kath - Well anyway Chez there was something I wanted to ask you

Cheryl - Yeah? What's that?

Kath - I'm going to visit Vicki today and I wondered if you wanted me to pass on any messages

Cheryl looks surprised

Cheryl - You're visiting Vic? How did you know her address to find her? She never gave much away about her life away from Wentworth

Kath - She gave me her parent's address before she left here

Cheryl - Cheeky bugger! She never gave me anything and I asked loads of times. I wanted to keep in touch once she left!

Kath - Well I can pass her a message to ask her to come and see you if you'd like?

Cheryl - Yeah I'd like that, I often think about her and wonder how she's getting on

Kath - Me too

Des and Jeremy are on a building site talking to a man

Des - I need a favour Bill....but it's not legit

Bill - What is it, Des?

Des - It concerns your pile of rubble over there

We see a giant pile of rubble

Des - I know how I can take it off your hands Bill....that's if you're interested?

The rec room

Lisa is there with Cheryl, Kate, Louise, Brumby, and a few other unknown prisoners

Lisa smiles at them all

Lisa - Thank you for coming ladies, as I explained this is your induction session for the befriender project

Kate - Yes a most worthy cause I must say

Lisa - Thank you....so I would like to start by asking you why you feel you would be suitable as a befriender, we will go around the room so you can all answer individually, I'd like to start with you Michelle if you don't mind

Brumby sits head bowed

Lisa - It's ok Michelle, you don't need to be shy or scared

Brumby - I know what it's like to need someone to talk to don't i. Feeling alone in a place like this is the worst feeling ever. Maybe if I hadn't felt so alone at times I wouldn't have hurt myself so many times

Lisa - You are referring to your self-harm?

Brumby nods and pulls up her sleeves to reveal many scars and cigarette burns

Brumby - I'm not saying that it would have prevented me from doing all of this, but I reckon maybe half of these I might have thought twice about if I had had someone to talk to at the time, someone to tell me I wasn't alone, that someone cared

Lisa studies her arms and looks shocked

Lisa - Is this why you wear long sleeves? So that you can disguise those terrible scars?

Brumby looks ashamed, she bows her head and nods

Lisa - It's nothing to be ashamed of

Brumby - Yes it is! It's sick and evil and wrong! Who does that to their own body? We don't find it acceptable if another person abuses us in this way so why would it be acceptable to abuse ourselves in this way?

Lisa - Someone who is in a bad place and is crying out for help would do that...or someone who wants the physical pain to even out the mental pain, there are a million reasons

Brumby - It wasn't a cry for help, I never did it for that reason

Cheryl - Why did you do it then?

Brumby - I did it just to feel again...just to feel something, anything. I felt so numb, like I wasn't alive anymore, just an empty shell. I did it to remind myself I was still alive

Cheryl - You never showed any of us how you felt. You always seemed like nothing much really bothered you

Brumby - I know...I built a shell around myself to stop others from getting in. I only let Spike in and then I lost her anyway...and Lizzie. After that, I didn't want to let anyone else in, in case I lost them too

Lisa - And how do you think you may have felt if you had had someone to talk to?

Brumby - I don't know, it may have helped maybe

Lisa - Imagine if you can stop someone else from feeling that way and hurting themselves, how would you feel?

Brumby - I'd feel pleased. I wouldn't want anyone else feeling that way, it's horrible

Brumby breaks down in tears

Brumby - So horrible!

Cheryl leaps up and gives her a hug

Brumby - I'm so sorry for everything! For all the lies, for being such a bitch, all of it

Cheryl - It's alright Michelle! it's alright

Cheryl continues to comfort Brumby as she cries

Back with Des, Jeremy, and Bill

Bill - Oh I dunno Des, it's illegal you know!

Des - So who's gonna know it was you?

Bill - People could see my truck

Des - So we do it under the cover of darkness right? No one will see, no one will know...come on Bill, do this favor for us and I'll owe you, big time, mate

Bill nods his head

Bill - Yeah ok then

Des slaps him on the back

Des - Nice one mate!

The governor's office

The shaven-headed Chrissie is there with Jim

Jim - How are you feeling Chrissie?

Chrissie shrugs

Chrissie - Ok I suppose...look Mr Fletcher where is Mrs Powell I ain't seen her in days and she's been bleeding good to me. She's the only one who understands what I've been through

Jim - I'm sorry Latham but Mrs Powell isn't here anymore, she has been transferred to Woodridge

Chrissie looks upset

Chrissie - She never even said goodbye!

Jim - She left in a hurry, Latham...

Chrissie - Yeah well she could have found the time to say goodbye if she wanted to!

Jim - Well anyway she's gone....now what I want to talk to you about is how you feel about returning to the others, I don't think it's healthy to keep you in isolation forever

Chrissie - Yeah I'm ready to go back now

Jim - I thought so too...and most of the officers state that your mood has been stable lately. I really would advise you against making up any more lies though

Chrissie - Yes Mr Fletcher

Jim - And one other thing....you may have to be prepared for a few comments regarding your shaved head. My best advice would be not to react to it, don't let the women provoke you into a fight or any other trouble

The laundry

Cheryl, Brumby, Louise, Kate, and others are there as Matt shows Chrissie in

Matt - Latham has been released from Isolation...Gibson give her something to do won't you

Cheryl - Yes Mr Brewer

Matt leaves again

The women stare at Chrissie

Kate - This is an advanced case I'm sorry to say

Chrissie looks confused

Chrissie - An advanced case of what?

Kate - Alopecia

Chrissie - Alopecia? What ya bleeding on about? I ain't got Alopecia

Kate - Of course, had you come to me earlier I may have been able to do something more to help

Chrissie - Who the bleeding hell are you anyway? You're off ya bleeding rocker!

Cheryl steps forwards

Cheryl - A word please Chrissie, outside

Cheryl and Chrissie leave the laundry

Chrissie - Who is she? She's a bleeding nutcase!

Cheryl - Then you should get on fine with her shouldn't you

Chrissie - What do you mean by that?

Cheryl - I mean the lying about Tess hanging...I mean shaving off your hair. You can hardly judge others...

Chrissie - I didn't lie about Tess hanging, that is true

Cheryl - Listen Latham...

Chrissie cuts her off

Chrissie - And as for my head, well maybe I was sick of having hair. It was entirely my choice to shave it bald

Cheryl - I'm not disputing that it's your own choice, but if you looked at it and saw how ghastly it looks you'd...

Chrissie cuts her off a second time

Chrissie - I've looked at it a number of times and I think it looks fine, so I'll thank you to keep your opinions to yourself

Chrissie marches back into the laundry

Kath knocks at a door and after a moment Mrs McPherson answers

Mrs McPherson - Yes, can I help you?

Kath - I've come to see Vicki, I was given this address

Mrs McPherson looks at Kath with suspicion

Mrs McPherson - Who are you? What do you want with my Victoria? If you're one of her old cronies from prison she does not need you back in her life leading her down sinful pathways anymore

Kath - Oh no nothing like that at all...I am from the church Mrs McPherson...we run a group for ex-prisoners to help them repent and not return to their criminality. The PRG gives us the addresses of recently released prisoners and Victoria was one of them. We simply wondered if Victoria would like to attend our group for some help

Mrs McPherson beams with delight

Mrs McPherson - What a wonderful idea! Of course, my husband and I have worked tirelessly in the past months to fix Victoria and our efforts have paid off, but some extra help is always welcome. She doesn't live with us anymore, she lives with her new husband William, a most pleasant and decent young man.. so I shall give you her new address

Kath - Oh thank you very much Mrs McPherson, we shall do all we can to help her I assure you

GATESLAM

PART 2

The women are on an outside rec as Chrissie sits alone by Lizzie's tree looking downbeat

Cheryl joins her and sits beside her

Chrissie - Leave me alone Cheryl, please...if you've come to give me a hard time please just don't, I'm not up for the hassle today I just want to be left alone

Cheryl - I haven't come to hassle you, I'm worried about you believe it or not

Chrissie - Yeah well no need, I'm fine

Cheryl - Are you?

Chrissie - Where's Bea anyway? Ain't seen her all day, is she in the pound?

Cheryl - Bea's been transferred to Blackmoor love

Chrissie looks upset

Chrissie - Bleeding marvelous, first I find Mrs Powell has left and now Bea too....she didn't come to say goodbye either

Cheryl - She didn't get a chance to say goodbye to anyone love, she was just shipped out of here very abruptly

Chrissie - So that's it now, Bea's gone and all my old mates are gone, I'm all alone

Cheryl - No, it doesn't have to be so. I'll be your friend but just don't ever pull a stunt like the one about Tess again that's all I ask

Chrissie looks at Cheryl with a grim expression on her face

Chrissie - That was no stunt, I told you. She was hanging and someone must have moved the body. I wouldn't lie about something like that Cheryl I swear it on my daughter's dead body. I don't know what happened to the body but it was there, I know what

I saw. I didn't make it up, I didn't imagine it, I saw it. Please you have to believe me, no one else does and I'm sick of knowing I told the truth and being called a liar for it

Cheryl looks concerned

Kath knocks at a door and after a moment Vicki answers. Vicki is sporting a black eye

Vicki looks shocked to see her

Vicki - Kath? What are you doing here?

Kath - I came to see how you are

Vicki - How did you get this address?

Kath - Your mother gave it to me

Vicki - Really? I'm surprised...

Kath - I made up a tale about being from the church

Vicki - Yeah well you'll have to go, William will be annoyed to see you here

Kath - Will he? Why? Are you not allowed visits from friends?

Vicki - Look it's just best if you go now...I read about your appeal in the paper and I'm pleased for ya but I think its best we don't associate with each other out here, best we both make a clean break and put Wentworth behind for good

Kath - How did you get the black eye? Did he give that to you?

Vicki - Don't be silly of course he didn't

Kath - Next you'll tell me your just accident-prone Vic...

Vicki - Yeah well maybe I am...

Kath - Bumped your face on the washing line I suppose?

Vicki - Yeah something like that

William appears in the doorway

William - Who is this Victoria?

Vicki - It's no one, it's just...

Kath - I'm Kath, one of Vicki's old friends...I came to see how she is

William - An old friend from where? Not from prison, I hope

Kath - As a matter of fact yes we met in prison...

William - Victoria is fine and she doesn't need her old friends anymore, especially ones she met in prison. Good day to you!...

William pulls Vicki back inside and slams the door shut.

Chrissie is still by Lizzie's tree as Brumby joins her

Brumby - I miss her too

Chrissie - Eh?

Brumby - Lizzie...I miss her too

Brumby smiles at Chrissie, Chrissie smiles back
