The women are lined up for muster. Jim and Colleen are present.
Colleen - Gibson, Webster, Anderson, Latham, Kennedy, Balzano, and Patterson laundry...
Jim has been scanning the group
Jim - Where is Patterson?
Cheryl shrugs
Cheryl - I have no idea Mr Fletcher
Kelly - If you ask me she is off somewhere causing trouble. She's a real troublemaker that one, lazy too
Colleen - Ok ladies move off to your allocated work areas
The women move off, looking as unenthusiastic as ever
Colleen - let's look for Patterson
Jim - Yes and when we find her it's time to lay down the law, tell her that she needs to start behaving herself. She seems to think the rules here don't apply to her, it's not on
Colleen nods in agreement
The laundry
Chrissie and Tracy are by the driers
Tracy - Thought any more about what I told you last night?
Chrissie looks blank
Tracy - About teaching smith a lesson remember?
Chrissie - Oh yeah that...it's like I told you I don't blame Bea for the way she feels about me
Tracy - I didn't have you down for a fool Latham...don't you realize that unless you stand up to Bea now she's going to carry on trying to kill you?
Chrissie - Well she can't do much from isolation, can she?
Tracy - Use your brain Latham, you really think she won't get let out of there eventually? Of course, she will, then she's gonna be out to get ya again ain't she....show her you won't be an easy target now while you can
Chrissie - So even if I do agree to this how do we get at her in isolation anyway?
Tracy - You can just leave all that to me, I have a plan
Chrissie - Why do you want to help me get Smith anyway, you barely know me?
Tracy - Wouldn't be doing it for you would I, doing it for myself because I don't like her, she's been bossing me around you know. Calls herself a friend but she just wanted me to be her little slave.....so are you in?
Chrissie looks unsure
Chrissie - Yeah I'm in
Tracy - Good choice Chrissie...we'll soon show Smith whose boss eh
Chrissie still looks uncomfortable as Tracy glances over at Gina and Ronnie and gives them a thumbs up
Blackmoor prison
Ann is in the governor's office as Jenny is shown in by a surly looking male officer
Ann - Thanks Bruce....can you bring Marie Winter up to see me too, please
Bruce - Yes Mrs Reynolds
Bruce leaves again
Jenny - Does he ever smile?
Ann chuckles
Ann - Not often I'm afraid.....would you like a drink?
Jenny - No I have had enough tea already this morning
Ann - It wasn't tea I had in mind
Ann shows Jenny a bottle of whisky with a cheeky smile. Jenny smiles back
Jenny - Now you're talking
Ann pours the drinks
Ann - So you said on the phone you think Winter can help us?
Jenny - Yes I do. I did some digging and here's what I found out...
Jim arrives at the laundry and scans the room
Cheryl - What are ya looking so wound up about Mr Fletcher? The laundry still looks the same as it ever did
Jim - Enough of your cheek Gibson, I was looking to see if Patterson was here
Cheryl - You mean you still haven't found her?
Jim - No and if you ladies know where she is I suggest you tell me right now
Advertisement
Kelly - Why would we know where she is?
Jim- It could be one of your silly pranks...your idea of a joke. But I must warn you now that we don't regard prisoners being AWOL as a joke, it is regarded as a very serious matter so if you do know where she is it's in your best interests to tell me now
Kelly - Well I don't know where she is, can't speak for the others though
Jim - You share a cell with her Webster if anyone is likely to know where she is it's you
Kelly - Have you tried looking under the bed, Mr. Fletcher?
Kelly and Cheryl burst out laughing and Jim looks concerned
Colleen is with Vera in the governor's office
Colleen - So Mr. Fletchers gone to the laundry to check if she's turned up there if she hasn't then I don't know where she is, we've searched the entire prison
Vera - Then you can't have looked hard enough Mrs Powell, she must be hiding somewhere
Colleen - She wasn't we checked everywhere
Vera - She has to be in this prison somewhere
Colleen - She could have escaped
Vera shakes her head in annoyance
Vera - That's what they want us to think...it's one of their pranks I know it is
Colleen - So you want Mr Fletcher and I to search the prison again?
Vera -Yes Mrs. Powell I do
Colleen sighs and looks annoyed
Colleen - I see...
Vera - And this time make sure you find her!
Marie is with Ann and Jenny in Ann's office
Jenny smiles at her sweetly
Jenny - It's nice to meet you, Marie, I've heard so much about you I already feel like I know you
Marie - Heard so much about me from who? You're from the department I suppose? Well if you're here to tell me I'll never be up for parole big deal I already know it
Ann - Miss Hartley is here to talk about Joan Ferguson Winter
Marie looks taken off guard
Marie - Ferguson?
Jenny - Yes that's right
Marie - Well what about her?
Jenny - Would you describe yourself as a close friend of hers?
Marie cackles
Marie - Do me a favour love, I hate that bitch
Jenny - That's funny because according to my source you did business with her recently
Ann - Yes apparently I have you to thank for having the job of the governor here...if it hadn't been for you Mr Murphy might still be governor.....you and Ferguson that is
Marie - Sure I was responsible for rioting and bringing Murphy down, but Ferguson had nothing to do with it
Jenny - That's not what my information says...
Marie - Than your information is wrong love
Jenny - Now look Winter all we want to do is nail Ferguson, there will be no repercussions for you I promise you that. Wouldn't you like to see that woman brought down?
Marie shrugs
Marie - She never did anything much to me, I knew how to handle her, in fact, if anything she's done me one or two favours along the way....and anyway she is no longer part of the prison service and so no threat to myself or my women. Now if that's all?
Ann - Yes that's all
Marie smirks
Marie - Sorry I couldn't help ya more girls
Ann - One last thing before you go, Winter...Morgan arrived back here yesterday and I am aware of your history with her, I wouldn't like any more bother between you both, is that clear?
Marie - Oh no worries Mrs Reynolds, it's as clear as water...
Marie swaggers out with a smirk, Ann watches her go with an angry glare
Jenny - Blast! what a waste of time that was
Ann -I didn't really expect to get much out of that one, to be honest, but it was worth a try. What shall we do now?
Jenny - I think it's time I searched Ferguson's house, I found out she is not living there right now and its the perfect opportunity for me to get in there and have a hunt around
Ann looks concerned
Ann - Are you sure that's a good idea?
Jenny - Yes it will be fine, don't worry. There's a chance she may have left something incriminating there, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't at least check it out
Marie is on the phone
Marie - Yes, let Ferguson know
Marie hangs up and turns to Bruce
Marie - Cheers Brucie love
Bruce - Just don't ask me to do it again ok?
Marie - Oh now be nice Brucie, you want to hold on to your job don't you?
Bruce - Look Winter I won't let you blackmail me anymore
Marie - Ok fair enough.....I hope you like being on the dole Brucie, lets see Mrs Reynolds right now, shall we?
Bruce looks scared
Bruce - No Marie, please!
Marie - Good lad...now tell me about Morgan Brucie, like which unit shes in
The women are in the dining room. Tracy is sitting with Chrissie
Tracy - We do it after we finish this muck
Chrissie looks shocked
Chrissie - That soon?
Tracy - Yes any reason why not?
Chrissie shrugs
Chrissie - thought I'd have a bit more time to prepare that's all
Tracy - Now is the right time to do it.....
Chrissie - How the bleeding hell do we get the keys to get in there?
Tracy - You can leave all that to me, Chrissie, I always have a way around a problem
Vera arrives in the dining room with Jim and Colleen, they all look grave
Colleen - Attention please ladies, the governor wishes to speak to you
The room goes quiet, all eyes on Vera
Vera - I want to know where Patterson is and I want to know now
Chrissie - You still haven't found her? Bleeding hell the bitch is loud enough!
Everyone chuckles
Vera - QUIET! THIS IS NO LAUGHING MATTER! IF I FIND OUT ANY OF YOU KNOW WHERE SHE IS HIDING YOU'RE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE!
Jenny is sneaking around the side of Joan's house
Matt is in a quiet spot as Kelly arrives to meet him
Matt - You took your time I wasn't sure if you'd come
Kelly - I got held up by that Bennett woman, she came to the laundry to talk to everyone
Matt - About Patterson going missing??
Kelly - Yeah.....
Matt - Did you bring it?
Kelly - Yes....gord I can see patience isn't your strong point Matt
Matt - Just excited to see it that's all
Kelly hands Matt something, he looks excited and examines the mysterious object with joy
Matt - Waited years for something like this
Kelly - I thought Henderson was bad but you're much sicker than he is Matt
Matt grins
Matt - I'm a nice enough lad ain't I? I treat the girls ok and Mr. Fletcher has always thought highly of me
Kelly - Yeah you're nice and friendly on the surface and then I find out what you're into.....we'd best keep this between ourselves, Matt, for your sake more than mine
Matt - Yes I know Kelly...and thanks for your understanding
Kelly - Well each to their own I suppose....who am I to judge anyone?
Matt - Yes that's the point, you and I are the same, Kelly. We are just in different uniforms that's all
Jenny is in Joan's bedroom searching around when she hears voices and laughter coming from another part of the flat, she freezes on the spot...
.....Sally is in the living room with a man, the room looks a tip
Sally - Sorry for the mess love, it ain't my place you know, just keeping an eye on it for a friend
The man - And what will your friend say when they come back and see this mess?
Sally shrugs
Sally - Ain't my fault if they choose to abandon their home is it.....I'm claiming squatters' rights ain't i. Already had the locks changed
The man - You're such a bitch Sally
Sally - Nah I ain't like I say I have squatters' rights. Joanie will understand, she and I go back a long way
Jenny has been listening in the hallway, she quietly sneaks to the backdoor and leaves
Tracy is waiting as Kelly meets her and hands her a set of keys
Tracy - So you got 'em ok?
Kelly - Sure I did...Brewer was shall we say not paying attention to his keys, he never does when he's with me
Tracy - You share something special do ya?
Kelly - What we share is our business
Tracy - Sure, I get ya. Far be it for me to interfere
Kelly - Look I don't know what you want these keys for but whatever it is, if you do get caught you do not mention my part in it I hope we're clear on that?
Tracy - Sure no worries, I don't lag.....thanks for doing this for me
Kelly - It's not a problem, I'm being paid afterall
Tracy - Yes, you'll get your payment later
Kelly - Good....now I must go
Kelly leaves and Tracy jiggles the keys in front of her face and smiles
Joan is with her associate in a park
The man - Her names Jenny Hartley and according to Winter she's been sniffing around on behalf of Ann Reynolds
Joan - Has she approached you?
The man - She did approach me, yes, but I didn't say anything to her
Joan gives him a dubious look
The man - I didn't Joan I swear, I am loyal to my clients
Joan - Yeah yeah alright, I believe you
The man - What shall we do about this Hartley woman? She could cause a lot of problems for us
Joan - Find out her address, to begin with
The man - And then what?
Joan - Give it to me
The man - You don't want me to deal with her myself?
Joan shakes her head
Joan - I would like to deal with Hartley myself
Chrissie is waiting as Tracy meets her and shows her the keys
Chrissie - I'd bleeding well love to know how you got those
Tracy - I told you that's my business
Chrissie - Yeah sure, I'm curious that's all
Tracy - Come on let's go and sort out Smith
They rush off down the corridor
GATESLAM
PART 2
Marsh house
Meg is in the office with Spike and Graham
Graham - Margaret and I wanted to talk to you about Joan, Meg
Meg - Oh and what about her?
Spike - Graham and I are worried she may still be taking drugs and wondered if you've seen any evidence of it?
Meg - Nothing concrete but frankly I have my suspicions yes
Graham - Have you any idea where she is now? She keeps disappearing out for long periods of time and is very evasive whenever we ask her about it
Meg - No, no I have no idea where she goes, shes evasive with me too
Graham - I think we should search her room while she isn't here, what do you think Meg?
Meg - I think the exact same thing
Spike looks horrified
Spike - We can't search a resident's room without their knowledge or consent Graham and you know that. A resident has to be present and they have to give permission
Graham - Ferguson won't give us permission and you know it, she's a difficult woman
Spike - I'm sure she would if she had nothing to hide....and if she didn't we have the right to ask her to leave
Graham rolls his eyes
Graham - And we both know you wouldn't do that because you're far too soft Margaret
Spike snaps
Spike (angry) - We don't search her room without permission from her and that's the end of it
Spike marches out of the office
Graham and Meg are left behind, Graham smiles at Meg
Tracy and Chrissie arrive at Isolation and Tracy opens the gate loudly
Chrissie (Whispering) - Being a bit bleeding noisy ain't ya? She'll know we're coming
Tracy - She won't because she's been drugged, I saw to that
They arrive at the cell and Bea is lying asleep in the bed
Tracy shakes her, she groans but doesn't wake up properly
Tracy - See?
Chrissie rolls her sleeves up
Chrissie - So now we batter her right? She'll bleeding wake up then eh
Chrissie gives out a naughty giggle. Tracy giggles too
Tracy - Nah we don't batter her
Tracy takes a knife out of her pocket
Tracy - We kill her don't we...or should I say you do
Chrissie (horrified) - What ya bleeding on about? I didn't come here to kill her, bash her that's all
Tracy - Sorry Latham but I have to kill Smith...and I have to let you take the blame, life's a bitch isn't it
Chrissie - Stuff that!
Chrissie turns to leave and finds the doorway being blocked by Gina and Ronnie
Graham and Meg are in Joan's room searching
Meg - Are you sure we should be doing this? Margaret won't like it at all
Graham - Yes I'm sure....she's too soft on Joan
Meg - I agree...but even so
Graham finds something and looks pleased with himself
Graham - I knew we'd find something, look at this
He dangles a package of white powder in front of Meg
Spike is in the office as there is a knock at the front door, she answers to find Vicki standing there
Jenny is in her house as there is a knock at the door, she answers to find Joan stood there
Joan - Afternoon Hartley...
Jenny - How did you find out this address?
Joan - I have my way the same as you have yours.... so going to invite me in then or what?
Chrissie tries to get past Gina and Ronnie but they block her way
Ronnie - Give it up Latham
Tracy raises the knife above her head
Tracy - Sweet dreams Smith!
Tracy begins to bring the knife down as Chrissie rushes forwards and wrestles her for it
Tracy - Let go of the knife Latham!
Chrissie - Like hell I will, I ain't gonna let ya kill Bea!
Chrissie throws Tracy across the room and runs over to Bea and violently shakes her
Chrissie - WAKE UP BEA!
Tracy runs up and pulls Chrissie away from Bea by her hair, they fight and Gina and Ronnie rush in to help Tracy restrain Chrissie
Gina and Ronnie keep a hold on Chrissie as Tracy punches her in the stomach
Tracy(angry) -STUPID BITCH! MAKING ME DO THIS THE HARD WAY!
Tracy walks back towards Bea and leans over and shakes her, Bea lays unresponsive
Tracy - If its any consolation it's nothing personal Smith I promise you, it's purely business
Tracy takes the knife out of pocket just as Bea suddenly leaps up and tackles her for the knife
Bea - This is nothing personal either I promise you, it's pure survival
Bea overpowers Tracy and gives her a brutal kicking, she screams in pain
Tracy - HELP ME, GIRLS!
Bea looks at Gina and Ronnie, who still have a hold on Chrissie, and shows them her knife
Bea - You heard her girls? She wants your help?
Gina and Ronnie let Chrissie go and run out of the room,
Bea sniggers and pulls Tracy up off the floor
Bea - Who sent you to kill me?
Tracy refuses to answer
Bea - WHO SENT YOU? TELL ME NOW! WAS IT FERGUSON?
Tracy nods her head in a half-hearted way
Bea punches Tracy in the stomach
Bea - I DIDN'T CATCH THAT!
Tracy - YES!..... YES, IT WAS FERGUSON! SHE HATES YOU
Bea pins Tracy to the wall and gets in her face
Bea - You just tell Ferguson that it will take more than a silly little girl like you and a few heavies to finish me off
Tracy - She'll get you eventually Smith, she's determined
Bea - Tell her I'll be waiting, every time she tries I'll be prepared and waiting. She wants a fight she can have one
Tracy - Tell her yourself
Bea pulls Tracy's hair
Tracy - OW! You're hurting me
Bea - You tell her...YOU'RE HER LACKEY
Tracy aggressively yanks herself free
Tracy - I ain't no one's lackey lady, i was only doing it for the money
Bea - Get out of here!
Tracy leaves
Chrissie is still there, Bea glares at her
Spike is in the lounge with Vicki
Vicki - I hope I'm not bothering you
Spike - No Vicki of course not, I'm glad to see you. Everyone is welcome here
Vicki is tearful
Vicki - I have a problem and I need to talk to someone
Spike - If it's drugs then you've come to the right place
Vicki shakes her head
Vicki - It's not drugs....not yet anyway. It's my parents, they are making me do something I don't want to do and I don't know what to do, I feel trapped, suffocated

A Mildly Odd Reality Breaker
Omar receives an unexpected visitor who comes baring a gift—a "registration ticket"—in the form of a small metal card. The ticket is itself an offer to participate in the game, "Reality Break." Accepting this offer means that Omar will be able to perceive the true nature of reality where there is not one, but two dimensions of time, and in this second dimension history changes (and somewhat "frequently"). Along with this, he will also gain access to the "chronopause"; another reality that is not so much parallel to our own as it is perpendicular, which acts as both a place and the natural boundary between non-sequential points on the timeline. Using the chronopause, Omar will become a chrononaut with the ability to travel through time, and as a player, he will be given a cybernetic interface and his own portable extradimensional storage space. It's a strange conversation, but due to Omar's dismally short attention span, he only consciously hears that last bit about the portable pocket space, and that's only after the physics-defying void is opened in his living room and literally waved in front of his face. Reality is certainly stranger than most people realize, but then again, so is Omar. Thankfully, he responds well to shiny things, and for better or for worse, his chronic inattentiveness is the least of his psychological issues. Omar also has a mild form of "Oppositional Defiant Disorder" which presents itself as an occasional, arbitrary need to disobey others (especially authority figures). However, his oddest psychological issue by far is his "abnormally hyperactive" subconscious mind. Outwardly and consciously, Omar is a lazy, apathetic man-child prone to mildly asinine behavior. Subconsciously, he's some sort of genius capable of extraordinary feats of cognition. Most of the time, Omar is a (technically) functioning adult, but in order to live as such, he must rely entirely upon unusual abilities he's completely unaware of, despite the fact that he uses them regularly. Up until now, his life had merely been ridiculous, but now it was also a game. Note: The narrative style is that of a reliable narrator with a "3rd-person sarcastic" POV. This story takes place in the Reality Breakers/Chronopause universe.

Every Hateful Instrument
Hail-and-Farewell Vinright is a pirate, ferrying drugs and weapons across the galaxy. When he discovers that the headaches he's been plagued with are not a sign that he has a brain tumor, and are instead the rare God-given gift of the power, one in a million psychic abilities, Hail sees the opportunity to help his family profit. Only people with the power can build the stardrives at the core of every ship, and the market for them is controlled by the Imperial government. Pirates would pay huge sums for one, so Hail's family enters the market. Aymon Sandreas is the least likely candidate to take the Imperial throne upon the retirement of his master, First Herrault. When Aymon steps too far out of line, his master sends him away to find the pirates who are flooding the galaxy with stardrives, destabilizing the Imperial government and the spacefaring Guild. When Hail and Aymon finally come face to face, Aymon offers Hail an opportunity: work for me, in exchange for your life.
