As the car containing Donald, Chloe, and Thelma drives away from Wentworth another can containing Roo's uncle Les and Sister Sandy pulls in and they get out. Sandy is wearing a neck brace
Sandy - I don't know if I can face her Uncle Les
Les - Come on we have to. I know you're nervous of her after what she tried to do to you and that is understandable but I am with you, she won't hurt you again with me around I promise you.
They move off inside
Ruth is in the toilet block, on her hands and knees, scrubbing away at some scum as a tearful Bea comes in
Ruth - What's the matter with you Smith?
Bea - That needn't concern you....can't you get lost for a bit I want some time alone
Ruth - I'd love to believe me and if anyone should be crying it should be me, I should not be having to do this job. But I have to, Fletcher and Raymond are just waiting for a chance to get at me, they are making my life hell, so are the women, especially Gibson
Bea (sarcastic) - Oh what a pity
Ruth - You could help me, Bea
Bea - Yeah? How?
Ruth - Help me get back on top, or at least help keep the women off my back
Bea - And why would I want to do that?
Ruth - You owe me, I did you a huge favour remember
Bea - You did that for your own benefit we both know that
Ruth - It still did you a good turn though didn't it, you might never have known about Chloe if it hadn't been for me, and you have not once thanked me or shown me an ounce of gratitude
Bea- So you reckon I owe you do you?
Ruth - Yes you're damn right I do...
Bea smirks
Bea - Yes perhaps you're right, I do owe you. I'll give you what I owe you, Ruth...
Ruth - Good I'm glad you see sense finally
Bea - Oh I see sense alright Ballinger...
Bea takes Ruth by surprise by pulling her to her feet and dragging her across the room to the toilet, where she forces her to her knees and shoves her head down the pan
Bea(aggressive) - This is what I owe you, Ballinger!
Ruth - Let me go, you'll pay for this Smith!
Bea - This one is for Myra
Bea pulls the chain. Ruth thrashes around and coughs and chokes
Bea lets go and stands up. Ruth stands up, her face and hair soaking wet
Ruth is seething with rage
Ruth - You'll regret doing that Smith!
Bea - The only thing I regret is not doing it sooner
Cheryl is coming into the room
Cheryl - G'day, what's going on here then?
Ruth - You can keep out of it Gibson!
Ruth storms out
Cheryl - Did you just do what I think you did?
Bea - Yes, been wanting to do it since she first came in here
Cheryl bursts out laughing and slaps Bea on the back
Cheryl - WOO-HOO! Good on ya sister!
Bea looks downbeat
Cheryl -What's the matter? Would expect you to be on top of the world now you stuck one up that bitch
Bea - Got a few personal problems that's all
Bea walks away
The visitor's room
Sandy and Les are waiting as Roo is shown in
Roo - You two have a nerve coming here after what you've done to me
Sandy looks angry
Advertisement
Sandy - After what we've done to you? What about what you've done to us?
Sandy points angrily at her neck brace
Sandy - You nearly strangled me to death
Roo - Yeah well I wish I had
Les - You don't mean that...
Roo - I bloody well do! I wish I'd killed you too. Out of everyone I never thought you would betray me!
Les - I had to can't you see? I had to do what I thought was right for little Danny
Roo - How can keeping him from his own mother be what's right for him?
Sandy - Come on Roo, you know damn well why in this case. What sort of life would he have had?
Roo - A good one! I know what I am, I don't kid myself on that, but when it comes to my son I do love him, I would never harm him
Les - We know you love him, but it's no good can't you see? Being on the run, it's not the life for a little boy
Sandy - Yes and as much as you may not mean to harm him you know as well as we do that you probably would, albeit unintentionally but you'd still do it all the same. You'd do something silly and he'd get hurt or even killed. Everyone who crosses your path gets hurt or killed in one way or another Roo, you know that
Les - You're too irresponsible, too selfish, and too violent to be a fit mother
Roo - That's right, bad bad Roo. Well you've said your piece haven't you and I'm sure you both feel a whole lot better now you've told me what you think of me
Sandy - We didn't come to have a go at you, we came to try and make peace, we wanted to try and make you understand.....and despite everything you've done, trying to kill me and all, i don't hate you
Roo stands up
Roo - Well guess what, I do hate you, both of you and I don't ever want to see either of you again
Roo turns and leaves the room
Ruth bumps into Ian in the corridor, now she has dried off and changed clothes
Ian - Aren't you supposed to be scrubbing the shower block?
Ruth - Yes but I need to make a phonecall
Ian - You aren't allowed privileges right now and you know it, governors orders
Ruth - I need to phone my solicitor, I think you'll find that is a right, not a privilege
Ian - Fair enough I'll take you now
The women are outside in exercise period
Bea is with Pauline
Pauline - Surely he can't stop the visits if it's what Chloe wants?
Bea - He seems to think he can but I'm not going to take this lying down
Pauline - What can you do from here?
Bea - I don't know yet but I have to do something, I can't just accept this...
.....Joan's associate is in the field behind the inner fence with a rifle, which he is pointing at Bea
Sandy and Les are back in the car, parked up outside
Sandy - I knew we shouldn't have come
Les - At least we tried
Sandy - She really can't see that we had Danny's best interests at heart can she? I loved that boy and giving him up was the hardest thing I ever had to do but I did it to stop her from getting him again... I never imagined she'd trace him to the adoptive family though
Advertisement
Les - She can be pretty determined when she wants to be
Sandy - Why did you help her Uncle Les?
Les shrugs
Les - I don't know, I'm just a silly old git, aren't i. I'm only glad I saw sense in the end and stopped her from taking him abroad
Sandy - What exactly made you change your mind? You never told me
Les - It was when she took him from the adoptive mother, I was there too, I have never seen anything like it, the violence, and I knew when I saw that, that I had to stop her taking him abroad
Sandy - Can you tell me? I'd like to know
Les sits and stares out of the window
FLASHBACK
Roo and Les knock at the door of a house and after a while, a posh well-dressed lady answers
Roo - You have an adopted son called Danny?
The lady - Well I don't know who you are or what business it is of yours but yes, why?
Roo gets a gun from her handbag, the lady looks terrified
Roo - Take me to him now
The lady - Why? What are you going to do?
Roo - We've come to take him away, what do you think
The lady - Are you going to hurt him?
Roo - No but I'll hurt you in a minute if you keep on annoying me!
Roo forces her way in, followed by an uneasy looking Les
The lady - Look who are you?....
Roo - I ask the questions lady, now where is he?
The woman is reluctant to answer
Roo hits her in the face
Roo - I SAID WHERE IS HE BITCH! ANSWER ME!
The woman -he is upstairs in his bedroom playing with his action man toys
Roo - Take us to him quickly
Roo marches the woman up the stairs followed by Les
The woman - Is it money you want? I can get you some!
Roo - No I don't want any money, I want the boy
The woman - This is very serious, think what you are doing for god's sake, kidnapping a child is...
Roo - He's my son isn't he! I want him back!
The woman is shocked
The woman - You're the mother?
Roo - Yes that's right.. so you see I am not kidnapping him, I am taking him back after he was stolen from me
They arrive at Danny's room. Danny is sitting cross-legged on the floor playing with his toys
Danny sees his mother and rushes overexcited
Danny - Mummy!
Roo - Yes tiger it's me...
Roo hugs her son
Roo -I've missed you so much, baby boy
Danny - I've missed you too...this is my mummy Angela
Roo looks at Angela with contempt
Roo - You only have one mummy darling and that's me....come on it's time to go
Angela - Look you can't do this! You can't just take him like this
Roo - I can and I am..now the question is what am I going to do with you? As soon as I'm out the door you're going to call the pigs ain't ya
Roo points the gun at Angela
Les looks worried and Danny confused
Roo - Perhaps I should shoot you right now
Angela is shaking with fear
Angela - Please.....
Les (agitated) - Look Roo, we don't need to do anything drastic! Let's just get out of here
Roo ignores him and stares at Angela
Roo - Such a stuck-up bitch huh! You look down your nose at types like me, don't you...oh I know your type, I've dealt with them plenty of times...you think I'm a bad mother, huh, you think you are so much better than me huh....you think you are a saint who gave my son a good home away from his terrible mother...IS THAT RIGHT HUH?
Angela shakes her head
Angela - No I didn't judge you I swear to it....all I did was provide a home for your son. it wasn't me who made the decisions, the courts did
les - Yes she's right Roo
Roo looks bitter
Roo - The courts and Sandy made the decisions...you're just like Sandy, think you're fit to judge me
Angela shakes her head
Angela - I don't judge you I swear
Roo - Oh well in that case...
Roo moves the gun away and Angela and Les both look relieved
Roo - In that case, here's what I'll do...
Roo swings the gun around smashing it into Angela's skull several times, spraying blood everywhere
Les - NO ROO!
Danny screams and cries. Angela falls to the floor, blood pouring from her head
Les - OH CHRIST!
He kneels beside Angela to examine her
Danny is sitting in a corner crying and looking terrified as Roo goes over to him
Danny - Please don't hurt me mummy
Roo sits beside him to hug him but he pulls away
Roo - I'd never hurt you, sweetheart, you know that
Danny - But you hurt my mummy Angela?
Roo - I'm you're mummy not er!
Roo stands up
Roo - It's time to go
Danny - No I don't want to go, I want to stay here with mummy Angela
Roo loses it and drags Danny up off the floor and shakes him
Roo - DO AS YOU'RE TOLD AND STOP CALLING HER MUMMY ANGELA!
Danny cries
Danny -Stop it, mummy, you're hurting me
Les pulls Danny away and comforts him as he cries
Les - You're scaring the poor kid can't you see that?
Roo - Let's just bloody well get out of here
Les - I think we should call an ambulance for her
Roo - just forget about her
Roo takes Danny by the hand and drags him out.....
Les and Sandy sit in silence for a moment
Les - After I witnessed that I knew I couldn't let her keep him...the thing is I know there is some good inside her somewhere, she keeps it bloody well hidden though.
Sandy smiles sadly
Sandy - I think that too..when we were kids she was so kind and gentle but then she grew up and life treated her badly and she grew to be bitter and mean. I miss her though, the old Roo. I wish something would happen to bring her back to us
The women are still on outside rec as Joan's associate points his rifle through the fence and aims it on Bea
Bea - The thing is I am sure Thelma wouldn't have agreed to this, it must just be Donald. I need to try and get Thelma to come and see me so I can talk to her about it
Pauline - She may not agree with it but she may just take her husband's side anyway, there are lots of women like that sadly...
Pauline bows her head and looks ashamed
Pauline - I was like that
Bea smiles bitterly
Bea - So was I once believe it or not, I am sure if dear old Harry was here now he'd confirm it
Suddenly gunshots begin to ring out, everyone runs for cover in a panic. Joan's associate hits Pauline but misses Bea
Bea - PAULINE!
Brumby is in her cell when Roo comes in
Roo - Do you want to go outside Tucker?
Brumby - Nah i',m alright where I am
Roo - You spend a lot of time inside, can't be doing you much good
Brumby - What do you care anyway?
Roo shrugs
Roo - I'm your carer ain't I, thought you might appreciate some fresh air that's all
Brumby - Bull! I bet you wanted to get me out there so you could do something rotten
Roo - Like what?
Brumby - I don't know, but something!
Roo lights a fag
Roo - You have an overactive imagination Tucker
Brumby - Yeah well anyway did you hear anything just now?
Roo - Like what?
Brumby - Loud bangs, sounded a bit like gunshots
Roo - Nah didn't hear a thing, I was in the shower block though, can't hear sod all from there
Brumby - So who was your visitor today?
Roo (hostile) - That's none of your business Tucker so keep out of it!
Brumby smirks
Brumby - Gee I'm sorry Roo, I thought you were in a friendly mood today that's all..offering to take me outside and all
Roo - Yeah well you thought wrong didn't ya!
The women are in the rec room as Janice arrives
Bea - How is Pauline Miss Raymond?
Janice - Pauline will be fine, she was hit in the arm that's all
Bea - Those shots were meant for me
Janice - I don't see how you can know that for sure Smith?
Bea - Oh I know it, there is no doubt in my mind. I bet I can guess who was behind it too
Cheryl - Did you catch the shooter Miss?
Janice - Unfortunately not, whoever they were they got away before we had a chance
Joan's associate is in her house with her
Joan - What do you mean you missed?
Joan's associate - I mean I missed Ferguson, it's as simple as that
Joan - You stupid damn fool!
Joan's associate - Just watch who you call a fool!
Joan - You'll have to try again
Joan's associate - I don't know if I can do that Joan, it was risky enough once and it didn't work!
Joan - Then you'll have to go inside the prison woncha, actually visit Smith in her cell
Joan's associate - Are you kidding? How would I get away with that?
Joan - You could go in at nighttime, it happened there once before, someone wanted a prisoner called Lisa Mullins dead and sent a hitwoman in at nighttime to do it
Joan's associate - You would have to pay me a lot of money to take a risk like that
Joan - I already paid you to kill her and you failed?
Joan's associate - I don't care, I took a big risk for you, not to mention all the other risks I've taken. I want some more money right now or you can forget it
Joan looks angry, she goes over to her chest of drawers and opens it
Joan -You can have your lousy money! Just fix smith for once and for all
Joan ferrets around in the drawer
Joan -I don't understand this...I still had a few hundred in here, now it's gone
The man stands up
The man - Call me when you have the money and we'll take it from there
Joan - No wait I know it's here...
Joan ferrets around some more
The man - Call me...
He leaves, Joan looks perplexed
GATESLAM

Sally - Afternoon Joan
Joan - Afternoon....how did the flat hunting go?
Sally shakes her head in dismay
Sally - Terrible Joan, there is nothing about that I can afford at all
Joan -I see...
Sally shows Joan some packets of coke
Sally - But all is not lost, I managed to get us both a fix
Joan - Yes I've been wondering about that...where do you get the money from for it?
Sally - You know...
Joan - I don't know, why don't you tell me, shed some light on it
Sally shrugs
Sally - Here and there ya know
Joan stands up and wonders over to her chest of drawers and points to them
Joan - HERE and there you say?
Sally - Look Joan I was going to pay you back I swear it!
Joan - Get out!
Sally - Please Joan...

Joan flings Sally out onto the street
Sally - YOU ROTTEN BITCH!
Joan slams the door in her face
The rec room
Roo wheels Brumby in
Cheryl - Hey Brumby, it's good to see you, don't see much of you these days
Brumby shrugs
Brumby - Hey what was that noise earlier? I thought it sounded like gunshots
Bea - Yes love it was...and your mother got hit by a bullet I'm afraid
Brumby looks concerned
Brumby - My mother? Is she alright?
Bea - Yeah they say she will be fine, just got hit in the arm that's all. Why don't you ask the screws if you can see her I'm sure they will agree
brumby - Nah it's ok I don't want to see her do i......

Upon entering the game, he discovers that there are many things that set it apart from the VRMMOs he's played. Dispatches from the Inter-galactic
Dispatches From The Inter-Galactic is a series of loosely related satirical stories which take place in a galaxy full of various interstellar civilizations and numerous space faring species generally described as consentients. This series is set in a galaxy which take place in a similar but not entirely unlike the galaxy in which my series Up in Space takes place While there are numerous themes related to interstellar life, several of the stories directly relate to specific themes such as; The pan-galactic ramifications to the use of supersymetrical energy sources (often drained from intera-located alternate and pocket realities.) the use of which by most interstellar civilizations is steadily increasing the overall amount of Dark Matter. This is increasing the mass of the galaxy and results in the occasional rips in inter-dimensional space as well as an overall increase in supernova activity. It is also speeding up the approach of the galaxy in Andromeda, which is of concern to several long lived civilizations; The Morphoids, a race of shape-changing consentients who are capable of using the space lanes created by the use of supersymetrical sourced energy to spread throughout the galaxy. They are currently viewed as threat number one by many space-faring species; and Xeno and exo-sexuality, as many species try to figure out what sort of enjoyment they can have with many of the species they encounter in space (only some of which are carbon-based, or more rarely, humanoid in appearance). This also relates to the altering of species to make reproduction somewhat easier for those with rather complicated lifestyles. A major force in this area of pursuit is the galactic visiteering industry, which promotes the ‘uplifting’ of more primitive planet-bound near-consentients.

The Eternal Vigil
The year is 2220, a time when governments and nation-states are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Instead, all prominent parts of human society are now organizing around the commands of three great Artificial Intelligences, owned and operated by the world's largest corporation. World peace has been achieved, and the very word 'politics' has disappeared from people's lips. Religion has largely disappeared, replaced in some parts by worshipping of the great AIs, but mostly substituted by a devotion to material goods and faith in the market. There is now a general consensus that the best form of government has been found. No, it is not democracy, nor is it autocracy or oligarchy. Instead, it is technocracy - rule by the learned, the intelligent, and the skilled. And who are more learned, intelligent, and skilled than the great AIs? Exactly, no one. The AIs will correct some market failures once in a while, but shall otherwise let the market be free. After all, the freer the market, the freer the people. Some may question how society advanced to this stage, but that is all they will do - question. Because they will not find answers, for history is no longer taught anywhere. After all, it is not a practical subject. One cannot get a decently paying job with a history degree. Society doesn't have any time for people to idly ponder about the past. No, this is a practical society of practical people: engineers, doctors, lawyers, developers, managers, bankers, soldiers, and the such. My name is Aiden Scivit and I used to be one such practical man: minding my own business, doing my job, with the faith that hard work will always be rewarded by the market...and that politics and philosophy were things thought of by idly people who leech off society. But this all changed, and here is my story, my history. Just because the stories of ages long past have been erased, does not mean that a brand new beginning cannot be created. The story is already finished but I still need to do some editing so a chapter should be released each day for a month. It is a bit political, as you can probably tell by the introduction, so there is that (it will low-key read like a philosophy dump 10% of the time, so really it's like Atlas Shrugged but liberal and worse lol). Also, I actually wrote this in grade 10 as part of my MYP Personal Project, and recently touched up on it for online publication. Finally, if you find the writing style passable and are interested in my other works, check out the one in the link below. It is a fantasy set in the Ancient Greek world, and is completed and uploaded in full: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/35099/the-oresteia-modernized
