Cindy is standing on the white line sobbing. Matt has the charge sheet
Matt- Your name is Cindy Louise Matthews, is that correct?
Cindy (crying) - Yes
Matt - And you are on remand on a charge of Arson and murder?
Cindy - Yes but I didn't do it, neither did my fiance, neither of us would ever do that! We were set up!
Matt(sarcastic tone ) - Oh yes I'm sure you were, everybody in here was set up, everyone's innocent
Cindy - Well it's true this time!
Matt- Yes well you'll get a chance to defend yourself in court
Cindy - I have no idea how we can, neither of us has much money
Matt- Well there's always legal aid if you're stuck Matthews....right over to the counter
They go over to the counter
Matt - Empty your handbag
Cindy empties her bag to reveal lots of makeup
Matt - It's best if you don't keep all that, we can keep it in storage until your release
Cindy looks horrified
Cindy - But I love my makeup! I love to look my best
Matt - You don't need to look your best in here Matthews, this is a prison, not a red-light district..... I'll have the earrings too
Matt points to Cindy's large hoop earrings
Cindy - Oh no please...can't I keep them?
Matt - No I'm sorry, the other inmates could steal them off you or even use them to injure you
Cindy - Injure me how?
Matt - They could rip those out of your ears, bit hoops like those. Do you want your ear lobes torn open? They are far too dangerous for you to keep so take them out
Cindy does as she's told while quietly sobbing
Matt - And another thing....try and act a bit tough if you can, as this lot will eat you for breakfast
Cindy - I have never been in a place like this before, I'm scared
Matt - I know, it shows
Ian is waiting outside the gates of Wentworth as Sally approaches
Sally - Mr Henderson?
Ian - Yes and who are you?
Sally - Joan sent me on her behalf, she has other things to do today.....she wanted me to tell you to forget the plan with Maxwell, she knows you messed the job up and that's fine, she doesn't want you to try again
Ian - Just as well because I wasn't going to try again anyway, the whole thing made me sick
Sally - yes I'm sure...you still had a go at it for the money though?
Ian - Yes and I want my second half that Ferguson owes me
Sally - Nice try spunky but Joan said to tell you you can whistle for it, the rest was on the condition you did the job, you failed so no payment
Ian - That bitch!
Sally - She did say she'll let you keep the first half though as a thank you for the effort you made
Ian - Oh really? That's nice of her...like I would ever hand that back anyway!
Sally - She would have found a way to get it back if she really wanted to, as it is she feels generous
Ian - Generous? I took a lot of bloody risks to fix Maxwell for her...now she tells me I wasted my time apparently? Otherwise, she'd want me to try again wouldn't she
Sally - Yes well I passed the message on, so I'll be off now
Ian - Wait before you go....you best warn Ferguson that the inmates know what she did, they know she paid me to make Maxwell miscarry. I don't know what they might do about it

Sally - I'll tell her Henderson
Exterior shot of Woodridge prison
Inside Ann is sitting in a room as Paul is brought in
Ann jumps up and hugs him
Ann - Oh darling...
Officer - No physical contact, please
They sit down
Paul (tearful) - I didn't do it, mum...someone has set me up
Ann - I know sweetheart. Meg and I think we know who it was, we're going to go to the police about it
Paul - They arrested Cindy too
Ann - I know...
Paul -Get her out mum please, she won't be able to handle it in there, she's not very tough
Ann - Neither are you
Paul - I can handle it, I want Cindy out, please talk to Ben, see if he can get her bail... of course I can't pay him much
Ann - I'm sure Ben won't even think about payment darling, you're family after all
Paul - So you'll talk to him?
Ann - Of course, i will...I'm going to get you out of here too I promise you
Paul nods his head
Paul - Thanks, mum....I don't care about me just as long as Cindy gets out
The laundry
Cheryl is on the press as Vicki comes in
Cheryl - How's Kath?
Vicki - She's pretty cut up about it, just laying on her bed crying
Cheryl - Poor bitch
Bea is listening
Bea - What's the matter with her?
Cheryl - The man she loves is dead if you must know
Bea - Really? Who was he
Vicki - Marty Jack...
Cheryl elbows her
Cheryl - Shut up Vic! Kath wouldn't want it spread around
Bea - She was having it off with Jackson? My my, the cheeky cow!
Cheryl - Yes but it's not common knowledge, she only told Vic and me, keep it to yourself Bea
Bea - Oh, of course, mums the word
Ann is with Ben at the motel
Ann - You look terrible
Ben - My wife has just been murdered, what do you expect?
Ann - Where are you going to stay?
Ben - Here for the time being, what about you?
Ann - Meg has said I can stay with her
Ben - Good...Meg's a good friend to you
Ann - I went to see Paul, he wants you to help Cindy. I told him you'd help them both, I know you won't care about payment when it comes to family
Ben looks angry
Ben - You want me to help that pair of murderers? You can forget that. I hope they both rot in hell
Ann - But they didn't do it, Ben, surely you can see that
Ben - Really? Well that's not what the evidence says
Ann - They were set up Ben
Ben - And who by?
Ann - Well I have no proof but I think it was Joan Ferguson, you see Meg...
Ben - Get real Ann, I understand he's your son and you don't want to believe he murdered his own sister, your daughter, but we were both there last night, you saw the way Pippa upset them both just like I did
Ann - So they would hardly kill her over such a stupid petty row as that
Ben - Obviously they went back after we had both left and it must have turned even nastier, got out of hand. In my career as a lawyer, I have seen similar cases many times
Ann - No, no I don't believe they did it ....and if you'd just visit Paul like I did you'd know he couldn't have done it, he's totally devastated about it

Ben - Obviously a good actor then
Ann loses it and slaps Ben across the face
Ann - How dare you!
Ben rubs his cheek and gives Ann a dirty look
Ben - I'm going to see to it that your precious son and his barbie doll fiance pay for killing my wife.....you can believe what you like, you can believe in your head fanciful tales about Joan Ferguson setting them up if you like but I like to deal in the cold hard facts, the evidence
Ann - I thought you of all people would have enough sense to realize that sometimes people do get framed for things they didn't do, things are not always as clear-cut as they may seem. And having known Paul as long as you have I can't believe you'd think he was responsible for this, he's such a gentle boy
Ben - Yes I'll admit it's come as a shock, but then we don't know Cindy that well do we. perhaps she corrupted him, egged him on... yes, I can see it now, she was angry that Pippa insulted her in front of us all, humiliated her the way she did, threw wine in her face. I know if someone did that to me I'd be pretty mad
Ann - It doesn't mean you'd then go and kill them though does it
Ben - No maybe not to you and I but to someone who is messed up in the head who knows?
Ann looks like a seed of doubt has been planted in her head
Sally meets with Joan, she is high
Joan - Did you pass the message on to Henderson?
Sally - Yes Joan I did.....he had plenty to say for himself
Joan -really? like what?
sally - Oh rambling on you know....he did give me a message for you I think but I can't remember what the hell it was now
Joan - Can't have been very important then
Sally - Nah, can't have been....fancy a line?
Joan - Yes I do....god look at me I swore I'd never touch drugs again after I went through rehab
Sally - Relax Joan, it makes you feel good and you know it, makes you forget your troubles for a while
Joan - I used to think I was stronger than this, I was wrong it seems
Sally - You're lonely Joan, just like I am. Life chewed us up and spat us out...but Charlie is our friend, he never abandons us, Joan
Sally has laid out 2 neat lines of coke
Mandy is in the governor's office with her arm in plaster. Officer Hagen is also present
Mandy - Why did they send me back so soon? My arm kills
Jim - They need the bed for more urgent cases Slater, you're arm has been fixed and put in plaster so you don't need to remain in hospital
Mandy - You could at least let me take it easy in the infirmary for a while
Jim - Take it easy in solitary would be more likely
Mandy(angry) - What the hell for! I'm the victim here! Maxwell attacked me!
Jim - That's not what Maxwell says
Mandy - Well she's a bloody liar ain't she!
Jim - Is Mr Henderson a liar too? He backs Maxwell up, says you attacked him in solitary so you could steal his keys and go after her
Mandy - That's a total lie! He asked...
Mandy pauses
Jim - He asked what?
Mandy - Nothing, it doesn't matter
Jim looks at her in suspicion
Jim turns to officer Hagen
Jim - Take Slater to H Block, she can have light duties while her arm is in plaster
Hagen nods
Hagen - Come on Slater
Ann is with Meg
Meg - I'm surprised Ben believes they did it
Ann - Ben is just angry that's all, he's not thinking straight right now
Ann is tearful again
Ann - I just can't believe this has happened....anyway here I am going on about myself, how are you coping Meg?
Meg - I'm still in shock I think, it hasn't really sunk in yet
Ann - Yes I think I am too....do you really think it was Ferguson?
Meg - It has to be...who else would it be?
Ann - I don't know....that bitch! She won't get away with it Meg, she can't
meg - I've already spoken to Inspector Grace, he's coming over later to see us
Ann - Good...we have to nail her for this Meg
Meg - We will, I'll make damn sure of it...Marty was all I had left after Bill died
Meg starts crying too, they comfort each other
Mandy is sulking in her cell as Ian walks past the cell, she runs out to confront him
Mandy - I've got a bone to pick with you Henderson!
Ian - In that case, I suppose I had better listen then
Mandy - Why did you tell the governor that it was me who knocked you out and attacked Maxwell?
Ian - Well it was wasn't it
Mandy - Only because you made a deal with me and you know that
Ian smirks
Ian - I could hardly tell them that could I, I'm sorry
Mandy - You could have told them it was Maxwell who attacked us
Ian - I could have but I decided I'd rather tell them it was you
Mandy - Well if you still want to get her you can count me out in the future!
Ian - I don't still want to get her, its over, finished
Mandy - Not quite, I still want my escape you promised me, mine and grans
Ian - Oh but you didn't do the job Slater, why should I help you escape?
Mandy - Because I will tell the governor and the police what you did if you don't
Ian - And they will believe you will they? I doubt it
Mandy - Want to take that risk?
Ian - Yes go ahead if you like, there is no proof, just my word against yours, who do you think they are going to believe?
Mandy spits in his face. Ian wipes the spit off his face and grins
Ian - And if you're hoping to provoke me into attacking you don't bother, I won't fool for that one
Ian calmly strolls off
Cindy is led into the visiting room where Ben is waiting
Cindy - Oh Ben thank god you're here! Have you been to see Paul yet? Is he ok? Oh I can't stand this place, it is a dreadful place, please get me out of here
Ben - And Paul too?
Cindy - Oh yes, if you can
Ben - Why the hell do you think I'd want to help either of you after you killed my wife?
Cindy - But we didn't, I swear it
Ben - That's not what the evidence says
Cindy - We must have been framed for it
Ben - Yes that's what Ann says too, I don't believe it
Cindy - Oh come on...
Ben - Let's not pretend you're a saint darling, you did try it on with me a few weeks ago remember...and then begged me not to tell Paul when I knocked you back
Cindy - So Pippa was right I'm a bit of a slut, but I'm not a murderer
Ben - Yes that's what you say, forgive me if I don't believe it
Cindy - Why are you here then? I thought, well I hoped, you may have come to help me
Ben - I came to tell you you should do the decent thing and own up, admit that you both did it
Cindy is crying
Cindy - We didn't do it....well I didn't do it I know that much
Ben - But Paul might have?
Cindy - I didn't say that... it's just...
Cindy pauses
Ben - Just what?
Cindy - Well I was in the bath for over an hour after we got home, I wanted a long soak to relax after what happened at dinner, wash the wine out of my hair. I don't know what Paul was doing while I was in the bath
Ben - are you saying he could have had time to go back out again, get to my house, and then back to your flat while you were in the bath?
Cindy - Yes, but I'm sure he didn't. Not my Paul
Ben grabs her and shakes her in rage
Ben - YOU NEED TO TELL THE POLICE THIS YOU LITTLE BITCH! HE KILLED MY WIFE AND IF YOU'RE INNOCENT LIKE YOU SAY YOU NEED TO TELL THEM!
Cindy - LET ME GO YOU'RE HURTING ME!
Matt rushes over
Matt - That's enough of that, calm down or I'll terminate the visit
Ben lets Cindy go
Ben - It's alright I'm going anyway
Ben turns back to Cindy and gets in her face in a threatening manner
Ben - You should tell the police what you just told me, you want to get out of here right? If you're innocent like you say you are you need to do all you can to clear yourself
Cindy - But Paul didn't do it, I know he didn't do it
Ben - If you don't tell them I will and I mean it
Ben gets up and leaves.
Matt - Are you ok Matthews?
Cindy nods her head and wipes the tears off her face
Cindy - I want to see Inspector Ross please, I have something to tell him
GATESLAM
PART 2
Connie, John, and Tess are sitting around
John - What would you like to do this afternoon Connie?
Connie - I don't mind
John - I took an afternoon off from work, especially so we could do something. I thought we might all go for a drive into town, do some shopping maybe? You could do with some new clothes
Connie - That would be great if I had the money!
John - I will buy you the clothes Connie, you don't have to worry about money
Tess looks furious and fed up
Connie - I don't think I can take your money John, you're already being kind putting me up
John - Just see it as a gift
Connie - Why are you being so generous to me? I don't deserve it
John - But you do Connie, you're a very special girl....isn't she Tess?
Tess glares angrily at John
John - Isn't she Tess!
Tess - Yes that's right, very special
John - See? Tess agrees too
Connie - But why?
John - You remind us of our own daughter...
Connie - You have a daughter?
John - We did yes...she was about your age when she.....
John pauses and looks upset
Connie - When she what?
Tess - She died Connie
Connie - Oh I'm sorry
John shakes his head in annoyance
John - Everyone's sorry! As soon as we tell them she died all they can say is sorry! Well sorry doesn't bring her back does it!
Connie bows her head and looks awkward
Connie - It's just what you say I guess, sorry if I upset you
John - No I'm the one who should be sorry, I didn't mean to get annoyed Connie
John turns to Tess
John - Go into the bedroom and get the photo albums will ya love, I want to show Connie what Linda looked like
Tess - I'm sure Connie really doesn't want to see them, John
John (annoyed) - Do it now, please
With a sigh, an irritated, Tess leaves the room
John smiles at Connie, who smiles back. Tess returns with the photo albums which John snatches from her and begins to hunt through
John - Ah! Here we are! This is a lovely picture of Linda
He shows Connie the picture
John - See how much you look like her? You have the same hair, the same eyes
Connie - Yeah I guess I do a bit
John - Oh more than a bit, you're very much like her
Connie - I suppose
John - Here's another good one! This was when we went to Luna Park, we had such a great day, have you ever been?
Connie - Yeah once a long time ago
John - We can take you again if you'd like?
Tess takes the photo albums away and snaps them shut
Tess - We should go out now John if we're going it's getting on for 2 pm, soon it will be too late to go shopping
John - But I still have more photos to show Connie
Tess - I'm sure the girl doesn't want to sit and look at our boring old photo albums all-day John
John - Boring! They aren't boring! Do you think they are boring Connie?
Connie - Oh no, I really enjoyed looking at them honest
John looks at Tess
John - See? She was enjoying seeing them!
Tess- But we should go out now all the same
John smiles
John - Yes perhaps you're right, time is pressing on
Meg's place
Grace is there
Grace - Nice to see you Mrs Reynolds, keeping well I hope? Wentworth hasn't been the same without you
Ann - Yes I'm fine inspector..or I should say I was until my daughter was murdered
Grace - Yes I heard about that... it's not my case though, my colleague Inspector Ross is on that one
Meg - Yes we know....you were dealing with Marty's murder though weren't you?
grace - yes, we've charged four prisoners at Woodridge for that one
Meg - I see...
Grace - So what can I do for you this afternoon ladies? Is it about Marty?
Meg - Well it's about Marty and Pippa inspector...Ann and I both think Joan Ferguson is behind both murders
Grace looks stunned
The interview room
Inspector Ross is sitting with a cigarette as Cindy is shown in
Ross - I was told you had some more information for me?
Cindy sits head bowed, reluctant
Ross (impatient) - Well girl? Let's hear it?
Back at Megs
Grace - Are you being serious?
Ann - Yes I'm afraid we are, that woman hates us both, I totally believe she would do something like this
