NEW MUGSHOTS - KATH/ROO/VICKI

Meg arrives home carrying shopping bags

Meg - Vera? Vera are you here?

Meg lays the shopping out on the kitchen worktop and spots a note. The note says

'Gone job hunting, back later. Vera'

Meg smiles to herself and begins unpacking the shopping. The phone rings, Meg answers

It's Paul Reynolds

Paul - Meg it's Paul, I have good news for you, mum's woken up. They think she's gonna make a complete recovery

Meg (happy) - Oh that is good news

Paul - I'm going up there to see her now if you'd like to come?

Meg - Yes I'd love to

Brumby is alone walking a corridor when she sees Janice coming up the corridor. She tries to act casual

Janice - Where are you off to Tucker?

Brumby - Just taking a walk miss

Janice - I'm glad I bumped into ya, I wanted a word

Brumby - Oh yeah?

Janice - Yeah

Janice checks the corridor is clear and then grabs Brumby around the throat

Janice - it's about the other day in solitary, I wouldn't want anyone else to know about it

Brumby - About how you tried to kill Simpson and left me to die you mean?

Janice - yeah that's right. You see if anyone were to find out about it you'll wish you had died in that cell, that would have been nothing compared to what I'd do to ya. Got it?

Brumby - Yeah sure, I won't say anything I swear

Janice lets go of her throat

Janice - Very wise Tucker...Now perhaps you can do me another favour

Brumby - Yeah like what?

Janice - Keep me posted on the women's antics

Brumby - You mean lag?

Janice - Yeah if you like

Brumby - No way you can stick it, I ain't lagging, they'd kill me

Janice - I don't think you understand Tucker, it wasn't a request it was an order. What do you think I'm gonna do to ya if ya don't?

Brumby looks terrified

Brumby - Yes Miss

Janice - Ok you can go. And remember to listen out for anything you think I should know about and report it back to me

Brumby nods her head and rushes off

The hospital

Ann is sitting up in bed. Meg and Paul are with her

Meg - I can't tell you how pleased I am to see you're ok Ann, you gave us one hell of a scare

Ann (jokey manner) - Takes more than a silly little car to finish me off, tough as old boots I am

Paul - I don't know what I would have done if I'd lost you, mum

Ann takes his hand

Ann - I know darling, well I'm not ready to leave you and Pip just yet

Paul (smiling) - I'll hold you to that

Ann (smiling back) - You better

Ann turns to Meg

Ann - How are things at Wentworth?

Meg examines the floor

Meg - Maybe now's not the time to talk about Wentworth, you still need time to recover before you start worrying about work

Ann senses something is wrong

Ann - What's happened, Meg?

Meg - Nothing, I just think you should concentrate on getting better

Paul - Meg's right mum

Ann (agitated) - If something's wrong I want to know, please Meg

Meg - There was a bomb blast. Roo Morgan was behind it, she used it to escape

Ann - Oh god, did anyone die?

Meg - Yes I'm afraid they did

Ann - Who?

Meg hesitates to answer

Ann - Who died Meg? I need to know

Meg - Andrea Radcliffe, officer Maguire, Helen Stephens, Tina Murray...I'm afraid Rita Connors died too. I'm sorry I know you had developed a good relationship with her

Ann looks distraught

Ann - Anyone else?

Meg - Well yes I'm afraid so...Joyce died too Ann

Ann - Oh no

Ann is tearful

Paul - Mum please you mustn't upset yourself

Inspector Grace arrives

Grace - Morning...I'm sorry to disturb you but I would like a few words with Mrs. Reynolds in private

Paul - What now? Can't it wait?

Grace - I'm afraid it can't sorry

Ann - It's ok you two go, I'll be fine

Meg - come on we'll go for a coffee

Meg and Paul leave

Outside in the corridor

Meg - I'm sorry Paul, I didn't want to tell her about the bomb so soon

Paul - It's ok, she can be pretty determined when she wants to know about something

Meg - There's something else I held off from telling her...she's not the governor anymore. Dwyer gave her job away

Paul looks furious

Paul - What? He can't do that can he?

meg - Come on let's go for a coffee

Back with Ann

Grace - How are you feeling Mrs. Reynolds?

Ann - I'm ok, at least I'm alive

Grace - Yes well I'm sorry to bother you like this but we need to talk to you. If we're to find who was responsible for this

Ann - I really have no idea who it was I'm afraid

Grace - None at all? Is there no one you can think of who had a grudge against you?

Ann - Inspector I'm the governor of a prison, plenty of people have a grudge

Grace - Yes but has there been anyone, in particular, you can think of in the last few weeks leading up to the hit and run?

Ann sits thinking

Ann - No not that I can think of

Grace (short-tempered) - Well try to think! it might be important!

Ann(defensive) - I'm trying inspector. I've only just woken up from a coma. I'm trying to come to terms with the fact it happened at all, let alone who might have done it

Grace - Yeah yeah I'm sorry. It's just that we think it was definitely done deliberately. Your neighbour confirmed that the car was parked and that the driver would have had a clear view of you and that they started the engine and drove right at you in a very deliberate way. We have to rule out any idea that it may have been merely an accident

Ann is upset

Ann - I honestly don't know who would hate me enough to do this to me, I've always been a fair governor, tried my best to keep on good terms with the women. Most of them appreciate it, I can't think who would hate me enough to do this to me

Grace - Well you give it some more thought ok Mrs. Reynolds.... I'll leave you in peace for now. Concentrate on getting better

Ann - Thank you, inspector

Grace nods and leaves

Meg and Paul are in the hospital canteen with a coffee and a slice of cake each

Paul - I can't believe Dwyer has done this to mum, it's outrageous

Meg - I know. I expressed my disapproval to him. The truth is he wanted an excuse like this to get rid of Ann. He never much approved of her reforms

Paul - He's a bastard

Meg has a cheeky grin

Meg - No argument from me there

Paul smirks back

Paul - He's not gonna get away with this Meg

Meg - What are you going to do?

Paul sits thinking

Paul - I don't know yet.....listen Meg can you go back and stay with mum for a bit? I have to shoot off for a bit

Meg - Yes ok....where shall I say you've gone?

Paul - Just out to take care of a bit of business that's all

Meg gives paul a suspicious look

Vicki is in the shower. She is being watched.....by Janice

Vicki finishes her shower and drapes a towel around herself. As she steps out she is alarmed to see Janice watching her

Vicki - Yeah what can I do for you then?

Janice - Just wondered why you're in here at this time of the day Mcpherson?

Vicki - Just fancied freshening up that's all. Nothing interesting was going on down the rec room

Janice - Well the women have been let outside now, you're missing out on some fresh air

Vicki shrugs

Vicki - Yeah well I'll just go back to the dorm and get dressed

Vicki tries to go but Janice blocks her way

Janice - Why the rush McPherson? I thought we could have a little chat

Vicki - Yeah? What about?

Janice - Well I guess you must be pretty lonely without your mate Simpson?

Vicki - Yeah I suppose

Janice touches Vicki up

Janice - You look nice Vicki, real nice. Just the sort of gal I go for

Vicki looks uncomfortable

Vicki - Look I think I should go now

Janice - Come on now Vicki..I'm offering for you to be my girl. That's a good offer, you'd be rather foolish to turn it down

Vicki - Look no offense but you don't really do it for me. I'm sorry

Janice turns nasty

Janice - Listen you slut, when I want something I have it. I'm not offering you a choice here

Vicki looks started

Janice - Don't fight me, Vicki, that would be a mistake. A very big mistake!

Kath is with Malcolm in the governor's office. Marty is also present

Malcolm - Merle Jones's funeral is scheduled for tomorrow morning and Mr. Jackson here has asked me for permission to allow you to attend which I have granted. Mr. Jackson will be escorting you

Kath - Thank you, Mr. Preston. Any word on Rita Connor's funeral?

Malcolm - yes that is also tomorrow morning at a different location. Permission has been granted for Gibson to attend and Brown will be escorted there from the hospital if she is up to it

Kath looks disappointed

Kath - I really would have liked to attend Rita's funeral as well

Malcolm - I realize you may feel like that. But even if Connors funeral didn't clash with Jones's we couldn't really allow you to attend both anyway. You have to understand that being allowed to attend any funeral is a privilege and not a right

Kath - Yes Mr. Preston I realize that. I appreciate it thanks

Malcolm nods

Malcolm - You can take Maxwell back now Mr. Jackson

Kath and Marty leave

Kath - thanks for getting him to agree to let me go

Marty - That's ok. I'm glad he agreed to let me take you, I wanted to say my goodbyes to Merle too

Kath - Have you thought any more about what I told you about Rodney?

Marty nods

Marty - Yes but there's not much we can do about it until we get back to Wentworth. We need evidence before we can nail him. If we go to the department with accusations like this and nothing to back it up they will just laugh in our faces

Kath - Yes I realize that. So you're up for helping me nail him?

Marty - Yes

In the yard, a crowd has gathered around Marie.

Margo marches accross and shoves infront

Marie - What can I do for you, Gaffney?

Margo - I want a fight, just you and me, one to one. The winner takes top dog.

Marie chuckles

Marie - Bugger off Gaffney, weren't the bruises I gave ya last night enough to teach ya a lesson?

Margo - Yeah well that wasn't a fair fight was it. I mean this time you and I alone

Margo glances at Veronica

Margo - This time without any help from one of ya goons

Veronica gives Margo a look

Margo - So what ya say? up for it?

Marie - Yer ok why not. I'll enjoy wiping the floor with ya Gaffney

Margo - When?

Marie - Tomorrow. out here

Margo nods and walks away

Margo joins Brumby

Brumby - What did she say?

Margo - She's up for it

Brumby - You sure ya wanna do it? What if she beats ya?

Margo - No chance, I'm gonna brain her!

Paul has arrived at Dwyer's office block and approaches a receptionist.

Paul - I'm here to see Mr. Dwyer

Receptionist - Take a seat and I will ring through and tell him. Who shall I say wants to see him?

Paul - Paul Reynolds, son of Ann Reynolds

Spike is high on heroin in her cell as Marty passes by and she rushes out and grabs him

Spike - Marty I never took it I swear, Stout set me up

Marty pushes her away

Marty - You expect me to believe that? You're high now, aren't you?

Spike - Yeah so I need some now don't i. Can you blame me? I'm stuck back in here and I was set up, of course, I've had some now

Marty - You're a disgrace, Margaret. I just want you to know that I really wanted things to work out between us and for us to have a future.

Spike - So did I and we still can! All you have to do is believe that I was set up and we can work through this Marty

Marty - I don't believe that you were set up I'm sorry

Spike - Fine! So you've made your choice then have you!

Marty - Yes and you've made yours. I hope you and the drugs will be very happy together

Marty walks away

Spike - STUFF YA THEN BASTARD!

Paul is with Dwyer in his office

Dwyer holds out a hand and they shake

Dwyer - Do please take a seat

Paul sits down

Dwyer - What can I do for you?

Paul - Mum has woken up this morning and is doing well

Dwyer flashes Paul with a smile

Dwyer - That is excellent news, I'm pleased to hear that. Give her my regards

Paul - Yes well of course I'm happy that my mum is awake but I am not so happy that I will now have to inform her that she is no longer the governor of Wentworth

Dwyer puts on a fake show of regret

Dwyer - Yes that is most regrettable. Of course, Mrs. Reynold's dismissal should not be seen as a reflection on her fine performance as governor...

Paul - Then why has she been dismissed? I hear that the replacement governor was hardly wonderful, a bomb went off while she was in charge!

Dwyer - Yes and she has now also been replaced!

Paul - I want you to reinstate mum as governor. You can't just dismiss her for no good reason, she has done nothing wrong

Dwyer - Mrs. Reynolds was dismissed as the department feels she would not fit in with its view of taking the prison system forwards..while we recognize that she is a competent governor we do feel she is perhaps a little too soft...

Paul - You mean because she treats prisoners like human beings and not animals?

Dwyer (dismissive tone) - Yes well I don't feel it serves a purpose to continue this conversation...i wish Mrs. Reynolds the very best for the future...

Paul - You will not get away with this! If you don't reinstate mum right now I'm going to the press, I'll go to every newspaper in the land to tell them how you fired my mum while she was laying in a coma. We'll sue your precious department!

Dwyer loses his temper

Dwyer - That would be very foolish boy! Just walk away now, I would highly recommend you not to go down this path

Paul - Is that a threat?

Dwyer - It's a warning....a friendly warning. The department will not respond to threats such as those you have just made

Paul jumps out of his seat

Paul - You have not heard the last of this

Paul storms out

Kath is with Cheryl in the dorm

Kath - I'm sorry I can't come to Rita's funeral but I have to go to Merle's. I really have to

Cheryl - It's ok I understand. You need to say your goodbyes to Merle. Rita told me how close you were to Merle. she would want you to attend Merle's funeral

Kath has tears in her eyes but wipes them away

Kath - I miss Merle a lot. Rita too

Cheryl is tearful too. They hug.

Margo and Brumby come in

Margo - Gee I think it's love girls, next you'll be sharing a bed eh

Kath - Oh shut up Gaffney, why do you have to find something dirty in everything?

Margo - Gee relax will ya, only trying to have a laugh in this dump

Kath grabs Brumby by the arm and drags her outside

Brumby - Hey take it easy, what's your problem?

Kath - I thought you wanted to turn over a new leaf after Rita saved you?

Brumby - Yeah I do? So?

Kath - So why are you hanging around with Gaffney? She's trouble

Brumby - Margo's alright, anyway, she's practically the only one talking to me right now

Kath - All I'm saying Brumby is that if you are serious about changing you should give some careful thought to who you choose to hang out with

Brumby - Yeah sure Kath, no worries

A police car pulls into Blackmoor with Spider inside

Paul is in a pub having a pint and looking downbeat when he spots Dwyer entering. Dwyer does not see him.

Dwyer approaches a woman and sits with her, the woman is Helen Smart

GATESLAM

PART 2

Paul is still watching as Dwyer and Helen leave the pub and walk across the road to a hotel. He follows them

Spider is with Malcolm

Malcolm - How are you feeling Simpson?

Spider shrugs

Spider - Yer I'm ok I suppose

Malcolm - You're very lucky it could have been a lot worse

Spider - Yer well I don't feel so bloody lucky, you try getting a lung full of smoke, see how lucky you feel

Malcolm - 6 people died Simpson, compared to them I'd say you were damn lucky

Spider shrugs

Spider - Did they manage to save Brumby Tucker?

Malcolm - Yes they did

Spider looks relieved

Spider - Well least that's something eh

Malcolm - Nice to see you showing some concern for others Simpson. I never saw much of that when you were at Barnehurst

Spider - I don't give a stuff bout Tucker, it's just she begged me for help and I promised her that's all. I didn't want to go back on my word, I'm glad she was rescued. Don't mean I give a stuff bout the bitch though

Malcolm holds his hands up in defeat

Malcolm - Ok Simpson I stand corrected then!!!

Spider - Look can I bloody well go now? Got a headache

Malcolm - Yes you can. I just wanted to see you, make sure you're fully recovered and ready to join the others

Spider - Yeah well I am. Bloody boring laid out in a hospital bed all day I can tell ya.

Paul is hanging around the hotel bar as Dwyer leaves in a hurry whilst doing up his tie. A short moment later Helen strolls down and orders a drink at the bar

SpIder arrives at the rec room.

Brumby and Margo are playing cards. Kath and Cheryl are playing pool, Lizzie is reading a newspaper. Vicki and Spike are absent, as is Marie

Kath - So you're back then?

SpIder - Yeah that's right...where's Vic?

Kath - I really have no idea Simpson, perhaps she heard that you were coming and hid

Kath and Cheryl share a giggle and Lizzie also joins in

Spider - Very funny Maxwell.

Kath - Do you know how Latham is?

Spider - Dunno, looked pretty rough when I saw her. But they reckon she might be well enough to come to Blackmoor's infirmary tomorra

Kath and Cheryl share a look

Spider looks at Brumby

Spider - Glad you got out Tucker

Brumby - Thanks...Kath told me you raised the alarm...thanks

Spider - Yeah well said I would didn't i....so I heard Connors died in the fire?

Cheryl - Yeah that's right. So?

Spider - Nothing, just wondered when the party is?

Cheryl - What bloody party? What ya on about?

Spider - The party to celebrate finally getting rid of that bikie bitch

Brumby - Shut up Simpson, Rita saved my life...Rita and Kath both did

Spider - Yeah big deal, she was still a bitch. I ain't sorry she's dead, good bloody riddance

Cheryl flies at Spider and grabs her by the throat

Cheryl - You want me to ram this pool cue down your throat bitch?

Kath pulls Cheryl away

Kath - Leave her Cheryl, that's what she wants, she's not worth it

Kath and Cheryl return to their game
