《To Learn to Let Go | ✔》Chapter 39

I woke up the next morning wrapped in Trent's strong arms. I smiled contentedly and snuggled even closer to the man I loved. "Good morning," he mumbled against my hair. I should have known he was already up. Even with me around he still never slept very much. He never left the bed early though, or woke me up, he just held me and let me sleep.

"Morning," I yawned as I looked up at his gorgeous face. Even in the morning with his bed head and sleep in his eyes he was the most gorgeous person in the world. I stared into his emerald eyes and thanked whatever force out there brought him to me. "What's the plan for today?" I asked to break myself from my trance.

"Can we go to my house? I just want to check on the place... I also wanted to maybe visit my dad?" He asked the last part sheepishly.

"Of course. Baby, you know I fully support you no matter what kind of relationship you decide to have with your dad, right?"

"I don't know I just feel like maybe I shouldn't want a relationship with him sometimes, like if I asked anyone they would tell me to stop speaking to him."

"I would never. It's complicated, and that's alright. I support you as much or as little as you want to talk to him."

"Thank you," he said as he kissed the top of my head. "You also have therapy today too."

"Fuck," I groaned. "I don't want to go, I'm fine!" I whined.

"Yeah, you're fine because of Dr. Meyer, so let's go! I'll drop you off and then when I pick you up we can go to the hospital."

"You want me to come with you?"

"Of course, I need you for moral support."

I reluctantly left the warmth and comfort of Trent's arms and got ready for the day. I had to sit in the waiting room for a bit at Dr. Meyer's, her previous client must have been going through a crisis because I could hear a lot of muffled yelling coming from her office. I didn't mind waiting, because this meant it cut into my appointment time, and to be honest, I didn't have much to talk to Dr. Meyer about. Things were going pretty well lately, and I was feeling good.

"I'm so sorry about the delay Grayson, you can come in now!" Dr. Meyer smiled as her last client walked out of the office. I reluctantly got up and sat down at my usual spot on the couch.

"So, how was this week?" She asked.

"Honestly? Kind of wild."

"What happened?"

"Trent and I had sex, Trent's dad nearly drank himself to death, Trent turned 18, I found out Trent applied to actual colleges...." I trailed off at the end as I noticed Dr. Meyer staring at me with her jaw dropped.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"Actually... I am." I said confidently.

"That's a lot to happen all in one week, especially for you. Are you sure you're doing okay?"

"Yeah. I mean... I felt ready for the sex, like I thought about it for a long time and it was what I wanted, and it was perfect. The situation with Trent's dad... it was a lot, but I just took deep breaths and kept myself grounded and focused on being there for Trent and I got through."

"Is his dad going to be okay?"

"Yeah, he had to have some surgeries, and now he's in rehab."

"Rehab?"

"Well yeah, the man's been an alcoholic for years, the hospital saw the obvious signs of that. They put him in a rehab program on sight. We're actually going to see him after I'm done here."

"And you're okay with seeing him, after last time?"

"He seems... different since the heart attack. He and Trent hashed out some things and I think they're starting to be on better terms."

"Well, he wants to go see him so that's a good sign."

"Yeah, I told him I support whatever kind of relationship he wants to have with his dad."

"I think that's really great, and really important to help him heal from all of that trauma too."

"Thanks Dr. Meyer," I said.

"So how was Trent's birthday?"

"It was great! He hates celebrating it but he let me make it a big deal."

"What did you do?"

"I made him dinner, and a cake, I gave him a really special gift. It was a really good night."

"Okay, and tell me more about Trent applying to schools?"

"He applied to some local colleges like Ryder and Rutgers. He doesn't know if he got accepted yet, but I think he'll get into Rutgers."

"How come?"

"His dad donates money to them."

"Ah, that's a good reason to suspect that then. How do you feel about the possibility of him going away to school?"

"Really good about it. Of course, I'll miss not seeing him every day. But I was worried about him after graduation, you know?"

"You're only a sophomore, right?" She asked.

"Yeah."

"Are you worried about the fact that Trent will be away at college for two years while you're still at high school?"

"Should I be?" I asked, now starting to panic a little. "I really wasn't worried until you just said something."

"It was just a question."

"I trust Trent, Dr. Meyer. I trust him not to cheat or ignore me or leave."

"Sounds like what you boys have is pretty solid." She said.

"Rock solid." I replied.

"I'm really proud to hear how you've handled this week, Grayson. The boy who came into my office a few months ago would have absolutely lost it."

"You've really helped me, Dr. Meyer. Yeah my past still fucks me up sometimes, but I know how to cope with any bad situations now."

"That's wonderful Grayson." She smiled wide at me. She looked proud of me. Tears started to well and a lump formed in the back of my throat. "What's the matter?"

"You just look really proud of me," I sniffled.

"I am, any therapist wants to see their clients grow the way you have."

"Thanks Dr. Meyer."

"Of course, sweetie. I was going to extend our session a little bit because of the late start, but why I don't I let you go. Enjoy your time with your boyfriend, enjoy being a kid."

"I'll see you next week Dr. Meyer, thank you." I said as I got up and left the office. I couldn't believe how emotional I had gotten in there, how I had been dreading that appointment before walking in and now I didn't even realize an hour had passed.

"Hey babe," Trent said as I hopped into his truck. "How was it?"

"Great. Dr. Meyer was super proud of how I handled this week. It kind of made me cry a bit."

"Aw, baby!" Trent cooed as he kissed my hand that he was now holding tightly in his. "I'm proud of you too. You've been my rock through everything."

"And you're mine." We smiled at each other for a brief moment before Trent turned his attention back to the road. "Alright, where to?" I asked. "Your house?"

"I already went while you were in therapy. Everything's fine over there. I did have some interesting mail though."

"Oh yeah? Who from?"

"Rutgers."

"Was it...?"

"I don't know I didn't open it. I wanted to wait for you and my dad."

"Okay love! So, to the hospital?"

"Yup!"
