《Hazelnut - Ryeji》19

"Why won't she pick up my call?" I asked myself while walking through the streets of Seoul.
I let out a sigh while looking at my phone. I called Yeji 5 times in a row, but she never answered one of them. I started to panic a little bit. 'Did something happen to her?' I wondered. I clicked my tongue and I placed my phone in my pocket.
I faced forward and I tightly held the bag of tteokbokki and Yeji's favourite hazelnut ice cream on my right hand. I looked around the road as I stopped walking.
I decided to get a taxi and go to the hospital that Yeji was sent to before. I thought that something happened to Yeji and she was probably taken to the hospital. My paranoid self kept on thinking about Yeji getting hit by a car or something that made my heart beat rapidly. To calm myself, I placed my hand on my chest as I inhaled and slowly exhaled.
On my left side, there were so many people who looked tired and kept on yawning while waiting for a taxi. On my right side, there was a huge crowd gathering.
I was a little confused. The blue and red siren of a police car and an ambulance painted almost the entire road with its light and colors. There was a crime scene that is meters away from me. All of the people present are taking pictures while their other hand is on their mouth. Their gestures made me assume that they saw something horrible or inhumane.
Even though I was a little disturbed just by looking at the terrified look on their faces, I got a little curious.
I inhaled and exhaled sharply. "Yeji, you're probably in the hospital right now. I'm sorry, but something caught my eyes." I said to myself. Without hesitation, I walked towards the crime scene.
As I was slowly walking, the wind got stronger. There were police officers and a group of medics walking around the crime scene with a frustrated look on their faces.
The 6 ft tall police officer gently shoved away the huge crowd that they gathered. "Move away please." He had a deep voice and he was shaking a little bit.
'I wonder what happened?' I thought to myself while I was carefully placing my steps on the pavement. The group of people moved away while holding their phones. They all looked like they were on the verge of vomiting.
Speaking of throwing up, I looked at my right side and there was a girl wearing a school uniform who is vomiting so much while her friends are patting her back.
I was a little disgusted watching the student vomit that I wasn't paying attention on what I was walking to.
I suddenly bumped on a police officer that made me snap out of my thoughts. I took a few steps backwards and I held my head as I looked at the man in front of me. He was sweating and he had a frightened expression on his face.
The man fixed his hat and looked at me in the eyes. "Kid, you don't wanna see this. Go home." He said.

I straightened my back and I placed both of my hands behind my back. "I'm really curious. Can I take a peek?" I politely asked.
The man crossed his arms and furrowed his eyebrows at me. "Please. Just go." He begged. The man's anxious-like tone made me even more curious.
My stubborn personality started kicking in. I dashed towards the police officer and shoved him away. I opened my eyes widely to take a look at the crime scene that made almost everyone vomit.
"What the hell?!" The man yelled and grabbed my arm.
I saw a girl lying down on the ground. Besides her, there was a bleeding man. The man was wearing a black outfit and he was getting checked by the medic. The girl, on the other hand, has a knife buried on her chest. She was wearing a dress. Her dress was torn apart and her face was bleeding. It was truly a gruesome sight. The girl had red hair and she looked very familiar that made me wonder.
The police officer pulled me away. "Brat!" He was tightly holding my arms while struggling to pull me away from the horrific sight.
"Officer, we couldn't revive this man." One of the medics suddenly spoke.
The man who was holding me clicked his tongue out of frustration. "Shit." He cursed. He let go of me and he held his head while looking around the crime scene. "Kid, go home." He said.
I nodded at the frustrated man. "Alright." I placed my hand in my pocket to get my phone so I can give Yeji a call. 'She's probably asleep earlier. Maybe, she's awake right now and sitting down like a cat.' I thought to myself and let out a quiet chuckle while thinking about how adorable Yeji is.
I took out my phone from my pocket and I turned it on. I turned around from the crime scene while looking for Yeji's number on my phone with my thumb. Behind me, a group of medics were cleaning the entire mess. The police officers were scanning the knife on the girl's chest with their eyes.
After a few seconds of searching, I finally found Yeji's number. I inhaled and exhaled through my mouth and started hoping that Yeji will answer my call. Without hesitation, I pressed the call button and I placed my phone by my ear.
I started tapping the ground with my foot while waiting for Yeji to answer my call. "Come on, Yeji." My anxiety skyrocketed once again.
"Whose phone is ringing?" One of the medics behind me asked.
I looked behind me and I noticed that all of the people in the crime scene are silent while looking around. A confused expression formed on my face when I heard a phone with a low sound ringing.
The tall police officer crouched on the ground while looking at the girl who has a knife on her chest. "I think the phone of this girl is ringing." He covered his nose with his right hand and used his left hand to locate a ringing phone in the girl's pocket.
I was too lost in my thoughts. I kept on thinking about Yeji while staring at the crime scene. The police officer squinted his eyes as he checked the phone of the dead girl.

"A person named Shin Ryujin is calling this girl." He said.
I gasped.
My eyes widened while looking at the police officer who was holding the girl's phone. I let go of my phone and the bag of food I was holding making them fall to the ground as I switched my attention to the dead girl who was lying down on the pavement.
"W-what?!" Without hesitation, I dashed towards the girl.
Tears started to form in my eyes as I only had one thought in mind, 'There's no way, right? this must be a coincidence.' All of the people in the crime scene had a puzzled look on their faces while watching me run towards the girl.
As I approached her, I kneeled down on the ground. "N-no. no. no." I said. The lips and nose of the dead girl is a lot similar to Yeji's.
I opened my palm and I wiped the blood and hair on her face. My heart got shattered into pieces as I recognized the person lying down in front of me. The tears that I tried to contain started falling down.
It was Yeji.
It was definitely her. I had no doubt in my mind. I sat down on the ground and I slightly raised Yeji's head and rested her head on my lap while looking at her. I didn't know how to react. I was in complete shock. Her face was filled with blood, that's why I didn't recognize her at first glance. "I-I...Y...Yej...." I couldn't speak a word. I kept on stammering.
"W-wake up. Please." I begged while struggling to breathe. I was feeling different kinds of emotions. I started brushing Yeji's hair while hoping for her to open her eyes. "Y-Yeji, wake up. We have to go on a date, remember?" I wiped my tears with my arm while whimpering.
One of the medics took off his hat and looked at me. "We're sorry. We couldn't save your friend."
I glared at him. "Take the fucking knife off her chest!" I pointed at the knife that is buried on Yeji's chest.
I switched my attention to Yeji and I couldn't stop crying while looking at her. Her eyes were closed and she wasn't breathing whatsoever. "Y-Yeji, everything's going to be fine." I weakly said. "Wake up now a-and we're going t-to eat tteokbokki a-and ice cream. You look really pretty with that red hair." I forced a smile.
The police officer behind me put his hand on my shoulder. "We're very sorry. Your friend was mercilessly killed by that dead man." He pointed at the man besides Yeji with his index finger.
I clenched both of my fists and I gritted my teeth. I placed my hands on my face as my tears started falling down like rain in a thunderstorm.
I started sobbing.
I was crying in a loud manner as I couldn't imagine what horror Yeji went through. The giant wound on my heart grew bigger as seconds go by. It was more painful than that time when I tried to hang myself. "Damn it, Yeji. Wake up please!" I yelled.
The man behind me started patting my back. "Kid, we have to clean this mess."
I stopped crying for a moment. I wiped my tears and I kept sniffing because of my runny nose. "W-where will you take my Yeji?"
"They will take your friend to the hospital and call her family." He explained.
I looked at Yeji once again. I looked at her for seconds, but I was still unable to process things. Her death was too sudden and unpredictable.
This proves that this world is truly cruel.
I wiped my tears while looking at the medics prepare a stretcher and a big piece of cloth. "Y-Yeji, stop fooling around. I-I know you're still alive." My tears started falling down rapidly once again.
The police officer offered his hand to me. "Kid, you should go home."
I shoved his hand away and I wrapped my arms around Yeji's face and I started sobbing. Even though I have been looking at Yeji's unconscious body for minutes, I was still unable to accept the fact that she's dead.
Acceptance is a giant staircase and I am currently standing on the first step.
"Y-Yeji, I-I love you, Yeji. Yeji, I-I love you!" I kept on yelling the same words while hugging Yeji's bleeding face. Her blood got on my outfit, but it didn't matter to me whatsoever. "Please wake up! Please!"
I wanted to take Yeji to the amusement park after our date. I wanted to take Yeji to a romantic ride and take pictures of us and confess to her. I wanted to hold Yeji's hand until the end of her time. I wanted to hug Yeji and let her know that she's not alone.
But now she's gone.
I wasn't able to tell her what I truly feel. I couldn't imagine what Yeji was thinking of after she was mercilessly stabbed on the chest. Thinking about a crying and desperate Yeji made me even more miserable. The thought of Yeji crying, bleeding, and struggling alone while asking for help brought my depression back.
I couldn't believe that the last words I personally said to Yeji was, "I can't wait to see you tomorrow."
I stopped crying and I compressed my quivering lips while sniffing. I carefully rested Yeji's head on the ground and I held my head with my hands that are filled with blood.
My head was spinning and I was dizzy as my vision became blurry. It was obvious that I was on the verge of passing out, but I wished for death.
So I can be with Yeji.
I clenched both of my fists and I wiped my tears while craving for air. I was struggling to breathe due to crying so much. I looked at Yeji and I was still hoping that she would open her eyes and greet me with a hug.
I held Yeji's hand and said, "Y-Yeji, I'm sorry." My final words before letting the medics take Yeji away from me.

God complex
A hero is summoned to another world, vanquishes evil, yadda yadda, saves the kingdom and lives happily ever after. There is no such hero in this story. Just a desperate youth with great ambition and very little to lose. A zero to hero style story set in a country clearly inspired by modern USA with just as many issues and the minority of mages often pulling strings from the shadows. I am also hoping the whole thing won't turn out edgy enough to cut me. I want to rely on actual good writing rather than cheap powertrip gimmicks. edit: Please don't mind Zetari's salty review. He is quite literally making up any use of the torture and human experimentation trope and says MC is blank after 4 chapters where he conveniently stops reading just at the start of his first character development. For extra entertainment, I will be uploading chapters two at a time and compose a relevant poem through the chapter names. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
