《Hazelnut - Ryeji》16

"Good morning, Unnie!" My sister greeted me with a big smile on her face while sitting down on her chair and eating cereal.
I started stretching my limbs as I let out a big yawn. It was a beautiful morning. There were birds chirping outside and the smell of the pancakes that my talented sister cooked entered my nostrils, releasing a mesmerizing butter-like scent.
It made my stomach growl.
"Morning, Yuna." I greeted my sister and sat down across her.
I was in a good mood.
Even though I got punched yesterday and I have a bruise on my cheek, I still have a happy face because Yeji and I reconciled with each other after a quarrel at her house.
I looked at the table. I picked up my utensils and picked up a pancake and put it on my plate. I was ready to ruthlessly devour my breakfast, but I hesitated when Yuna is looking at me while smiling broadly. She looked like she wanted to tell me something but hesitating.
"Yuna, stop smiling at me. It's creepy." I cut off a piece from the pancake on my plate and I impaled it with my fork. Without hesitation, I put the food in my mouth.
As the small piece of pancake entered my mouth and touched my taste buds, I let out a sigh of relief as I found myself lost in a magical daydream. 'Yuna's cooking never disappoints.' I thought to myself.
"Unnie, Mom and Dad went on a date." Yuna giggled.
My stardust reverie was shattered into pieces. My eyes widened out of happiness. "R-really?" I asked because it's been a while since I heard those words.
Yuna nodded. "Yep!"
I dropped the fork I was holding and a big smile formed on my face as I swallowed the small piece of pancake inside my mouth. "Yuna, they didn't fight or anything? it's a real date?"
Yuna nodded again. "Yeah. Dad actually got promoted and he was in a good mood. While Mom, she originally wanted to get a divorce, but they decided to talk about it like normal civilized people."
My world lit up.

It feels like my life became better when I met Yeji. I held my head as I couldn't handle the good news my younger sister is giving to me. "Yuna, I'm so happy."
"Me too." She replied.

It's a beautiful monday.
After a fantastic breakfast with my sister, I walked through the hallway of our school with a giant smile on my face.
My whisker dimples started to show and I noticed that it caught the attention of the other students. There were boys looking at me, but some were girls.
On my left side, there were blue lockers and on my right side, they were white lockers. There were students walking around with their friends.
As I was only a meter away from my classroom, I inhaled and sharply exhaled as I can't wait to see Yeji and her eyesmile.
I decided to confess to her.
I wanted to show Yeji that I feel something towards her. Inside the bag I am carrying on my back, there is a rose and a box of chocolates. While my left hand is occupied as it is holding a plastic bag with a big container of Yeji's favourite chocolate hazelnut ice cream inside it.
I can't wait to see Yeji's face when I give her what I have with me.
As I am now facing the door to my classroom, I put on a big smile and I placed my right hand on the metal doorknob.
Without hesitation, I opened the door.
I entered my classrom while looking around. My classmates were playing, some were waiting for classes to start, and some were sleeping.
My eyes wandered around the four-corner room and the smile on my face dissolved into a sad look.
Yeji wasn't present.
I was ready to sit down besides Yeji and put my arm around her shoulders and whisper my true feelings to her ears, but she wasn't in the classroom.
Out of nowhere, I felt a hand on my shoulder that made me snap out of my thoughts.
I let out a small smile as I was expecting Yeji behind me. I turned around without hesitation.
The smile on my face disappeared.

It was our teacher. The man in his 40s who chased Yeji and I before. He had a frustrated look on his face and his black hair was all messy.
"G-good morning." I said.
The man gently pulled me out of the classroom. He placed his right hand on the door knob and closed the door.
He crossed his arms and looked at me. "You're close with Yeji, right?"
I slowly nodded. "Yeah. Did something happen to her?" I asked with a hint of worry.
The man let out a concerned look that made me a little confused. "Ryujin, you see...." He clicked his tongue struggling to construct a sentence. "Yeji's parents called me earlier. They said that Yeji suffered a seizure last night." He said. "She's in the hospital right now."
My eyes widened.
My heart started beating so fast and my breathing became unstable. I was worried that Yeji's cancer is worsening.
"C-can I visit her?" I nicely asked.
"Yeji is currently sleeping. Her parents are updating me every hour." The man placed his hand behind my back. "You should go to your classroom and visit Yeji after classes."
A sad expression formed on my face. I was running out of patience, but I still chose to obey him. "Alright." I nodded.
--
Knock knock
I gently opened the door to Yeji's hospital room while holding a basket of fruits with a small smile on my face. I was worried about Yeji, but I decided to throw away my negative thoughts. I was scared that Yeji might die in her sleep.
As my foot steps on the vinyl floor, I closed the door. I faced forward and my eyes widened a little bit at what I saw.
Yeji was dancing while holding her phone that is playing music. She was dancing like nothing happened. Her movements were so precise.
I quietly entered Yeji's room and started looking around. I was a little fascinated, but a little worried that Yeji is dancing instead of resting.
Yeji was facing the window while happily singing, "Not shy! not me! ITZ-" Yeji turned around.
"Ryujin?!" She yelled and her face turned as red as a cherry tomato. She was obviously embarassed.
I let out a small chuckle while looking at her. I walked towards her and I placed the basket of fruits I was holding on the table besides Yeji's bed.
Yeji turned off the music playing and she fixed her beanie. "What are you doing here?"
I placed my hands behind my back and smiled at her. "Are you okay?" I answered her question with a question.
Yeji nodded. "I'm fine."
I raised my right eyebrow at her. "Really?"
Yeji compressed her lips and her eyes became watery. She looked at me with her puppy eyes and it completely shattered my heart.
Yeji shook her head. "No. I'm not." She suddenly ran towards me and hugged me. "I-I had a seizure in my sleep. I almost died." She said.
I gently put my hand on Yeji's back to calm her down. "Do your friends know about this?" I asked.
"N-no. I-"
Yeji was cut off when someone suddenly knocked two times on the door.
"Shoot. I think it's Lia and Chaeryeong." Yeji said with a hint of worry.
The door slowly opened. I quickly broke the hug because I was afraid that the two noisy friends might think that something is happening between Yeji and I.
"Lia!" Yeji yelled while looking at her friends.
The two girls entered Yeji's hospital room with a puzzled look on their faces. "What is she doing here?" Lia pointed at me while walking towards Yeji.
"Yep. Why is she here, Yeji?" Chaeryeong asked.
Yeji let out a laugh and hugged her friends that caught them off guard. "I miss you too!"
I let out a small smile while looking at Yeji. Her eyes were no longer watery and her giant smile was back. I waved my hand at Yeji and I slowly walked away.
"Y-Yeji, what the hell happened to you?" Lia asked as she was struggling to breathe in Yeji's arms.
"I hurt my ankle!" Yeji said.
Yeji switched her attention to me and waved her hand. "I'll see you tomorrow." She murmured at me.
