《Chasing Royalty》Chapter 54

"Did you pull a knife on me in the night?" I whispered.

I heard him shuffling behind me. Probably trying to keep his morning (cough) wood from poking my back. I opened my eyes a bit to see that the sun hasn't risen yet, but its light can now be seen from the horizon ahead. My eyes started to close again, ready to go back to dreamland when I felt that Nate is still moving behind me.

"Will you please stop moving?"

He stilled. As much as I want to laugh at his face because he's probably embarrassed, I am still sleepy and very much want to go back to sleep. When sleep finally took over my body again, I felt something vibrating at my side, but I didn't bother myself.

And now, I'm awake.

In my bed.

Alone.

The sun is finally spilling its morning light in my room.

As if last night never happened.

As if it was all just a dream.

Ugh! I knew it. It's too good to be true.

I don't understand. I'm positive that what happened last night wasn't just a dream. That those walks and talks that Nate and I shared last night was not just a mere illusion of my imagination while sleeping.

Did he carry me back or something?

What about the part when something part of him was poking my back?

Was it just a dream?

I'm sure that I was half sleeping that time. I laughed. Whether it's a dream or not, it's still funny. Me knowing what exactly it is that's poking my back pretended to be naïve about it. And him trying his best to hide his "knife" by moving but failing and only annoying me because I can't sleep. He probably waited until I fell asleep before started moving again.

A knock pulled me out of my reverie.

"Hey, Carter!" came the undeniable voice of the very person I was thinking.

"Yeah?"

"Are you awake?"

I rolled my eyes. "Well, obviously."

I heard his chuckle from outside. "Yeah, how stupid of me."

"I'm glad you know."

This time, I managed to elicit a laugh out of him. I smiled. Then his laughter died down. And then there was silence. I stared at the door, as if willing the door to open so Nate can come in and sweep me out of my―

"Well, I just wanted to say that breakfast is ready downstairs. Gran and Gramps wanted to give you a tour in the vineyard."

"Okay." My voice seemed high-pitched than usual. I cleared my throat. "I'll be down in a moment."

I immediately scrambled out of the bed to press my ears to the door. I waited and waited until I heard his footsteps walking down the stairs.

The room they gave me has its own bathroom, so I went there to wash the remnants of my sleep, and quickly put on a white and yellow Sunday dress. I checked myself out on the mirror.

I look decent enough so no need for any makeup, and then I let my hair down. I looked closely and noticed that the real color of my hair is starting to be visible.

Oh gods

Wait, why am I worrying?

Last night, if I remember correctly, I confessed my identity to Nate. Okay, maybe not the identity, but what I really am. And if I'm not mistaken, I heard him say the words: "I know."

Oh gods

He knows!

When?

How?

Calm down. Calm down. You will find out soon enough.

Deep breaths

Deep breaths

Deep breaths

By the time I got down, the table has already been set. The foods laid out on the table can be considered a feast. There are pancakes, waffles, hotdogs, bread, and... are those s'mores?

"Come dear, we've been waiting for you."

Old Nathaniel is seated next his wife just opposite where Nate is seated. I smiled and took a seat next to Nate.

"I feel like we're having a feast," I said as I eyed everything that's on the table.

"Nate said that you're not really a fan of coffee so I decided to make you hot chocolate instead," Amy said, and my eyes widened.

"You made all these?" I asked, completely amazed.

I was even beyond surprised that everything on the table tasted so heavenly. Amy made me try at least one of everything, and honestly, I loved everything.

The old couple shared more about their experiences here in the country. They talked about how wines are made, what kind of grapes should be harvested and anything and everything in the land they own.

I was on the last piece of my pancake, and I think I was even more full than I will ever be in my life when they asked if I want a tour in their vineyard. While nodding in reply, I had this stupid smile plastered on my face when they personally offered.

"I would love to," I answered as I looked at Nate, "and the breakfast is amazing, by the way."

"Well, it's not every day that Nate and someone special is visiting us."

"Gramps..."

"What?" he looked at us, "you haven't even stayed here for twenty-four hours, and you're leaving before nightfall."

I almost spewed my drink upon hearing our unexpected departure.

Did I hear that right?

"I'm sorry, what?"

Amy reached for my hand across the table. She looked at me as if she's used to this kind of events.

"It's okay, darling. It would seem that someone is eager to make your dreams come true," she smiled knowingly, and I have no idea what that means.

"Uhm... It's actually supposed to be a surprise, Nana."

"What kind of surprise is that?" I asked, my eyebrows scrunching up into a frustrated frown. I mean, what kind of surprise is that? I repeated in my head. "Your grandfather's right, we haven't even stayed here for more that twenty-four hours, and you wanted to fly us out of here? You haven't even properly reunited with them."

His grandfather spoke up, "Well, at least he has a very good reason for leaving."

"I'm so sorry, sir. But I don't think I want to be the reason to cut this reunion."

I felt Amy gave a squeeze to my hand, and my eyes looked at her again. "It's okay, dear. Nate explained to us everything. About your situation"

Are they talking about the situation? As in my situation? Crap. I ruined a reunion. Wait, does that mean they know as well?

Before I could even say anything, Old Nathaniel stood up and announced that we can have the tour in thirty minutes.

I thanked them for the amazing breakfast and was about to go back to my room when Nate took my hand.

"Hey..."

I cut him off before he could complete his statement. "What? Pack my things? We're flying out of here?"

He groaned. "Look. I understand that you're mad because I keep on dragging you―"

"Why aren't you staying here with your grandparents?" I demanded, "I know what you're trying to do. You're trying to fulfill every dream I told you before I go back, and knowing my situation, it won't be long before I was found out."

"Situation?" he asked, confused. "What situation?"

I blinked. Why is he looking at me like that? "My situation, my position in..." I trailed, looking at him expectantly.

"What are you talking about? What position? And what about you being found out?"

Oh. My. God.

It's a dream. It was a dream. Or is this some sort of a nightmare? I told him. I know I told him. I was probably sleepy and was about to doze off, but I can't be mistaken.

You did wake up on your own bed, instead of being with him under that tree. A nagging voice suddenly emerged from the depths of my mind as realization struck me like lightning.

"Did something happen last night? Something special?" I asked, hardly making out the words.

"What do you mean special?" he asked, and I saw that confusion is clearly etched on his face. "Why? What happened last night?"

"We had a..." I stuttered. "Where were you last night at around midnight?" I finally voiced out, dreading the answer.

He frowned, and I held my breath. "Uhm... sleeping? What else?"

I stared at him in disbelief. Suddenly I feel lightheaded. I feel like my legs will give out any minute.

"Why? Are you okay? You suddenly look pale," he said, concern in his voice.

Before I could do anything, his grandparents saw us and smiled.

"Ready for the tour?"

*****

I wasn't really able to enjoy the tour as my mind was elsewhere. I saw that Amy was continuously glancing in my direction. She probably sensed that something was up because not only did she repeatedly glance in my direction, she's also trying so hard to get my attention. I really appreciated the tour of the vineyard as well as all the information I absorbed, no matter how little they are considering I was only half listening.

I tried to focus. I looked at the grapes. I tasted some samples in the storage? Warehouse? I think. I tried to divert my attention and focus solely on everything they say about the whole place. But I just kept on drifting back to the events earlier. After finding out that what happened last night was most probably just an illusion in my dreams, I felt like the burden that I was carrying was even doubled.

When I thought I told Nate about my identity, I felt like I was able to pluck out the thorn from my heart. But now, it felt like an arrow just struck me through the heart.

We are trudging through the vineyard as we made our way to the hilltop. And we stopped at the spot where Nate and I supposedly cuddled and slept.

It was already lunch time when we wrapped up the tour, so we set up the blanket we had on the grass and started taking out the food we brought from the house.

It was quiet. Nobody broke the silence as we eat. I was so absorbed with my own thoughts that I didn't realize everyone was already done with their lunch.

We made our way back to the house. As the two men started walking away, talking about their businesses, I lagged behind. And Amy decided to walk beside me.

"You know, you don't have to be upset about not staying for too long." That got me out my thoughts, "Are you still mad about him for leaving too early?"

"I don't understand him sometimes," I admitted. But my statement should have been more like: I don't understand my life anymore.

I heard Amy chuckled. "Mostly, those words would come out from men. But anyway, have you already packed?"

"I don't' want to bother anymore."

"You can leave your things here if you want."

My eyes widened, and she just laughed at my expression, "You don't have to worry dear. We'll take good care of everything you own."

"I'm sorry but I can't do that. I-I didn't mean it like that. I just..."

We were already just outside the house when we stopped walking. "Nate seemed to be eager to get out of here. You and he will be driving back to where his private jet or plane is."

I stared at her in disbelief, only now did I realized that we would be leaving as soon as we finished this conversation. I was about to march towards Nate, but I noticed that he was already waiting at the car.

For the last time, Amy took my hand, and sincerely looked into my eyes.

"Don't worry, dear. We'll be seeing each other again. Besides, I am quite sure that you will be more than excited once you know the next place Nate chose for your adventure."

Old Nathaniel placed a hand on his wife's shoulder as he looked at her lovingly before looking at me.

"We should. Although, I can see that my grandson can certainly make you happy, I have this little fear that somehow he might ruin everything."

"Well, that only proves that he is your grandson, after all."

I laughed wholeheartedly. They gave me one final tight hug.

"Thank you so much for welcoming me here in your home."

After that, I found myself brooding on the passenger seat beside Nate. And I couldn't care less on our next adventure as I stared longingly at the direction of his grandparents' home.
