《Chasing Royalty》Chapter 41

The streets of Santorini are amazing. There are lights everywhere but not the kind of lights you will see in New York.

No.

The lights here are far from the lights of New York.

City lights are colorful and lively. Lights here are serene and romantic.

New York is a city full of hustle and bustle. Here, everything seemed peaceful. Even if there are handfuls of people, they all seemed to be friendly. Most are tourists, I can tell.

We've been walking around for I don't know how long until I finally saw some stores. I don't know if I was just blind or Nate is just such a great company because I haven't noticed any stores until we stopped talking.

Ahem. It just started with him apologizing for being rude earlier, and me saying that it was okay. I listened to him complain about the deal he lost in Switzerland, which made me tiptoe on the words I was saying. Then, he started to describe how beautiful the land was and how his clients will be happy about the deal once it was presented. I told him how sorry I am about the news, not really, as well as how I wanted to see the land for myself, even though I already had.

That's it. That was just the things we talked about. Nothing more. Nothing less.

We walked in a store and found ourselves surrounded by clothes, particularly of women clothing. I was staring at one certain white dress when Nate came up behind me.

"Choose whatever you want."

I glanced at him. "I think this would look good on Jessica."

"If you're going to buy her a dress, might as well, buy something for you, too."

I smiled, facing him. "Okay."

I tried on so many clothes, from shirts to dresses. Every time I walk out from the fitting room, Nate would either be speechless or insult the outfit that are which I think was too revealing. So, I decided to take the clothes that made him speechless, which consists of mostly light-colored dresses. I was about to pay for the things I took when I remembered the dress I'll give to Jessica. I walked back to where it was hanged and stared at it for longer than a moment, picturing her in my mind wearing it.

I smiled. She's going to love it. Especially, from knowing that it came from her paradise.

I went back to the counter and found myself wondering what happened to the dresses I was about to pay. Then I saw Nate holding two paper bags in each hand of course, which he doesn't have earlier.

I walked up to him. "You paid for them?"

"Obviously," he said in a smug grin.

"You don't have to."

"Well, what are you going to do about it?" he asked in a playful manner.

I folded my arms on my chest, narrowed my eyes at him before raising an eyebrow.

"Now, come on. Go buy that dress already. There are still many stores left to go to."

I glared at him. "You know I have my own money. I can buy my own things."

"I see you took the clothes that made me speechless, so I guess I should pay because you chose them for my benefit," he countered, wiggling his eyebrows.

I blushed, knowing he's right. The floor suddenly looked good. I was thinking of a good retort when he beat me to it.

"You can think of an incredible retort later. Right now, just buy that dress for your best friend. That'll give you some time." I was probably redder than a tomato when I glared at him. He laughed. "Come on, Carter. We're not here to fight. Loosen up a bit. Besides, I dragged you here with me. It's the least I could do."

I sighed as I look at him. The twinkle of amusement is still visible in his eyes.

Maybe going to the counter and paying Jessica's dress will cool my face down. It did for a moment. When I came back to Nate, the smug grin is still on his face.

My face is still burning when we entered another shop. This time, it's a jewelry shop, well because it's full of jewelry; necklaces, bracelets, rings, everything.

The lady who owned the shop walked up to me and asked if I was an American. The curls of her hair, her overall facial features as well as the accent scream that she's a true-blooded Greek. It kind of reminds me of the stories I have read.

When I said yes, she pointed at Nate and asked if she was my boyfriend. I blushed again, unable to answer. And at that exact moment Nate turned his head and gave me the smile.

The lady laughed and walked to one of the shelves. I stayed frozen at my place as I watch the lady beckoned Nate to come. I didn't hear their conversation but as they finished, Nate gave the lady a heartwarming smile. He proceeded to the counter and I saw him holding another bag.

He walked back to me still with the smile.

"Come on. You must be hungry. I know a place."

*****

"Ambrosia?" Nate asked.

"Yeah," I said. "It's the food of the gods. Nectar is the drink."

"I heard my mom saying that only gods and demigods could eat and drink those two or else they will combust."

"That is correct. The food and drink of the gods are not for mortals. It is a sign that only those who have the blood of divinity can withstand such food and drink."

I watched as Nate started to eat his food with gusto. He's probably thinking that he's some sort of Greek god because of the name of the food and the information I just told him.

I laughed at the idea that suddenly popped in my mind.

Time to deflate your ego, baby!

"Did you know that the word 'tantalize' came from the word Tantalus?" I asked, trying to keep myself from smirking on what I'm about to say.

He raised an eyebrow.

"Well, in Greek mythology, there is this guy named Tantalus. He was once a king. And he has a son. Tantalus has the privilege of dining with the gods. He was believed to be a son of Zeus, so yeah, he can eat ambrosia and can drink nectar. He wants to bring some divine foods to the mortals but the gods forbid him. He was upset because he felt humiliated and deprived. So to avenge himself, he devised a plan. He invited all the gods to his table and served them their dinner."

"I don't think I want to know the ending. Does it involve this restaurant?"

I shushed him. "No, this restaurant or any restaurant has nothing to do with it. I'm not done. Just listen." I finally let out a grin as I continue with the story. "While the gods were eating, they asked for Tantalus' son."

"Oh god. Stop."

"Then they realized the gruesome thing Tantalus did." I said, holding down my laugh as I watched Nate's face turned sour. "The dinner that was served to the gods was actually Tantalus' son." I finished as I looked at Nate. He was trying to hold down the food he just finished eating.

I burst out laughing when he ran towards the washroom.

I was laughing so hard because of what happened. I've already pictured it but seeing it unfold was really hilarious.

After maybe thirty minutes or so, Nate finally settled his stomach down and was able to drive us back to our place. Even though he kept glaring at me, I still can't stop myself from laughing.

It was already 10 when we got back. When Nate went straight to his room, I decided to explore the house. Just as I thought, the walls are all painted white. There's a small pool at the side which has this great view of the ocean. There were two chairs and a coffee table between.

There are still lights at the streets.

The island is beautiful. But of course, even though I think the lights here are better than that of New York's, I still prefer the lights above. No matter where I am, the skies will always be my comfort.

I didn't hear Nate behind me until he spoke up.

"Hey."

I looked up and saw him carrying two cups. "Hey."

"I got you some milk," he said, giving me the other cup as he settled onto the other chair.

"I thought you were already asleep, since you just spilled your guts," I teased, and watched his face turned sour from the memory.

He glared at me again. "Don't remind me."

There was a moment of silence before I decided to ask what's on my mind.

"Do you have a house here? In Greece, I mean?"

He looked at the ocean in front of us. "No."

I glanced at him.

"But I think I might want to have one."

"That's good," I said. "This place is full of wonder."

He snorted. "What you told me was not wonderful."

I laughed again.

After that, the night ended with peaceful silence before we retired to our rooms.
