My Ghost

After the semi-successful mission, the group arrived back in Washington. Steve went up to talk to Fury, kept on mumbling about different missions, as Natasha and Ana stayed back in the weaponry wing. The girls changed back into their normal clothes, letting their uniforms hang on the racks.

"How you been, Nat?" Ana asked, walking out of the room with her friend.

Nat smirked at her, "Oh you know me, I've been keeping busy with Steve, helping him adjust. He's even got this small book where he writes down everything he missed." She said, checking her phone.

Ana raised an eyebrow at her, "Is Steve okay? I can't imagine him being fine with everything." She said, pushing the door that led outside open and holding it for Nat to get through.

"He's fine. He's like an old man. Hey, I gotta check something out. You gonna be alright on your own?" Natasha asked, walking up to her black corvette. Ana whistled at the car, waving her off, "I'll be fine, see you later, yeah?" She nodded, putting her hands in her pockets as Natasha entered her car.

Ana stood at the sidewalk, watching Nat drive off and give her a few beeps. Ana chuckled and gave a wave before turning and walking down the footpath. She didn't know how much she missed Washington until she saw at all the famous landmarks and beautiful parks. It had to be around five years since she left.

She opened her phone, going on the map app. She wanted to go by the Smithsonian Museum, remembering how Steve talked about an exhibition on his behalf. She thought she should go and check it out, having studied the wars and this could be like a throwback to her University field trips.

Ana hailed a cab and told the drive to take her to the museum. She sat back and enjoyed the scenery, liking her time off even if it was for a few hours.

- - -

On her way to the Museum, Ana found that there was a large amount of police cars zooming past her. Ana told the cab driver to stop and she quickly got out. That was when her hearing picked up the gun shots, a lot of them. She dashed in the direction of the screams and bangs, her heart quickening in fear of what she will see once she got there.

Ana spotted a car flipping backwards towards a huddling family. She skidded to a stop, timing it perfectly when the car did it's final flip, almost crushing the family of three. She crouched down and held her arms up as the car landed on her, using her strength to toss it aside. The little boy's mouth was agape as he stared at her. She breathed heavily, ushering the people to get to safety.

"Go into that building, now! And don't move!" She exclaimed, gently pushing the mother and father who held their son tightly to the direction of the small building, away from all the chaos.

A few 'police' snapped their heads in her direction, shouting in protest when she ran to them. When she approached, one of them pointed a gun at her head. She gave him a blank look, "You must be the bad guys." She said, before crushing the barrel of the gun, surprising the men and fighting them off.

She heard one of them speak into their radios in Russian. She understood every word and clenched her jaw, "Hydra." She whispered to herself.

She flipped over a car, landing in front of the man with the radio and smiled at him, "Skazhite, kto nakhoditsya na drugoy storone etogo vyzova, chtoby stoyat' vniz." (Tell whoever's on the other side of that call to stand down.) She said sweetly in Russian.

His eyes flickered to his weapon and reached for his gun on the ground but she was faster and stepped on it. She grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, yanking him up face to face. "Bad move." She growled before head butting him, earning a yell. She tossed him aside when she heard more screaming up ahead.

When she ran, she didn't sense the bullet coming her way until it hit her square in the thigh. She tripped over her feet, crying out at the pain. Her bare arms scraped against the gravel as she slid forward.

She shakily put pressure on her thigh, lifting her head up to try and spot the shooter. Her hearing picked up a voice and she found that it was coming from the overturned black car.

She squinted her eyes, "Fury?" She whispered, standing up and hobbling to the car.

"Ana, stand down. Leave me. You have no chance against him." She heard him rasp out.

Ana furrowed her eyebrows, quickening her pace when she heard the sound of Fury cry out in pain. "Him?"

"Zdravstvuyte, Ana."

Ana widened her eyes at the familiar voice. It was him, the Winter Soldier. She caught his figure emerging from the smoke that was coming from Fury's car. He aimed a machine gun at her and she noticed the small shrug he gave.

"Ty ne moya missiya, tak chto vniz." (You're not my mission, so back down.) He demanded. He knew she could hear him and she reached back for her pistol.

"Ya nikuda ne poydu, soldat." (I am not going anywhere, soldier.) She said to herself, aiming at him.

When he dropped his weapon, Ana started shooting. She ran forward as he jumped up on the car, quickly looking inside to see no Fury in sight. He looked up at her, dodging each bullet and when she was out, he jumped forward and tackled her down.

Ana groaned when his weight pushed her down hard, her head bouncing against the gravel. She pushed him off her and stood to her feet, wincing as her wound stung. She caught his metal fist that was meant to punch her jaw, using her strength to crush it slightly.

"Chto vy khotite s F'yuri?!" (What do you want with Fury?!) She shouted, pushing him away.

His feet glided against the gravel when she pushed him back and he glared at her, "Ya ne khochu yego, oni delayut." (I don't want him, they do.) He answered huskily.

Ana was getting worked up with her wound burning and seeing him again just brought back bad memories. Painful memories. She noticed the way he started backing up instead of fighting her and she stepped forward, raising her hands.

"Ya ne sdelal s vami." (I'm not done with you.) She told him.

His mask that covered his face also covered his smirk as he gave her a nod, "Pover'te mne, kogda ya govoryu, ya tozhe. Do svidaniya Ana." (Trust me when I say, me too. Goodbye Ana.) He said just when the ambulance and real Washington police showed up.

Ana took her eyes off him for one second, which was a mistake because he disappeared. She grounded her teeth, kneeling to the ground when her legs couldn't keep her up any longer. A paramedic ran to her, immediately putting pressure on her wound.

"Are you okay, lady? We need to take you to a hospital."

"Get the civilians first, leave me. I have something to do."

Ana examined Fury's ruined car, seeing the large hole that lead into the tunnels. She knew he was hit badly and if he didn't get any medical attention, SHIELD will have to find a new director and Ana did not want someone else telling her what to do. Fury was her mentor, she had to find him.

The paramedic that approached her earlier wrapped her wound up, telling her she was crazy not to go to the hospital. She just waved him off and ran away, tracking her boss' footsteps in the sewer. Now, it's not the most beautiful places to take a stroll, it was dark and smelled nasty. It was times like this when Ana hated her enhanced senses.

She lifted her shirt to cover her nose and used her phone's flashlight to light the way. She frowned at the blood puddles, her stomach churning, scared if the next thing she finds is her boss' body on the ground. But Fury was a tough cookie, he wouldn't let the Winter Soldier take him down that easily.

Now, the Winter Soldier. He was a pain in the ass for Ana. She and Nat had come across him, both earning scars. But once she was on a solo mission, your average bag and tag. There was a suspected terrorist posing as a senator in Japan and it was up to Ana to interrogate and bring him in. But she never got the chance because the Winter Soldier beat her to him, shooting him right in the head in front of hundreds. Ana tried to chase him but he was like a ghost.

Another time, when she went undercover in Italy tailing an arms dealing gang. When she closed in on one of their biggest exports, she counted ten dead in the warehouse, one barely alive. It was when he came back to finish the last one off, she fought him with all she had. His metal arm crushed all 27 bones in her hand. After that, Fury always had Ana pair up with other agents, not wanting her to get hurt.

When she saw light from the streets up ahead, she jogged to the ladder and climbed up to the streets. It was getting dark and Ana had a bad feeling. She heard glass breaking, making her attention go up to the building where she saw two figures.

She widened her eyes, "Steve!"

The Winter Soldier caught the shield Steve threw at him, his feet at the edge of the building. When he heard Ana's voice he threw back the shield harshly and jumped off the building and into the alleyway.

"Shit, shit, shit." Ana cursed, running into the building. She fumbled with the door handle that lead to the staircase. Once she was up on the roof, Steve ran up to her, his eyes crazed. Before Ana could say anything, Steve spoke up,

"Fury, he's down."

- - -

Ana ran through the hallways of the hospital. Everything around her seemed to blur. She didn't have time to think about what was going around her, she just had to get to Fury's room.

She weaved between the STRIKE team that was blocking the entrance way. Ana heard Rumlow calling after her but she ignored him, and stopped beside Steve. She looked into operating room where Nick laid on the table covered in plastic.

"How bad is it?" Ana whispered.

"Really bad." Maria replied.

"He's dropping." The doctor cried out with tools in his hands as the machines beeped furiously.

Ana watched the scene before her eyes, listening to the beeping sounds.

"Nurse, help me with the gauzes, please. BP is dropping. Defibrillator!" Steve, Natasha, Ana and Maria watched in shock as Fury started flatlining. "Charge to one hundred." The doctor ordered, and gave Fury another shock. He looked at the green screen.

"No pulse."

"Okay. Charge to two hundred, please. Stand back! Three, two, one. Clear!" He shocked Fury again, Ana literally feeling the large electric shock, stepping back with a hand over her mouth. The doctor turned to the nurses. "Give me epinephrine! Pulse?"

"Negative." The first doctor replied.

"Don't do this to me, Nick," Natasha whispered. "Don't do this to me."

She was only voicing what everyone else was thinking right now. They couldn't loose him, not now. Unfortunately, Fury's line was flat and long. There was no hope in bringing him back from the dead.

Steve turned beside Ana, and walked away. Ana swallowed hard and watched Natasha leave the window as well, leaving Ana with Hill. Maria looked away from the window, and dropped her eyes down to the floor. Ana dropped her head in sadness, letting herself cry silently.

Ana let out a breath, brushing her hair back and out of her eyes. She was pacing back and forth in the hospital hallway, trying to calm herself down. Fury was like a cranky uncle to her, he might've been strict but he always looked out for her, he was the first person who accepted Ana with the way she was. He taught her to embrace her power, not to fear it.

Natasha walked out of the room Fury's body was kept, quickly followed by Steve who called out her name. Ana frowned, about to go after them but then she heard Rumlow calling out her name behind her. She sighed, rolling her eyes.

"Ana!" Rumlow jogged down the hallway and stopped next to her.

"Not now, Brock. I don't care if I'm still assigned to your team, leave me out of it, whatever it is." Ana said.

"Hey, If you really want out, then you're out, no problem." He said softly, giving her a smile.

Ana looked up at him sceptically, "Really?"

"Really." He chuckled.

Ana shook her head, "Why'd you call me?" She asked.

"Um, well, I found this in the weaponry wing." Rumlow said, showing her one of the bands Peter made her. She frowned looking down at her wrists and only seeing one of them.

"Oh, I didn't really notice it missing." She said.

Brock nodded at her, "Yeah, I know, they're like feathers." He smiled weighing it in his hand, handing it to her. She placed it back around her wrist and nodded at him, "Thanks."

Ana rubbed her eyes, suddenly feeling tired. "If you don't mind, Rumlow, I'm gonna go and lie down." She said sleepy, starting to walk in the direction of the elevators. She didn't even book a place to stay at, so she'd have to bunk with either Nat or Steve.

Brock walked with her and he gave her a shrug, "Want me to drive you?" He offered. Ana gave him a look, "No thanks, I'm pretty sure I know my way around DC."

"Yeah, I don't know why I said that. See you tomorrow, I guess?"

"Sure."
