《Strange world》PPE - Part 1
Advertisement
In line on sidewalk, busy city street,
outside this not-too-fancy restaurant
A couple dozen people wait for takeout —
or for tables, few and far between, these distanced Covid days —
The would-be patrons stand there, calmly semi spaced,
a few, perhaps, over relaxed, a tad 'too close'
for current crushing protocols, but still compliant
cheerful-seeming, some chatting there
in rare sweet soft late winter sun
Some deep engaged, or faux engaged,
staring/glaring down into their tight-gripped screens
their so-beloved phones
Two, however, are differently engaged . . .
A giant curbside trash can, neat and clean,
Stands close at hand, more than waist high
With handsome domed protective top,
symmetric shapely gaps for throwing in
Appropriate, outside these take-away establishments
with their attendant, always so-abundant trash
But just now, currently, receptacle is not in play,
at least, not playing in intended mode
Despite the diners' many paper cups
and paper masks and cardboard plates
and sundry crackly wraps cascading forth
Today, here, on this restaurant row
A different restoration now, upon and over trash —
A man, gently hipstersque in knitted cloche and scarf
a sort of beardlike growth visible, though scant,
straggles a bit, looks soft, unsure wisps below grey fabric mask —
This man is there, is being hugged, fondled, and embraced
by fair-haired female, bouncy-bold in skinny jeans,
Big boots, t-shirt tight beneath her unzipped puffer vest
She's brazen, forcing him right out of line,
back, back against the tall trash can,
inch by insistent inch, 'til he's bent backward at the waist,
curved back receptive above receptacle's curved top

8 172ICOMO ODYSSEY
Jonathan Vélo never expected to be famous. Not for riding his bike all the way around the continent of Icomo. Every adult knows his story, and children learn about him at school. This, however, is the first and only biography written about that great man with foreigners in mind. We, his biographers, imagine they will be immensely grateful. Of course, readers will find the people of Icomo an unusual sort for glorifying a young man who did nothing more than quit his job and ride his bike from town to town, city to city… But in an age of robots and computers, when little escapes the notice of the historian, there is a quiet epic to be told. It is the epic of cozy nights in a tent below the stars, of warm wind and ocean waves. It is also the epic of missing old friends in faraway places, and that feeling of needing to make life mean something. *** ‘ICOMO ODYSSEY’ is a nostalgic slice-of-life adventure about a utopian sci-fi land. No clever villains or epic fights here. Just cozy pleasures, charming towns and villages, interesting cultures, and the people who live in them… This story will update bi-weekly on Friday and Saturday. https://www.scribblehub.com/series/467210/icomo-odyssey/

8 179Tesla Stone and the World of Smoke and Mirrors
R0Q-T357-Alpha (callsign: Rock) is a "Core Child," an irredeemably-crippled test tube baby modified and repurposed by an advanced U.S. military project to serve as the CPU for two-thirds of America's orbital defense systems. Though no one outside of the Pentagon has ever heard of him, he protected his homeland from three ICBMs, a Pacific theatre invasion fleet, and one rogue asteroid. Now, after twenty-seven years of distinguished service from "birth," he is being honorably discharged into civilian life. The only problem is that "civilian life" isn't exactly livable for a glorified brain in a jar. How does a couple pounds of grey matter surrounded by five tons of life support systems and enough co-processing enhancements to take over the planet enjoy an early retirement when he's surrounded by overzealous politicians, corporate spies, and foreign agents after military secrets? The real world isn't that forgiving.
