The inspiration came for this novel came from my absolute love of magic and all things supernatural. I had just finished reading Lev Grossman's series The Magicians and fell in love with the characters. I knew I wanted to write something with a lead like Quentin Coldwater

SO much! The hardest part was deciding just how much to reveal in this first book. You want to keep readers interested and turning pages, but you also want to leave some of the bigger mysteries for subsequent novels.
At this point, readers have been very kind and supportive. I had a lot of great advice during the first drafting phase that I have incorporated into the second draft. The book recently won first place in The Gem Awards in the mystery/thriller category--which was a really nice surprise.
I enjoy writing some of the Main Charater's inner dialogue as well as his interactions with his family. My favorite scenes are between him and his love interest. Their interest in each other is still very new and fresh at this point.
The Problem with Dying is the first book in The Practitioner's Series. Right now, I have my sights on completing a trilogy.
The biggest thing I hope people take away from this story is that inside each and every person is the propensity for greatness. It doesn't matter where you come from or what people think of you--if you have a good heart and a strong will, you can make things happen.
Read. Read books that you think you'll like. Read books that you think you won't. Read the classics, but also read something new. Readers make the best writers.

Torren and I both battle anxiety. I am much farther along in my journey than he is, but we are both nervous people.
This book has something for everyone--magic, vampires, college friendships, family stress, jealousy, and new love!
?
Yes! I will be writing Book Two of the Practitioner's Series (not yet titled), and I'm also drafting a new book about a girl who opens a door to a new world through a harp. It is a bit of a twist on Narnia--but with a French flair.

Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.

The Mermaid's Shoal
Elfyn O Se has lived by the laws of the sea his whole life. He'd go by Elf to his friends if he had any left, but at least his crew are willing to work with him, and it's not because he accidently cursed them all. Yet, maybe he can pull them together for one last job that might ease the fury of the tyrannical mermaid he wronged so long ago. He might have a chance to break the binds for himself and his crew, if he can pull it off. There's just one problem; a rival mermaid called Anwen. As mysterious as she is terrifying - and adamant that Elf can't win - she offers an alternative to break the curse if the crew can help her get home. The crew of the Ossory now finds themselves caught in an odyssey brimming with magic and monsters. Battling against champions of terrible adversaries, mysterious lights from the deep, and kleptomatic selkies who deal in blood, Elf is faced with a choice. Will he risk the future of his world to save his crews' souls, or condemn them all to protect the archipelago from certain calamity?
