Ghost Music: The Haunting of Sky Hollow

title: Ghost Music: The Haunting of Sky Hollow
The story was written for the Open Novella Contest II, but has since been expanded into a novel. The contest prompt had something to do with a haunting/portal, but I'd been toying with the idea of writing about a piece of haunted sculpture for a long time, and setting that story in my home state of Vermont. Both are things I hadn't come across anywhere else in my reading, and I wanted to do something original, something "more" than the standard haunted house story.

Beyond reaching the word count in the time allotted for the original contest, the things that posed challenges were keeping the creepiness going throughout—coming up with new ideas on how to scare readers—and then how to end the book. Originally, the ending was very different.
So far, the story's been very well received and has garnered numerous awards. What's really gratifying are reader comments that Nadia and Aidan "sound" like real siblings. Although I wish more people would read and comment, overall, it's been amazing!
Creating a unique location, developing the backstory, and judicious handling of a trigger topic were most definitely enjoyable aspects of writing this story.

It began as a stand-alone, then I tried to write a sequel. The first one I've ever tried (and maybe the last). Right now, 'Dead Reckoning,' the second installment, is on indefinite hiatus, due to major issues with consistency of atmosphere and plot.

title: The Idoron
Inspiration came from equal parts writer's block, an interest in Japanese culture (Aokigahara in particular), and a need to break out of my "Horror" comfort zone. Before this, I never dreamed of writing full-length Sci-Fi.
The novel is written in first-person POV, so the biggest challenge was how to keep readers invested in that for 85-90K words without every sentence beginning with "I, I, I..." Since it's also a journey/adventure with a time constraint, spicing that up with twists conflict relevant to the overall plot posed its share of obstacles, too.

Reader response has been slow but steady. It's kind of funny that while the story is set in futuristic Japan, to date, it hasn't had any Japanese readers.
Creating Renata's pint-sized, smart-mouthed character and her dystopian world were the most enjoyable parts of writing this novel. It forced me to learn a great deal about world building really fast, and I hope I achieved that. Plunging her from one situation into another was a blast.
Even though there are a few "plot doors" left ajar, The Idoron is a stand-alone... for now.

title: Dead of Winter
Contest prompts always help crystallize my ideas. In this case two from the ONC III, provided inspiration and helped develop the necessary framework for this novella.
I'd wanted to writer a horror story with a Wendigo in it. Devising a way to incorporate that in a way that was both believable and related to the prompts was probably the most challenging aspect of writing this novella.
Since the read count hasn't broken 900 yet, response has been disappointing.
Pitting characters who didn't believe in the paranormal against a mythological creature that's nigh-on impossible to kill was definitely the most enjoyable part about writing this story. Deciding whom to kill off, how and when was a close second.

While plans are underway for expanding it once the Wattys are over, Dead of Winter is a stand-alone story.

Ogre Tyrant
Tim wakes up to find he is naked and alone in a fantasy world. However, he is not as alone as he first thought. There are other people running around all over the place fighting monsters for a living. Unfortunately for Tim, he seems to be one of those monsters. Desperate for any degree of safety and normalcy he can find, Tim must tread a fine line between freedom and subservience to survive. All while trying to keep alive a trio of adventurers hellbent on becoming legends. However, unfortunately for Tim, he is not the only one from earth to awaken in this world and the other Awakened aren't nearly so benevolent. Warning: The protagonist begins the story quite cowed and meek but progresses into a more assertive and situationally dominant personality. This is partly due to growth, but also a result of the character overcoming initial shock and longstanding depression. If you think I could have handled a segment better, by all means, point it out and provide your reasoning and suggestion. Everyone's experience of depression is different, and Tim's is a close representation of my own, so it won't necessarily 'vibe' with everyone. Chapters are around 15k words and released approx 1/week over the weekend. Has been reduced to around 7.5k to 9k to better fit my schedule.[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

A World With or Without Aliens
Nothing matters. It's not my opinion, it's a scientific fact. This is neither good nor bad, it just... is. I watched my entire country burn, fried on a patriotic pan after some jerk fired a bunch of nukes at the docile fleet of alien ships hovering over us. Who gave this moron such power? I don't know. Everyone involved is most likely dead by now. As for me, I can't die. I feel pain like a normal person would (I think), but no matter how terrible the conditions, I will never die or pass out. Fortunately, a lot of alien technology survived its crash to Earth, so I get to spend some time playing with it until Mr. Author gets bored and decides to screw up my life. Beware, this has a "harem" tag. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm the main character and am therefore subject to this novel's timeline. While this bars me from the sweet ignorance of Chapter 1's me, it does have other perks... for example, I can tell you that heroine number one is personally responsible for kil-!? H-hey, back off! I'm your character, so if you didn't want me to be like this, then you should've written me differently! Randomguy here! In all seriousness, this novel is meant to explore the concept of nihilism as a post-apocalyptic/supernatural-scifi/satire told from a nihilistic introvert's first-person perspective. As you heard from my unsettled main character, each heroine is going to be a different type of horrifying socio/psychopath with dark motives and dangerous abilities (most of which are psychological). Why would I do something like this? Because I am, in reality, a nihilist who is often frustrated by weird things, like unrealistically dramatic stories, the industrialization of art (specifically music), and people who think swimming in brown creekwater for five hours is a "fun" activity. Don't get me wrong, neither me nor my character are depressed, we're just malcontents who make a lot of nerd references. I feel like the true essence of an "everything is worthless" perspective is lost on most pop-culture figures. The closest character I can think of at the moment is Rick from Rick and Morty, who is a drunk, angry nihilist that experienced tremendous loss. I, personally, find this belligerent state of mind to be very relatable, and have incorperated it into every chapter's introduction. Here, the main character talks directly to the reader (and me), shamelessly complaining about some semi-relevant facet of society, which probably doesn't make much sense... it's not really supposed to, though. These "angry nihilist" moments are just a peak into the main character's everyday existence, and also act as miniature rage-journals for me. It will sometimes take a subjectively 'positive' turn, but not very often. This is because reality isn't good or bad, "it just... is". I will eventually bring it full-circle to optimistic nihilism, since that seems to be a more practical way to live (and by "practical", I mean "doesn't create mental health issues"). It is, of course, a satire. I did this because most unnecessarily emotional moments or people usually make me feel kind of awkward, so I decided to mock them. That is, I plan to mock the characteristics about them I don't like in characters based solely off said characteristics. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my story!

The God Cheese Chase
“It was the race of the century. Millions upon millions of participants lined up at the thousand miles long starting line. The tension and excitement permeated the air like a thick miasma. Even I was affected. Who am I you say?Why I am the world’s greatest adventurer. I have slain demons and gods, conquered the hardest dungeons, scaled the tallest mountains, and braved even the hottest deserts. They call me the devourer of the hidden, discoverer of secrets, and the destroyer of the unknown. For my name is Charles Brie, the only man who shall win this race!”After my grand monolog, my crew looked at me with awe.“Captain,” My first mate sighed. “We truly pity you and your delusions of grandeur.”And with that, the race that would decide the fate of all began.
