《Broken-(A Loki Fanfic)》Chapter Twenty-Six

Thor had sent someone to clean up the mess. When they knocked at the door, I quickly hid the piece of glass in a drawer. I told them to wait a moment as I bandaged my arm.
"Come in," I said as I held my arm behind my back. A young woman came in with a broom. "I'm sorry. I can help if you want."
"Oh no," she said. "Do not worry about me. This is a minor mess compared to some of the feasts I have cleaned up after."
"Oh. Well, thank you. I didn't mean to make the mess. It just happened."
"It's alright, miss. I understand."
"You... you do?"
"Yes, I too have lost a loved one," she said as she swept.
"I... How did you know about that?"
"Oh," she stiffened. "Well, I actually saw you the day you two escaped. I didn't say anything since you were being escorted by Thor. But I saw the way you looked at each other. He held you in his arms and looked at you like you were the world. And I'm willing to bet that you were to him." Her words surrounded me, giving me a warm feeling inside. "I'm sorry, I should not have pried. Have a good day miss." She began to leave but I stopped her by grabbing her shoulder. "Is something wrong?"
"No. I just... thank you. It means a lot, what you said."
"Anytime, miss." She smiled before turning away. She carefully shut the door behind her.

Thor had invited me to join them at dinner that night. I didn't want to be rude, but I also didn't want to be around people. I had been in a dark mood since earlier that day but I desperately needed some food.

I wore the same dark outfit as before, but I didn't bother to put on any makeup. I just felt so exhausted.
As I walked out, I felt out of place. All of these people were happy and bright. I knew I stood out. I could feel the dark aura I had but I went anyways.
I entered the dining hall, quickly spotting Thor and his friends.
"Lady Lilith!" Thor exclaimed. "Please, have a seat." He pulled out the chair next to him so I sat down. "Thank you for joining us."
"Hello, Lady Lilith," Sif said from his other side. "It's nice to see you again."
"You, too," I said quietly.
"So, you are the Lady Lilith!" a booming voice from a few seats down said. I turned to see a larger man devouring his meal smiling at me. "I am Volstagg. Nice to meet you!" I smiled and nodded respectfully but didn't say anything. He didn't seem to care since he continued his meal.
"I am Hogan," another man said. He was seated beside Sif. "It is a pleasure."
"Um, it's nice to meet you too," I said nervously.
"And I," a sly voice said from behind me, "do believe we met once before." I turned around to see none other than Fandral. "It is an honor to truly meet you." He grabbed my scarred hand and brought it to his lips. I fought the urge to smack him. He clearly didn't remember my threat.
He pulled up a chair beside me. I caught Sif rolling her eyes.
"I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of courting a woman who prefers such loose clothing." Clearly, all the women here had on tighter dresses and not men's clothes. Sif had armor, but she was she only one.

"Well," I began. "I wouldn't get your hopes up."
"Is that so?" he questioned.
"Yeah, it is." I shifted in my seat. I tried to face away from him.
Thor passed me a plate with all sorts of food on it. I began to pick at it, realizing I never had the chance to rebuild my appetite.
"So, what can I so that will make you change your mind?" Fandral asked.
"Nothing," I said, not making eye contact.
"Nothing? Surely a woman like you could—"
"Fandral," Sif interrupted. "Enough."
"What? I'm just saying that she could loosen up a bit, that's all."
"Stop," Sif demanded. "She's been through a lot."
"And I'm offering her comfort." I shot my eyes up and met his gaze.
"Oh, is that it?" I scoffed. "No, you weren't offering me comfort. You were offering me to be your interest for tonight until you decide that you don't like me anymore and jump over to the next woman who has the misfortune of meeting you. You could not begin to understand what I have been through. You are playing a dangerous game that I do not think you wish to finish. So are we done here?" He stared at me with wide eyes. Everyone at the table was doing the same. Except for Sif. She was smiling proudly.
"I... I do apologize my lady. I shall not bother you any more." I slumped back in my seat and continued to pick at my food. Fandral hardly said a word to me for the rest of the night.
The feast was coming to an end and people began to slowly file out of the large hall. Everyone else was finished eating, but I still had a majority of mine left. I didn't plan on finishing it, but I didn't exactly want them to notice.
I began to leave the table but was stopped. "Leaving so soon?" Thor asked.
"Oh, um, yeah. I'm pretty tired," I told him. He nodded understandingly but Sif gave me a strange look.
"You hardly touched your food. Are you well?" she asked me.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm... I'm just going to go now," I replied awkwardly. I rushed away and glanced back. I saw Sif excuse herself from the table and begin walking towards me. I knew she meant well, but I didn't want to talk right now.
I sped up my pace and rushed back to Loki's room. I quickly locked the door behind me. I let out a deep breath before crashing on the bed. "I'd rather be alone if I'm without you," I said looking up at the ceiling.
"Lady Lilith, are you in there?" Sif asked from outside. "I only wish to speak to you." I felt guilty but I said nothing. "I know you are in there. But I also understand that you might not be ready to talk. When you are, I will be here for you. Just come find me. Alright?" I stayed silent. "Goodbye, Lady Lilith."
I heard her walk away as I crawled into the covers. I just wanted to be alone, away from everyone. I felt empty inside. A hole had been dug and it could never be filled. I just wanted to rot away in peace rather than drag everyone down with me.

Follow a collection of chance encounters turned potential allies as numerous forces work to tear through the fabric of reality. Viamarr, a continent in the world of Rinterria, holds host to our tale and to the city of High Morr, which sits snugly on its frozen island in the middle of a great frostbitten lagoon. When High Morr is suddenly crippled by a series of mysterious sinkholes, our heroes do what they do best. Try to run. Keep up with them to find out where they end up and what exactly is chasing them in return. I hope to publish a new chapter 3 times a week. This is reduced from my previous number, hopefully temporarily, due to an increased workload outside of Royal Road. I welcome any and all feedback to improve my writing, so thank you for taking the time to check out my page.
8 219In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.
