《Maid for a Duke (A Christmas Novella)》Chapter 12

Elijah paced back-and-forth outside of the pub while he waited for William. After the lunch with Lady Elizabeth and her father was finally over, he made his way here. He needed William to help him find Katherine. He was never surer of anything in his life. He wanted to take her, run away with her, and live his life how he wanted. He wanted to be happy.

The supposed wedding was 4 days away, and he needed to act quickly. If there was any chance of finding her, it would take him at least two days. Then he would have to verify that she feels the same way he does. Even if she did, he had no idea if she would agree to run away with him. She had a mother and sisters back home. Was it selfish of him to ask her? Was it selfish of him to leave his own family behind?

"Elijah!" William called as he started walking up to Elijah. He had a concerned expression on his face. "Please tell me you are not going to run off again. The last time we met at this Pub, you took my clothes."

"I don't need your clothes. I need your help."

William crossed his arms over his chest. "The last time you said that we got caught drinking your father's whiskey when we were kids."

Elijah rubbed at his temples as a headache started to form. If William cap this up oh, they were going to get nowhere. "William, this is serious. I need to know if you happen to get the name of the driver who drove Katherine."

William frowned and dropped his arms. "Why? Is she alright?"

"She's fine. I need you to try and locate her. There are things I need to tell her. In person."

He could tell by Williams expression that he knew exactly what Elijah was implying. Instead of asking the question he already knew the answer to, William simply asked, "Do you have any information about her?"

Elijah let out a long breath before he answered. Unfortunately, the only information I know is her first name. I know that she is from a small town, she used to live with her mother and two sisters. She has curly red hair and likes to read. Also, she's a maid. Fairly new to the job."

"That's all? Elijah, I'm willing to help you, against my better judgment, but I need more information. It's going to be really hard to find her if I don't know more."

Elijah knew that he would say that. But he was desperate. "William, that's all I have. Please, just try to find her. Also, we are having dinner tonight with Lady Elizabeth and her father. I want you to be there."

William looked at Elijah like he was crazy. "That's a terrible idea! What if we get found out? What if Lady Elizabeth realizes that I was you?"

"She won't. She thinks you were me. Now, I need you there. Don't be late."

Elijah started walking away before he stopped and turned towards William. "Will? Please, do everything you can."

William got back to the Kent estate in a foul mood. He did not have good news for Elijah. He asked as many people in town as he could if they knew of a maid named Catherine. No one was able to give him any answers.

As soon as he got inside, he saw Elijah in the drawing room. Elijah immediately got to his feet and motion for William to follow him. They stayed quiet until they got inside Elijah's quarters and shut the doors.

"Well?" Elijah asked impatiently.

"I'm sorry. No one has heard of a maid named Katherine. Elijah, are you sure she gave you the right information?"

Elijah looked at him with hard eyes. "Are you suggesting that she lied to me, William? She wouldn't do that."

William tried to keep his voice level to not upset Elijah. "Elijah, you have only known her for two days, Now you're in love with her? Seems a little hasty."

As soon as the words were out of his mouth, William regretted it. Elijah crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow at him. "And what about you, William? You spent one evening with my betrothed and now you are in love yourself. Aren't you? That also seems rather hasty."

William couldn't deny Elijah's claims. He hasn't been able to think about anything else since the few hours he had spent with Lady Elizabeth. William let out a defeated sigh before he asked, "What do you want to do?"

William waited patiently as Elijah ran his hands through his hair. He knew his friend was frustrated and he couldn't blame him. He was also a little relieved that he couldn't find Katherine. Not because he didn't want Elijah happy, but because he knew that meant Elijah would have a choice to make. Either marry Lady Elizabeth or run away with Katherine. William didn't want to think about seeing Lady Elizabeth married to his best friend either. It was just bad all around.

Elijah finally turned towards him. "We are running late for dinner. Let's go."

William followed Elijah downstairs to the dining room. This will be the first time William is seeing Lady Elizabeth since the night they spent on the terrace. He was nervous about being around her again. He was worried about saying something that might expose the fact that Elijah wasn't there that night.

When they walked into the dining room, Williams eyes immediately found Lady Elizabeth. She was wearing a dark red evening gown and her long blonde hair was braided tonight.

Elijah first introduced William to her father, Lord Coleman, who seemed like a nice man. When William turned to Lady Elizabeth and smiled, she had an odd expression as she looked back and forth between the two men.

"This is your friend?" She asked Elijah suspiciously.

"Yes, this is William. He's one of my oldest friends."

"It's nice to meet you, William," she said as she held out her hand.

"The pleasure is mine, Lady Elizabeth." William's heart was pounding in his chest as he kissed the top of her hand.

When he looked up at her with a smile, she cocked her head to the side. She knows, William thought.

"Now that we've all been introduced, let's sit down for dinner," the Duchess said.

Everyone took their seats and William cursed under his breath when Lady Elizabeth sat across from him.

This is going to be a long dinner, William thought.

Katherine was already exhausted. The Duke and Duchess decided to have a dinner party and they had to make sure everything was ready for Lady Elizabeth and her father.

Katherine was enjoying being a maid. She felt like she had a purpose. It also helped to keep her busy. When she was busy, she didn't get lost in her thoughts. It was only in her quiet moments that she found her mind drifting towards Elijah. There were a few moments where she lost all sense of reason and wanted to go run out in search of him. But she had no idea where to look. She had no idea how to go about it. Besides, she had enough going on with her new job.

"Katherine!" Annalise called from across the kitchen. "Can you please take these desserts out to the table, please?"

She froze as her anxiety started to get the best of her. She wasn't expecting to leave the kitchen tonight. But she also didn't want to mess this up. "Yes, of course."

Katherine grabbed the serving tray and headed out to the dining room. She didn't pay attention to the conversations of the table as she sat the dessert tray between the Duke and Duchess.

When she turned to go back to the kitchen, she paused. Sitting in front of her...was Elijah. As if sensing her eyes on him, he glanced up and his eyes met hers. They stayed like that for what felt like several moments.

Unable to think of anything else to do or say, she fled to the kitchen. She walked over to the corner and tried to keep herself from hyperventilating. Elijah is the duke. The Duke of Kent. "Oh, God..." she said to herself. How could this be? He never...

"Miss?" A familiar voice whispered.

Katherine looked over and it was William. He handed her a note before giving her a smile. She waited until he left the kitchen before she opened it.

What she read surprised her:

Katherine, please come to my quarters after dinner. We have much to discuss.

Yours,

Elijah
