Rebekah, Raven and Klaus enter the party, Raven between the two siblings an arm linked with each sibling, taking in the dark, wild atmosphere. Klaus is wearing a black suit with a black dress shirt and tie, and Rebekah is dressed in a matching black peplum cocktail dress and a hairpiece with black feathers and beads. Raven had gone a bit simpler with a deep burgundy dress, some gold jewellery and no headpieces. Acrobats perform, dancers handle exotic animals, and confetti falls glittering upon the party guests.
"Well, this certainly is a fitting backdrop for tonight's events, I must say," Klaus says.
"This just screams rich people," Raven says, looking around.
Rebekah, Raven and Klaus spot Cami as she enters the party, wearing white angel's wings and a vintage white beaded dress. Rebekah looks pleased, but Klaus' smile falls.
"What's she doing here?" Klaus asks.
"What better way to distract Marcel than to put his very human new girl in a room chock full of vampires?"
Klaus seems very unhappy with this decision on Rebekah's part as she crosses the courtyard to greet Cami. Klaus sighs and follows behind her, pulling Raven gently away from the snake handler.
"Hello, darling. You look precious" Rebekah says.
"This party is ridiculous, but I think I went a bit splashy with this dress," Cami says.
Cami makes eye contact with Klaus and nods at him in acknowledgement as he joins them before she before turning back to Rebekah.
"Is one of those the infamous on-again/off-again?"
"I'm the brother, actually, and my sister is right. You do look stunning" Klaus says. "And this is the lovely Raven, my date for the night"
"You clean up pretty well yourself," Cami says.
"Well, don't be fooled, love. I'm the devil in disguise" Klaus says.

"You three chit-chat. I need booze"
Rebekah heads to the bar, leaving Klaus, Raven and Cami stood awkwardly.
"Shall we?" Klaus asks.
"Okay"
Klaus offers her his free arm and Cami takes it.
Across the courtyard, Cami, Raven and Klaus stand talking while Cami subtly watches Rebekah with Marcel at the bar. Oozing jealousy.
"The guy of hers Rebekah was talking about I'm sensing that would be Marcel," Cami says.
"I wouldn't worry about it. Ancient history" Klaus waves a dismissive hand as if to prove his point.
"I'm beginning to think your sister is a bit of a bitch" Cami says and Raven frowns slightly, having grown to like Rebekah and not liking how Cami was looking at Klaus.
Klaus laughs heartily
"It's as though she invented the term!"
"I don't think she's that bad" Raven says. "Maybe she just doesn't like you"
Cami seems caught off guard by Raven's harsh tone. But fortunately for Cami, Klaus spots Marcel heading their way and decides to leave.
"Listen. Pardon me for a moment"
Klaus and Raven leave.
"Do you dance?" Klaus asks.
"If asked properly"
"Raven, will you dance with me?"
"Why not?"
Raven accepts Klaus' hand and he leads her to the dance floor.
"I'm sorry about your mother"
"It was a long time ago"
"Rebekah really is a hideously evil little thing, isn't she?" Klaus asks as they spot Cami and Marcel dancing together.
"Nonsense. They're perfect for each other! You wanted Marcel distracted? Voilà. Rebekah just had the initiative" Raven says. "She's smarter than you give her credit for"
"I have no doubt about that" Klaus says. "She's just fiendish in her ways"
Diego enters the courtyard and sees Marcel dancing with Cami, their faces nearly touching each other. Diego looks anxious as he interrupts them and whispers in Marcel's ear.

"I'm taking that this is your part of the plan?" Raven asks as Klaus spins her.
"However did you guess?"
Diego seems to have explained to Marcel what Thierry did, because Marcel spots Thierry standing anxiously nearby and can barely contain his anger at the sight of him.
Marcel walks over to Thierry and grabs him by the throat, pushing him away from the main party. Cami watches in concern from the dance floor.
Diego sees Cami watching from below and intervenes in their confrontation. Marcel sighs deeply and backs off. Klaus, who is watching the drama unfold, looks pleased, but Cami looks unsettled by this display of aggression and Raven watches the whole situation with no emotion.
"And it begins" Klaus whispers as Marcel sentences Thierry to a century in a garden.
"What's the garden?"
"Marcel buries vampires there and leaves them to desiccate for their sentence" Klaus says.
"Wouldn't that be-"
"Excruciating, yes"
Klaus stands with Raven and watches as more of Marcel's men lead Thierry out of the party and out onto the street, where a small crowd of more vampires watch Katie approach as she chants loudly. Klaus and Raven watch the events unfold from the window above.
"Donn moi se la vroh kondu feh aila ra donn toi moi. Donn moi. Salacku tusdeh do. Vala"
"Katie, no!" Thierry shouts.
"Like clockwork" Klaus says.
Katie waves her arm and a lamp's light explodes; all the vampires grab at their heads, falling down in pain. Marcel alone rises back up to face Katie, but she smashes another light with magic and Marcel goes down again.
Marcel rises again, but Katie uses magic to break his bones, and he falls again shouting in pain. But he rises again, leaving Katie shocked.
"You're here to save your man. Well, come on, little girl!" Marcel shouts.
He growls as he runs to attack Katie, but she halts him with magic, and he groans as he falls to his knees. In the street, Katie lifts a wooden stake above Marcel's head.
"Die, you son of a bitch"
"No! Katie! Don't!"
Before Katie can kill Marcel, the stake catches fire as Raven's eyes glow orange. Klaus swoops in and snaps Katie's neck. She dies as Klaus drops her body carelessly to the ground.
Back on the street, Thierry crawls over to Katie's body as Raven stamps on the burning stake to put it out.
"No. Katie. No, no, no, no"
He cradles her body and sobs over her. Marcel catches Klaus' eye and nods in appreciation.
"Thank you"
Raven turns to see Marcel and she nods.
"Not really a fan of witches" Raven says to Marcel. "My cousin was a witch and then she was picked for the harvest or something and then poof, she disappeared"
"What was her name?"
"Davina, Davina Claire"

An Unwavering Craftsman
Given the hereditary nature of classes, everyone expects Damien—the child of two high-tiered adventurers—to be granted a high-tier combat class of his own. Expectations are betrayed, however, when Damien finds himself instead saddled with a crafting class of the lowest possible tier: [Neophyte Tailor]. Left practically crippled compared to those with better classes, Damien wants to avoid becoming a pawn in the machinations of the nobility, desiring only to grind his level in peace while wondering why the usual rules of inheritance were broken. Was it his desire to excel by his own effort, rather than an unearned blessing from a god? Did the Five take offence at his opinions on the unfairness of hereditary classes? Or maybe it was something to do with the alien voice that intruded on his ceremony? A voice that offers great power, and freedom from the tyranny of the Five, but that never names its price. This story is litRPG-lite. While the class someone possesses controls most of their lives, people don't get dinged at for every level they gain, nor can they see their status without undergoing a special ritual. The MC has no romantic interest. Crafting is merely a way to game the system, and doesn't feature heavily in the story, aside from a few descriptions on how they're carrying out the system abuse. There is, on one unfortunate occasion, maths. The pace is quick. This was a participant in the Spring 2022 writathon. (i.e. it was posted as-written at high speed. I may give it another editing pass in the future.)
