《Klepto✔︎》33 ❀ Red lens

Ezra POV
The sheer terror and fury that courses through my veins is more powerful than anything I've ever felt in my whole useless existence.
I'm shifted, though I don't remember doing that, and I'm killing like I've never killed before.
Blood is everywhere, it is everything, splattering any surface in sight with a crimson sheen, or maybe that's just me seeing through a red lens, I wouldn't be surprised.
My teeth ache, my vision blurs as I take care of the rogues, ending lives left and right without mercy, without a pause.
I need them dead, every last one of them.
I just bulldoze the pathetic wolves to nothing without even trying.
When Klepto fell to the ground, I couldn't think, my body shook and my instincts took over.
I guess that's when I shifted, roaring my pain at the sight of my injured mate laying in the snow.
Even now, I don't know if she lives or if she's gone.
My brain works on automatic, clearing the woods of life, and before I know it I, run out of rogues to destroy and the only sound is of my panting.
I growl low in my throat, rumbling like a motorboat as I go to stand over my mate.
My head isn't screwed on straight, I can't think clear long enough to focus on shifting back down so I can check if she's alright.
I bend closer to her, looking down between my paws where my mate lays motionless, her body so small in comparison to my enormous size.
The only emotion I can conjure up is anger and an overwhelming sense of fear that makes it hard to breathe.
The idea of losing Klepto makes me get dizzy all of the sudden, and I have to squeeze my eyes shut.
A noise draws my attention to the left, and before I can even see who it is I snap, snarling viciously and charging.

I have to protect her, I have the protect my mate.
"What the hell?" I let out a furious growl as I stare down at Reid, my paws digging into the snow covered ground, stepping over the countless corpses littering the forest floor.
"Ezra, what happened?!" My answer is a snarl.
This lycan is a threat to my mate. If he gets any closer, I'll end him here and now.
The idea of him being within reaching distance of Klepto makes me fill to the brim with wrath.
He's dangerous, he could hurt her.
I thunder a growl, baring my teeth and lowering myself closer to the ground. I will not let him get past me.
My lack of vigilance is what got her injured in the first place, and I'll be damned if it happens again.
Reid's gaze flickers back and forth from rogue to rogue, pupils dilating at the massacre I had caused. The criticism is there, horror and realization dawning on his face.
He spots Klepto and I roar at him. His head flicks up to me, blond eyebrows raising in alarm. Reid's hands go up, palms out as he backs away.
"Ezra, you're not in your right mind, okay? She needs medical attention." I picture him touching her and I lick my teeth, "Calm down, I won't hurt her."
I didn't trust him. I can't afford to trust him no matter our history together.
My mate's life is at stake, and that is all that matters.
When neither of us move, I take a threatening step forward, glaring down at him as if to tell him to back down.
My patience is dwindling, and if Reid sticks around any longer, I might snap.
He looks nervous when I get closer, desperation floating in his gaze.
"I'm trying to help! If you don't get her to the pack doctor soon, she'll die dammit. Do you want to lose her?"

His words break my stupor, I stagger back, my head clearing at the thought.
I can't lose her, not again.
I let him pass, and he rushes to her side. I quickly shift back to my two legged form, trying to regain my balance against a tree as I sway.
When I try to walk I feel like a newborn giraffe, my legs too long and awkward to function properly.
I want to be with my mate, but I am too dizzy to see straight.
The amount of death around me makes my stomach lurch, I've killed so many wolves that the surrounding snow is more red than white, bodies strewn everywhere.
The whole ordeal remains a blur in the back of my head.
"Get over here!" He demands.
Reid is kneeling by Klepto, putting pressure on the wound.
I push myself off of the tree, barely able to hobble over to my injured mate. Collapsing on my knees, I stare down at her wound, blood pouring out in heaps.
She's dying. She's actually dying. Oh dear Moon Goddess, what have I done?
It all seems to feel real now, and I realize that this is actually happening. Klepto could leave this earth and I would never see her again.
A broken sob leaves me. Reid gives me a shocked expression.
"This is all my fault, sweetie." I say, brushing my knuckles to her cheekbone, "You saved me. Why did you save me?"
"I don't know, maybe because you're her mate, and despite every horrible thing you've done, she still cares about you?" He guesses, and I reel back when he pulls the knife out of her, the skin bubbling where the silver was once imbedded deep in her flesh.
"Whoever stabbed her missed her heart, you're lucky. It might of hit her lung, and if that's the case we need to bring her back pronto." He whispers, and I nod my head.
It is then that I notice, through my tear filled eyes, that Klepto is naked. She's covered in goosebumps, and her full, pale breasts are bare for anyone to see.
I let out a growl.
"Look away." I insist, and Reid shoots me a confused look before recognizing what exactly I'm talking about.
"Yeah, I'm going to ogle a helpless naked woman bleeding to death." He spits sarcastically, punching me in the shoulder, "I'm glad you think so highly of me."
"Whatever. Just get something to cover her with, it's too cold for her to be like this." I would provide clothing for her, but seeing as how I am also as naked as the day I was born, that definitely isn't possible.
In one swift motion Reid takes off his shirt and lays it across her chest to cover her up from the chill and the praying eyes of any wolves who might be around when we re-enter the pack.
"Thank you... for everything." I say to Reid after I haul my mate into my arms, the warm tears in my eyes finally falling down my cheeks.
He nods silently, and we finally make our way quickly back to the pack, a heart full of hope that everything will be alright.

BODY&SHADOW
AN ILLUSTRATED NOVEL • UPDATES TUESDAY AND FRIDAY In a time before living memory, the King Dragon of the Void watched the world and realized there was a crack. He realized that humanity was destroying the rock upon which they lived; they leaked life’s code into the churning chaos. At first the change was imperceptible: nanites overtook microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, amoebas. Insects became increasingly inorganic; birds and lizards followed soon after. Even humans were infected by their own advances, cell by cell, till there was not a person left on earth who wasn’t at least part synthetic, the product of a prior generation’s carelessness. The world’s population was ravaged by mechanical viruses with no vaccines; they were mercilessly overtaken by bacteria that knew no death. Soon, most of the planet was empty and only a handful remained who remembered the hedonist realm they came from; only a few were left who remembered what the world looked like when their buildings touched the sky. The King Dragon of the Void watched the rock turn. He watched humans cower as the Old World fell down around them; watched their great monuments crumble into dusty ruins; watched their codes become precious, ancient gem memories forged under the crushing pressure of so many fallen stones. The world has spun many times around the sun since chaos swallowed man whole. It is a simpler time than the one that died out, but the people now are not immune to the folly of the people before. There is old code everywhere: in the water, in the air, in the trees. The heart of man has been replaced by power cores, many of which are hard-coded with preternatural abilities—when they die, an esoteric mountain sect collects their cores and stores them in their hollow mountain home to preserve the sanctity and dignity of human death. They’ve learned to harness artifacts of the old world, gemstones full of codes their nanite infused bodies can parse as spells imbuing their users with great power; they inlay them into their bodies, into their skins, connected to their cores by copper conduit and gold tracers; they dress themselves in tattoos to advertise their prowess; they battle for relics in arenas, fight for them in the open world wherever they are found. The King Dragon of the Void watches the rock turn and wonders: when will this hunger finally make the rock stop spinning? WELCOME TO FANXING CITY … Twenty-five years ago, Fanxing City and the surrounding lands were commanded by the mad King Zao Beiguan. For many years, the King hoarded wealth, artifacts, food; he demanded tribute from a people already taxed to the edges of their existence and expected they be happy with their circumstances. Noncompliance was often punished harshly, bodies displayed proudly on Fanxing’s streets as a warning, from the city gates to the Zao palace’s golden doors. The youths of several prominent clans came together to overthrow the tyrant and made names for themselves as legendary heroes across the land: Tian, Ren, Feng, Gui, Ma, and Zhenxi. Even wanderers from the Luanshi sect descended from Yunji mountain to aid the rebellion. When the dust settled after three years, Tian Yunyong ascended the throne of Fanxing and swore to honour his slain father’s memory, and has maintained Fanxing’s peace with generosity and mercy where fear and cruelty once reigned.
