《The Bookworm {Jasper X Reader}》The Tension
Advertisement
The following week was pretty... awkward. Not that you started avoiding each other, but obviously, something changed in your friendship. Not that you stopped talking altogether, you still normally did stuff together, but there was now this... well... tension. Mainly from your side.
Neither of you brought up the thing that happened that day... you two cuddling in her sitting sack, basically a bed if you wanted to think into it too much, then falling asleep in each other's embrance...
Not that you would complain! Not at all, you really enjoyed it. Now, you've obviously never told anybody, but you like Jasper. A lot. Everything about her seemed so perfect to you... maybe except her sense of humour, which was a tad too dark for your taste, but other than that, she was like an angel that came crashing down from the heavens. Quite literally from what you've heard.
But here's the problem:
Does she like you back?
You were haunted by this question from the day you admitted you liked her to yourself. Does she like me as a friend, or as someting more? Or does she even like me at all? Probably yes, but still...
'Ugh, why am I thinking like this again?!?' you thought to yourself, as you were making yourself breakfast, exactly a week after your little reading session.
'Of course she doesn't like me the way I like her...' you frowned, more in a sad, hurtful way than the angry one, while you were smearing butter on a toast. 'Besides, she is a thousands years old Gem, I am a mere human, these types of relationships don't usually end well-'
"Good morning (y/n)."
You jumped a bit when you heard her raspy voice behind you, the knife coated in butter almost falling out of your hands.

"O-oh, hi Jasper!" you quickly responded, managing to sound more startled than you should be as you glanced at her, hoping she wouldn't notice how little sleep you've got. You couldn't stop thinking about her all night, the corncerns about your possible relationship and all the dangers it could bring to you two were enough to keep your eyes wide open.
"Is something wrong, (y/n)?" she asked, cocking her head to the side. She looked genuinely concerned about you. Well, who wouldn't be, the dark circles under your eyes were more than apparent.
"No, nothing, I just... couldn't sleep." you responded with a light smile. You knew it wasn't a lie, but you still hoped she won't question you further.
"Oh, I see... does it happen often to humans?"
You nodded and sighed. "Yes. Well, I mean, I don't know about others, but it does happen often to me."
She nodded too and sat down on the ground next to the table. She didn't have a chair of her own, because the table was quite short and she wouldn't be able to reach it comfortably. Instead, she had a pillow to sit on.
You grabbed the food you made and sat opposite to her, as you always did. You put the toasts in the middle of the table, and you both started eating
The two of you were watching TV when you heard a knock on the door. You sighed and stood up, calling out a quicky "I'm coming!" as you walked towards the door.
When you opened it, you weren't surprised to see the curly-haired smiling boy.
"Oh, hey Steven! What are you going to do today?" you asked with a smile, leaning on the doorframe.
"The others are going on a mission again... well, not so much of a mission, more like a rescue..."

You frowned a little bit. "What happened?"
"Lapis and Peridot's barn was attacked by two corrupted gems, so they set off to help them. I thought you two might want to tag along!"
"A fight? Sure I'll tag along! It was too long since I kicked some butt!" you heard Jasper exclaim next to you. "And I'm sure (y/n) will come too, from what I've seen, she's a really good fighter!" she said as she gave you a wide grin.
You sighed and smiled "Okay, I'll help... just let me grab my sword!" you said as you turned around, running up the stairs.
From the time you were Steven's friend you trained with Pearl and Connie. You figured it will be better if you knew how to defend yourseld when you got yourself involved with gem stuff.
You took your sword from your closet and ran back down. You used an one-handed sword, sometimes even using two at a time. It was convenient, as Connie used a two-handed one.
You stood next to Jasper again and smiled.
"Ready!"
"Alright, let's show the monster what we're capable of!" Jasper grinned, cracking her knuckles.

Sorry, this chapter is so short, but I needed to set the situation up. The next two chapters will be a lot better, trust me. All I can say is that lot of shit will go down ;)

Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
