Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds Of Summer had been born with a heart defect. He had a hole in his heart. This was called 'Congenital Heart Disease'. The lads, his bandmates, knew about this defect. They always made sure to get Luke to take his medication that lowered his blood pressure and controlled his heart rate. They made sure to check after every show to see if he felt light headed at all, if he did they'd take him to a doctor to get him checked out.

For the previous 20 years of his life, Luke had lived with this hole. He'd always taken his medication, he couldn't remember a time that he hadn't. He knew that eventually he would need to do something about the hole in his heart, he couldn't live taking pills and sitting down any time he felt light headed every single day. He knew he'd have to have surgery, but he didn't think it would be very soon.

The band was in Sydney with their families. They had parted ways in the airport and headed back to their houses. Luke was happy to be home with his mum, his dad and his irritating, but awesome, older brothers, Ben and Jack. His family was happy to have him home too, they had missed him. Although Liz was afraid of something, something she had to tell her youngest son.

"Lukey, can you come down to the kitchen please?" She called up the stairs to Luke, who had been playing around on his guitar.

"Coming mum!" Luke yelled as he ran down the stairs, interested in what his mum wanted him for. "What is it?"

"Luke, you know how you have a heart defect?" Liz asked softly. Luke nodded in understanding. "Well, you are due for the surgery to have it fixed."

"Oh." Luke mumbled. He wasn't exactly shocked to hear the news, but it was a bit abrupt. "When?"

"It'd be best if we booked you in for next week. So you have time to prepare and time to recover before tour." Liz explained.

"Okay."

"I'll book you in for the Tuesday?" Liz asked.

"Yeah."

The next Tuesday, Luke was in a hospital bed, waiting to go in for his surgery. The lads were there as well as his family. They were all wishing him luck as the anaesthetist injusted the anaesthesia into him. Before Luke could count to 20, he was out. He was wheeled into the operating room, his friends and family asked to wait in the room. After a grueling 4 hour wait, Luke was wheeled back into his room.

"The surgery was a success. We were able to close the hole." The doctor announced. Everyone thanked him.
