《Fated (A Chris Evans Series)》Back to Her

The line cut off and the dial tone droned; Chris stood there stunned with the phone still pressed to his ear. He couldn't process what had just happened, it was bewildering how quickly everything had taken a turn for the worst. His hand dropped to his side in defeat as his thumb locked the phone. He looked around his vicinity. He watched the strangers on the street, looking for someone- a sign, something, anything- to tell him he was dreaming, that the love of his life didn't just break up with him. She didn't break up with him, she couldn't have. They had a life to live out together- there was a plan to follow, a destiny to fulfill...This was never part of that plan, he wasn't meant to lose her. What had he done? Why did he call? Why did he say what he didn't mean? There were a million questions he wanted an answer to, but the most prominent one begging for an immediate answer was "can I get her back?"

"Taxi!" Chris called as he held out an arm. He knew what was at stake if he'd left without saying a word and wasn't back before his next scene, but his job didn't matter if he didn't have her; she was his non-negotiable. "Hey, taxi!" He yelled again, catching the attention of a passing cabbie who sensed his urgency and pulled up in front of him.

"Chris!" Sebastian caught Chris getting into a cab as he came out of the bar the rest of the cast and crew were in. "Chris!" He called and jogged a few steps, trying to stop the cab that was pulling away from the curb. "Chris, wait!" He yelled and waved into the rear view mirror, but the cab was already on its way to the airport. "Where the hell are you going, man? You've still got my phone."

Sebastian's pocket buzzed, reminding him that he still had Chris' phone. He pulled it out and frowned when he saw what Chris had texted through his phone: "Denise broke up with me. I need to go sort things out, I'll get your phone back to you later." Sebastian sighed, wishing he'd known better than to give Chris access to a phone with a number Denise didn't recognize. "I don't care about my phone, just fix your relationship before it's too late." He'd wanted to text that back, but he didn't knowing Chris was going through enough. He slipped Chris' phone back into his pocket and returned to the bar to explain the situation to the executive producer.

Chris dialed Denise's number then hovered his thumb over the call button. If he called her now- even without his number- she was going to ignore his call; she was going to ignore all calls. He needed to see her in person, he needed to deal with this whole situation in person. He turned off Sebastian's phone to rid himself of the temptation and focused on what he was going to say to her when he got back to Los Angeles.

Sebastian's pocket starting buzzing again before he could re-enter the bar. He narrowed his eyes as he pulled out Chris' phone; the name 'Luca' popped up on the screen. He knew who Luca was as she'd been mentioned a few times by both Chris and Denise, but he didn't feel comfortable answering her call when it wasn't his phone. He stared at it momentarily, then decided it was best if he answered, perhaps he could inform Luca that Chris was on his way to Los Angeles and get her to pass the message onto Denise. It would've been a waste if things ended here, Chris and Denise were perfect together; even the blind could see that.

"Chris!" Luca started rambling the second Sebastian picked up. "Oh my God, what just happened?" She asked and Sebastian wished he knew. "Denise just left for work, but I'm pretty sure she's crying in the stairwell. Are you okay?" Sebastian tried to talk, but Luca continued before he could. "Of course not because she's not either. I hope you know you're not actually broken up, so don't go hook up with a stranger just to spite her because that will actually end the relationship. Are you even there? Can you please say-"

"Not Chris," Sebastian cut Luca off. Her breathing ceased when she recognized his voice, unsure if she should hang up or continue talking. "He borrowed my phone and left his with me. He's headed for the airport now to go back to LA to talk to Denise, so I think we can relax."

Luca had no words, she was starstruck. Sebastian Stan was the celebrity she held in the same high regard Denise held Chris. He was the only major celebrity crush she'd had in her life, which began long before he became a Marvel superstar. It bewildered her knowing this was the first time she'd actually associated Chris with Sebastian. She supposed she was too caught up in the whirlwind that was her best friend's life to be thinking about her own. It definitely felt different speaking to him than Chris. Chris was her best friend's boyfriend, and even before that- he spent a lot of time around her because of his friendship with Denise; he'd had said and done things that normalized him. But Sebastian was still a celebrity to her, he was her celebrity crush.

"Are you still there?"

"Um- sorry, I'm here." Luca cleared her throat, strengthening her shaky voice. "He's on his way back?" She quizzed then smiled when she heard Sebastian noise confirmation. "Oh, thank God. I am so glad he's on his way back, I was freaking out. I really thought they weren't going to get the happily ever after they deserved."

"They will, you're just going to have to keep an eye on Denise until Chris gets there and make sure she doesn't do anything she'll regret. I know she's not the type, but she'll definitely attract guys who think she's a damsel in distress." He stated and Luca nodded in agreement. "We don't want any more misunderstandings and unnecessary complications when things are already so messy."

"I keep telling them to talk, but they don't listen." Luca sighed. "They always wait until the last minute when things get messy to sort it out. Do you even know how they got together? It was like a freaking movie, had me on the edge of my seat, and wanting to rip all my hair out." Sebastian laughed and Luca felt herself blush as she smiled. "Anyway, it was really nice talking to you. I'm such a huge fan, I'm definitely going to scream into a pillow when I hang up."

"It was nice talking to you too, Luca," Sebastian replied and Luca tried not to squeal at his use of her name. "You take care of those crazy kids and I'm sure we'll get to meet at their wedding." Luca chuckled in response. "I should go, I gotta go do my job as Cap's right hand man and save his ass." Luca laughed then covered her mouth when she realized she was laughing too loudly. "He's lucky everyone's rooting for him and Denise, otherwise he's going to be in a lot of trouble."

"You're a good friend."

"So are you," Sebastian replied then hung up, leaving Luca to do exactly as she'd told him; she screamed into a pillow. She looked up, laughing when she realized she'd scared Dodger. She couldn't believe this was her life now, she could barely believe it when her best friend got out of a cab with Chris Evans. Now they were dating, his precious dog was living with them, and she'd just spoken to Sebastian Stan. If things weren't so complicated between said best friend and Chris Evans, she'd be a lot happier.

The door opened and Luca turned, frowning when she saw Denise walk in. It'd only been half an hour since she left, so she must've changed her mind about going to work. Denise didn't even throw a glance Luca and Dodger's way as she walked to her bedroom, closing the door behind her. Denise had texted Issac telling him she couldn't make it and was going to get a cab down to LAX to get a last minute flight out to Atlanta. Denise couldn't just let Chris go like that, she needed to apologize and fix things before it was too late. All of it happened because of her, he didn't do anything wrong; she was the one at fault. She had money, enough for a flight to Atlanta because that was what she'd been saving for with all her extra shifts. The original plan, however, was for her to fly down for to surprise Chris for his birthday- not this.

Denise stripped herself from her work clothes and changed into her best red dress- the one she'd worn on her very first date with him. She wiped her tears, applied some makeup, then fixed her hair. By the time she was done, she didn't look like a girl who'd just spent half an hour crying in the stairwell. She slipped on her black heels and her trench coat, then stuffed her wallet and phone into a clutch before she walked back out.

"Whoa," Luca breathed when she saw Denise. There was definite concern about where her best friend was going looking like that. "What are you doing?" She asked but was ignored. "Denise?" Luca followed her as she made her way to the front door. "Why are you so dressed up? Denise, hey. Jesus, stop," Luca caught Denise by the elbow before she could take her leave, she stopped but didn't turn around. "Where are you going?"

"I'm going out," Denise answered vaguely. "Don't worry, I'll be back. Just...in a few days," she mumbled under her breath which increased Luca's concern. "Don't worry," she repeated and Luca frowned, wondering how she was meant to do that. "Will you take care of Dodger until I get back? There are some things I need to sort out before I know where he's going to stay."

"He's not going anywhere because you and Chris-"

"I'll talk to you later," Denise pulled her elbow out of Luca's grip then left before anything else could be could said. She knew Luca would run after her so she sped down the flight of stairs, hoping she wouldn't chase if she couldn't see her. And though Luca didn't chase, she did call after Denise. She didn't know if what she said could be heard but she had to try.

"Chris is coming to LA!"
