《Evolve》15 - Triple Date
Advertisement
Saturday morning is usually the time for me to go swimming, eat breakfast later than I'm usually able to, and hang out with Logan. Today is different, with me being sat in Zoey's room while she helps to make Quinn look cute for the date.
"So you guys, Chase, and Logan are gonna triple date with me and Mark?" Quinn asks, and I nod supportively.
"Yeah, you know, I thought it'd be easier for you on your first date if you had friends around," Zoey tells her.
"And, if it's a dud, you can signal to us and we'll whisk you away," I say. "But that's not going to happen," I add, quickly.
"Oh, that's so sweet of you," she tells us, and I'm glad she's buying it, but feel guilty for lying. "Thanks!"
"No prob," Zoey tells her and I wave her off, pulling out my phone to text Logan to meet us in five minutes, since we're nearly ready. "Oh, and listen. You might not wanna mention the word 'date' in front of Mark."
"Why not?" The brunette asks us.
"Some guys don't like to feel pressured by labels like that, so soon," I excuse.
"Yeah, boys sometimes get weirded out but the word 'date', you know?"
Quinn thinks about what we're saying and shakes her head, "no, not really."
"Well boys are stupid, and weird," I say, finally.
"Trust us," Zoey adds.
"Okay," Quinn says, slowly. "I won't mention the word 'date'."
"Perfect," Zoey says, then realises she forgot one more detail, "oh, and also, he might not talk to you." Quinn turns around, confused. "Boys are weird, you heard her," she says, gesturing to me, and I nod sympathetically. Quinn shrugs.
We get our things together and go, walking with Logan who guides us to the spot where Chase is waiting with Mark, who believes that they're hanging out alone as friends. The picnic they're enjoying is a strange sight, and I wonder how Mark felt when Chase, who he barely knows, invited him for a picnic. There's even a picnic basket, it's very date-like.
"Oh, look, there they are!" Zoey says, and we stop so that Quinn can ready herself for her date.
Logan leans in to whisper to me, so they can't hear, "I can't believe you're making me do this."
"You're doing great," I tell him, not wanting to be as blunt as I usually might be, in case he starts to regret doing this.
"Wow, my first date," Quinn says.
"Mine, too," I tell her, "I think it's going well." I wink at Logan who rolls his eyes. We watch as Chase spots us and begins pointing.
"Hey! Zoey! Quinn! Harper! Logan! Guys, over here!" We go over, and I pity him for a second, hearing a little bit of desperation in his tone.
We join them at the blanket, acting natural.
"Hey," Zoey says, to Chase who greets her back. And then Quinn says hello to Mark, the first real test we've faced so far.

"Hi, Mark."
"Oh, hey Clint," he tells her, and my eyes widen. I feel Logan stiffen as a laugh overtakes him.
"Quinn!" Chase says, trying to help Mark, subtly, but the boy doesn't take the hint.
Quinn obviously heard, and is unsure what's happening, "did you say Clint?"
"Yes, he did," Logan chuckles, and I nudge him with my elbow, while pretending that I'm settling into my seat.
"He said Quinn," Zoey reassures her.
"I said Clint."
Quinn asks, "who's Clint?"
"He meant Quinn," Chase desperately tells her.
"Wait a second," Mark says, and we watch him, carefully, but Chase isn't taking chances.
"Who wants potato salad?"
"I do," I say, "do you, Mark?" I ask, hoping to distract the boy, and also Quinn.
Zoey also helps the conversation change, "potato salad, yay!"
Quinn shyly fondles the flower she brought for the date, "um, Mark, I brought you a flower." She passes it over and he looks at it, as if he's never seen a flower before.
"Thanks?" He takes it, confused.
Zoey sees this and tries to stop the awkwardness, "so why don't we see what's in the picnic basket?"
I nod, fervently, "yeah, I'm really hungry." I look over at Logan, who is grinning.
"Oh, yeah, me too," he says, running a hand through his curls and pointing lazily at the basket.
Zoey reaches into the basket, pulling out a large candle, and I furrow my brow. I actually am hungry. "Ooh, candle," she sniffs it, "scented." She puts it down and Chase gives a thumbs up. Mark is unimpressed, while Quinn is smiling broadly.
"What else?" I ask, trying to keep the excitement levels high. Zoey reaches back in and pulls out a fancy looking glass bottle.
"Sparkling apple juice!" She announces, showing it off. "Good call, Mark," she says, and I prepare myself to cut the boy off when he inevitably denies packing the basket. Because, well, he didn't.
"But, I-I didn't-"
"Woah, are those flowers?" I ask and Chase picks up a literal glass vase with a bunch of pink and yellow flowers inside of it.
"And daisies," Zoey says. "Mark, who knew you were such a romantic?"
"I suspected," Quinn proudly says, and I feel my smile growing tighter.
Mark moves over to Chase, "dude." They have a whispered chat, which I don't need to hear to understand what's being said. Logan and I share a worried glance.
"Hey, who wants some sparkling apple juice?" Chase asks, loudly.
"I do!" Zoey tells him.
"Me!"
"We'll take some," Logan shrugs, putting an arm around my shoulder. I send him a half glare.
Chase pops open the bottle and cheers, "alright!" He pours some into glasses and hands them round, with Mark drinking his completely before I am even holding my own glass. He hands the empty glass to Quinn, and those of us in on the situation share a disappointed look.

"Um, Mark, could you pour me some juice?" Quinn asks, her voice returning to normal after a clear moment of hesitation.
"Yeah, I guess." He takes the cup back and Chase passes him the apple juice. He begins to pour and Quinn grows visibly brighter.
"Aw, you pour so cute!" She tells him, and I hide my grin in my own glass of juice.
"Aw, you drink so cute," Logan mocks, and I nearly choke, which luckily draws Mark's attention from her suspicious comment.
"You know what? I'm full, and Harper looks to be done," Chase says.
"Yeah, me too," Zoey says, and we all shuffle nervously on the blanket.
"Uh, you wanna go catch a movie on campus?" Chase asks the pair.
"Movie, yay!" Zoey says.
Mark looks at the basket, briefly, "but we haven't eaten yet?"
"Right," Chase says, and reaches into the basket, pulling out a huge stick of salami. "Here, you can eat it on the way." He tosses it at Mark, and I pretend to scratch my nose, desperately trying to hide my amusement.
We all get up and head to the theatre, with Mark deciding that he doesn't care and following us with the stick of meat in his hand. When we get to the theatre, we discuss how the fake date is going.
How do you think it's going?" Zoey asks, and we all struggle for words.
"I don't know," Chase tries, "the picnic was a little rough."
"A little?" Logan scoffs.
I groan, "this isn't going well, at all. I mean Mark keeps nearly blowing it and we can't make it seem more like a date for Quinn without at least trying to get him interested. We're stuck."
"Yeah," Logan says. "What movie are we seeing?"
"I don't know, but it's two hours of silence," Chase reminds us, and I sigh in relief.
I get into a small fight with Logan, with him kicking my foot and me kicking his, until he forcibly turns my body so I can see that Quinn is holding Mark's hand.
"Well, will ya not?" He asks, and she shakes it off.
"Oh, Mark, I love it that you're so shy!" I grimace, scared that this is all about to end very badly, very suddenly. "Could he be cuter? I think not," she says, and we all watch in an awkward silence.
"Look, Clint-" he says, and I'm about to cause a distraction when something much worse happens without any help from us.
"Excuse me!" A girl comes over and we all watch, gobsmacked.
"Courtney?" Mark asks, and the four of us repeat her name, dreading to find out who Courtney is.
"I cannot believe this!"
Quinn looks to Mark, "who's Courtney?"
"I'm his girlfriend!" I gasp at this, and watch Logan start smirking while he nods his head.
"What?" Quinn turns sharply to confront the poor boy, as Zoey and Chase realise what a mistake they've made. I can't even talk, I'm too anxious.
"Mark Del Figgalo, are you on a date with this girl?" Courtney asks, and I watch them, worriedly.
"His last name is 'Del Figgalo'?" Logan whispers and I elbow him, gently.
"No!"
"No?"
He stammers, not sure how to escape his situation and having two upset girls questioning him. "I'm on a date with Chase!"
"Uh, it's true," Chase says, catching the girl's attention. "We had a picnic together, and sparkling
"They did! I saw it all!" Zoey defends.
Courtney doesn't believe it, though it's true, and I feel bad for Mark. "Yeah, nice try. I can't believe you'd do this to me Mark. We are done! O-ver!" She walks off but soon comes back, stealing his salami and then whacking him with it.
Logan breaks, laughing loudly while I recoil at the sight of Mark keeling over. "Courtney," he calls, but he's winded and she doesn't hear him.
"Mark, I can't believe you would date me when you already have a girlfriend," Quinn says, and I feel a stab of pity; he didn't deserve one breakup but now he gets to have two.
"Who dated you?" He asks, still confused.
"You may have movie star good looks," Logan stares incredulously at them both, "but I don't care anymore! Good day, Mark." She walks off.
"But-"
"I said good day!"
Mark looks at us, stunned, and we all awkwardly shrug, not sure how to explain this. We decide to just run, with Logan grabbing my hand and pulling me after him when he realises that Chase and Zoey are leaving.
We make it a fair distance away and then split up, knowing the fake date is over. I go with Logan, who lets out all of the laughter he's been holding back, attracting attention from the people around us.
He catches me looking at him in disappointment, and he scoffs. "I held it together like you wanted me to, alright?"
"Yeah," I cave. "You did good." I catch sight of something over my shoulder and my eyes widen. "Is that Mark with Quinn?" We both stare at the pair, deciding it must be them. "Come on," I tell him, and we go over to them both.
"Oh hey, Harper, Logan," Quinn says. "Hey, look, Zoey and Chase told us everything."
"Oh," I say, nervously.
"And it's okay," she tells me. "We're going to the lounge, if you want to join us?" They're looking cozy, and I catch on to what's happening.
"Uh, we're good, actually, but have fun!" They leave and Logan laughs.
"They're a couple now?" I shrug when he looks to me for answers, and he breaks down into a new fit of laughs, leaning against me.

8 391A Merchants Tale
Legends rise. Country’s fall. Empires wage war. But what supports these great powers, allowing them to function as a single organism. Is it the common man, Farmers and Millers forming the backbone of the land? The Soldiers and Guards keeping public order? The Wives and Widows supporting from the side-lines? The Nobles from their seats of power? Or the elusive Sorcerers who wield power untold? And what maggots crawl in this great creature, all trying to get a piece of its slowly decaying flesh. The gangs of the Underworld hidden in the shadows? The Bandits and Deserters hiding at the edges, ready to pounce on any weakness? Witches and Warlocks working their dark art? Or other Nations clawing at their neighbour’s, salivating over the riches they stand to gain from another’s demise. There is one group that belongs to neither group. They thrive on others misfortune and bring with them salvation and destruction in equal measure. They can raise a kingdom up or tear it down screaming and kicking. These are the merchants, the lifeblood of kingdoms, because what is the one thing above all else men crave. Is it Love? Power? Destruction? All these things can be acquired with one simple thing. Wealth. Wealth is the true power behind the world. Wealth can buy army’s, strangle kingdoms, and turn even the most devout man from his faith. Merchants come in many forms, shapes and sized, some gaudy, bleeding the people for all their worth, some tricky, preferring to make contracts and debts to trap men. And some desperate, doing all they can to sell even the most worthless of junk. This is a story of one merchant who goes against all a merchant stands for. He works not for profit but for some unseen goal, a prophesy aeons old. He comes and goes like a ghost, bringing with him hope and victory. All pray for his arrival to spare them from despair. But what about when he doesn’t show? What about the people he doesn’t save? For this man is no angel, no saint sent to save the masses. His goal was never to deliver hope. It merely isn’t time for their destruction yet. For nothing is eternal. And all things must end. But what comes after? Quick disclaimer in response to the review I got, this is my first story and somewhat of an experiment for me, hopefully my writing will get better the more I practice. Thanks for any helpful advice :)
