《Wrecked》The 217

I couldn't hear a thing, the ringing in my ear blocking out that sense all together. But god I could see and smell everything around me, but I didn't want to. I wanted those senses to fail me too because the sight before me – there were no words.
I was frozen, my limbs refusing to listen to my demands to get up and do something. Anything. But they wouldn't. I began to shake, violently, until something snapped within me and I jolted into consciousness.
"DRU! God damn it, get up."
It was then that I kicked into gear, jumping up out of the seat and ignoring my protesting body. To my right my best friend, Darcy, was sandwiched between her seat and what could only be a part of the plane. Her forehead was red, the sticky residue dripping down from the top of her head. Her leg shouldn't have been able to bend the way it was. Before I could even reach for the silver bar she held out her hands in protest.
"Don't worry about me, Dru, I can wiggle out of here. Just go - go help everyone else." Her eyes didn't betray her; there was no glimmer of fear to be seen amongst the flecks of brown and green- just strength. "Please D, I can take care of myself. "
Opening my mouth in protest she shot me a look that could kill, if she wasn't bleeding and covered in soot I would have laughed at her.
Wordlessly I turned around. My stomach dropped as I became aware of what was around me. The plane had gone down all right. Down onto a beach that was now littered with parts of the plane, and people. So many people. People crying, people screaming, people running, people without limbs, and people – people who weren't moving.
Bodies looked as if they'd been scattered around as easy as sprinkles on a cupcake, they were burnt and deformed hardly recognisable. To our left there was a lady, burnt to a crisp, missing her legs mumbling, "My kids, save my kids... kids... save.... Please." But there was no one around her, no one I could save.
I felt it before I saw it. The fire erupted 10 meters ahead of where our part of the plane had landed, my face immediately burning up. But I didn't care about myself; I needed to save those people that could still be helped. Those people who's screams filled the air.
"HELP US PLEASE!" "PLEASE MY SISTER WONT MOVE" "ANYONE PLEASE."
I ran to where to screams originated from, falling over bodies, debris and smaller patches of fire. I pushed threw it all, my mind on autopilot.
There were two Indian women, and after scanning over them they seemed fine. It was the woman who they were crouched over was not. She was clinging to a lifeless body; a man with a large piece of metal pierced threw his chest. Her tears were silent but her body shuddered violently as she whispered his name.
Looking to her sisters for assistance I grabbed her shoulders, only to realise one of them was dislocated. "Chadna, please, leave him. The fire is going to get us and we won't leave you." A sister pleaded as they grabbed at her too, but all of our attempts were useless she wasn't leaving this man. I could feel the fire closing in, and I knew that I had to act. In a snap movement I grabbed her shoulder and before she could protest I snapped it into place. The instant pain was enough of a distraction to make her let go of the man, giving us enough time to grab her and pull her away.

I felt another pair of hands reach out to her, they were strong- forceful. The two of us pulled her as far away as we could until we reached another large gathering of people. The boy and I let go of her as she fell onto her sisters- clinging to them as she had her husband. I nodded at the girls; they understood I had to go back in.
I ran back in, my head scanning for those that I could save. Every second person I would drop down and check for pulses but there wasn't any.
"It's all your fault, she's dead because of you. Don't you dare help me! Get away from me!" The blonde girl threw a powerful right hook at the boy, and he stood there- not fighting back. "Do something you ass! Hit back! Do anything!" The venom in her words scared even me, I was almost too terrified to approached but I had to. Around them lay over 20 bodies, some were life less other were bent over trying to use CPR or sobbing over their loved ones. They all seemed young, a school group probably.
The girl's eyes fell on me and she tripped on her way to run into my arms. "Please, save them, I don't know what to do." She yanked me over to a pile of girls- all pressed underneath a large part of the plane. They were dead, I didn't have to check to know and either did the girl. When she saw the look in my eyes she felt to the ground, "Please, get her out of here, get them all to safety. It's not safe to hang around here, say good bye and let us help." I hated to say it, especially to the boy she seemed to hate, but they all understood as they slowly got up and headed to where I showed them.
It was all a blur, I don't know how long it was or how many people I pulled away from the bodies of their loved ones, how many pulses I checked to come back with nothing. I counted 32 people that I managed to get out and away from the fire that was about to erupt any second. But there was still so much blood on my hands, every part of me wanted to stop to find Darcy and cry but I needed to get these people to safety- I needed them to survive.
My body was giving up, refusing to take another step forward but my mind was racing. There had to be more people, more people that were still alive. Except I had done about twenty laps of the crash sight and couldn't find anyone else that was alive. It wasn't going to be long until the fire spread across everything so I had to do something quickly. We were going to need resources, clothes, food, and shelter everything depending on how long it takes for someone to come find us.
I hated to do it but I begun to reach around and pick up suitcases that were thrown around, peoples carry on bags- as many as I could physically grab at once. My body was weighed down, pushing through all the walls my mind was putting up as I grudged forward. Near where the people were gathered I dumped the bags and some people noticed, following me as I headed back in.
My clock ticked off another hour when the fire erupted; we'd barely made it back from the last round of equipment gathering when we heard it. I was flung backwards and thrown into a strong grip, that same grip pushed me off them immediately. "Watch it," The voice grouched as I pushed myself up, checking to make sure no one was harmed.

Darcy was by my side before I even had time to stand upright fully, I felt immediately at ease just knowing she had made it out. "I'm fine D, I feel a little rusty but you'll fix that when we have time- okay?" She reassured me, grabbing my hand and giving it a squeeze of reassurance. She knew me better than any one else, knew exactly what was pressing at me, what was make it feel like a something was gripping on my heart- squeezing it and making it feel like I couldn't breath. "Deep breath, and clam everyone down." She whispered, nodding towards the group of bloodied survivors. Clearing my throat I stepped towards the front.
"Listen guys, I don't want to stop anyone from grieving but I know that we need to start doing something. It's going to be dark soon and we're going to need shelter. There are all the bags and things we could find, please just help yourself and set something up and maybe get some warm clothes. Anyone that's injured I'd be glad to help, if anyone needs assistance please just stay here and I'll do what I can –" Before I could finish a voice cut me off.
"And why should we listen to you?" The voice belonged to a young guy; maybe just a year or two older than I, his hair in dark curls falling over his forehead. His eyes shone out from behind the soot and blood that covered his features. "What makes you in charge?" His arrogant stature bothered me, his words laced with challenge.
"I'm not in charge, I'm just trying to make sure that everyone survives. To make sure no one else has to die! By all means step up and help out." My voice rose as I struggled to keep calm, I didn't want anyone to see me lose it- I had to be strong.
"That's exactly what a leader would say, we don't need anyone in charge- let everyone mourn. If you want shelters- build them yourself." He was almost yelling and I could see people perking up, nodding to each other in agreement with him.
"I have every intention to, I just wanted to make sure everyone gets some medical attention." I kicked at the first aid bag besides my feet, the last bag I'd recovered.
" Look at you. Trying to make us realise how lucky we are that we have a saviour? We don't need you, I'm sure everyone is capable of looking after himself or herself. What does our saviour have that no one else does?" He was fight in front of me now, pushing me waiting for me to react, to snap.
"Maybe it has something to do with being a med student, and unless we have any doctors here she's our best bet." This time it was Darcy who spoke, before I could even open my mouth she stepped between the two of us pushing him backwards in the process. I saw two or three older people stand up, pulling children up besides them.
"We could use some help, we all could actually." A mother with a gash separating the two sides of her face held her daughter in her arms- the daughter looked green and broken. There was a murmur of agreement throughout the people as more stood up nodding their heads in agreement.
"Look, almighty saviour, take care of the people but don't you care try and control us. We don't need a leader." He brushed past Darcy and I could feel each warm breath huffed down my neck as his eyes shot venom at me. He was dark, brooding and I wouldn't admit it aloud but there was something dangerous about him.
"I wouldn't dream of it, I don't want to be a leader – I just want to survive." For the first time I bit back with a mirrored tone, allowing my annoyance to reflect my annoyance. Having had enough I brushed passed him, forcibly shoving his with my shoulder as I passed. Briefly I turned over my shoulder and added one last comment. "My name is Dru. Not saviour, you might want to remember that If I do end up being the only one that can save you."
"Jesse. In case you ever mistake me for giving a damn." He shot back, but I was already bent over the first person in line. It was nothing I hadn't seen before, an easy fix.
This continued until the sun was no where to be seen, it had long disappeared behind the trees on the other side of the island. My body was aching, resisting each time I leant out to help a new person but I pushed through. This was what it had been like in Tanzania working for doctors without borders, endless hours for endless rewards. I missed that, and even though in a way this finally allowed me to practice again it didn't make me miss it any less.
"Look, you can treat me tomorrow morning. You've done everything you can for now, you need a break." The lady whose knee I'd just splinted grabbed my hand, stopping me from addressing any more of her wounds. Her touch startled me, awoke me from her autopilot mode. Her caring eyes bore into me, I could feel her concern for me radiating out. "I wont take no for an answer, go please." She helped me get up, just as much as I helped her. I mumbled an insincere thank you, I wanted to keep going- I needed to keep going. But no one was left for me to help, they'd all gone to try and find shelter for the night.
I was glad to find what I did when I walked up to the base camp, there was one large make shift cover made up of tarps and trees and suitcases and rope. Who ever made it, I was grateful for them. Below it there was seats from the plane set up in the corners, a large fire set up in the middle with people scattered around every where, some asleep and others chattering amongst themselves.
"How long until people come and find us?" The voice besides me startled me, welcoming me to a brunette that had a blanket draped over her shoulders. She was small, but definitely looked like she could pack a punch "They will come and find us, wont they?" Her large blue eyes met mine with curiosity, like I had all the answers.
"Of Corse they will, as soon as they notice we're missing." Another voice responded for me, this time a man. His scruffy brown hair was highlighted with natural blond streaks that only a surfer would have. His tan skin contrasted against the dark light the moon has cast over. "It wont be long." He stated firmly, crossing his arms over his chest. "I'm Vincent by the way."
"And I'm Caila." The girl with the eyes added.
"Dru." I stated simply, distracted as I spotted the curly haired boy across the fire. He was standing over three young kids, I swear he almost smiled but any trace of it vanished from his face before it even existed. I wish I could lie and say he didn't intrigue me, or annoy me because I knew I couldn't afford to be losing it around him.
"It's actually Andrea." My best friend filtered over, her hair swept by the wind and a cheeky smile plastered on her face. If only her eyes didn't tell me another story, she looked weak, holding back- I brushed it off she's probably just tired. "And I- I am Darcy, her better half."
"She wishes." I teased, knowing full well it was true. Ever since we were younger we'd always completed each other, she was the bubbly ball of energy that never stopped. And I was anything but that, I liked to keep to myself and had always thrown myself into studying and boxing. Darcy was the only person able to drag me out of my shell, force me to see the beauty of things around me and I had grown beyond dependant on my best friend. A hush fell over the four of us, a comfortable silence that none of us bothered to break.
Looking around all the faces of those underneath the shelter by heart grew heavier, It was almost as if I could see the blood on my hands. So many didn't make it, so many of them weren't surrounded by their loved ones- why was I lucky enough to be? They had all been listening to our conversation, and all perked up when they heard the next words.
"How many made it?" Caila's voice broke threw my concentration, and my breath hitched in anticipation for the answer.
"50." Darcy breathed, her eyes a pool of worry as she gazed at me.
50. I was the reason 217 people was now 50. All because I was on the run.
"We're fucked." Vincent mumbled. But he was wrong, we weren't we were going to make it out of this, no mater what I was going to ensure no one else died and people need to know that. They needed hope.
"No we aren't. Just wrecked."
