▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Saffron, Harry and Ron made it away from their peers in pursuit of did the run into the sharp, commanding voice of Professor McGonagall.
"Potter! Mitchell! Weasley! What are you doing?"
"We're going to see Hermione, Professor," Saffron said instantly, feeling Harry and Ron's eyes lock onto her in fear, expecting Professor McGonagall to explode on them. "Please, Professor, we haven't seen her in ages, we, well---" Saffron started to blush under McGonagall's gaze, but was glad she did so as it added to the effect. "We wanted to tell her that she'd be awake soon, and ---" She paused and let out a trembling nervous laugh. "Tell her that she should be awake in time for the exams. . . "
For a few moments, Saffron wasn't sure that Professor McGonagall was convinced by her lie. But, when the woman's voice shook, Saffron had to bite her lip so as to not smile, as the trio knew her act had done the trick.
"Yes, I realise this has been hardest on the friends of those who have been . .. I quite understand, Miss Mitchell. Go ahead, I shall tell Professor Binns where you are, let either Madam Pomfrey or Miss Endacott know I have given my permission,"
Saffron gave a sigh of relief, and unlike the rest of her actions in those few moments, a genuine one followed, in the form of a solitary tear glistening as it rolled down her olive skin. "Thank you, Professor," and with a small smile, Saffron, Harry and Ron walked away, hardly daring to believe that they'd avoided detention. As they turned the corner, they distinctly heard Professor McGonagall blow her nose.
"I'm impressed," scoffed Ron, being genuine. "How did you pull that one out of your arse--" He paused and blushed just as Saffron had too, before amending his sentence. "I mean your bag, so quickly,"
"Thanks, Ron,"
Even though they hadn't intended on going to the hospital wing, Saffron didn't mind. They hadn't been allowed to see Hermione for a while, in spite of Saffron practically begging Amanda. The school had been firm on their policy until now.

Once at the wing, Madam Pomfrey begrudgingly let them in, telling them that: "There's just no point talking to a Petrified. person," s
"Well, I would like to think that people would visit me if I was petrified," Saffron replied, curtly, leaving Madam Pomfrey rather taken aback as the matron let them be.
"Wonder if she did see the attacker, though?" said Ron taking a seat next to Hermione."Because if he sneaked up on them all, no one'll ever know..."
Saffron frowned. They had gone through the rounds of having that conversation over and over again, but that didn't it any easier. She looked into Hermione's fearful eyes and did so until Harry tapped her on the shoulder, pointing at Hermione's sleeve.
"Is that paper?" Saffron questioned, leaning over to see that it was indeed paper folded up in her sleeve.
"Go on and get it out," Ron whispered.
"Can you make anything out of it?" asked Saffron, walking around Ron, in order to try and get a closer look at Harry getting the paper.
Saffron was shocked by how long it took to yank off of Hermione. Her hand was ever so slightly clasped over it, but that was enough to make it rigid in her hand. Finally, however, Harry got it out.
"What is it?" asked Saffron, taking the paper off Harry and smoothing it out, Harry and Ron leaned in close to read it, too.
"Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our land, there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk, known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach gigantic size and live many hundreds of years, is born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it."

Underneath this, lay one word that had been handwritten. Saffron would recognise the handwriting anywhere, for she had copied it countless times during the two years of knowing Hermione. It read: PIPES
"Of course," breathed Saffron. "Hermione did it, she figured it out, of course, she did. She gave us the answer but we weren't smart enough to take it off her. The monster in the chamber in the basilisk, the king of the serpents. That's why you've been hearing the voice Harry, and nobody else could because you're a Parselmouth. So the basilisk kills people by looking them directly in the eye- but no one has, or at least no one who is alive has. Mrs Norris must have seen it through the water, I specifically remember water Moaning Myrtle's bathroom being flooded that day. Colin, Colin saw it through-" she paused, and Harry finished her sentence.
"His camera, the basilisk burned the film inside"
"Exactly," she said, clapping her hands together. "That's why the photos were erased, so he was petrified. Then there was Olly and Emilia, they were in the toilets, right in front of a mirror, so they must have seen it through that. Justin.. he- he must have saw it through Nearly Headless Nick! Nick was killed- but wasn't because he's already dead, so Justin was just petrified, and Hermione and Penelope, that Ravenclaw girl," she gasped, "The mirror! Of course, nobody would have been in the library that day really, there was Quidditch. Hermione must have figured it out, all of it I mean. Surely she told Penelope, who took out her mirror and then they were petrified."
"The crowing of the rooster... is fatal to it"! Harry then read out. "Hagrid's roosters were killed! The Heir of Slytherin didn't want one anywhere near the castle once the Chamber was opened! Spiders flee before it.! It all fits!"
"But how's the basilisk been getting around the place?" asked Ron. "A giant snake... Someone would've seen..."
"Pipes," Harry pointed at the word on the sheet that Saffron her out. "Pipes... it's been using the plumbing. I've been hearing that voice inside the walls..."
"It all fits," said Saffron in bewilderment, "I can't believe we didn't realise before. . . but then, where's the chamber?"
"What if it's a bathroom? What if it's in--" croaked Ron apprehensively
"Moaning Myrtle's bathroom," said Harry and Saffron together.
The three of them didn't mean and just stared at each other for a few minutes, processing what they, or, rather Hermione, had put together.
"This means," announced Harry finally breaking the silence, "I can't be the only Parselmouth in the school. The Heir of Slytherin's one, too. That's how he's been controlling the basilisk."
"What're we going to do?" questioned Ron. "Should we go straight to McGonagall?"
"Of course, we have to tell somebody," said Saffron, "how long until break?" she asked Harry, who checked his watch.
"Ten minutes," replied Harry, jumping up "Let's go to the staff room,"
The three of them thanked Hermione for being the genius she was and ran straight downstairs and went into the empty staff room to wait for someone to show up. On a normal occasion, they wouldn't have gone into the place as it wasn't for students, however, desperate times called for desperate measures. They waited for the bell for break, but it never came. Something chilling came instead of it. As Professor McGonagall's voice rung through the castle.
"All students to return to their House dormitories at once. All teachers return to the staff room. Immediately, please."
Saffron froze and turned to the boys.
"You don't think . . . that doesn't mean. . . "
Their faces gave her the undesired answer, as all three felt certain that yet another attack had taken place.

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Rifts of War
The visions. It was they that told us about our future. They said that we were the true rulers of the world, the spreaders of light, the guardians of the rightious path. The visions gave us signs of a bright new world, one united under a single banner of light. All those who opposed us suffered and here we stand on the top, watching over the world. We thought it would last forever, but we thought wrong. The visions once again spoke to us and gave us insight, but not to glory or power. They spoke of a terrible fate. An enemy from beyond the realm, one that wishes to destroy us all, one that threatens to bring about the end of the light and usher an age of darkness. As its guardians, we could not allow that. And so we decided to strike. Our armies and our mages gather at the great rift that connects our world. No one knew what we would find. Treasures? Rich land? Savage beasts? There was only one way to find out. A/N: The story starts out pretty quick and I know people will say this is a "military p*rn" but that's only the beginning. I really do have much more planned for this book so I can make a true 'war of the worlds' type of deal. So stick around and enjoy
