《Heartbreak Town (COMPLETED)》Chapter Thirty Nine (FINAL Chapter)

Renne woke early in the morning a week later, rolling over to be greeted by an empty bed. Opening her eyes, she saw numerous cardboard boxes around her bedroom, then remembered why they were there.

Sitting up in her bed, Renne ran a hand through her hair, only for it to get caught on her engagement ring on her left hand. Freeing the hair from it, Renne brought her hand down to her face, staring at the ring. She knew that she was making the right decision by breaking up with Matt, but it was still hard for her since he was someone that she had spent nearly every day with for the past five years.

Slipping out of bed, Renne trudged her way into the bathroom, flipping on the water in the shower, shucking her clothes and letting the warm water soothe her body.

After combing out her growing hair, Renne got dressed for the day before deciding to start her day off right: with her devotional book, and her Bible. Crossing her legs, sitting on the corner of her bed, Renne opened her Jesus Calling daily devotional. As always, the words on the page seemed to really stick out, almost like it was written just for her. Opening her well loved Bible, Renne read, and then reread, each verse to herself, glad that her time alone with the Lord was how she started her day.

After a long prayer, Renne felt rejuvenated, knowing her "Jesus time" was exactly what she needed to help her get through everything that was happening in her life at the time. With a grin on her face, Renne knew she would have the strength to finish helping Matt move all of his stuff out of the house, and into his place.

Standing off the bed, Renne walked over to the large wooden dresser, perfectly aligned between the two large windows. It was the dresser that her and Matt shared; the couple were practically living together, after being together for five years, it had just sort of happened. They rarely shared the same bed, and even if they did, they never had sex since it was something that they had both wanted to wait until marriage to share.

Renne grabbed a couple of the boxes, making her way downstairs to deposit them into the living room next to where Matt had made a stack of his things. Just as she made her way back upstairs, Renne heard the kitchen door open downstairs, knowing in just a few seconds Matt would be beside her in the bedroom.

Sure enough, as she picked up another box, Renne could hear Matt's loud steps making their way up the stairs before the knob on the door turned, and in entered Matt.

"Hey." Matt greeted, crossing the room to be beside Renne. He looked at her for a couple silent seconds before his gaze was diverted when Renne walked out of the room with another box.

Once they pair was downstairs, Matt thanked Renne. "Thank you for your help carrying this stuff down here." They had successfully packed all of Matt's belongings into the bed of his truck. Matt turned, resting a hand against the bed of his truck.

"No problem. I think that's the last of it, right?" Renne stood, facing the man she almost married. Things were awkward between then, for obvious reasons, but at the same time it wasn't as awkward as she expected, just proving to her that they were "done" way before they broke up.

"I think so." He watched Renne, wanting desperately to spill his heart, but he knew it wouldn't do any good. Renne had put up with him for long enough, and he knew that she deserved much better...she deserved Swayde. Every part of him wanted Renne back, but he was done fighting...he knew he needed to let her go for real this time, no matter how he felt.

"Oh, there's one thing you forgot." Renne took a step closer, turning the ring off of her finger, handing it to Matt.

Matt took the ring, taking a step closer to Renne. He reached out his arms to her, asking her for a hug. It took everything in him to not let the tears fall that were rising in his eyes. He swallowed hard to hide his feelings. Letting out a breath, Matt dropped a kiss on Renne's forehead for the last time. "Go get him." He whispered.

Renne, much to Matt's disapproval, pulled back from their hug to look up at Matt. "What?"

"Swayde. You belong with him, Rein. I'm sorry I have been the one to hold you back from being with who you truly love. You deserve pure happiness, and I have only ever seen that side of you when you're with Swayde. So, please, be with him." With each word he spoke, Matt felt his heart breaking a little more, but he knew he was saying the right thing; he meant every word.

"Thank you." Renne breathed out, trying to contain her smile.

"Goodbye, Renne. Thank you for five good years." He said before getting behind the wheel of his truck. Pulling out, Matt gave Renne one final wave before his taillights was all Renne saw.

"Mamaw, hey, it's Reagan." Renne excitedly answered the phone. She took the steering wheel of her truck in one hand, speeding past all the cars in the slow lane.

"Hi, sweetheart. How are you?" Mamaw asked, ready to start a long conversation, but Renne wasn't in the mood for that.

With a huge grin on her face, Renne responded, "I'm great. I'm fantastic, honestly! Umm, I am actually about an hour away from Alpine Ridge right now." She paused, biting her lip.

"Oh, really? Why? What for?" Mamaw inquired.

"Well, I was wondering if Swayde was still there, by any chance?" Renne couldn't contain her excitement as signs for cities in Wyoming told her she was getting closer and closer.

"Swayde? What for?" Mamaw hesitated, then inhaled quickly, clearly with excitement. "Oh! Are you asking for him for why I think you are?"

Renne nodded, hardly able to find words, but when she remembered Mamaw couldn't visibly see her, Renne answered, "Yes." It came out much more dreamy than she had meant for it to be, but she couldn't help herself.

"Well, I am just beside myself, on the brink of tears. Happy tears, that is." Mamaw could barely talk.

Unable to hold it back, Renne let out a chuckle. "So, is Swayde still there, at the ranch, Mamaw?"

"Well, he said he was fixin' to leave real soon, but I reckon I can find some more work for him to do to keep him busy till you get here." She offered.

"Thank you, Mamaw. I will be there in about forty five minutes. Love you."

"Love you too, sweetheart."

Renne pushed her foot down harder on the gas pedal, making her truck accelerate; she couldn't get to the ranch quick enough.

Renne's truck jerked to a stop on the gravel, making a loud crunching noise. In one motion, Renne shut off the ignition and unbuckled her seat belt, hopping out of the cab, slamming the door shut as she jogged into Mamaw and Papaw's house.

"Swayde?" Renne called his name, looking into each room as she ventured through the house.

"He's out in the barn." Mamaw said with a smile, coming out of the kitchen. She wrapped her arms around Renne. "Go talk to him, tiger." The smile never fell from her face even as she turned and walked back into the kitchen.

Renne walked out of the house, making her way to the barn. Only when she opened the door was she able to take a breath for the first time. However, once she saw how handsome Swayde looked down the aisle, stacking bales with his tight short sleeved shirt, accenting his muscles, Renne found it hard to breathe again. He still hadn't noticed that Renne had entered the barn, so Renne took the second to admire hard working Swayde. Never before had his black Stetson looked so dadgum good.

Convincing herself to take a step forward, Renne took in a breath, walking further into the barn, toward the man that she had returned to confess her love for. Finally, when she was about ten feet from Swayde, he finally turned around and saw Renne.

She continued her trek to him. "Hey, cowboy." Renne smiled, tucking her hands into the back pockets of her jeans.

Swayde smiled, removing his gloves to wipe his sweaty forehead. "Reagan, what....what are you doin' here?" He chuckled out, taking another step closer. By the look in his eyes, Renne knew that he knew exactly why she came back, and he couldn't be happier. "Mamaw told me to come out and stack bales because someone was coming over, but I didn't think it would be you, but I'm so-"

Renne didn't let Swayde finish. Stepping forward, Renne took his handsome and perfect face in her hands and kissed his soft lips, more passionately than ever before.

Removing his cowboy hat, Swayde welcomed the kiss, and the one after that, but before he could kiss her back a third time, he hesitantly pulled back to ask, "Wait, does this mean that you broke up with Matt?"

Happy tears began to rise in Renne's eyes as she gave into the hold he had on her waist. "Yeah." Her fingers were playing with Swayde's ear as she answered him. "I realized after you called me that the wedding I was planning was ours, not Matt's and mine." Leaning forward, Renne whispered, "I love you so much, Swayde. I'm all yours now."

A smile as wide as the Wyoming mountain range spread across Swayde's lips as he lowered his head, covering his lips over Renne's. "I love you too, and I gotta say...it's about dang time."
