《Heartbreak Town (COMPLETED)》Chapter Thirty Eight

Renne had been back to Healing Hearts for close almost a month now. Things had been nonstop busy at the ranch, so the wedding planning had been put on hold for the most part. Numerous times, Renne had talked to Matt about pushing the date back since a month was nowhere near enough time for her to plan a wedding, especially since she was doing all of the planning by herself. However, every time she had brought up the wedding topic with Matt, it had just ended in a fight. Matt kept pushing for the date they had chosen, but Renne wanted a later date...a much later date. Part of her wondered if she wanted to postpone the wedding because there was someone back in Wyoming who was keeping her from tying down her roots with Matt. If she was being honest with herself, nothing seemed to be going right with anything to do with the wedding, and Renne was starting to have doubts. However, every time that those negative thoughts surfaced, Renne tucked them away, telling herself they were just nerves and pre-wedding jitters.

Letting out a sigh, Renne tapped her pencil anxiously against one of her open binders she had sitting on the table next to her open laptop. She never knew finding a catering company would be so difficult. Heck, Renne didn't even have the guest list finalized, let alone send out invitations. There was still so much that needed done, and saying that doing everything by herself was overwhelming was definitely an understatement.

Tucking one of her legs under her knee as she sat in the chair at the kitchen table, Renne looked between the magazine clippings and the open catering company's screen on her laptop. Scrolling down on the page, Renne scanned over the pricing section. "Why is food so expensive?" She mumbled to herself, knowing Matt would get upset with her if he knew she was stressing over the price since he had handed her his credit card, telling her to get whatever she wanted to make their wedding day perfect for her. However, Renne was never the one to go willy nilly, buying stuff, even for a wedding. Needless to say, she had always been frugal, even when she had enough money to throw around.

Closing out of the catering tabs on her laptop, Renne turned her attention to the guest list. The only people on her side that she knew she would for sure be inviting were: a couple friends she had met recently, Mamaw and Papaw, Doug and his kids, and Swayde. Her eyes lingered on that last name on the paper for a couple seconds. Never would she have thought his name would be on the guest list; whenever she used to think of her future, Swayde was always the one she was walking down the aisle towards. Why had that vision changed, or had it?

Almost psychically shaking the thought from her head, Renne cast her eyes to Matt's guest list. It was long, almost a whole page filled. It would be a decent sized wedding. As she went over the names, Renne counted up the number of people she didn't know versus the ones she did. The number of people she actually knew was very small, not surprising to her. Once she got to the bottom of the page, Renne lifted her pencil, about to add another name, but stopped herself. She had contemplated adding Chris...Christina...the woman pregnant with Matt's child. The thought bounced itself around in Renne's brain. Deciding to write down Chris's name, adding parentheses and a question mark beside it, she made a mental note to ask Matt his thoughts on inviting her, even though she knew he would most likely tell her, "The more the merrier."

Content with the tentative, long guest list, Renne set it aside, pulling out her sample invitation pictures. They were all pretty, but Renne was unable to pin one down; none of her screamed out to her.

Running a hand through her hair as she glanced at the mess she had made on the table, with numerous papers, pamphlets and samples sprawled all over the table, almost covering it entirely. As she flipped the page of invitation pictures over, Renne's phone rang somewhere under one of the growing piles of wedding paraphernalia.

Thankful for a distraction, Renne didn't care who was calling her. Tossing aside a few papers, she finally found her cell phone under a wedding dress magazine.

Turning her phone so she could see the name, Renne tried to hide a smile when she saw Swayde's name and picture fill the screen. Since she was staring, she almost forgot to answer the call.

She didn't care what Swayde was calling about, as long as she didn't have to think about her wedding for another second. "Hey, perfect timing. I needed a break." Renne answered get phone, exasperated. Leaning back in her chair, Renne ran a hand over her forehead, her eyes falling on the open binder of wedding stuff. With an eye roll, she slammed shut the binder, not wanting to look at it's contents any longer. Renne was glad that her and Swayde had made up from their tiff over the phone the other day. Sure, it wasn't easy for them to make up at first, but then again, Renne thought about how far they had come and what they had been through together, and she knew she couldn't stay mad at him. Swayde must have felt the same way, because only a couple days after he had gotten upset with Renne on the phone, he had texted her, apologizing. Hearing his voice now, Renne knew he was the only true friend she had, and not someone she wanted to lose again.

Swayde inhaled, letting out a chuckle that made Renne smile. "I was just calling to check in because I'm on a long drive to go help a buddy with something. Oh, I ran into Marjorie and Kenny the other day. They said to tell you hello."

Renne's smile faded at the mention of the adorable couple her and Swayde had met while Renne was back in Wyoming. Marjorie had approached Renne while she was in line to get ice cream while Swayde had been watching Mallory's kids as they played on the playground beside the cream shop. Marjorie had told Renne that her and Swayde made an adorable couple, it was evident they were madly in love, and that their kids were adorable. Renne had chuckled, telling Marjorie that they were her nieces and nephew, not her children, and that her and Swayde were just friends, but Marjorie's words had always stuck with Renne. She certainly missed the couple, but she especially missed Marjorie's words of wisdom, and her prayers, as they met once a week for coffee.

Swayde's voice interrupted Renne's thoughts. "You said you needed a break. What are you workin' on?"

"Wedding stuff. It's just so stressful." Renne let out an airy chuckle as she rubbed her forehead.

"Well, that's not good. Aren't planning weddings supposed to be fun and exciting, not stressful?" Swayde said it with a smile in his voice, but Renne didn't think it was funny. It was true. At Swayde's comment she realized something that she had been blind to for such a long time...or at least tried to ignore. "Reagan, you still there?" Swayde asked Renne after a few silent seconds.

Renne snapped out of her epiphany and responded to Swayde, clearing her throat first. "I, uh...I have to go." Renne said quickly and pressed the end call button, then slammed her phone down on the table before Swayde could say anything else.

Standing up from her chair, Renne quickly began packing up all her wedding papers, brochures, and pamphlets and stuffed them into her organized three ring binder. Looking over to her right, Renne saw her laptop open to the internet page that she was looking at for their caters. Slowly oscillating her head back to the left, Renne looked at all the papers strewn across the hardwood table top. Only then did she realize that the "dream" wedding she had been planning wasn't her and Matt's wedding at all...it was the wedding that she had always dreamed of for her and Swayde.

Trying to get that thought out of her head, Renne quickly slammed her laptop shut and stared down at the closed binder that was labeled "Matt and Reagan's Wedding" Just then, Matt walked in, interrupting her thoughts. "Hey, baby. How's the plannin' coming along?" He asked, walking up beside Renne and wrapping an arm around her waist. He planted a kiss on her temple.

"Matt...we need to talk..." Renne said and turned around quickly to face Matt. Stepping back, his arm fell from her waist. This couldn't wait any longer.

"Honey...I told you, money doesn't matter. You choose whatever you want. It's your day, and I want it to be perfect for you." Matt grinned, tucking his hands into his jeans pockets.

"That's not what I'm concerned about..." Renne started, fingering her engagement ring.

Matt's smile was gone. "Then what is it?"

"Swayde just called and...I just truly realized something for the first time..." Renne struggled to find the words. "This wedding...it's beautiful...it's what I have always dreamed of...but it's not our wedding...it's not the wedding I dreamed of for us..."

"Help me out here, Renne. I can't read your mind, what are you sayin'?" Matt's eyebrows were pushed together in confusion.

"I...I don't know..." Renne replied, her eyebrows furrowed. Truth is, she knew what she wanted to say, she just couldn't find the words or the heart to say it.

"Do you love him?" Matt asked, his jaw clenched. His tone and expression on his face made Renne think he already knew the answer. "Do you really love him?"

"Love who?" Renne asked, her eyebrows still pushed together.

"Swayde. Just tell me, Renne." His hands were on his hips.

She was taken aback by Matt's loaded question. "Well I...I love you...you know that..." Renne said, beating around the bush.

"It's a simple question, Renne. Do. You. Love. Swayde?"

"That's not really a simple question, Matt."

"Just answer me!" Matt shouted. Renne hated it when he yelled at her.

She knew she had to tell him the truth. He wouldn't like the answer, but it was better to get it out there now, then to find out later, like after the wedding happened, that Renne had lied to Matt. "Yes." She finally said. Her voice was hoarse and barely audible. Renne felt her eyes tear up as she saw the look on Matt's face.

Now it was Matt's eyes who teared up. Taking in a sharp breath, he sniffed and set his jaw firm again, his anger returning. "I knew it. I could hear it in your voice the first day you told me about him, and it was evident whenever y'all were together, but I never thought you would actually admit it." He turned to go, but quickly turned back around, facing Renne with a saddened look. "So who's it gonna be? If you love him, and you say you love me...who are you goin' to choose at the end if the day? Because you can't love two people. It doesn't work like that, Renne. And you're engaged to me, so I would think that I have the advantage."

Renne couldn't answer. Her heart was screaming Swayde, but her mind was telling her to stay with Matt since, he was right, he was the one she was engaged to. Enough was enough, however. Love triangles never end up well; someone always gets hurt.

Renne must have been silent longer then she thought because Matt said quietly, "Well, I reckon I have my answer." He walked away without another word, or glance at Renne.

Neither of them had said "It's over," but they both knew it was. There was no going back. Renne was finally free from Matt.
