《Heartbreak Town (COMPLETED)》Chapter Thirty Six

Renne had just transferred the scrambled eggs she made from the skillet into a glass bowl when she heard the back door opened, slamming shut on it's own. Looking over her shoulder, Renne saw Matt walking into the house.
"Babe, I am so sorry for last night." Was the first thing Matt said, shaking his head as he crossed the kitchen, standing next to Renne.
"It's alright. Where did you stay last night?" Renne asked, flipping over the hash browns she had cooking on the stove.
"At a friend's house. Are you still upset at me?" Matt asked, leaning against the counter top, watching Renne.
"No, honey, why would I be mad?" Renne said sarcastically, faking a smile.
"Just wondering." Matt's gaze was distracted by the sight of his phone on the kitchen island. "Ahh, here it is. I was lookin' for my phone. Did anyone call?" Matt picked up his phone, checking the notifications.
"I wouldn't know. I went back to bed right after you left." Renne lied, focusing on her cooking.
"I'll be right back." Matt dialed a number, holding the phone up to his ear, about to walk out of the kitchen.
"No, you aren't goin' anywhere." Renne stood her ground, turning to face Matt. This was not at all how she had planned this conversation to go, but she couldn't wait any longer.
Matt immediately pulled the phone down from his ear, hanging up the call to focus on Renne. "What?"
Renne abandoned her spot at the stove to look at Matt. "You are goin' to stay here and tell me exactly what is goin' on with you and 'Chris.' By the way, that was smooth...disguising her name as a guy's in your phone. I'm assuming her real name is Christina, but you entered it as Chris into your phone so I wouldn't suspect anything. Am I right?" Renne was furious, but it was only seven in the morning; the last thing she wanted to do was fight with Matt.
Matt stood speechless in the middle of the large kitchen. His mouth opened and closed before staying closed as he just gave Renne a look. "How did you..." He couldn't form a question.
"I lied. I didn't go to bed right after you stormed out. I stayed up the entire night tryin' to figure out why you have been lyin' to me, and tryin' to figure out about how to confront you about Chris. I admit, I searched through your phone last night." Renne placed both of her hands on the kitchen island, staring down a very guilty looking Matt who stood directly across from her.
"Come on, Renne, don't do this. Where is the trust?" Matt asked, acting like he didn't do anything wrong.

"That flew out the window the day you admitted you cheated on me. But you know what? I believed you, Matt. I honestly thought I could trust you, that you had changed, but now I see I was wrong." She spun around, going back to making breakfast. Inside, she was boiling with anger, but she didn't want to let it erupt.
Matt took in a breath. "Renne, I'm not cheating on you anymore. Honestly, that stopped before I proposed to you." Matt's voice was quieter as he stood next to his fiance.
"Then why are you still talkin' to Christina?" She doled out a serving size of food on each of their plates, not about to let her hard work in the kitchen go to waste.
He let out a sigh, running a hand over his face. "It's complicated, Renne."
"I don't think it's complicated. You call her every night at five and she calls you every morning at 2. Sounds to me like there is still something goin' on there." Renne set the dirty skillets in the sink, turning to grab the condiments from the fridge.
"She is a waitress in town, so I call her whenever she leaves to go to her shift, and she calls me around 2am when she gets off." Matt explained, as if that clarified anything.
"You would never wake up to answer my calls if I called you at two in the morning." Renne mumbled in response, slamming the silverware drawer shut after grabbing two forks.
"Renne, please..." Matt pleaded.
She spun around to look into the eyes of the man she couldn't stand to be around right now. "Just explain to me why you are still talkin' to her!" Renne shouted.
"Because she is pregnant with my child!" Matt snapped, shouting back, spreading his arms out.
Renne's breath hitched. "She's...what?" She was praying she just heard Matt wrong, but she knew she didn't.
Tears began to form in Matt's eyes, realizing how badly he messed up. "She is pregnant with my child. We are tryin' to figure out what to do. Obviously, she's goin' to have the kid, but we are tryin' to figure out the logistics. Where she is goin' to live, how often I will get to see my kid, everything. We are tryin' to get it all figured out."
Absolutely taken back by the news, Renne sat down on one of the bar stools in the kitchen. "So, you cheated on me, slept with her because I won't because I'm waitin' for marriage, got her pregnant, and now you want to be fully active in her life." She said each sentence as if she was counting the reasons on her fingers. With her hands still pressed against each other, Renne looked at Matt. "How am I supposed to be okay with all of that? How am I supposed to be okay with the fact that my soon to be husband is having a child with another woman? And on top of it all, I am goin' to be a step mother to your child. The child of the woman you cheated on me with! I..." She couldn't wrap her head around all of this.

Matt walked forward, grabbing Renne's hands. "That's the problem. I know you are never goin' to be okay with this. I don't expect you to be okay with it...but baby, I need you to try. I can't lose you again. I don't know how this will affect us, but I know we can make it work."
Renne began to put two and two together. "Did you only propose to me because you were hopin' it would change how I reacted when I found out?"
Matt's eyebrows pushed together as he pulled his hands back. "What? No. Not at all. Renne, I asked you to marry me because I love you, and I want to spend the rest of our lives with you."
Renne stood up from the chair with a scoff, staring at Matt. "I'm sorry, but I need some time to process all of this." Turning, she walked out of the kitchen and straight up to her bedroom.
Beginning to feel herself hyperventilate like she always did before she had a panic attack, Renne knew she needed something to calm herself. Grabbing her phone from her back pocket, Renne dialed the number of the only person who could help her.

Swayde picked up the phone on the third ring. "Reagan?"
"Swayde..." Renne breathed out in a chuckle. Just hearing his voice say her name had already made her calm down some. She took in a shaky breath as she tried to form a sentence.
"Something wrong?"
"It's Matt." Renne started; the second she said his name, she heard Swayde sigh, but she continued on regardless. "I found out last night that he is still talkin' to the girl that he cheated on me with, but it gets worse...the reason he is still talkin' to her is because she is pregnant...with his kid! I don't know how to react to all of this. I am goin' to be married to a man that is havin' a child with another woman. Swayde, please help me, I don't know what to do."
"Reggie, I told you he was bad news. I knew it since that first day you told me about him. I'm sorry, but I have tried tellin' you time and time again that something like this would happen. He is just goin' to keep hurtin' you. You can't trust him, Reagan."
Surprised by Swayde's uncharacteristically blunt response, Renne hesitated with her reply. "Swayde, I...I called you because you said you would always be there for me, and I thought you would be able to help me and comfort me, not make me feel worse."
Swayde let out a chuckle groan. "Oh, I'm sorry. How am I supposed to comfort you, exactly right now? Tell you that I am happy y'all are havin' problems already because that means you might get to finally see him for who he really is? No, I'm not goin' to say that because I am being a good friend here."
"Wow. I didn't realize that you could be so cruel to me, Swayde." Renne let her hand slap her thigh in disgusted amazement. "I'm talkin' to the love of my my life about my fiance, so clearly things are messed up. But, why do I even care? I mean I already agreed to marrying Matt, and I'm not one to break promises. This incident will just make us stronger in the long run."
Swayde chuckled. "You just called me the love of your life." He ignored everything else she had said.
Renne hadn't even noticed that she slipped up until Swayde had mentioned it. "Former. Former love of my life. Matt is the one I'm marrying. I love him."
"Have you realized that you have never once said that you are in love with Matt? You've only said that you love him. There is a difference. Reggie, when are you goin' to see it?"
"Never, Swayde. Because I engaged to Matt, so clearly I love him." She had replied after a few seconds of hesitation. This was not at all how she had envisioned this call going. Instead of helping her feel better, it was just making things worse.
"Did this past month that we spent together not mean anythin' to you at all?" There was no frustration left in Swayde's deep, drawled voice. Frustration was replaced with regret, concern.
Renne let out a sigh. "Forget I even called you. Clearly we can't be as close of friends if you can't get over our past, Swayde. Goodbye." She gave the cold goodbye before hanging up her phone, not even giving Swayde a second to reply.
Furious with denial about her feelings, Renne did the only thing that she thought was logical in the moment. Walking downstairs, Renne scanned the rooms for Matt, only to see him still in the kitchen. Walking right up to him, Renne grabbed his face in both of her hands, kissing him soundly on the lips. Pulling back, she said with a wry smile, "Let's get married."

Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.
