《Heartbreak Town (COMPLETED)》Chapter Thirty Five

"Home sweet home..." Renne mumbled to herself as her truck rumbled down her driveway at her ranch back in Montana.

"Need help carryin' in anything?" Matt asked, walking to Renne's truck before she could even get out of the cab.

Renne hopped down from her truck, walking past Matt, and to the passenger side of her truck. "I think I got it. I'm too tired to deal with all of it tonight, so I think I will just take in my clothes and the food, and leave everything else for the morning."

"Alright, well if you don't need help, I am goin' to go inside and start unpacking. Holler if you need me." Matt turned, walking inside empty handed.

Shaking her head because she expected Matt to see that she was being partially sarcastic when she said she didn't need help, Renne grabbed the large cooler full of casseroles and meals. Carrying it in the house, Renne let it slam down hard on the counter top when she saw that Matt wasn't in fact unpacking stuff; he was sitting on the couch with a sports game on. Knowing that Matt wasn't the kind of guy to help even when someone says they don't need it, Renne walked back out to her truck, knowing she couldn't be mad at him.

After two more trips from the truck to the house, Renne had successfully hauled all of her suitcases inside, and up to her bedroom. Heading back down the stairs, she made her way into the kitchen to put the cold food away.

As she was taking a pie out of the cooler, Renne felt two arms slowly creep around her waist. "You wanna know something?" Matt asked Renne after dropping a kiss on her neck.

"What?" Renne asked, freeing herself from Matt's arms so she could put the food in the fridge.

"I cannot wait to marry you. Seriously, I mean we already have a house, all of our finances figured out, all the property with the barns and livestock. Baby, we are set. All we have to do is tie the knot and live happily ever after." Matt was smiling at Renne as she worked her way around the kitchen, tidying up. There were dishes in the sink, a newspaper sprawled across the kitchen table, some boxes of leftovers in the fridge. It made Renne wonder if someone had been staying in her house while she was gone.

"Yeah, I'm excited, too." Renne said, tiredly. "Did someone stay in our house while I was gone?" She changed the subject, grabbing a beer bottle from the fridge that was not the kind that Matt drank.

"Uh, no..." Matt started, a guilty look all over his face. "No, those are my buddy's beers. He came over and stayed for a night last week. And all of those carry out boxes are old, like from a few weeks ago. Sorry, I meant to clean them out before I came down and saw you."

"It's fine. I'll deal with it tomorrow." Renne added to her growing to do list. She hadn't even been home for an hour and she was already overwhelmed with what all needed done.

Matt crossed the kitchen to embrace Renne again. "What's wrong?" He leaned forward, pressing his lips against hers when she didn't reply. "Hmm? Are you not happy to be back?"

Renne looked up into Matt's brown eyes. She missed being back, but she was unaware how much work on the ranch had been abandoned since she left. For as long as she could remember, Renne was always a very neat and tidy, organized person, so to see her house messy stressed her out. "I'm just exhausted is all."

"Why don't we go to bed then? I will help you clean up everything in the morning." Matt offered, not ready to take no as an answer.

"Okay." Renne backed down, slipping away from Matt to make her way up to their bedroom. Once upstairs, Renne grabbed her pajamas, heading to the bathroom to change and brush her teeth.

After she was all ready for bed, Renne walked back into the bedroom to see Matt already in bed, in just pajama bottoms and no shirt. He was sitting back against the headboard, texting.

"Hey, beautiful." Matt smiled when Renne laid down in bed next to him.

"Hey. Thanks for making the bed." She rolled over so she was facing Matt.

Matt put his phone down to sink under the sheets, wrapping Renne up in his arms. "You're welcome. Do you have any idea how much I missed you?" His finger traced circles on Renne's shoulder.

"I missed you, too." Renne mumbled, ready to fall asleep.

"Well, what day do you want to become Mrs. Ramon? Have you thought of a date for the wedding?" Matt, who was clearly wide awake, asked.

"I don't know yet. Let's talk tomorrow." Her eyes were closed, her voice exhausted.

"Okay. I love you, babe." Matt gave Renne a loving squeeze.

Already, Renne was fast asleep.

Renne rolled over, her arm reaching for Matt, but it only hit the sheets on the bed. Opening her eyes, Renne saw that the bedroom door was open, and the light was on in the hallway. In the distance, Renne could hear Matt's voice talking to someone. It seemed like he was talking on the phone; whoever he was talking to, it was a heated conversation.

Renne and Matt had been back in Montana for a week now, and almost every night, Matt had woken up to take a phone call from someone. Tonight was the last night that Renne would allow it to wake her up, however. Slipping out of bed, she peeked up at the clock to see it read 2:27. With a sigh, Renne quietly slipped out of the bedroom, standing on the landing at the top of the stairs that overlooked the living room. Down below, Renne could see Matt talking on the phone, using his hands for expression. She only picked up bits and pieces of the conversation because Matt was pacing throughout the house, but based on Matt's tone of voice, he was definitely upset at whomever he was talking to.

Being curious, but also worried, Renne started down the stairs to attempt eavesdropping. The longer she listened to Matt's conversation, the more intrigued she became. Who on earth would be calling after two in the morning? She had to find out.

Taking a deep breath, Renne made her way downstairs, acting like she was getting a drink of water in the kitchen, where Matt had just walked out of. He still didn't know that Renne was downstairs, listening to every word he was saying.

"Well, what are we goin' to do about it?" Matt asked the person on the phone, worriedly. "No, I have no clue how I am goin' to tell Renne. I...I don't know. I'm going to-" Matt entered back into the kitchen, practically jumping when he saw Renne standing there, sipping a glass of water. "Chris, I'm goin' to have to call you back." Matt said, hanging up his phone and walking over to Renne. "Babe, what are you doin' up?" He grabbed himself a glass from the cupboard. His jaw was set firm, telling Renne that the phone call had worried him, making him upset.

"I noticed you weren't in bed, and woke up to see what was wrong. Who was that on the phone?"

"It was Chris." Matt's jaw was still clenched; he was hiding something.

"Okay. And who is Chris?" Renne folded her arm over her stomach, holding her glass with the other.

"Just a friend." Matt's voice was short as he took a gulp of water, setting the empty glass into the dishwasher.

"What did he want? What were you not sure how to tell me?" Renne moved so she wasn't in Matt's way.

"Don't worry about it. Let's go back to bed." Matt turned to walk away, but Renne pulled him back.

"We aren't going back to bed until you tell me what is wrong. Chris has called you every day this past week, and it's always at the same time, and you always get really upset afterwards. Tell me what is happening." Renne was geniunely worried, but something about Matt's story wasn't adding up.

"Renne, there are some things that you don't need to know. Stay out of it." Matt's voice said angrily, pointing a finger at Renne. He walked out of the kitchen, with Renne hot on his heels.

"Matt, we are engaged. Couples who are engaged are supposed to tell each other everything." Matt was walking through their large house, to the foyer. "How are we goin' to make this work if you won't even tell me what the heck is goin' on?!" Renne shouted, her arms out wide.

"Renne, you need to stop. Mind your own business." Matt stood up from his seat on the bench where he was putting on his cowboy boots. Since he was shirtless, Matt grabbed a hoodie that was hanging up on the rack by the wall, slipping it over his head.

"Where do you think you are goin'?" Renne watched Matt walk to the door.

"Out. I'll be back tomorrow." After grabbing his keys off their hook, Matt loudly slammed the door shut behind him after he walked out.

Groaning, Renne stomped her back through the house. She was passing through the kitchen when something on the large kitchen island caught her eye. Turning, Renne saw it was Matt's phone. Knowing what she was about to do was wrong, but demanding answers, Renne took Matt's phone in her hand.

No longer feeling tired, Renne sat down on one of the bar stools in the kitchen, holding Matt's phone in her hand. "God, please forgive me for my lack of trust." Renne prayed, unlocking Matt's phone, surprised he hadn't changed the password.

Unsure where to start, Renne looked at the app that was already open on his phone: the call log. There were a few received calls from the feed store, the bank, Renne, the pizza place, and places like that. However, the majority of the calls were from a caller named "Chris K." Each call received were around the same time every day; right around 5pm. Then, almost every morning for the past month, Matt had called Chris K at around 2am. There was something fishy about the call log.

Having never done this kind of thing before, Renne didn't know where else to look on Matt's phone. More so, she didn't know what she was lookin' for. Butterflies rose in Renne's stomach as she opened the messages app, hoping there was nothing fishy there so she could forgive Matt and go to bed, but just as Renne opened the app, a new text message came in. It was from Chris K.

"Babe, please call me back as soon as you can. We need to talk about this." The text read.

Renne was taken by surprise at the text. Chris K was a female?! She couldn't believe it. There was no way that this could get worse. Actually, there was a way. Renne was reading it. Chris and Matt had been texting every day for over a month. Recently, however, ever since Matt had come down to see Renne in Wyoming, Matt hadn't been replying as often. There was a text that Chris had sent, asking when Matt was going to "come see" her next, and Matt had replied, telling her never again because he had "just proposed to Renne. She is the love of my life, and we are gettin' married. She knows about us, but it all needs to stop. Now." Clearly, "it" hadn't stopped because the two were still communicating daily.

Absolutely mind blown and heartbroken, Renne stared at the screen, trying to take deep breaths to calm herself, but only found herself getting more and more upset. Something in Renne snapped when she read that most recent text again. Chris had called Matt "babe," so obviously there was something else still going on between them, even though Matt flirting back had stopped after he proposed to Renne.

Yet another text came in just then. "Matt, please. We need to talk about how to tell your fiance. She needs to know."

That was the last string for Renne. She wanted to text Chris back, going off on her, blocking her number from Matt's phone, but she knew that would only prove Chris was winning. So, Renne did the next best thing. She locked Matt's phone, slamming it down hard on the counter top, angling it just like it was when Matt left it.

Renne was absolutely furious. She wanted Matt to come home so that she could yell at him, demanding answers from him, but she would just have to wait for the morning.

Tossing and turning for the rest of the night, unable to fall asleep because she was so angry, Renne decided to finally roll out of bed at 5am when Matt's clock alarm went off beside the bed. Shutting it off, Renne began praying, something she hadn't stopped doing all night.

Taking a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and her undergarments to the bathroom, Renne got herself ready for the day. Looking up into the mirror after brushing her teeth, Renne saw how dark the circles were becoming around her eyes. Every part of her was exhausted. These past two weeks had been two of the hardest for her, and she could only pray when they were going to get better.

Pulling her hair back into a pony tail, Renne made her way downstairs to start breakfast, knowing Matt would be home soon to start chores. After being up all night, she had comprised an entire speech she would give Matt the second he walked through the door. And boy, was she prepared.
