《Crossroads (Lesbian Stories)(gxg)》Chapter 42: Graduation

Christy didn't want anything to do with me.
Understandable.
I cheated on her twice with the same guy.
I don't know what's wrong with me.
I love Christy with my whole being but that argument just triggered something that set me off. For some reason, I just went running straight to Jesse. I don't even like him like that.
The only thought that lingers in my mind is "why did I do that?" all day and all night.
I lay awake all night thinking about Christy's face when she saw Jesse and I together in bed and her face of betrayal-once again. It was the second time that I cheated on her.
It's whatever now. I guess.
We've each spent the rest of our high school careers away from each other. Well with her avoiding me as much as possible.
She was also planning to announce her commitment to a college during graduation. Something I doubt she wanted to do but the school probably made her wait to announce it then since she already prolonged the process then enough.
I, on the other hand, already committed. A little while after our fallout I decided to, since the attention was already on me, I didn't want to draw even more attention when the whole drama blew over.
UCLA commit on a full ride scholarship.
Not bad.
The graduation ceremony was like any other ceremony. The speeches, the presentation, a musical performances, then the calling of the graduates. It was long and boring, it dragged on for two hours just to get the regular stuff out of the way.
Since our school was known for creating athletes who go to play in college, we always had a ceremony during graduation with all the athletes. They would call up each athlete one by one, state the college they were attending, which sport they played, and however much money they received from the school along with a medal of recognition.
As the tradition goes, they let the less popular sport athletes be called first, golf, tennis, lacrosse, water polo and swimming were out of the way with a mere six athletes in total-one for each sport basically.
Then the football players, just a group of four guys who were all linebackers committed to colleges ranging from Ohio State, Auburn, Baylor, and Oregon State.
"Boys soccer with the lone prospect, Jesse Thompson. He is headed to Duke with a full scholarship." The announcer said and the crowd cheered wildly for him.
"Girls soccer. We have two girls. Natalie Toy who will be attending UC Berkeley on a full scholarship. Then we have Kayla Owens who will be attending UCLA with a full scholarship as well."

I walked up onto the stage with the crowd cheering slightly softer than they did for everyone else. Natalie offered me a soft smile and then faced forward.
Poor Natalie. She played both soccer and basketball and was caught between us when Christy and I broke up. She was friends with both of us and an exceptional player for both sports. I think it was definitely a surprise for everyone when she announced she was going to play soccer in college rather than basketball. I know Christy would've loved playing against Natalie in college but now that wasn't a possibility.
"And now, the moment we have all been waiting for." The announcer said with a booming voice. "Could I get a drum roll please?"
The crowd started stomping their feet and you could literally feel the whole building shake. There were tons of reporters and sports analysts attending the graduation since they wanted the news as soon as possible. I even heard that the school contacted the college Christy committed to so they could send a rep over for a photo op.
I was excited to hear where Christy committed to also. Wherever she goes, I'll be proud of her and continue to love and support her, even if she doesn't do the same for me.
My bet that was she probably committed to UConn or Stanford, a college that's highly competitive in the basketball world.
"Kayla Johnson, the mere five foot three guard, will be attending..." The announcer paushed for a moment to bring suspense and everyone was literally on the edge of their seats.
"UCLA!"
Everyone was in shock but the crowd still cheered loudly and roared with excitement as Christy walked up on stage with a smile on her face.
"-full -ship!" The announcer was being cut off by the crowd.
Me? How did I feel? I was in complete shock. The reason why we broke up in the first place was because we argued over whether Christy should commit to UCLA. Was this some sort of sick way for her to get back at me? To torture me for another four years?
I took a deep breath and calmed myself down. Gotta support Christy, gotta support Christy.
She took her spot next to me and gave me a soft smile before facing forward and not looking at me for the rest of the ceremony.
They mentioned the success of the sports teams this year, with both girls soccer and basketball winning the championship and leaving its mark on history for years to come.

Then we snapped a few photos and the graduation ceremony was over.
My family attended and it was probably one of the first times my mom, dad, brother, and Margaret all were at the same time for an event of mine. We snapped a few photos together and my parents congratulated me and took off for a meeting or conference or whatever. I didn't really care, I was used to my parents not being apart of my life.
Then I saw them. Christy's family posing for a photo, all laughing and having fun with each other. It was all of them, Maddie, Charlotte, Steph, and Katelyn. Christy was the only one without a girlfriend but seemed unbothered by it, there were already five girls who loved her immensely there.
I thought about how it would've been like if we were still together and I would be part of that group, having fun and supporting the girl we all love.
Suddenly a man in a blue jacket taps me. "Excuse me Ms. Owens, I'm a UCLA rep and I was wondering if we could conduct an interview back in the venue? We set up a backdrop and we have a change of clothes for you."
"Of course sir." I walked with him back to the venue where we had the graduation and went backstage and sure enough, there was a backdrop with the UCLA logos, a table, and two microphones on the table. There were reporters sitting in the seats and they were already snapping photos when I entered the room.
They led me into a changing room where a UCLA women's soccer jacket waited for me along with a pair of matching black sweats with the UCLA logo on it. I changed into it quickly and left my things in the dressing room, bringing only my phone along.
When I exited, I saw that Christy was sitting at the table, wearing a similar jacket that had "UCLA basketball" on it.
Of course. It was a dual interview.
I took a seat next to Christy and the reporters jumped right in.
"Christy, what took the process of signing to a college so long? Why hide it so long? Was this mutual between you and the school? " A reporter with a notepad asked.
"Uh well I just wanted to make sure that I made the right choice and that the school I chose had everything I liked. Nothing worse than transferring mid-season and then having to red shirt. It was more of the school's idea." She said into the mic.
"Hi this question is for Kayla." A male reporter with an iPhone stood up and it seemed like he was recording on it. "What made you choose UCLA?"
An easy question, no biggie. "I chose UCLA since it is a school I've wanted to play for ever since I was young. I also feel that my skills would be a good addition to the team and I certainly hope that they do."
Another reporter stood right up after I finished speaking. "This question is for both of you. Hailing from the same school and city, do you feel like you two will have a stronger bond attending the same college?"
I didn't know what to answer for this question since it was so out of the blue and obviously we weren't going to be with each other because of our history.
"If our schedules allow it then we shall see how it goes." Christy said calmly.
"Agreed. Being a first year student athlete in college will take a lot of adjustment." I stuttered.
A reporter stood up again. "There has been rumors that you two had some issues regarding each other. Any comment on that?"
Oh god. They know. How do they know??! What should I say?
"As a former high school student of less than 30 minutes ago," the crowd of reporters chuckled at that comment, "I believe that information given to each other is like a game of telephone. Rumors are simply rumors. Kayla and I are in the same recruiting class for UCLA and supposedly we do have "issues" with each other, we must put them aside and move on." Christy said confidentiality without missing beat.
"I do agree with Christy. It is time for us to each our own, focus on our athletic careers. Christy with basketball, and me with soccer."
"Well that's all the time we have folks." The man in the blue jacket who tapped me earlier said. "We have time for some photos and we must go."
We both stood up and stood next to each other, but we were both cautious to not touch one another.
"Could you guys move in closer so you guys are touching? Sorry the gap looks weird." A photographer said.
Christy sighed before moving closer to me, our hands touching for the first time since the incident.
