Uncle Henry helped you bring in your suitcases to the rackety farmhouse in the middle of Kansas plain. Dorothy was off somewhere with Toto, allowing you some time to catch up with your aunt and uncle that you missed desperately.
It's been ten years since they moved out here away from the city. From what your parents told you, you were close to them both as a child. You were too little to remember. All you remembered was Dorothy, oh how excited you were to see her again.
"You should have all that you need. Dorothy's got quite a bit." Uncle Henry puffed from his pipe.
"Thank you Uncle Henry."
He began to walk out the bedroom door but stopped suddenly and turned back to you, "forgot to warn ya but we have three men working with us. Zeke is the oldest, kinda bald on the head. Hickory is 30 and Hunk is the youngest, close to twenty and he's the skinniest and tallest. Don't be alarmed if you see them."
"Thank you for the heads up."
He walked away leaving you to unpack. You heard something hit the window hard, nearly scaring you half to death. You moved closer to get a better look. Three men— surely the men Henry warned you about were outside throwing around a ball. It must've hit your window by mistake. They separated and went back to work which felt like a safe time to get some fresh Kansas air.
You opened the window and continued to unpack.

Dorothy had returned home from her adventure in the field with her trusty Toto. She was surprised to see you sleeping in the spare mattress in her room. She wanted to wake you, but decided against it. You'll have the whole summer to catch up.

"Hiya Dorothy," Hunk greeted, scaring the girl.
"Oh Hunk, you need to give a warning when you're around." She slowly closed the door behind her, stepping into the hallway with the tall man.
"You've let me in your room many a time before, why not now?"
"My cousin is in town for the summer and she's sleeping."
"Sleeping? At this time of day? What is she a child?"
"She's eighteen, not too far from you in age." Hunk rubbed the back of his neck.
You groaned and rolled over in the mattress. In reality you were half asleep and thanks to the gap between the door and wall you got a good look at this Hunk. He was in fact skinny and had a handsome face, even with dirt smears.
He had a non-traditional charm to him. He caught your gaze and you quickly closed your eyes again. You heard a distant chuckle.

After dinner, you found yourself walking around the farm. Thanks to your nap earlier you had a decent amount of energy. You found a pile of hay behind the barn and there laid Hunk by his lonesome self. He was fiddling with strands while looking at the night sky.
You accidentally stepped on a twig, making him jump. Everyone seemed so jumpy today.
"I didn't mean to scare you," he met your gaze and a look of relief washed over his face.
"Oh... it's fine," his hair was neatly brushed, some short strands falling on his forehead. He looked down at your clothes, you weren't dressed like Dorothy.
You wore nicer clothes, surely something Hunk or other people out here have ever seen before. The women in the country dressed for farm work, where you were from the city and were used to a far different form of life, not that either were bad.

"May I sit with you?" He nodded, finding himself struggling with words. You giggled.
You sat down on the stack next to him and carefully laid down and gazed at the stars.
"The sky sure is pretty out here."
"Where are you from?"
"New York, it's quite wonderful, actually. But I haven't been out here to the country since childhood and thought it'd be nice to reconnect with Uncle Henry and Auntie Em, and Dorothy. Where are you from, Hunk?"
"Kansas, just a different part. Not too far from here though. My folks had a farm until they couldn't run it anymore. I ran into Henry in town and he offered me a job. See, we knew each other briefly as we're both in the farm business, but it's like we're family now. What do your parents do?"
"My dad's a janitor and my mom's a seamstress. She sewed this dress for me as a matter of fact."
"It sure is beautiful. Ma never wore anything like that." You chuckled.
"Thank you. If I lived out here I don't think I'd dress like this, these dresses aren't designed for getting dirty. It's silly of me to have packed them but they're all I had!" He laughed, he had a great laugh and a contagious smile. He seemed almost shy.
He looked up to the sky again, as did you. A wave of silence washed over you but you didn't mind, you had a brief introduction to one another. You felt it start to get late and you knew it was time to go to sleep. All you had to do was sneak into the home and hope to not step on any squeaky floorboards.
"It's getting late, I think I should call it a night." you successfully climbed down the haystack and dusted your skirt off.
"Let me walk you home." He got down too and walked you to the front door.
"Thank you, this was a fun night."
"I thought so. I guess I'll see you around tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow," he gazed at your lips and slowly leaned in, pressing a delicate kiss with his soft lips.
"Your lips are soft." You complimented, making his cheeks turn a shade of pink.
"Thank you," you returned a gentle kiss to his lips.
"Goodnight Hunk."
"Goodnight y/n."
