《The Players BestFriend》Chapter 27

"I'm going to the store. Do you need anything?" I asked my dad.

Today, my dad is off of work so I get to spend the whole day with him. This is rare so I want us to spend every minute of the day together. Well besides right now. My dad is horrible at shopping. My mom and I were always the ones buying groceries.

"Get some vanilla ice cream and 2 bottles of coke. Oh and some M&M's. Maybe some chocolate chips too."

"I'm guessing we're gonna watch movies and eat ice cream all day?"

"Yepp. So cancel any plans you have with friends. This is gonna be a father-daughter day." He smiled.

Every time my dad has a day off, we watch movies, eat junk food, and sometimes we even just sit on the couch and talk to each other about everything that's going on in our lives. I really cherish those days.

"I did that yesterday when you told me you're off today. Brooklyn understood but Hailey wanted to come over still. I told her I needed to spend some quality time with my daddy."

I can't tell him about Ezra. He would freak out and threaten to hurt him if we didn't break up. Ezra knew I didn't get to spend much time with my dad, but he still thought we should spend our first full day of being a couple together. I understand where he's coming from, but I need to be with my dad. You never know when tragedy can strike.

"I'll be back in an hour or so. If you need anything else, just text me. Love you daddy." I stated, giving him a kiss on the cheek and going out to my truck.

On the way to Kroger's, "Ain't It Fun" by Paramore came on the radio. This song is a little cruel, but it's reality. When things get tough, don't go crying to your momma. That's just life. You need to get used to it.

I parked my truck and headed inside. As soon as I walked in, I could smell an ocean breeze. I looked to my right, and sure enough, some woman was selling ocean breeze scented candles. They looked homemade.

"Would you like to purchase a candle? The money will be donated to the children's hospital for the patients that can't really afford their bill."

"I would love to! How much are they?" I asked the kind lady.

"The small ones are $2 and the large ones are $5."

"I want 3 small ones and 1 large one please."

"Thank you so much! The kids will really appreciate your purchase." She stated while gently wrapping the candles in gift tissue paper.

"Well I wish I could help more but I kind of need to buy groceries. If I didn't, I would have just given you all of my money." I smiled.

"Wow! You are so kind and generous! I wish there was more people like you out in this delirious world."

"Thank you." I giggled. "I hope you get enough money to pay for some bills." I said.

I wish I could do more. Those kids need help and if they can't afford the bill, they won't be able to get the help they so desperately need.

I bought everything on my list and now it's time to check out. The man at the register kept looking at me with a creepy smile. I felt uncomfortable so I tried to switch to another check out line, but someone else beat me to it.

"I can check you out. It's no problem." The creep disgustingly said.

"Uh.... Okay." I stated, walking back to his line.

"So, how old are you?" He asked.

"Is that any of your business?"

"No, but I was just asking a simple question. You don't have to answer. I'm told to try and strike up a conversation with my customers." He stated, a little anger evident in his voice.

"Oh." I said, feeling a little guilty. "I'm 17."

He smiled. "What a coincidence, I am too."

"Cool." I said awkwardly.

"Do you go to high school or are you in college?"

"I'm still in high school. It's my senior year."

"Mine too. What school do you attend?"

"Jefferson High."

"My cousin goes to that school. You might know him."

"Who?" I asked, curious.

"Austen Presley."

"Yeah, I guess you could say I know him." I sighed. I thought he looked like Austen.

"He's a jerk. Never have liked him. My mom keeps trying to force us into being friends, but if I get near him, I get the urge to bash his face in."

I laughed. "Yeah me too."

"Your total is $209.50."

I paid him and watched as the bag boy put my groceries into the buggy.

"Here is your .50 cents and receipt. Make sure you read the bottom for details about relieving stress. It'll come in handy."

"Thank you. Have a nice day." I told the funny cashier.

I sat in the truck while the bag boy put all of the groceries in the back. I would have helped, but I'm too lazy. It's his job anyways. I looked at the receipt and started laughing.

'If you call me, we can talk about our hatred towards Austen. That will help you relax a little.'

And below that was his name and number.

I most likely won't be calling him. If he was about a month earlier, I probably would have. He seems pretty cool.

On the drive back home, "Sing" by Ed Sheeran came on. This song is amazing.

"I need you darling come on set the tone.

If you feel your fallin won't you let me

know oh oh oh." I belted the chorus out.

When it said louder, I automatically sung louder. Ed is cute in his own way. He has a great personality and I love his hair. His voice is unique.

The song ended and I turned off the radio. Sometimes, silence is needed. I kept thinking about the kids at the children's hospital. I want to help them so much. Maybe I can figure something out.

5 minutes later, I reached my house. I parked my truck and headed inside to get help with the groceries.

"Dad! I'm home!" I yell as I walk in.

"Just got in the shower! I'll be done in about 20 minutes if you can wait!"

"No. It's okay. I've got stuff that needs to be put in the freezer and fridge. I'll just do it myself." I yell back.

"You can ask our neighbors son to help. I've heard he's nice and strong." I laughed.

"Yeah okay."

Ezra's gonna be happy about this. He gets to see me after all.

I walk over to his house and softly knocked on the door.

"Hey darling. Come on in. Ezra's still asleep in his room if you wanna go wake him up." His mom greets me.

I smile and walk off to his room. Should I scare him or be gentle about it? I'll go with the latter part.

I walk in his room and see him peacefully sleeping on his bed. He's cuddled up with his blanket. I slowly slip under the covers beside him and turn my body towards his.

I watch him sleep for the next minute or so before I decide it's time to wake him up. I lift his arm up and put it around my waist. I lay on my back and rest my head on his shoulder. This doesn't wake him up so I decide to kiss his cheek. When that doesn't work, I kiss his lips. This time, I got a reaction. He slightly opened his eyes, and once he realized it was me, he started kissing me back. He flipped me over his body so I'm laying underneath him. He stops the kiss and just looks at me.

"What? Is there something on my face?" I ask, confused.

"No. You're just beautiful. I'd love to wake up like this every morning." He smiled.

"I bet you would." I chuckled.

"Why are you here? I thought today was 'Father-Daughter day'."

"It is but I had to go buy groceries. My dad is in the shower so I need you to help me bring everything in."

"You're just using me for my huge muscles?" He asked, putting his hand over his heart, pretending to be hurt.

"Even though your muscles are a nice attribute, I'm with you because I like you. I'm not and never will use you." I said seriously.

"I know. I'm just messing with you."

"Come help me. I don't need my ice cream to melt."

"Let me put on some clothes first. I don't think your dad would appreciate this." He said, gesturing to his gorgeous body. I just realized he only had boxers on. My face turned a bright red. I looked away, hoping he didn't notice.

"Don't look away. I like it when you blush. It's cute."

That just made my blush deepen. I smiled and looked at him for a few seconds.

"Are you sure we can't hang out today? I really want to spend some private time with you." He said, wiggling his eyebrows.

"As much as I would love that, I need to spend time with my dad. I miss him and he misses me."

"Fine." He huffed. "I get to take you out tomorrow after school."

"Sounds good to me." I smiled as he went to the bathroom.

A few minutes later, he's dressed and ready to go. I wish I could get ready that quick. We talked the whole walk to my house. It wasn't long, but I still enjoyed every second of it.

"The groceries are in the backseat of my truck. Don't ruin the bread and be careful with the milk. I've dropped milk several times from walking too fast with it." I instructed as Ezra and I brought the bags and bags of food in.

"I know how to bring groceries in." He laughed.

"Well, I want to make sure everything makes it inside and not on the ground."

"I know what I'm doing. You, on the other hand, need to be more careful. You're the one that drops milk."

"Oh shush it and bring the groceries in will ya?"

"Of course. Anything for my girlfriend."

Hearing him say that brings chills to my body.

"Girlfriend? What is he talking about Kylie?" My father asked as panic rises in me.

"N-Nothing. I'm just a girl that's h-his friend. T-That's all he meant." I stuttered glaring at Ezra.

"Oh. Okay. Well thank you young man. I've got it from here." He said, taking a bag from Ezra's hand.

"Okay. I guess I'll be going home now. Nice to meet you sir." Ezra replied, firmly shaking my clueless fathers' hand.

"You too. Maybe you can come back sometime and help me fix some things around the house. I could use a young man like you."

"I'd love too. See you Kylie." He waved as he walked back to his house.

"I like him." My dad smiled, putting the butter in the fridge.

"Really?" I asked surprised. He normally hates any guy that comes near me.

"Yeah. He seems like a decent guy."

"He does, doesn't he?" I ask, proud of my boyfriend.

It's gonna take a little bit getting used to calling him my boyfriend.

"I'm gonna go get the movies ready. You get the ice cream ready." My father ordered.

I nodded my head and began to prepare our delicious ice cream.

"Awww! He proposed! So sweet!" I smiled, licking the spoon I used for my ice cream.

We're on our 5th movie of the day and its getting time for dinner.

"You just love proposals don't you?"

"I do indeed."

Proposals are just so romantic to me.

"What do you want for dinner? Do you want to go out or cook?"

I thought for a few seconds before coming up with an answer.

"Go out. I could really use some greasy food right about now."

"That time of the month?" My dad asked, shocking me.

"Don't ask me that! That's too awkward to talk about with your dad!" I shout, giggling.

"Oh I know all about that kind of stuff. Your mom told me every time she started. It wasn't awkward with her so it shouldn't be with you." He said, shrugging his shoulders.

"Well it is so don't bring it up again." I laugh.

He started looking off into the distance like he was in deep thought.

"I miss her kiddo."

"I know. I do too." I reply, knowing exactly what he was talking about.

We never really talk about her because when we do, I always end up crying while he comforts me. I know it's hard for him to deal with the loss of my mom, but we can't keep staying in the past. She would want us to live our lives like we would if she was here. She would want us to be happy.

"We never told you this because we didn't want you to worry about her or yourself....." My dad trails off, trying to avoid eye contact.

I nod my head so he knows it's okay to continue.

"She had cancer long before she had you. When she became pregnant, we were ecstatic. We were so happy to have a baby, but at the same time we were terrified. We were afraid the cancer would spread to you. We asked the Doctor and he said it wouldn't get to you because it was gone; Your mom didn't have cancer anymore. When we learned this, we couldn't help but yell out in happiness. As soon as the happiness came, it went. He told us it was gone, but it would most likely came back by the time you were 7. We knew we had to spend all the time we had as a family together. When it didn't come back, we thought 'Hey maybe its gone for good.', so she stopped taking her medicine. Little did we know, just a few years later, she would die from the same cancer. She's had cancer basically her whole life. Even though the cancer didn't spread to you during her pregnancy, It may have spread to you through your genes. Apparently, it was a hereditary disease. The Doctor told us once you turn 18, we need to have you checked for the cancer. Since your birthday is less than 3 months away, I figured it was finally time to tell you."

I couldn't speak. I didn't know what to say. How do I reply to that? I just stood there, looking at my dad with a terrified expression, only one thing running through my head.

I might have cancer.

(A/N Bet y'all wasn't expecting that! :) So do you think she has cancer? Let me know in a comment! Thanks for reading! :) Don't forget to follow and vote! :D)
