《Taming the Rogue》I Just Do

I met eyes with Demi when she rounded the corner of the main building, and she froze. My body was getting colder and colder by the second. Tanner and Tyler are holding me up right now.

"Baby?" Demi's voice cracked quietly. For someone who wouldn't listen for that coming out of her mouth would've heard only a whimper.

"Tyler, go back into the classroom." Tanner mumbled to Tyler after the English teacher was dragged out of the classroom by the security guard. "And close the door behind you."

Within seconds I heard the door close as quietly as possible. Then Demi ran to me, but stopped at my side, realizing she can't just wrap her arms around my right now.

"She can't talk. Every time she tries to she coughs up blood which leads me to believe it's punctured her lung." Tanner whispered to Demi. He was holding it together for my sake.

I went to tell Demi that I loved her, but blood spilled out of my mouth instead.

Demi wiped the blood that was going to drip down my chin with her thumb before wiping it on her pant leg. "I love you too baby. I could see what you were going to say in your eyes. Every single time you tell me your eyes soften." She smiled at me before kissing the top of my head the best she could with me being taller than her.

"How the fuck did a metal ruler get in her back?" A paramedic asked with furrowed eyebrows as he led his team quickly to me.

So that's what's in my back. Cool.

Demi, Tanner, and the EMS team were talking a lot to get the details they best they could and pulled Tyler out of the classroom so he could tell them what happened so they'd know what they were dealing with. I heard one ask if she stabbed me with it. Another said she threw it into my back. Another was panicking.

All of the voices started to sound the same after laying down onto the stretcher.

"Sit her up. The fluid can't sit like that." Within seconds I was sitting up more, but still on my side with my knees to my chest.

"The heli is here." Someone yelled and then everything was a blur. People were hooking things up to me, shoving tubes down my throat, jabbing needles into my arms and hands, and asking me questions as if I could respond.

I want to respond, but every time I go to talk I cough up blood instead. Like, fucking hell.

"We've made it this far Harlow. Don't you fucking dare die on me now." Demi whispered. I couldn't tell if she kept on saying it or if it was just my head fucking with me.

"Has anyone told Tate yet?" I asked for the one hundredth time. I left my phone at the school since I was just doing my best to get to the hospital the helicopter was flying Harlow to.

"Don't worry. He knows." Tanner mumbled and gave me a knowing look for a second before looking away.

"Will he know where she is?" I knitted my eyebrows together. They are saying Harlow can make it, but they don't know when she will wake up from surgery.

"I can promise you when I say this: Tate is tracking her scent right now. It's four hours driving distance from your house, so it's about a one hour run in wolf form for him." He whispered the last part.

"The closer the two of them are the quicker Harlow will heal." I kept looking at the OR door as if Harlow would just walk out of there any minute.

"Where is she?" A deep voice yelled from behind me. It was almost unrecognizable.

"Tate," I waved the twin over and he quickly ran over to Tanner and I, completely ignoring the nurses that were trying to stop him.

"What happened?" His tone was lower than I have ever heard someone speak in. It screamed pain, but was backed up with rage. The blue color is his eyes kept disappearing and switching with black.

"Breathe before you switch in front of everyone. Harlow is going to be okay." I pulled him into a hug, knowing he won't blow up if someone hugs him. Yeah, he's a softie.

"Okay, okay, I won't switch. Now tell me what happened." Tate sighed and backed away from my hug.

"Her batshit crazy English teacher threw a metal ruler at her after a bickering match between the two and it impaled her, and punctured her lung in the process. She's out of surgery now, but we can't see her till more of the meds wear off. Just stay here with Tanner and I. I need you to stay close to her." I begged Tate with pleading eyes.

Tate nodded slowly. "The closer I am to her the more pain I feel from her. I'll fight through it for her though." He whispered and sat in between Tanner and I on the narrow bench.

"Are you three here for Harlow?" A woman in blue scrubs walked up to the three of us and eyed Tate suspiciously.

In her defense he was wearing his leather jacket without a shirt underneath it and didn't zip it up, and a pair of very dirty jeans. The amount of grass and mud stains that were scattered across them hid the light blue color.

"Yes, how is she?" I drew her attention to me and away from the pained Tate who was very close to growling at her for staring.

"It looked worse than it was. It was a rather clean puncture. We pumped the blood out of the right lung, which was the one that got punctured, and then carefully stitched her all back up. The only reason as to why she's still under right now is from the shock and amount of blood loss. It went through one of the major veins in her back, but we gave her a blood transfusion and she should be waking up here in the next week or so. We don't want her to breath too fast or too deep. If she stresses the stitches out they'll cause more damage than there already is." She read off of a clipboard she had in her hands here and there, but the realized that not Tate, Tanner, or I had any idea as to who in the hell she was. "My apologies, I am doctor Williams. I was the one who performed the emergency surgery."

I shook her hand, but Tate just looked at it when she held it out for him to shake.

Dr Williams moved on to Tanner who shook her hand with a smile. Enough with the formalities, just let me see my girl.

"When can we see her?" I asked in a emotionless tone.

"I came here to tell you that she can have one visitor at a time in the ICU. You can see her through the window, but only one at a time in the room with her." Dr Williams waved us over to follow her.

When Tate saw his sister through the window he immediately began his task of protecting her.

"Who is first?" Dr Williams smiled at the three of us.

"Tate, you're her brother. You go first." I whispered to him.

"It's not a good idea to be at her side right now. I'll lose control and go kill the teacher." He whispered in my ear and I nodded.

"You go ahead Demi. She'd want you to be near her the most." Tanner gave me a weak smile. "When you come out I'll go in for a few minutes before heading back home. I'll cover for you at work. You just stay with her. I'll just combine our gym classes together. Weight lifting and normal gym can just be meshed." He patted my shoulder with a smile and I nodded before walking into the room where Harlow laid.

My feet carried me over to her bedside as I did my best to tune out of annoyingly loud beeping from the heart monitor. It's comforting and heart wrenching at the same time. "Hey my Little Wolf." My voice was supposed to be strong and confident, but instead it cracked in pain at the sight of her being hooked up to so many chords and tubes.

The only response I got was the consistent beep of the monitor.

Her chest rose and fell slowly; once every few seconds as the rest of her was seemingly lifeless.

I took one of her hands in mine and played with her fingers. She always did it with mine when she was nervous, and come to find out it works more than expected.

"I know you can't hear me, nevertheless respond to me, but I want to tell you how much I love you. I don't know how everyone in the world can live without you in their lives, because now that you're in mine I know I couldn't live without you. The doctor said you'd wake up sometime this week, but since you're stubborn you'll probably test it and either wake up today or a month from now." I sighed and did my best to get at least a chuckle out, but all that left me was a pained huff. "I love you so much Harlow Luna Rouge, so please wake up soon baby. I need you to." I kissed the back of her hand. "I'm going to let Tanner come say goodbye before he heads back home, but then I'll be right back. I promise." I kissed the top of her head before walking out of the room and quietly closing the door behind myself.

Tanner gave me a sad smile, but it dropped when he saw my expression.

"It's so hard to see her like that. To see someone you love in that state, and in that bed with all of those wires in her." My voice cracked as I let Tanner wrap his arms around me.

"She's a fighter Demi. The fire in her isn't something that can be extinguished with a metal ruler." Tanner teased with a small smile as he pulled away from the hug. "I'll be right out."

I nodded and stepped to the side so he could enter the room.

My gaze drifted over to see Tate still frozen in place. He was still staring through the glass like an alpha wolf watching over their pack. His expression was emotionless, but he was radiating pain.

"She will wake up in a few weeks." He mumbled, but didn't tear his gaze away from his twin sister.

"How do you know?" I was slightly taken aback by his statement.

"I just do." Tate shrugged. "I just do."
