Chapter Two

||KIT||

I groaned along with my friend Amy as we saw the certain group that was heading over to our lunch table.

Amy, because she knew she was about to let them down and me, because I knew Cassandra would find something awful to say about me today, like usual.

I couldn't stop myself from wanting to carve her eyes out with a rusty spork whenever she decided her life wasn't complete unless she made mine miserable.

I'd made friends with Amy back in seventh grade when I was new in school and she was probably the most down to earth person on the planet and this explains why she was also friends with Cassandra, the reigning queen of our high-school.

Amy might be blunt but Cassandra was a bully through and through, which was where the problem lay. Cassandra hated the the fact that Amy and I were even friends in the first place.

Amy's dad owned most of our town's real estate though, and with her mom being a well known district attorney with loads of influence, Cassandra thought it better to be friends with her than enemies even though it meant wherever Amy went, so did I (and most times not by my own free will, either).

As they came to a halt at our table I could just tell Cassandra was staring down at me in disgust sp I continued to pick at my cold fries and slurped on my juice box.

I was starting to get addicted to them.

"Tell me you convinced your parents."

I almost jumped at the sound of Cassandra's voice from directly over my head and scooted down the bench a little as she placed her hands on her hips looking pleased with herself while Amy groaned again.

"As I said last night when you called me Cass, I really can't make it. My dad's having a dinner thing and he said I had to attend, besides Cullin will be there."

Cassandra scoffed, "He's not even cute-"

"Well, I like him. He and his family will be there so I have to be too."

I winced and pushed my lunch away as I'd already lost my appetite thanks to Cassandra.

"But it's supposed to be eight of us you know that. We've been planning all year. We cannot upset the system by changing the ritual!" Her voice was getting annoying now and my gaze shifted from her to the four girls behind her.

Her best friends Stephanie and May were staring at me with identical scowls on their faces and behind them stood two younger faces, one I recognized to be Gwen and another whose name I didn't remember.

Stephanie, a tall girl with anger issues and killer legs, was as mean as they come and I avoided looking her directly in the eyes since I heard she considered eye contact a challenge. She regularly got suspended for fighting and it was a wonder that she was even friends with Cassandra considering they both had the same temperament.

May, however, was a complete airhead and never got off her phone. Some said it's because she was constantly vlogging everything for her secret YouTube channel but I knew she was probably just taking selfies.

Right now she was obviously checking out the zit on her chin as she frowned down at her phone's display whilst gently prodding it with her pinky nail.

My head snapped back to the other two as I heard my name.

"Kit's fun! You just gotta give her a chance."

Why is she making me sound like a charity case?

Scratching my head with my index I looked up to see Cassandra glaring down at me.

"Ugh. Amy, take a serious look at her. The only thing worse than her hair is that shitty kidz bop headband."

Aha! She went for the hair. Of course, she would.

My hand instinctively reached up to touch my headband. I'd gotten it because baby Maya drooled on it the last time Sara took us Christmas shopping a few months ago and it slowly became my favorite accessory. There weren't many headbands that could manage my thick head of hair.

I smiled fondly at the memory before Amy's next words jarred me back to the present.

"Take her or just forget about me helping you meet The Vixens next weekend then."

Amy was pretty good at getting people to do what she wanted, knowing damn well that was the one band Cassandra wouldn't give up an opportunity to meet. They weren't all that popular since they still played out of their garage most of the time and their manager was just the lead singer's uncle, but the boys were cute and had a good sound that could take them places.

Cassandra, like everyone else, wanted to be the one hanging off at least one of the boy's arms when they finally made it big.

"Wait- wait- wait, take me where?" I asked peeking around Cassandra's bony arm to look at Amy's face.

"To Cass' cabin tonight. You remember I told you about the little pre spring-break shindig we have every year?"

Oh I remember, I just don't remember ever volunteering to go.

"Uh I- I can't-" I stuttered out as Cassandra crossed her arms smirking, "Sara definitely won't let me."

Sara is my foster mom and although she was overprotective I usually didn't mind it. She only meant to keep me safe so I couldn't blame her.

At least she wasn't as bad as-

"I'll ask her for you don't worry," Amy spoke, pulling me out of my reverie, "you know she has a soft spot for me."

I groaned deeply knowing she was probably right, but I couldn't possibly go anywhere with Cassandra and her friends.

They all hated me.

Did Amy hate me too? Was this some kind of elaborate setup of hers? What would motivate her to even think of putting me in the same room with the devil incarnate and her lesser demons?

"I- I c-" I started.

"It's settled then, Kit will come with you guys. Pick her up at seven, I'll send Dylan the address. You guys are taking his car right, or will it be Mason's?" She smiled a little and flashed me a light wink making my heart flutter.

She knew I was crushing on Mason big time.

Maybe she didn't hate me after all.

Cassandra rolled her eyes, "Ugh, well Stephanie, Nick, and I are going with Dylan so I guess this one can ride with Mason and May in Rolland's car." She said 'this one' with so much disgust that if words could hurt I feel like I would've just melted into a puddle of mud right on the spot.

Wait, what? Did I hear right?

Mason and I would be in the same car together? We didn't even have classes together for cripes sake. My inner goddess was rejoicing, until I saw Cassandra's expression that was.

Oh, she hated me I could tell but nothing could bring me down now, not when the only thing on my mind was I'd be spending an extended amount of time with Mason, the boy I'd been crushing on for years.

"So you in?'' Amy asked with a smirk. I only nodded, gaze to the floor.

"Of course she is," Cassandra's scoffed, "no one but you would willingly give up the weekend of a lifetime."

Rolling her eyes she walked away, "be ready by seven, cause if we get there and you aren't we're not waiting for you."

I lifted my head with a grin.

Oh, I'll be ready.

"I'm not sure if I want to kill you or thank you," I said turning to Amy when they were gone and she tugged at the orange tips of my hair.

"Thank me now, you can kill me later if it doesn't work out."

The chapters gradually get longer.
