《The Monster With A Soul - Dwayne (Lost Boys)》Chapter Two

On the way to their friends house, Edgar and Alan give Christine a brief history on their friend, Sam, and his brother, Michael, who they assumed to be a vampire. Apparently, Michael's first night in Santa Carla was spent with a group of bikers who later proved to be vampires. Michael was pressured into becoming one of them, but his transformation was not complete yet, for he had not made his first kill. And today? Their goal was to kill the head vampire to undo everything, and set him back to normal.

The three of them arrive at a nicer house, a little bit outside of town. It was in the middle of the country, which in a way, did not help with making Christine feel safe. They leave their bikes by the wooden gate, and knock on the front door of the house. A boy with slicked up blond hair answers. He looks at Christine for a while, a quick look turning into a stare.

"You must be Christine," he says. He was trying to flirt with her, and failing miserably. He deepens his voice a little, trying to come off more masculine. "I'm Sam. It's a pleasure. I have to get Mike, I just don't know how we're gonna get to the caves."

"Hold up," Christine says, putting her hand up. "We're going in a cave?"

"Relax," Alan tells her. "You don't have to go. You will just have to deal with the fact that your best friends will soon be your in-laws!"

"Fine," she groans, grossed out by the thought. They go into Sam's house, Edgar and Alan setting their stuff down. A dog comes running up to them, playing with Christine. She gushes at him, her heart going soft. She spoke in a high voice, as if she was speaking to a baby. "Oh my God! You're so cute!"

"Are you done, Mom?" Alan asks, turning towards her. She ignored the dog, her smile fading. Alan's eyes go back to Sam. "Where's El-Vampiro? The blood sucker?"

A boy with tight curly hair comes downstairs. The dog starts barking at him, like he was a stranger. There was a different vibe from him, but Christine could not put her finger on it. Sam grabs hold of the dogs collar, hushing it.

"Ready?" Sam asks the man. He nods. "This is Mike. He's the vampire."

That would explain the weird feeling, but Christine did not want to prove her brothers right. She simply ignored it. Christine and her brothers introduce themselves to Michael, a little stand-offish because they did not know if they were his next meal.

They went in Sam and Mike's garage, taking the nice car that was there. Christine sits up front with Mike. As they reverse out of the driveway, Sam calls to the old man in his yard.

"Hey Grandpa! You mind if we take this out real quick? Thanks!"

His grandpa watches in disbelief as they drive away. It was almost noon, the midday sun making it boiling hot outside. They drive to an area to what looks like a cliff. The dirt looks like sand, making it seem unstable. There was an opening to the cave, but Christine had never seen it before. Michael pulls Sam aside while the two brothers check each others bags.

"I don't want you goin' down there."

"Well," Sam counters. "I'm going."

"Look," Michael starts. "This isn't a comic book, Sam. These guys are brutal killers."

"So are the Frog brothers! Look, who would you rather go down there with, them or me?"

"If something happens down there," Michael says. "I'm not gonna have the strength to protect you."

"Well, this time, I'll protect you, bud. Even though you're a vampire, you're still my brother."

"Listen!" Edgar shouts. "Just so you know, if you try to stop us, or vamp out in any way, I'll stake you without even thinking twice about it!"

"Chill out, Edgar!" Sam replies.

Michael was going to stay out with the car so they could get out of here as quickly as possible. They all make sure that they have all the materials needed for the worst case scenario. Once they are ready, they head down into the cave.

Sam is more than happy to try and help Christine any way he can. He would take her hand when there was a steep jump, or when it got dark. Of course, he was a bit young for her, but she did not mind the extra help. This was an abandoned hotel. Everything was covered in dust or dirt, rotting away like the memory of the institution. It looked like a tornado flew right through it, as if one could. A hurricane? Probably.

There was a bed, and a woman was laying in it. Edgar suggests that they stake her, but Michael comes to her rescue. To avoid Michael's possible anger, Edgar backs off, letting Michael take her. She tells him there is a kid, which he also goes back to retrieve. The group goes deeper into the cave, using their flashlights to check every last corner of the place. Alan claims he feels a draft, the group crawls into a dusty tunnel-like hall. Flies begin swarming about the place, causing them to try and swat them away.

"We're on the right trail," Edgar says. "Flies and the undead go together like...bullets and guns."

When they have reached the other end, they look around. It was freezing, and had found nothing, thinking it was a dead end. Only a moment later, Sam lets out a scream as his flashlight points to the ceiling. Christine's hand smacks over his mouth, trying not to disturb the silence of the unsteady building. But when she looks up, she cannot believe her eyes.

"JESUS!" Edgar yells.

Four men were hanging from the ceiling in a deep sleep. They were all dressed in dark clothes, leather jackets mostly. Their skin lacked pigment, making them look like ghosts.

"I thought they were supposed to be in coffins!" Sam says.

"That's what this cave is!" Edgar announces. "It's one giant coffin!"

"What do we do?" Christine asks, tapping Alan's shoulder aggressively. Edgar climbs up the wall, a wooden stake in hand. "How are you going to kill all of them?"

"I can't," Edgar replies. "Unless I kill the head vampire...and I don't know which one he is. But right now, they're at their most vulnerable. Easy pickings."

"Maybe the little one on the left," Alan suggests. "First come, first staked."

"What was that?" Sam asks. "A little vampire humor? It wasn't funny!"

Edgar takes a moment to prepare himself for the stab. Something did not feel right with Christine. Just as Edgar pulls his hand back for the jab, Christine attempts to stop him.

"Goodnight, bloodsucker!" Edgar proclaims.

"Wait!" Christine argued. "I don't think that's him!"

"How would you know?" Edgar asks. "You thought all of this was bogus anyways. Unless you know for sure who it is, then the creepy one over here is taking the hit, okay?"

Christine gives up, turning away as Edgar raises the stake in the air. As the stake is driven through the vampires skin, a yellowish substance spews everywhere, creating a mess. They all try and run for it, but the vampires could not sleep through such an event. The other three men awoke, chasing after the horrified teenagers.

"You're dead meat!" one of the vampires shouts.

The group tries to crawl through the tunnel, but the vampires are not far behind them. Christine feels a hand grasp her ankle, pulling her back. She cries out as her brothers get further from her, only being dragged back. It was either all of them or just her. She could not let her brothers die, so she had to make a sacrifice: she stopped trying. She turned her head towards the vampires as her brothers called to her, not wanting to lose her.

"Go!" Christine yells at them. "We have no other choice! You have to go! I love you both!"

"We can't just leave you!" Edgar shouts.

"GO!" Christine screams as she feels herself being further pulled back.

After a moment of hesitation, Edgar and Alan run out of the cave. Christine's eyes fill with tears, knowing that her death was now inevitable. She collapsed on to the eroded floor, on her hands and knees. She hears footsteps draw near to her, but she cannot look up. She does not want to see her own murderers faces as her last living memory. She wanted to remember her brothers. The only people she truly cared about. She wipes the tears as they stream down her face.

"Show me what she looks like," one of the men said. The other blond with longer and less curly hair pushed her chin up with his finger. The man with long black hair looks at her, looking guilty. Christine did not know why. The blond with spiky hair clapped. "Let's take her to the lobby, boys."
