《Two Hikers》Chapter 2 Part 2

And....done. Last box is finally empty. Now that I think about it I should check out the record store and maybe see about getting some new ones.
I look through the window and see what I can describe as heaven. With excitement I enter the store and start looking around. I pick up a few and get ready to pay when a door in the back opens, its the girl from earlier; Steph. "Hey, is it just these today?" You can hear the sadness in her voice even-though she's trying to hide it but the act isn't fooling me. "Yeah, just these. I thought what you said earlier was really sweet and I'm really sorry for your loss. I can tell you were close." I hope she can make it through this. "Thanks, looks like that will be $36.50" I hand her the money, thank her and make my way back to my apartment. I see Alex on my way but don't stop to talk to her as she looks like she's a woman on a mission.
I have put my records away and head back into the town and make a realisation, I haven't seen Ryan since this morning. I pull out my phone, find his number and call. After a few rings he picks up sounding more distraught than ever. I ask him where he is and once I hear I know what he's doing, he's playing it over in his head to see if it could've played out differently.
As I'm walking up to the cliff side Alex calls me and tells me everything she found out while in town. Apparently Mac got the call and lied about it and that Typhon is pressuring him into lying.
I make my way towards him slowly not wanting to scare him. "You okay?" I ask with an edge in my voice not knowing what to say to him. He doesn't answer so maybe telling him about the call will make him say something. "Mac got the call, Alex told me, he got the call and he lied about it." "It doesn't matter!" He has a red glow around him, what's he angry about? "I keep coming here, and playing it back. But it always ends the same." He comments with a mix of sadness and anger. "He's dead, He's really dead Evelyn"

I don't know what to say to him, there's only one thing that I can think of and that's to tap into his anger and see what's really the matter. I start to walk towards him cautiously and gently put my hand on his shoulder, as soon as I do a wave of scarlet surrounds us. The floor start to rumble and break away with cracks making their way towards us at a very fast pace. In seconds its black all around us and we are standing on the little bit of cliff remaining.
'It was my fault, my job is to keep people safe, and I failed.' "Ryan, I owe you my life." I mean I do he saved me. 'She's wrong, I let her cross that log, I put Gabe in harms way. I'm not a hero, I'm a coward. Worse than worthless.' "You were brave this morning You're brave now. I've never been as brave as you." 'It doesn't matter. Gabe dead because of me. Gabe I'm so sorry.' Ryan steps forward and I lightly grab his forearm to stop him. For a few seconds there is nothing then give him what he needs. "He loved you Ryan. He would forgive you, you know that. You're not alone." He says nothing but tears leave his eyes and he starts to drop to the floor so I grab him and let him cry, he obviously needs to let it out. The world returns to normal and his hand reaches out to my waist . I don't know how long we were like that but it didn't matter.

A Universe of Bloody Evolution
The Void was never meant to be opened to the Multiverse. The horrors waiting inside it should have never seen the light. And yet, the biggest mistake in the history of creation led to the impossible. In an event later known as the Outbreak, gates appeared in the first Universe, and with them, the Void was free. For ages the Void destroyed universe after universe, spreading its power in every direction, leaving only death and pain behind. But before every Universe met its end, it still had a chance. A small part of the population that survived the initial Outbreak and was granted a mysterious System to help them fight against the dangers that came from the Void. They were the Multiverse's last hope even if they couldn't stop the collapse of their own world. And so the cycle continued until the 36th Outbreak came. Leo Hale, a young reporter from Wolford, was one of the lucky ones to survive when the majority of Earth's population turned into monsters straight out of nightmares. Thrust into a constant battle for his life, Leo was determined to push forward and find his remaining family. Even if it meant sacrificing what was left of his humanity. After all, you either adapt or die. Story of progression and evolution with my take at the post-apocalyptic genre. Unlike most monster evolution stories where the monster rushes to gain human form, here I plan to do something quite the opposite. After all, in a world where almost everything wants to kill you, being human can be hard. Warnings are here to give me the freedom to write whatever is necessary. This is my first original novel. Also English isn't my native language so any feedback is welcome. Remember that even if initially this story takes place on Earth, fictional places, streets, etc will appear. Release Schedule: Monday - Wednesday - Friday Average chapter length: 2000-2500 words (There might be exceptions as is the case with some of the first chapters - most of them are longer.)
