《Burned (Hate at First Flight #2) ✔️》36. Failed Bravados

Will wouldn't be returning today apparently, still away on as Quincy had called it to look for a certain type of bread. He'd called Douglas to let him know. Whatever the bread was, I wouldn't be surprised if it was from Mars because there was no reasonable excuse as to why he couldn't have found it in the state of California.

And to make it even more confusing tomorrow was the day that he decided we go on our "date". The date that he had literally pulled the whole owing him a wish card on me for. Maybe he had also come to the conclusion that it wasn't really a nice thing to do that to someone, that is basically forcing the other person into going a date.

I know it isn't technically a hardship going on a date with Will, heck any girl out there would be lucky to go on a date with the guy. He was a really nice guy, the type that any girl would be proud to take home to their parents.

But the problem was that I didn't see him more than just a friend. And believe or not, I sincerely hoped he would understand that sooner rather than later. I didn't want him to get hurt because of me.

At about two in the afternoon, Douglas and Georgia made a run to Subway to grab some sandwiches for us. And believe me when I say Douglas and I had a long discussion on whether I should go with him to purchase the goods. It had only ended when he told me that he promised he wouldn't commit any crimes that would impact the company's market value.

As I waited for them, I grabbed the latest edition of People magazine. The cover had a photo of Dylan and Alex smiling at the premiere of Alex's latest movie. I turned to the page with the article about how Dylan and Alex had recently purchased an adorable golden retriever together last week and named him Goldie.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the two of them, but it was interesting what people cared enough to read on other people's life. Like seriously, getting a pet together was as adorable yet insignificant as me deciding to change my usual coffee order to a flat white. That was private information.

I turned the page over to an article featuring a photo of a familiar guy. I couldn't quite place him so I read the heading.

As I read over the article I remembered where I'd seen him before. He was the second lead in Dylan and Alex's movie, Rushed. He played Julian Van Dyke. And officially he was dating Stephanie Gryers whoever that was.

Again, adorable but private matter that I still failed to see why everyone needed to know. All that news did was tear some fans up and crush some naive girl's heart.

Just as I turned the page to an article about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez again making aloof 'I still love you' gestures on Instagram, my phone vibrated on the coffee table, alerting me to a new message.

I placed the magazine on my lap before checking my phone to see a message from Nancy.

Mr Burns called to tell me that he was thinking increasing the invitation list.

A little bit confused as to the true meaning behind her message, I hastily replied,

A minute later I received her reply.

I frowned involuntarily at the idea.

!

I felt bad being blunt about my decision without any explanation towards her but the thought of having some old men and women who I didn't know being there on the day that I allowed myself to grieve over my loss left me contemplating not having the memorial this year at all.

It was like having people right outside your bedroom, their ears pressed against the bedroom door on your wedding night. It might seem like an obscene comparison but nonetheless that was the closest comparison I had for what Mr Burns intended to do.

I put my phone on silent, intending not to listen further on the matter.

"We'reeeeee backkkkk!"

I looked up from staring at my phone where I had placed it on the table.

Georgia ran in carring two brown bags with the logo of Subway on it while Douglas walked in behind carrying drinks from Starbucks. And righr behind them was Evan.

The last time I remembered seeing Evan was when he was being hauled into the car that day on the beach after asking two girls how they felt about a threesome at which he earned a slap on each cheek before he decided to show the entire beach population what he had consumed for lunch.

"Hello beautiful!" Evan's loud voice soon echoed the house when he spotted me. I didn't miss the look of frustration that crossed Douglas' face.

Evan grabbed the seat next to me hastily leaving Georgia and Douglas sitting opposite us on the lazyboys. Georgia pulled out six Subway wraps from the two brown bags before calling out for Quincy to take one for himself and for chef Yuri.

"White bread, chicken with everything except the chilli sauce," Georgia said after checking the tag on the wrap before she handed it to me. "White with turkey with all the goods," she handed it to Evan who accepted it heartily with a smile. "White with beef and everything," she handed it to Douglas before she grabbed the last one, "and everything for me."

I couldn't help but widen my eyes at the thought that she got one with everything in it, chicken, turkey, etc.

"Don't judge until you taste it," she told me before she took a bite out of the sub. Pure contentment appeared on her face.

Without further hesitation, I grabbed my sub and took a huge bite out of it.

An involuntary smile formed on my face as my tastebuds lit up like a Christmas tree and only when I felt the sweet and spiciness of the sub hit me did I notice that I had been starving.

I heard Evan sigh from beside me and looked over at him. He was staring wide-eyed at me, his eyes focused on my mouth. "What?" I asked self conscious as I grabbed a tissue and wiped my mouth in case something was on it.

"I'm full just watching you eat," Evan continued to stare at me with no shame.

I nearly choke on what I was chewing while Georgia burst out laughing and Douglas eyed Evan with suspicion.

"Careful," Douglas was the one to offer me one of iced Americanos that laid untouched on the table. "And this is why your father banned you from going to the club last year for two months." He aimed the comment at Evan who furrowed his brows together.

"Because I'm so good-looking that I make all the girls choke on their words around me?" He wiggled his brows suggestively.

Douglas shook his head. "Because you had more than two girls filing a retraining order against you."

This time I choked back my laughter at Douglas' comment.

Evan frowned. "They were giving me bedroom eyes whenever I ran into them. It's not my fault that I took it to mean they wanted to see the goods." He smirked suddenly.

"Boys..." Luckily Georgia decided to intervene or I would never have been able to stomach my sub. "I don't think anyone cares about your failed bravados. Now can we talk about something that wouldn't lead to our lunch ending up on the Persian rug?"

Evan and Douglas both shrugged as I took another bite of the sub.

"By the way, have you heard anything from Jace lately? Mom and dad said that he was busy and I tried to get in touch with him but failed."

Evan shrugged while Douglas nodded slightly before grabbing another iced Americano from the cup holder and taking a slow sip at it.

After he finished he took another bite from the sub. When we finally felt like yelling at him, he broke the silence.

"He's graduating soon. After that he was thinking of coming back this side." Douglas stared at me suddenly out of nowhere before he took another bite of his sub. This time he didn't wait until he swallowed it to say anything. "He'll be joining Holden Securities."

That last sentence seemed to be a bomb because suddenly Georgia nearly spat out her drink and Evan's playful mood dropped replaced with a serious one.

Georgia wasn't one to hold back and this time she didn't fail her true nature. "Whaaaat?" This was the first time I'd seen Georgia look so lost.

"Is the guy nuts?" Evan asked. "Holden Securities? Phillipa's dad's company?"

Douglas nodded, looking defeated yet understanding as if when he first heard the news he too felt the same way.

"I need to talk to him!" Georgia stood up and pulled out her phone. "He needs a good slap in the face to wake him up. Heck, I'm thinking of taking the next flight out there to do just that! What is he thinking? And how can he think to do this without telling me first?"

"He is legally an adult now, Georgia. He can make his own decisions."

"Not when he basically ruined my best friend he doesn't." She pressed on her screen roughly.

Evan checked his Rolex out of nowhere. "Well you ain't gonna catch him now. It's nearly midnight over there right now. Let him get some shuteye."

"I don't care if he's too busy meeting the UN to discuss the state of the world economy, he will have to take my call." She finally called him and walked out of the room.

I was still a little bit lost to the current situation. I remembered the tidbits of information they had told me about what Jace Frost had did to Phillipa Holden but I'm sure by now everyone should have gotten over it. I think, at least.

Just as I finished up my sub, I saw my phone light up, letting me know of a message.

I picked up and checked it again. It was from Nancy.

My mood just went down, knowing that tonight I wouldn't be sleeping as comfortably as I had hoped.
