I yawned and handed the phone to Cali so she could dial.
"Here you talk," she said hnding it back, "It's ringing."
"Hello?" Someone answered after a couple rings.
"Hi Mrs.Bennett its Tori," I said to Mark's mom.
"Hey Tori," she said and I heard a hiccup.
"Me and Cali were just wondering why Mark isn't at school?" I asked.
"Oh tori he's just sick. Yeah he's in bed sick, don't worry." Mrs.Bennett said.
"Alright, would you like us to bring his homework?" I asked.
"No it's fine," she said, "He'll just get it when he goes back."
"Ok. Can you tell him I called?" I asked.
"Of course. Goodbye Tori."
"Bye Mrs.Bennett," I hung up and looked at at Cali, "He's just sick."
"Oh ok, well we all get sick." She said with a shrug.
The reason I worry so much is this: Mark has been my best friend since third grade. He was there for me when no one else was and ever since my mom's funeral we were closer. I remember when I was sick one time and I didn't answer, he dktched school to make sure I was ok. We care about each other a lot BECAUSE we are best friends.
And Cali. Cali was also our best friend, but she didn't know the entire story of me and Mark. All she knew was that we were best friends, and don't get me wrong we love Cali. Me and Mark adore her because she brings excitement, energy, and fun into our small group.
Me and Cali headed towards the cafeteria and we sat down. We talked and ate our food and once we were excused we left.
I headed to history and walked in sitting in my desk. Since Mark wasn't here the chair next to me was empty. I watches the door as Trent and Shawn walked in. Trent looked over at Shawn, told him something and was about to walk when Shawn grabed his arm. They seemed to be having an argument, and whenever they looked to my direction I just looked down into my notes. Finally Trent sighed and sat down beside Shawn.

When I looked at Shawn I saw victory and determination. Like he had just won the fight. I rolled my eyes and payed attention to the teacher.
She was telling us how the project was due Monday and how if we brought it late it would be tardy. Blah, blah, blah.
Shawn had already agreed to bring the project Monday so me and Trent didn't have to worry about a thing. After class I headed to my locker, grabbed my stuff and sat in homeroom waiting for the bell to ring.
Once it did I bolted out of my chair and walked outside. Cali would have to ride the bus because of Mark not being here. I grabbed my bike and started to pedal down and into the dirt path.
Thirty minutes later when I reached home I noticed a car parked in the driveway. It was dad's car. I didn't even bother to put my bike in the shed, instead k layed it on the grass in the backyard and ran up the back stairs and into the house.
"Dad? Dad you home?" I yelled through the house.
"Yeah Tori I'm in the living room," he replied.
I walked over to the living room to find my dad on the sofa with a puffy, red-eyed Suzie in his lap. And a Lilly sitting across from them.
"Dad what's wrong? Suzie why are you crying?" I asked.
"Tori you know Mr.Bennett? And how he's stationed in Iraq?" dad said.
"Yeah Mark's dad. What about him?" I asked feeling my heart move faster. Mr.Bennett is like a second father to me. He's in the army and he's super active. Whenever he would caome to visit me, dad, and Suzie would go on camping trips with him and his family.
"There was an accident," dad said sadly.
"He's not....not like dead is he?" I finally asked.
"No, he's fine. Actually he's coming home," dad said.
I sighed in relief and plopped down on the couch.
"But..." dad continued.
"But what?" I asked.
"He....he's missing both of his legs. They were blown off," dad said finally finishing.
"What?" I said in total and utter shock.
"He also has a broken arm. He needs physical therapy if he wants to regain total and complete movement and control in that arm."
"Dad no, Mr.Bennett can't...I mean he...but...." I stuttered, "That's so unfair!"

"I know kiddo. Mike is good friend, he can make it out of this."
That's when it hit me, "Mark."
I shot out of the couch and ran outside. I grabbed my bike and started peddling down the driveway.
"Shit!" I screamed and hit the breaks. Blake's car stood in front of me and if he didn't stop he could've run me over.
"Bitch I don't want your blood on the hood of my car!"Blake yelled.
I ignored them and started to move.
"Wait Tori we need to tell you something," Shawn said.
"Later," I muttered.
"But it's important," Cole said.
"Stop your damn bike and listen," Blake said.
"I said LATER," I started to pedal down the driveway and into the dirt road.
I knew the way to Mark's house by heart. It was only fifteen minutes away. And the whole ride to his house all I thought about was that night after my mom's funeral.
FLASHBACK
"Tori open the door," dad said softly. Lightly banging on my bedroom door.
"Go away," I cried. I sobbed into my pillow, my sobs sounding muffled.
"Tori please. We have guests downstairs. Go say bye to your grandparents at least. Tori please," Dad said.
"Leave me alone!" I yelled.
My dad sighed and I heard him lean on the wall and roll down.
I looked outside the window. It was a beautiful day and that angered me. How could the day be beautiful? My mother his died, it should be cloudy and raining. But no, the day was clear and beautiful. The anger came and then left as it was replaced by a wave of sadness.
"Tori honey please open the door," This was grandma.
I didn't say anything I just kept crying in the pillow.
"Tori please let us in," this was Mr.Bennett, Mark's dad.
"Its no use," dad said, "She won't answer the door."
"Let me talk to her," Mr.Bennett said. I heard some shuffling and figure my dad had moved over. The doorknob moved around, but I had the door locked so there was no use.
"Tori we know you're sad," Mr.Bennett said, "But you have to be strong. You need to take care of Suzie. You're making her really sad, and you have guests that are feeling the same pain as you-"
"Your wrong!" I screamed.
"Tori please let me in." It was a child's voice. I instantly tensed. Mark.
"Tori please let me in," he repeated.
I look over at the door and sat up.
"Tori please," he said and I saw the doorknob slightly move but stop because of it being locked.
I got up and walked to the door taking a deep breath. I silently unlocked the door and Mark slipped in. He closed the door behind him and locked it.
"Son let us in," Mr.Bennett said knocking on the door.
"Leave him. Maybe he can talk to Tori," Dad said. We heard footsteps and figured they all left.
I was suddenly embraced in a hug.
"Tori I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Mark said.
At that point I couldn't hold back the tears. I cried in his shoulder and he didn't let go. After a couple minutes I pulled back and sat at my bed. Grabbing Mr.Cuddles and laying back.
Mark crawled on the bed laying himself next to me, "Tori I loved her too."
I nodded and sniffeled, "At least you have both of your parents."
"Yeah but dad is always stationed somewhere and I barely see him. It's hard. And at least your mom was here everyday to see you and Suzie," Mark said.
I squeezed Mr.Cuddles and started to cry.
"Please Tori don't cry, please don't cry." Mark said.
I turned over to face him, "She's gone Mark. She's never coming back."
Mark pulled me into a hug and I sobbed into his shoulder.
"I know Tori. I know." His voice cracked.
BACK TO REALITY
That night I cried myself to sleep. But unlike other nights, my best friend was there to help me with the pain. So now its my turn to be there for him and that's exactly what I was going to do.
I thought all this as I pulled into Mark's driveway.
