《THE CUNNING VIGILANTE》53. The Spy

Inside the Empress' bedroom, Empress Wei looked at the scrolls in behalf of his husband. Because of the conflict involving the palace, Emperor Wang Yong's duty was being doubled due to the citizen's problems near the border and the Minister's case. He could tell that this month was a hell of a mess, the scrolls needed to be sealed and signed piled up every single week. Empress Wei sighed as his brain almost bleed on how many these political documents he had to complete.
Just as he was about to fixate his attention to the next scroll, the guard outside yelled, “Young Madame Feng wishes to see Your Highness, the Empress.”
Empress Wei stopped the paintbrush midair and stared towards the door. Empress Wei pondered, what had happened this time?
“Let the Young Madame come in.”
The guard opened the door and the slim, petite figure walked in. If not for the Empress discovered how Li Jie sneaked in that night, he believed that he would be fooled by his rabbit-like appearance. Li Jie walked inside the bedroom and didn't forget to kowtow. Empress Wei sighed, he had clearly said before that they should not act that formal but as expected as the wife of a General, they matched so well. Empress Wei nodded and said smilingly, “Rise.”
Li Jie's beautiful and milky face faced at the Empress. His heterochromia eyes flickered at the Empress' beautiful face and inwardly felt sour. However, he soon cheered himself that his beauty was not that inferior to him and sighed in relief. In fact, Li Jie always sees himself prettier than the Empress. Yes, he acknowledged himself as pretty now. Before, he disliked his face because he was not manly, but his opinions changed for the sake of love. And he knows, he knows that he finally captured his husband’s heart.
Not boasting, but it’s true. Even the author couldn’t refute, she was writing this story full of sour bubbles in her heart.
“Your Highness the Empress, this humble one wanted to report that someone from outside this manor had managed to find his way inside and injured my servant.” Li Jie said with a clear pained voice. Empress Wei enraged and clenched his fist.
“This slowly peasant dared to enter my manor?! So brave eh? Tell me, is Young Madame Feng's servant alright? Empress Wei asked calmly but his face clearly shown deep anger and irritation.

“This humble one answers to Your Highness, my servant…was fighting for his life.” Li Jie frowned and clenched his fist angrily. He was so infuriated that he wanted to kill a certain cockroach. Empress Wei frowned and asked, “What's his condition?”
“He was poisoned by Wolfsbane, Your Highness.” Li Jie said, his mood complicated. He knew that there was no cure for this poison, and for the first time after his death had he ever felt that the situation was untreatable. He could stitch, sew, cure diseases and poison, but in Wolfsbane’s case, it was different. This has no cure, and he hadn’t encountered such case before. So, he was naturally helpless.
Empress Wei's eyes darkened and gritted his teeth, “This matter shouldn’t be delayed, let General Feng find that traitor and bring him to me.” The plan that His Majesty was about to happen, he couldn’t let his husband and his people’s sweat ended up for nothing.
‘I'm sure my husband reacted by this matter too early though.” But Li Jie didn’t spill his thoughts and nodded at the Empress. He bowed one last time and walked out.
“This stinky people! My head's already a mess and not only that runt gave me a headache but almost got me killed by exhaustion! I'll stew that peasant’s head or I’m going to burst!”

Inside the servants' household, all servants were being knelt down on the floor by the General. The guards surrounded them and the servants were shaking in fear. Feng Delun shifted his gaze to the kneeling servants and frowned coldly.
“Say, who entered the infirmary recently?” The General asked, his cold voice penetrated the servants' ears that made them shook in fear. They were unable to move because of the dark pressure hovering upon them. The servants dared not to speak up, making the General pissed even more.
“Still won’t say?” He said coldly as he gripped his sword. The servants trembled and they couldn’t lift their heads up due to the fright that they might lose their heads. As he gazed down the servants, one had caught on his attention. He wasn’t sure about his hypothesis, but he surely saw this servant before. And, he was quite clear about the fact that he saw this servant as he once visited the Liu manor. Also, he saw this servant in the town where Li Jie and him once bought food ingredients in the market. The wretch daughter of Minister Liu's company that day was him. Of course, Feng Delun knew about this. Because of Liu Mingmei's hot gaze that day, how could he not notice? He even felt disgusted that day.

Delun signaled one of his guards next to that servant and immediately knew what his master wanted to convey. He picks up the servant who was huddled by the floor and threw him forward. The servant still groveled onto the ground, not wanting to look up to the General. He spoke terrifyingly, “N-no, I don’t know anything!”
Delun released an eye signal and the guard unhesitatingly released his sword out from its scabbard, pointing at the servant’s neck.
“I-…I…I…”
“Speak!”
“I didn’t do anything! We were ordered by the Empress not to come to the clinic and obeyed His Highness! If there’s someone who entered him, it’s not me! Please, Master! I didn’t do anything!”
‘I didn’t even get to ask what my goal is, yet this servant pleaded guilty as I arrived.’ Delun thought and raised his brows. He frowned. It was obvious that the servant was lying. He avoided Delun's eye contact immediately and sweated heavily. His mind wandered off somewhere. Delun raised his right hand, signaling to tear off the servant’s head when the servant shrieked and cried, “No, don’t kill me! Right, I wounded him. But I was just following orders! He…” The servant suddenly realized that the moment he speak the truth, the Minister will surely get his head. But, if he wouldn’t say, he'd also be killed on the spot.
“I won’t say! I won't say!” The servant retorted, he vigilantly gazed the General and squeezed his fist.
“If you don't open your mouth, I'll cut your tongue instead.” The servant was terrified, but he laughed instead, feeling amused. What was the point? If he say, he'll end up dead. If he wouldn’t, he still will be dead. He shouldn’t have tempted himself to greed. Now, he reaped what he sow. Minister Liu had offered him a taels of gold just to make him agree from this mission. How could he refuse? Without money, you'll starve. You'll end up living in the streets.
“Was it also you who spied on my wife that day when he was cleaning my uncle’s room?”
“So what if I am?! In the end, I don’t even live anyway! Just because of that damned pendant!”
The servant shrieked even louder, cursing the one who gave him the mission and the one in front of him. He went insane, laughing and sobbing heavily.
“Young Madame Feng wishes to enter the household!” Feng Delun widened his eyes and looked at the latter went inside of the household. Li Jie looked at his husband and smiled. Delun's uneasiness flew away, relieved that Li Jie wasn’t dissatisfied with him. He didn’t want to show Li Jie his dark side, but now he felt that the stone pressed inside his heart was being lifted.
Well, how can Li Jie, a merciless killer in the 21st century, would be able to dissatisfy just because of this?
“His highness the Empress wishes to see the spy and requested General Feng to bring the servant to him.”
The servant shuddered, looking at the petite figure walked in. He remembered, he was one of the servants who were tasked to assassinate the general's wife by Liu Mingmei. And without being noticed, he escaped the manor as he realized how ferocious this petite person was.
The servant clenched his fist, took the wolfsbane poison and poisoned himself.
“Damn!” Delun gritted his teeth, but the servant no longer had his life. Delun was a terrifying person, but he never intended to kill the latter if he confessed.
He was unwilling to be killed by their hands. Guessing that he had killed himself, it wasn’t bad after all.
He didn’t need to starve in the streets and live in the outskirts of the town.
Li Jie ‘tsked' and gazed down the servant on the floor. It was a pity, but he never had the chance to change his life again.

The Elemental Arena
*A Rational-Adjacent litRPG Survival Series.* The time for the trials has come, pitting the mortal species of the galaxy against one another. By completing challenges, clearing dungeons, and defeating rival species, the players may forge themselves stronger and smarter. But only one species will be declared the winner. Earth has finally qualified... ...and participation is mandatory. A twenty-nine year old data entry clerk works together with a group of internationally diverse players to survive. Learning synergistic skills and using teamwork, can humanity achieve an upset? If they don't, their lives are forfeit. Author's note: Chapters will be anywhere from 6k to 10k in words, varying based on the plot beats instead of specific word counts. Realistic actions and teamwork will be important aspects of my story. I'm trying something a little different in writing a realism focused litRPG, hoping to capture the essence of how real people would react to their situation. People are complex and don't always get along. I don't recommend starting the series expecting wish fulfillment tropes just because it's tagged litRPG. It's a survival story with the game settings on Hell difficulty. The plot hasn't gotten there yet, but in the future of the series I want to recreate my nostalgia of forty person raids on Ragnaros, but with the high stakes of boss battles in Sword Art Online. I also love puzzle rooms so expect one of those each book. Warnings: mild PG-rated language, graphic violence and gore, and graphic medical content.
