《Dark Lord》Chapter 48

ShuYan stared at the guqin in front of him, his head aching once more, almost like it was trying to tell him something. But he didn't understand. Every single day, without fail, his head would begin to ache, the image of a man would always be in his mind, and his heart would begin to hurt.
He didn't know who that man was, he couldn't see his features, but his heart would always hurt when that man appeared in his mind. He didn't understand why this was happening to him. He didn't know if he could trust his master, but something in him felt like it was under his master's will.
ShuYan closed his eyes, his face in a grimace. Then it happened. Another image appeared.
An image of a beautiful man holding onto his hand, and although ShuYan couldn't see his face, he could tell the man was happy about something. But ShuYan couldn't remember what this was, even if he tried to force himself to remember what the image meant, his mind wouldn't let him.
He wanted to know if these images were linked, if they meant something that he should know, if they were some of the memories he had lost. But every time he asked his master, it felt like the images got dimmer and dimmer, to the point where he could barely remember them.
Guqin.
ShuYan felt like this had to link him to the man who was always in his mind. He wanted to know, he wanted more information, but he had to stop. He could tell that his master had begun getting suspicious, and this was bad.
One wrong move and he could blow his cover, and then he would risk his only chance of hopefully gaining a piece of his memory back.
That man, what did he mean to his heart?
Just as ShuYan asked himself this question, a flaring pain erupted in his heart. He doubled over, his head aching as he could see fragments of memories becoming clearer and clearer, and then it started playing.

His head felt like it was going to burst. A light surrounded his body, and a scream erupted from him. A scream filled with despair, with heartache echoed into the sky.
ShuYan felt a tear fall from his eyes. He knew now, he remembered now. It was RuJin, it was the man he loved. He was the person who he had loved with his whole heart, the man who he had spent forever trying to find, the man who had always lived in his heart.
"Master, something big has happened." The voice of a young male servant said to the man.
Immediately, the man got up, already knowing that something was wrong with ShuYan.
He had felt a fracture in the spell that he had put on ShuYan, and that worried him. That could only mean the ShuYan had somehow regained his memories, and he was not going to let him do so. He needed to stop it at once. He had taken a chance when he allowed ShuYan to not to be under his complete control, but it looked like he must turn him into a real puppet.
His footsteps led him into ShuYan's residence, and he could see the bright light coming from him. He stepped in, seeing that ShuYan was truly regaining his memories.
But he couldn't do anything yet. He had to wait for the light to settle before he begin.
After ten minutes passed, ShuYan felt his body get lighter as it fell down, his feet hitting the ground. That man had lied to him! He had tried to get him to go against RuJin, he was going to use him to defeat the man he loved.
He needed to find RuJin before it was too late, he needed to get out of this cursed place. But just as he was about to exit, the man was already there to block his way.

"Get out of my way!" ShuYan yelled, his eyes a vibrant red, as if he was trying to control his new amount of power but unable to do so. A big amount of Qi bounced off his body, knocking down anything in its way, but the man still stood still.
"You know that I can't do that, dearest ShuYan." The man smirked, dispelling the Qi away from him as he stepped closer to ShuYan, who was about to go berserk.
ShuYan didn't have much control, his anger and new amount of power was overpowering him, but he still needed to get away. The first thing he could think of was to attack the man, and hopefully get away before his power settled down, because right now, his power was monstrously strong.
"ShuYan, you don't want to do that," Sensing what ShuYan was about to do, the man warned him not to do so. But even as he said that, his expression didn't change, a smirk still on his face.
ShuYan didn't hear those words, and immediately as they were said, his body got ready to attack. Just as he was about to reach the man, his body fell, his knee hitting the ground and he screamed.
"Like I said, you don't want to do that. I control your soul, I have free will to do whatever I want to you, and I can make you feel a thousand deaths without you really dying. Although you feel so powerful right now, your soul is under my control, and I can anything I want to you." As the man said so, he gripped ShuYan's chin in one hand, and smiled a smile that wasn't a smile towards him.
ShuYan's eyes were still wild, but even as he struggled to get off the ground, his body wouldn't move at his command, and the pain digging into his soul got worse with his struggles.
"I was trying to be considerate and allowed you a chance to still control your own body, but it seems like you don't need that anymore. Seeing how you are so desperately trying to escape right now, it seems like my only choice is to fully take control from you. But, hey, it must hurt to know that you would be used against your love but have no power to stop it, right?"
With those words, the pain in ShuYan's eyes were evident.
"Prepare yourself, it's beginning. From this moment on, your body will be mine to control, and you won't be able to stop yourself. You will kill that man you love so much, and you won't be able to save him. For now, I'll be kind and won't let you have your memories yet. You can thank me later." The man pressed one hand onto ShuYan's head as he said those words.
ShuYan felt a pain ripping him apart, and his consciousness dulled.
"RuJin!!!" His scream filled with desperation, sorrow, and heartache rung loud and clear before his body touched the cold, hard floor.
RuJin heard his name being called and he turned around in confusion.
Just then, his heart felt a wrenching pain, and he pushed his hand against it, grasping his robes tightly and trying to stop it.
Was this a sign telling him that ShuYan was alive?
Did something happen to him?
As the pain subsided, he closed his eyes.
ShuYan, you must live, and you must wait until I find you, please.

8 106The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
