It's been a week since I found out about Ijeoma's daughter, I was taken aback when she told me I'm not going to lie and the first thing I did was to discreetly check her ring finger for any engagement or wedding bands that I might have missed. Relief flooded me when I didn't see any and there no ring marks too, so I knew she wasn't previously married. Many questions filled my head like 'where's the father of her child?', 'is he still in their lives or not?', 'where are her parents and why does she need friends to help her babysit?', all these questions and more had me thinking.

I comforted myself with the fact that as we got to know each other more, she would open up to me and tell me everything I needed to know. By the way, I got the test result the next day and her daughter had two pluses of malaria but no typhoid which I texted to her along with the recommended medication and specific dosage needed to be administered.

I was currently heading to the cafeteria for lunch and also because I wanted to see her. I hadn't seen her since that day I found about her child because I had been extremely busy believe it or not my whole week had been completely packed.

As I walked into the cafeteria, I looked towards the counter area and saw her attending to a customer which brought a smile to my lips knowing that she was in today unlike the last time. I walked over to her side of the counter and stood behind the person she was currently attending to. Less than two minutes the guy in front of me walked away with his order and I stepped forward. Her head was still bent as she put the money she just received into the cash register.

"Hello, what can I –"closing the register, she raised her head to see me. "Oh hi"

"Hi" I replied with a smile.

"So, what can I get for you?" she said averting her eyes from my face.

"Uh, I'd like two muffins, one sausage roll and a bottle of coke please" I recited

"Okay, coming right up" she said leaving the counter to get my order.

I drummed my fingers on the counter as I waited for my order, I watched as she grabbed my order from the show glass and I knew in a couple of seconds it would be ready but I didn't want leave just yet.

"Uhm, so how's your daughter doing?" I said trying to make a conversation with her and also because I genuinely wanted to know.

"She's fine now, thank you"

"That's good"

"Yeah"

She handed me a tray with my order and I handed her my card for payment.

"How do you feel about having lunch with me?" I asked with a tinge of hope in my voice after deliberating on it for two minutes.

"Right now?"

"Yeah"

"Oh um, I'm still working right now. I'm sorry" she replied.

"Oh, may –"

"It's 11:58. I'm sure leaving to have lunch with this fine doctor two minutes before your lunch break won't hurt anybody" One of her colleagues interjected as she walked over to us, apparently she was watching the whole thing.

I turned to ijeoma and she gave me a tight lipped smile before swiping my card into the system and then handing it back to me.

"You go ahead and I'll join you" she said before walking into a room behind her.

I gave her friend a thankful nod before taking my lunch and headed to an empty table at the corner of the cafeteria. A couple of minutes later, she was sat opposite me with a cup of coffee and a doughnut. We were silent for a couple of minutes before I cleared my throat and spoke.

"So, uhm tell me about yourself" I said

She hesitated a bit before speaking. "Well, there isn't much to know about me. I work here and I have a two year old daughter, my life is pretty boring."

"Hmmm, okay. Is your daughter's father in your lives? If you don't mind me asking" I asked with abated breath.

"Uh, no he is not actually" she responded and relief flooded me.

"What happened to him?" I was curious.

"Uhm, if you don't mind, I'd rather not talk about him" she shot back a little bit upset.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you that was insensitive of me" I apologized quickly.

"It's fine" she waved her hand dismissively.

I changed the subject immediately to something lighter and made sure not to come close to anything that had to do with her baby's father as that was a touchy subject for her. I did end up getting to know a few things about her like the fact that she loved the color yellow and was a fan Tuface's music, loves grapes but hates anything in the flavor and so much more. I also found out that she loved baking and that the muffins I loved so much was made by her, if that wasn't a sign then I don't what was.

We talked for the entire hour of her lunch break but it didn't feel that long to me, probably because I wanted to spend more time with her. Watching throw her head back in laughter, which I noticed she did when she found something extremely funny, made me feel a little bit giddy.

Our little moment had to come to an end when the beeping sound of my pager disrupted our conversation.

"I'm sorry but I have to go" I said raising my pager.

"Sure, it's fine" she replied with a smile.

"I'm really sorry" I said rising from my seat.

"No, it's fine. I also have to get back to work" she assured me as she also stood to her feet.

"This was nice" I said referring to the lunch.

'Yeah, it was"

" So I'll see you around" I said hopefully.

"Sure" she affirmed with a nod.

We both went our separate directions and I walked out of the cafeteria with a smile of satisfaction and I was not sure it was completely from the food I just ate.
