《A Tale of Two Opposites (Stryders #3)》Chapter 22- EDITH

^^Always imagined West's wolf, Salvatore, to look like Ghost from Game of Thrones! The red eyes make it perfect too.

I turned off the lights, making all the children stand in the corner of the room, hidden away from sight. Bad thing with rogues or any werewolf is that they could smell you. No matter what you did, they can sniff you out.

But over my dead body was this rogue going to take any of the pups.

I places my ear near the door, and heard shuffling. The rogue wasn't near the classroom anymore. It probably got distracted by something or someone.

A knocking on the door and a familiar voice saying, "It's me! open up!"

I unlocked the door and a pale Miss Judy came inside the room, "We need to all evacuate to the main office where the principal has gathered all the faculty. That place will be the safest. We don't know if there's going to be more, so we need to hurry."

Rogues usually kept alone. Usually. But with what is happening in this world, I wouldn't be surprised by anything.

"What happened to the rogue outside just now?" I asked, wondering if Miss Judy knew where it was.

"We have our tracker distracting it in the meantime," Miss Judy's voice was a little frantic. "We just need to have them come down the main office. You can lead them and I'll be the last person."

I nodded, and a small pup extended his hand out to me, and we led the way. I knocked in the office, and the principal of the school, Candice. She ushered us all in her small office, and turned to Miss Judy.

"Do we have everyone?" Miss Judy asked, adjusting her glasses up. They were all safely in the main office, and I scanned the crowd of pups, about 20. I counted their hands, but for some reason someone was missing from me. I didn't know who exactly it was, and frowned deeply. I shook my head. Who was it?

My heart dropped. Tantalizing fear crept on me. I scanned the pups again, looking for a certain someone. "Lucy," I whispered, terrified for her. "I have to go back-"

"You shouldn't!" Miss Judy exclaimed, scared. Everyone had the right to be. But Lucy was in trouble. I didn't think if Lucy was even in the room while it happened. How could I forget???????

"You stay here and make sure the pups are safe," I took my hands and firmly placed them on Miss Judy's shoulders, needing her to understand. "You have to get out of here and wait for back up, no matter if I come back or not."

Miss Judy's eyes almost popped out of her sockets. Her eyes were starting to get teary. At this time, I did not need to see anyone cry. I had a job to do. Crying could come later.

"Guard them with your life," I ordered. Shouts from the principal and Miss Judy were heard as I ran as fast I could to the one place I knew Lucy would be at.

Outside the playground.

Pushing past the double doors, I didn't stop until I got onto the playground, Lucy in the corner, sobbing. Alarm bells rang.

"Lucy there you are," I said in relief. She lifted her head up to me, running to me.

"T-the b-bad wolf," she sobbed. "The bad wolf is out here."

My heart lurched.

With blinding speed, a brownish rogue tried climbing up the slide, but it was too slippery for him. For a moment, I froze, but common sense kicked in and I grabbed Lucy. "Lucy you need to run as fast as you can, you got it? Don't look back, okay?"

The rogue wolf was smart and made his way the steps, trying to as gently as I could, I clumsily pushed Lucy off the slide, and shifted, tackling the rogue before his attention got to Lucy.

Shifting was always exhilarating. It's been so long since my wolf felt this free- to actually fight something. I forgot how much my whole demanded out of me. The Alpha coming out.

My wolf clamped her mouth tightly on the rogue's neck, but it tried to claw at me. I only pulled away for a second, but the wolf was only after one thing: Lucy.

It chased after her small frame. Come on, Lucy, go inside and be safe.

Another rogue entered the equation, running after me. What was this a free for all? Why were the rogues doing this? Why after the innocent pups? I didn't want to know.

I dodged the second rogue, and went after the first one, trying to stop it from going after Lucy, lunging and biting him again. The second wolf bit my hind legs to stop me, but I kicked him furiously, a loud growl of pain escaping me.

"Edith!" Lucy cried out in the far end of the school, trying to get back inside, but the doors of the school were locked. Hearing her still here caused me to loosen my grip on the first rogue, causing him to escape my hold, but I clawed out the second one.

These wolves weren't giving up at all. I wish I could tell her to leave. She needed to leave.

The weather shifted, gray clouds whirling in the sky, almost as if it was angry. Rumbling of thunder echoed nearby.

One second I was trying to go after the rogues, but another, lightning struck so near, it hit one of the rogues that it knocked him out. The other one was getting back up, slowly and I my wolf turned her head because movement from the corner of her eyes near the direction of Lucy caught her attention. My wolf's eyes landed very, very happily on her mate.

West was here.

And he looked pissed off.

Rain started down pouring.

Thankfully, Lucy spotted West- running towards him. He bent down picking her up tightly, and the one rogue was only slightly deterred from the rain, but kept going after her.

West broke the door handles that went in the school, and turned around looking at me. Like he was waiting for me.

I wanted to shift back and yell at him to keep going, but he only smirked a little before the rogue suddenly got blasted by what looked like a gust of wind, knocking him out too. What caused that? Who caused that? Not dwelling too much on it, I took this chance to run to West- er, I mean Lucy.

A few feet away from me, West smiled holding the door open for my wolf, holding Lucy in the other. "You're absolutely stunning." My wolf basked in that. Too much. Way too much. I trotted inside with West following me, letting Lucy on the ground and she hugged me tightly. My wolf nuzzled her affectionately.

West explained, "The teachers got the school surrounded now, there's at least more than a dozen tracking wolves outside the premise. Blaine and Penelope are here too." I perked up at that. Going through the hallway was a struggle because my wolf was limping just the slightest.

For a flash of a second, West looked physically pained. "You're hurt, Edith."

Yeah, I was. My wolf pathetically whimpered.

"When we get to the front, I can try to heal it for you."

My wolf turned its head, wondering how.

I wasn't going to shift back until I had clothes. Miss Judy and Penelope both realized that instantly while Blaine and West, like male werewolves, didn't get it.

Unlike them, I was not going to just shift in front of everyone.

"Come on to this hidden place," Miss Judy ushered me, handing me what looked like would be her clothing. A sweater and a short yellow cardigan alongside some black pants.

Miss Judy was a bit smaller than I was so it was, well, tight. My breasts were practically painted on the shirt.

I looked ridiculous.

"You look like a hot librarian," Penelope noted, hugging me tightly and Blaine joined in too. We did a group hug.

"I love you guys," Blaine said. I smiled at both of them.

"Sorry I worried you guys," I apologized.

"Don't worry, we knew you would be good. I just think West might have bit someone's head off he was away from you," Penelope gave me a knowing look. We went to join where the rest of them were, and West's eyes raked over me. I felt my entire being warm and my toes curl up. I motioned him to come to me so he could heal me.

I sat down on the ledge in the parking lot where parents were picking up their children, worried sick and something squeezed in my heart seeing them like this. It reminded me of my dad. Having a normal family. The caring I got from him...

"Roll up your pants," West came over, and I rolled up my pants on the right leg where the rogue got a good bite of me. In a days time it would heal- West knew this- but I wasn't going to argue with him.

"You can heal it?" I asked.

"My magic isn't the most controlled thing, but my mom taught me the basics as much as she could," West replied. "Except mine is a little...haywire." He bent down, and inspected my leg, focusing on it. A small glow on West's hand appeared, and I watched him concentrate on the area where my leg got bitten. I swallowed, looking away. Okay, so he looked really cute doing it.

My leg tickled a little, but other than that I couldn't feel anything.

"There," he said, pulling his hand away. I looked at my leg- and nothing. He really did it. "Hey don't look that surprised I told you I could!" he sounded offended.

I tried not to smile, "Thank you." I touched my leg, and it felt great. "Really, thanks." I looked up and he was a little close to me, breathing in deeply.

"We're friends, right?" West's voice sounded strangled.

Lucy did make us pinky promise our friendship. There's no way I can back on that. "Yeah, we are."

"Could I-" West paused, clearly in some kind of pain. "My wolf needs to come out. I know you're safe now, but I can't stop him any longer."

I gulped.

West studied my face. "Salvatore would never harm you, but I won't- can't- shift him unsupervised, so could you watch him just for a little? Let him walk around spring free for a bit?"

"Your dad's called the Demon Alpha, right? Because of his eyes?"

West nodded, casting his eyes downward. "If I shift into him, he's unstable. Ha. A little like me. Unhinged. But he wouldn't hurt his mate. He'd never do that. I wouldn't shift if he would hurt you."

"Okay."

West's head shot up, exhaling sharply. "Really?"

"I just have to let Penelope and Blaine know," I breathed. Now that I was okay- because of West- I could do this. With the way West was looking defeated, I could tell it took a lot out of him.

West's friends, Theo and Jax were there and both of them asked me if I was alright. Theo gave me a look I couldn't decipher, but he smiled at me nonetheless. They both went with West back to the dorms where I told West I'd meet him.

Penelope raised an eyebrow when she heard this news. "Oho?"

"It's nothing," I said quickly, trying to dismiss it.

"Methinks not," Penelope jostled Blaine. "And thee?"

"Thoust thinketh Edith is fulleth thy bullshi-"

"Blaine there are children!" I cut him off, hoping the parents of the pups didn't hear anything thinking we were bad influences.

"Well I guess we need to go because our Edith here has a hot date."

I wanted to argue back that it really wasn't a date at all- but decided not to. What's the point?

Penelope being the best friend ever told me she could drop Blaine off home, and I could be with West. Still don't know what that entails. My wolf was excited to see her mate in wolf form. On the other hand, I really didn't know what to expect from West's wolf. His father's was infamous but entrusting me? I guess it made sense since I was his mate.

I believed him when he told me Salvatore wouldn't hurt me.

West told me to meet him in the edge of the woods trailing alongside the creek behind the school nearby the dorms, but not near enough in case there was any weirdos wandering the woods at nights.

Wait a minute.

We would be the weirdos wandering the woods at night.

I checked my phone, where Penelope and Blaine were blowing up my phone. I rolled my eyes as they kept checking up on me.

"Hey," West's voice came from the darkness, but I already knew it was him. And that he was here.

Let's do this. "Hi," I cleared my throat. West scratched his chin.

"I bought a small book bag of clothes so when- uh- I shift-"

"Yup that's fine," I cut him off, taking the book bag swiftly not wanting images of West to flood my mind. Because I ignored how prominent his biceps were through his shirt. Or what was underneath the clothing. Because his face was already breathtakingly beautiful.

West nodded, "I'll just get out of these." He started taking his shirt off, and I got a good flash of his washboard eight pack abs rippling, and his jeans hung low showcasing the chiseled "v" dent which I looked away quickly.

Someone was clearly comfortable in his body.

Bones cracked, and slightly turning around, I was instantly mesmerized with my mate's massive wolf. His fur was white as snow. His eyes were a ruby red, glittering even in the darkness. For a few moments it looked like smoke- no it couldn't be that- literally radiating off of him, but I realized could it be magic going off on him in small slivers?

Simply put, Salvatore was enchanting. I've never seen the combination of white fur and red eyes. It made him look deadly. In fact, he is deadly. He could kill so many supernatural beings with those eyes. Just how powerful was West? I've heard rumors about Lance Stryder the Demon Alpha. Everyone has. West inherited his father's curse. That couldn't be easy, and I feel guilty for being harsh on him. But it was the only way. To protect him. To protect me.

The power radiating off of the beast was almost suffocating. There could be no way that West can shift any time. Especially with the way his wolf kept rumbling lowly. West told me his wolf was feral.

My wolf wanted to get out too, the call of her mate wolf strong.

Salvatore circled me, figuring me out.

Yearning to reach out to him, I bent down as I put my hand on his soft fur, and his low rumbling came to a halt. He nuzzled my hand. A smile I was fighting sprung out.

Coming face to face with him I only said what came to mine. "You know, you're incredible" Salvatore licked my face and I let out a chuckle.

I stood up. "Okay, if we think we see anyone we're going to go the other direction, okay?" I asked Salvatore. He strode off a little, then waited for me to come. Stretching out his long body, he did a small rumble. I wondered how long it's been."Too long, huh?"

I don't know how West managed to keep this beast inside for this long.

As I reached him, we kept walking. I felt safe around Salvatore. Something I haven't felt in the longest time. Not even if Silas was here would I have felt the terror he inflicted upon me. I rubbed Salvatore's soft fur on his face, and unlike West, he was so sweet. Always looking at me to see if he could go. He didn't venture off far from me either when he left my side, and by this time I knew we were deep inside the woods.

Sometimes small noises made Salvatore pause for a quick second, but he kept going when I did.

If I shifted into my wolf, I knew that she wouldn't control herself around her mate, so I just didn't either bother.

Salvatore stopped suddenly, causing him give out a warning growl. No doubt this would cause any sane being to whimper.

Which is exactly what we heard.

Salvatore protectively blocked my way from where the sound was coming from.

He snapped his teeth open, growling at whatever the intruder would be. It wasn't a werewolf. I couldn't smell that...

Vampire?

My eyes widened at the thought.

"Easy there," the voice said, from above. Salvatore gave another growl baring his teeth, turning his head up. Salvatore was on high alert, and if West's personality was any indication, I don't think Salvatore will give any mercy. Probably someone hanging up the tree. He had an accent- was is British? "I'm not here to get eaten! But given the strange eye color of the wolf, I don't think he is something to be messed with."

"Why are you here?" and near our school? Thankfully he wasn't another rogue which that would be addressed within the school head chief- Alpha Heidi- but now there are vampires roaming around?

"Just meeting someone here," the vampire said. He paused. "Is that beast going to kill me?"

"If you come down here, yeah, it will," I answered. "I don't know if I can stop him." I had a grip on his neck, but really, what could if Salvatore wanted to eat the vampire?

A pause. Then, "You seem reasonable. Could you guys leave so my legs will stop shaking?"

"Depends," I replied casually. "What you're here for." I feel as though Salvatore was an extension of my own feelings because as I held him a little tight so he wouldn't try to go up the tree, he was calm. Ready to kill, but calm. I know if I released him, he'd go berserk.

"As I said, I'm meeting someone. For something."

"How do I know you're not a threat?" I questioned.

"I think the only threat here is that beast," the guy chuckled. This sets Salvatore off a little. "I'm here to get wolfsbane."

"Wolfsbane?" I asked, tensing. Who in the school is selling that hardcore drug stuff? It was the worst thing that any supernatural being could take. Human drugs were one thing, but wolfsbane literally made you go mad. Completely and totally mad. It left you to die. "Maybe I should wait for the one who's selling it to you."

"Well he's a no show, so here that leaves us," the guy said. "I'm just...investigating."

My eyes narrowed. "What's your name?"

"Nicholas."

"Okay, Nicholas, what are you investigating?"

"Can we just make the beast like shift back or-"

"Not happening," I snapped. Salvatore being here made me feel like if this vampire tried anything, he wouldn't go far.

"I'm investigating about who the heck is selling the stuff to stop it. I already know it's not coming from the vamps, but from the werewolves. Of course."

"Shut up you don't know."

"No I don't, but this is a start. Well. Was. Now my guy is MIA and now I may die because of this beast."

I was curious about who was selling wolfsbane in our school. I hadn't seen any of the effects it has on anyone yet, but I wondered where else wolfsbane was going through? Other packs? Potentially my pack? This was a supernatural world wide problem.

"I'll let you leave on one condition," I said, a plan forming in my head. My grip on Salvatore steadied.

"Alright," Nicholas said slowly.

"You tell us everything you know."

"I can meet you tomorrow- by the pizza place around 5:00? It's nearby here. I've been here for a short amount of time, trying to dig. But I can give you information. I'll tell you everything tomorrow. Just so you won't kill me now."
