《A Tale of Two Opposites (Stryders #3)》Chapter 19- WEST

"I think I'm going to ask Abby to Homecoming," Jax told me.

We were near the bleachers, watching the cheerleaders practice because Abby wanted me to be with her, so I did. Homecoming was something I didn't want to think about because the only one I wanted to go with wouldn't go with me. I can just imagine Edith telling me to die or choke.

Yeah, couldn't do it. I was, however, going to see if she was going with anyone...else. The thought made me want to rip the unknown wolf apart. The possibility of her going with some other wolf than her mate had me risking the chance to ask her. Even though I knew I'd get rejected.

"Go for it," I said encouragingly. I knew Jax had the biggest crush on her, and I can see how they would be good for each other.

"Really? It's alright?" Jax asked. "You think she'd say yes?"

"Why wouldn't she?" I asked. Jax shook his head and shrugged. "You just need to ask her in a very flashy way."

Jax smiled, "I was thinking about asking the cheerleaders to maybe help me out. Would you ask them for me?"

"Uh, sure," I said, my eyes were never really at the cheerleaders, but over by the other side of the bleachers were Edith was. Her full bow shaped lips were almost pouting as her thick eyebrows were furrowed in concentration as she was doing her homework.

"How's soccer?" a voice behind us asked.

Jax jumped, looking behind him.

"Hey Blaine," I smiled at him. We've been practicing inside the gym for the times he's been free, and Blaine is a hard worker. I appreciated that about him. Even though I was captain, I didn't have the final say of who could be on the team or not. I was going to give my recommendation to Coach Harden about Blaine. "Soccer is kicking my butt."

"I'm sorry who is this guy?" Jax asked.

"Blaine," Blaine said uneasily, jutting out his hand.

"Jax," Jax looked Blaine up and down, and turned around.

"Sorry Jax, this is my mentee and good friend Blaine, Blaine this is my really rude friend Jax," I introduced them because Jax was being a total douche.

Jax winced at my tone, and turned around. "A friend of West is a friend of mine."

"Thanks," Blaine muttered.

I noticed a bruise on Blaine's arm. "What happened there?"

"Just messing around," Blaine's lie was interrupted when Edith decided to show up.

"Ready?" she asked Blaine, not looking at me. Because we're going to the same place anyways.

"You're not coming with me?" I asked, feigning hurt. Jax now watched us with interest.

"You drive like a maniac," Edith commented offhandedly,

"Thank you!" Jax exclaimed. "West drives like he's auditioning for the Fast and the Furious!"

"I drive good!" I protested. "You didn't die, did you?"

Jax chuckled, "Not yet."

The after school detention at the elementary school wasn't horrible.

Miss Judy was really sweet. She actually cared about Edith and I. "Please if you need anything, let me know," she smiled at me.

"We'll let you know," I nodded at her.

"You're so good with the children," she almost sighed out, placing a hand on my arm.

I shrugged, "I don't know about that."

"Oh. You are," Miss Judy giggles, and with one last pat on my arm, she left the classroom.

"She's totally hitting on you," Edith hissed at me.

"Huh?" I asked, flabbergasted, looking around for any candidate that could actually be. "Who?"

"Miss Judy!" Edith cursed under her breath.

A slow smile stretched across my face. No way. "Are you jealous?" The look on Edith's face was priceless. Her usual stoic face rounded to an "o" and she looked petrified.

"Wh-why would I be jealous?!" Edith sputtered, her eyes avoiding me.

"You're right, why would you," I leaned in closer to her, "when you're the only one I see?"

Edith stilled for a second, her breath shaky- did I have that effect on her?

She gave me a thin smile. "She's right though."

"Right about?"

"You are good with the children," Edith didn't seem like she liked complimenting me. I took a sharp inhalation of breath. "They all like you."

"Well," I didn't know what to say. "Pups are just hilarious. They're truthful and honest. Being around them is a breath of fresh air."

Lucy was quiet today, and I didn't like that so I bent down to see what she was drawing on her desk. "What's that?" I asked, pointing to the dark spot that was behind some broccoli looking trees.

"The wolf," she whispered. "The bad wolf."

I frowned at that. "There's nothing to worry about," I assured her. "I'm here, remember?"

That seemed to do the trick because Lucy looked up at me and smiled. "You are sure strong.. I saw you eat spinach." I chuckled.

"Yup hope you ate some too. I'll need help slaying the big bad wolf."

"Edith can help you," Lucy suggested, her eyes casting towards my mate who was standing there like a fish out of water, awkwardly but in the most adorable making my heart do funny things way. "She's strong too."

"She is," I agreed. I've noticed her using the gym after school and going hardcore. I've noticed Blaine's disapproving look too.

"So..." I internally cringed because I wasn't smooth. At all. Not with her.

"So..." she parroted back to me. Not taking any of my crap.

"Homecoming. You going with anyone?" I asked, trying to sound casual as I pretended to straighten out an already straightened out bookshelf.

"Homecoming isn't for me at all."

Phew. She wasn't going with anyone. I didn't have to pummel someone that night.

"Blaine mentioned he had someone he wanted to ask."

"He did?" Edith asked, almost in a gasp. "He likes someone?! Who!"

"Her name is Joy I think," I answered.

"Blaine is going?"

Now I'm wondering if I should've even mentioned it. "Yeah...he was thinking about it."

One of the other girl pups, April, was having a dispute over her friendship with Lucy because Lucy had another best friend. Edith explained how you can have more than one best friend.

"Are you guys best friends?" Lucy asked innocently, looking between the two of us.

We were much more than that. "Edith doesn't even want to be my friend," I pouted at Lucy. "Isn't she just a meanie?"

Lucy's eyes widened into saucers. Edith's did too a little.

"Edith you have to accept West's friendship!" Lucy yelled.

"Uh-"

"She keeps denying me," I gave Edith a wolfish grin. Her cocoa colored eyes turned to me, narrowing a little now.

"We're-" Lucy grabbed Edith's hand and my hand.

"You both have to pinky promise you guys will be friends," Lucy told us, swinging her adorable puppy eyes at us. Speaking like we were making some wedding vows, Lucy announced, "Edith and West will now pinky promise that they will be the best of friends. West do you pinky promise?"

My eyes bore into Edith's, "Pinky promise." I held up my pinky.

"Edith do you pinky promise?" Lucy asked, totally serious about the whole thing.

Edith sighed, looking at Lucy, to April then finally to me. "You never said we couldn't be friends," I said gently.

Edith intertwined her pinky with mine, never looking away. "Pinky promise."

"I now pronounce you friends!" Lucy clapped her hands and the whole class-or, what was left of it- clapped along with her.

"Wow, it's official," I grinned at Edith.

"Nothing gives me greater joy," Edith deadpanned. For some reason though, I can't see Edith breaking the pinky promise.

No one can break one.
