《Taking A Risk》Chapter 6

I was taking the last tray of chocolate chip cookies out of the oven when the doorbell rang. Resting the hot tray on the kitchen island, I took off the oven mitts dropping them beside the tray.

Leaving the kitchen I made my way through the living room and towards the front door turning the doorknob I pulled it open revealing the last person I thought would be standing at my door.

Standing in all his six feet, four inches glory was Brooks Heyward. He looked gorgeous as usual dressed in a pair of light-washed jeans with the knees cut out and a black and white Nike hoodie and sneakers.

His black hair looked tousled as if he was repeatedly running his fingers through it. His piercing ice-blue eyes looked as bright as ever even on the dimly lit front porch as he peered down at me.

His name fell from my lips before I could stop myself as I shifted in the open doorway.

"Hey," he greeted his full lips pulling into a charming smile that I was on the receiving end of last night.

"Hey," I said in return. "What are you doing here?" I asked confused as to why he was standing on my front porch.

Pulling one of his hands out of the front of his hoodie he held something out to me. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was my inhaler. "You left this in my room last night I figured you might need it back."

I took the inhaler from his outstretched hand my fingers brushing against his. Up until this moment, I didn't even realize that it was missing. "Thanks, how'd you know where I live?"

He shrugged sticking his hand back in the front of his hoodie. "I dropped Nate off one time after practice."

I nod my head that makes sense. I looked down at the inhaler in the palm of my hand, then back at Brooks when a thought popped into my head. "You know you could've given this to Nate, to give to Mia it would've saved you the trip."

"That's true but I don't mind it's a short drive and I wanted to see you."

"Why?" I asked genuinely confused.

"Honestly, you've been on my mind constantly since you left my room last night. So when I found your inhaler tonight it gave me the perfect opportunity to come to see you."

"Ah, so you bringing me my inhaler wasn't a purely altruistic move on your part you had an ulterior motive," I joked but I couldn't help the giddy feeling that bubbled inside me at his words.

"Guilty," he joked back a smile spreading across his face.

I'm not going to lie one part of me was thrilled that I'd made such an impression on Brooks that he can't stop thinking about me. But the other more rational side knew that I was probably on his mind because he wants to fuck me.

"And what is your ulterior motive? Getting in my pants?" I asked tilting my head to the side as I cocked an eyebrow at him.

"Are you always this direct?" he questioned.

I shrugged my eyes still locked on his. "I don't see the point in beating around the bush," I replied.

"And what if I did?" he stepped a little closer to me. "Want to get in your pants," he said repeating my words.

I sighed. "Look brooks, It's not a secret you've fuck half the female population at Hainsworth and....," his laughter cut me off.

Shaking his head he smiled at me. "That's a gross exaggeration it's a big school. Half's a lot a quarter maybe but not half," he replied with a teasing smile.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Brooks I'm being serious, I not going to be one of those girls who drop their panties and spread their legs for you when you flash them nothing but a smile. If you're looking for that then you've come to the wrong person."

He sighed glancing away from me briefly as he ran his fingers through his already messy hair. His eyes slowly flickered back to me as the smile faded from his face. His expression morphed into something more serious.

"Gen, I'm going to be real with you, Do I want to have sex with you? Fuck yes. You're drop-dead gorgeous and sexy as hell. And if you give me the green light right now, I'll take you to your bed and have you naked and screaming my name as I buried my dick so deep inside you that you'll be feeling be there for days," he said causing my body to instantly respond to his words.

He inched closer until we were standing so close that his chest lightly brushed against mine. His woodsy scent invaded my nostrils my breathing became ragged as he leaned his head down his warm breath fanning my ear as his lips parted. I couldn't help the shiver that worked its way down my spine and the goosebumps that spread across my skin my heated skin.

"Hell, we might not even make it to your bed I might fuck you against the inside of this door instead," he whispered his lips lightly brushing against my ear before he pulled back. He peered down at me a smirk lifting the edge of his lips telling me that this asshole knew exactly what he was doing to me.

"But if you don't want that I'll respect your decision and we can just be friends," he said backing away and giving me some much-needed breathing room.

His hands were clenched in fists at his sides indicating that he wasn't as unaffected as he was trying to seem.

Snapping myself out of whatever trance I've been in I took in a shaky breath as I attempted to compose myself ignoring the throbbing sensation between my legs. His last words finally registered in my brain. I looked at him incredulously. "Friends," I repeated the word sounding breathy as if fell from my lips.

"Sure why not? Yeah, I'm attracted to you as I'm sure you're equally attracted to me if just now was any indication," he shot me a knowing smile receiving a nasty look from me in return.

"But I also like you hanging out with you and being around you. Last night was fun so yeah we can be friends. Strictly platonic unless you say otherwise." he finished.

I eyed him skeptically I could think about a hundred reasons why this was a bad idea. Our interaction last night and a minute ago proved that. I was so close to jumping in his arms, wrapping my legs around his waist, and letting him make good on what he whispered in my ear.

All these should be well enough reasons for me to say no because our being friends could easily become messy and end in a huge disaster. But instead of saving myself from the drama that was sure to follow, I found myself blurting out. "Sure, we can be friends."

I don't know what it was about Brooks that I always seemed to be acting out of character in his presence. Just last night I said I was had to keep my distance and now I agreeing to be his friend.

A slow triumphant smile spread across his handsome face. "Great, so what are we doing tonight? Do you want to go get something to eat at Millie's?" he asked referring to a diner in town.

"I already made spaghetti and meatballs for dinner," I told him albeit I could eat one of Millie's cheeseburgers.

"I love spaghetti and meatballs, I join you," he quirked an eyebrow before continuing. "So are you going to let me in or are you going to leave me out here the entire night?"

Rolling my eyes at him I shuffled off to the side allowing him to walk past me and into our small foyer.

Closing the door behind I turned and walked ahead with him trailing after me as I entered the living room. Stopping in the middle of the room I turned to face Brooks whose gaze was pinging in all directions around our living room. Before his gaze fell on me. "Nice, place," he said.

"Thanks," I pointed to the couch. "You can sit on the couch while I go get the food." I offered.

He shook his head before a spoke. "Nah, I'll come and help you bring it I'm a gentleman after all," he flashed me a playfully smile.

"Gentleman my ass," I mumbled under my breath before turning and walking away. But apparently, he heard me because he laughed as he followed me down the hall towards the kitchen.

When we entered the kitchen, Brooks took a seat on one of the barstools by the kitchen island while I walked to the sink and washed my hands before drying them on a dishrag.

"How long have you guys lived here?" he asked his gaze fixed on me while I transferred the cookies I took out of the oven earlier onto a cooling rack.

"Since freshman year, my parents brought it for us because I wasn't sold on living in the dorms," I scrunched up my nose. "Communal, showers were not appealing to me."

I loved our house. It was tiny in comparison to the houses both Mia and I grew up in especially mine but it was home for the last couple of years.

He snickered. "Yeah, well I could see how that would be unappealing for some people, but in my case, I was used to it due to spending most of my time in locker rooms,"

"Where is Mia, by the way?" he asked as if he now realized he hadn't seen her since he arrived.

I grabbed two navy blue ceramic bowls out of the cabinet. "She went out with Nate," I said turning my back to him as I filled one with spaghetti and meatballs and proceeded to do the same with the next bowl.

He had a pensive look on his face. "That explains why Nate was no longer sulking when he left the house.

I chuckled just imagining Nate sulking. "Mia was the same way today before they made up." Brooks and I shared a light laugh at our friend's antics.

"Here you can take these to the living room." I placed the bowls of spaghetti in front of him. I point over my shoulder. "You can wash your hands in the sink."

Nodding his head he got up from his seat and walked to the sink to wash his hands.

I strode towards the fridge opening the door I peeped my head in. "What do you want to drink?" I asked him I bent over a little to look at what we had. When he didn't answer I lift my head to look at him but his gaze was focused on my ass.

I cleared my throat, which got his attention. "Friends remember or did you forget that already," I said with a playful smile.

He gave me a sheepish smile. "I was just admiring your braids, it looks good by the way I forgot to tell you that."

I laughed while rolling my eyes. "Mhmm, you're full of shit." He laughed loudly his blue eyes twinkling with amusement.

"So, what do your want to drink?" I asked him again. "We have beer, water, coke, orange, and apple juice take your pick."

"I'll take a beer," he told me as picked up the bowls containing the food and made his way out of the kitchen. I grabbed a beer and a bottle of water before following him out of the kitchen.

Seconds later we entered the living, Brooks placed the bowls on the coffee table and took a seat on the couch making himself comfortable.

I placed our drinks down on the table taking a seat beside Brooks on the couch leaving a wide enough space between us.

"So what are we watching?" Brooks asked twisting the cap off his beer and taking a sip. "Not criminal minds hope."

I giggled as I grabbed the remote from the table switching on the TV. "No, I was going to watch Jane the Virgin, but you'll be lost since I'm almost finished with season two," I told him clicking on Netflix. "You'll be lost so we can watch a movie instead,"

"Nah, we can watch Jane the Virgin, I'm on the first episode of season three," he replied picking up his bowl of spaghetti and taking a bite. "This is good," he complimented me when he swallows.

I fixed my shocked gaze on him. "You watch Jane the Virgin?" I asked him the surprise evident in my voice.

Nodding his head he swallowed another bite "Yeah," he looked at me. "Why do you seem surprised?"

I shrugged my shoulders. "It doesn't seem like something you'll watch."

"It isn't, but my younger sister got me hooked on it." he smiled a small indulgent smile as if remembering his sister.

"Do you have any siblings?" he asked curiously.

I nod my head. "Yes, two younger brothers their twins," I said. "Is she your only sibling?" I inquired.

He shook his head jaw clenching before he answered. "No, I have an older a bother," he seems calm but I could detect the disdain and bitterness in his tone.

Hmm, he obviously had issues with his older brother.

Clearing his throat he changed the subject. "So, are we going to start the show or what?" he grinned at me.

"Before we start I have a question to ask you," my tone was serious.

"Okay hit me," he said giving me his full attention.

"Are you team Raphael or Micheal?" I asked a grin spreading across my face.

"Oh, team Raphael all the way," he responded seriously before taking a sip of his beer.

"Thank God, because I don't think this friendship would have worked out if you gave me the wrong answer," I told him we both started at each other before we broke out in laughter.

Clicking on the episode, my attention shifted toward the tv before I picked up my bowl and leaned back on the couch as the show started.
