《Mianite- The Alternate Heroes' Journey》Mot: Death of a Friend, Revival of Another

We entered an enormous cavern. In the middle stood a wide stone platform, with Dianite's body on it. Behind the platform was a row of massive boxes, and long tubes stretching up from them. What seemed to be a throne was embedded in the mountain on the right, and everything else was dark. We carefully climbed across the cavern to get to the platform, where we could conduct the revival ritual.

"So, how exactly is this going to work?" I asked Dianite as we approached his body. "What's the process going to be?"

"All of the crypt items need to go in the boxes around my body," Dianite said, instructing the others at the same time. "Then, my personality will flow from those tubes into the boxes, starting the revival process. As long as the amount of quintessence we gathered was enough, it will work."

"I've got my kikoku!" Jericho said. He approached one of the boxes and gingerly placed the blade inside of it. It immediately began to dissolve into the box. Once it was completely gone, a green liquid began to flow out of one of the tubes, filling a box. One-fifth of his personality was flowing in.

I followed Sparklez next, who placed the Interloper (recovered by Wisdom, thankfully) and the Providence into two more boxes. Tom, Firefoxx, and Waglington put their crypt items in, and the revival process was complete. We stepped back and looked to Deviser Gaines, who was scribbling something onto a clipboard.

"Dianite's personality is flowing in at exactly the right rate," he muttered. "Everything seems to be going perfectly. My calculations seem to be correct so far." Deviser Gaines looked up proudly, but then saw that Mianite was frowning. "Is something wrong?"

"Yes." The god said one word, and then fell silent again, looking back and forth from Dianite's body to the personality boxes.

"But everything's adding up!" Gaines cried, flipping wildly through the papers on his clipboard.

"No, it's not." Mianite fell silent again, and observed the ritual for a while. Finally, the boxes filled up completely, and nothing happened. "What we have isn't enough to bring Dianite back."

"But... but we have enough quintessence!" Deviser stammered, squinting at the papers as if he eyes were deceiving him.

"Yes, we do. But it's going to take more than the quintessence from mere objects to bring Dianite back. I'm sorry to tell you guys this, but it's going to take a serious connection to the god to bring him back. We're going to need a devout follower of Dianite to sacrifice themselves so he can't return," Mianite answered, surveying the crowd for volunteers.

I stood completely still for a minute, terrified. My palms began to sweat, and I felt as if my entire world was collapsing. Which, technically, it was about to.

In a trance, I started to walk forward, but I was quickly stopped by someone. Farmer Steve put a hand on my shoulder and held me back. "Mot, this isn't for you to do."

"He... he said a devout follower," I told him, my voice barely audible. I didn't want to die. I had just gotten my daughter back, and we were about to move on to another realm and live a happy life. But my god came first, and I knew that.

"Dad, please don't!" Alyssa pushed through the crowd and grabbed my arm insistently, making sure I didn't try to walk forward anymore.

"Do... do I have to sacrifice myself?" Tom asked, his black eyes seemingly filled with fear.

"No," Farmer Steve said firmly. "This is for me to do." He pushed past me to walk forward, but someone in the crowd let out a whimper.

"Steve... no... I can't lose you too!" Martha cried, gripping onto Waglington's arm for comfort. "You... I..." She didn't know what to say.

"Just let me do this!" I yelled. "Let me do this for all of you!" Everyone started to yell at once, and the people who weren't yelling were shaking in the back, not knowing what to do.

"STOP!" We jumped as Dianite himself screamed over the crowd. "There is no way to truly tell who should or should not sacrifice themselves, but I'm telling you that Mot is not that person. Boyo, please, don't do this."

I shrank backward. From the back of the crowd, Tom's voice, although quiet, carried over the crowd. "Do... do I have to?"

"No!" Steve walked up to Dianite's body, next to Mianite. "This is something I, and only I, have to go."

"You're sure about this?" Mianite asked, although he looked like he didn't really care.

"Yes." His voice filled with confidence, Steve stood over Dianite's body, and died instantly. As his form shattered, the pieces seemed to seep into Dianite. Steve was becoming a part of him.

Martha was crying quietly onto Waglington's shoulder, but other than that, everyone was silent. Gaines rushed to the end of the platform, and confirmed that the personality boxes were completely filled up. We all stood in a circle around the outside, and watched as the ritual began.

A blinding light erupted from the center, and Dianite began to get up. He stood, bathing in the light, and looked down at each of his limbs as if he couldn't believe he had them. For the first time in ten years, my god had a body again.

"How do you feel?" Mianite asked hesitantly as the light began to fade away.

Dianite's mouth curved into an enormous smile, and joy filled my heart. "I feel great!"

"Might want to wash those clothes, though," Gaines joked, wrinkling his nose. "You've been laying in that for ten years in this cave."

"Yeah, I could go for a shower, to be honest," Dianite laughed. "And then afterwards, a right rumble." While the others were laughing at his Steve impression, the god turned and winked at me.

I realized suddenly that "right rumble" could have another definition, and that definition made me happy beyond explanation.

"Well, we better get out of here," Gaines said, putting away his clipboard. "Is everyone ready? We're going to have to devise a plan to get from here to the personality boxes without injuring ourselves. The portal is behind it."

Dianite stepped carefully down the platform and walked over to me. "Feels great to have limbs again."

"So you can walk now instead of hovering next to us?" I asked, smiling up at his beautiful face, which I hadn't seen in over a decade.

"Well, that, but also to do this." He took a step closer to me and put his arms around me, hugging me tightly for a few seconds. "That's to make up for all the times when I wanted to hug you, but couldn't."

I felt my face turning bright red. "Oh... well... that's a good use of limbs as well."

Dianite grinned at me, and began to walk off the platform with the others.

None of us made it off the platform.

Because, just my luck, that's when everything went wrong.

Again.
