《Mianite- The Alternate Heroes' Journey》Mot: Martha's Nightmare

Me and Sparklez had met with Mianite and Deviser Gaines to discuss making a body for Dianite. "It would only be temporary, of course," Dianite explained to me. "But we don't know how long it'll take to find the other 'Horcruxes' and gather enough quintessence to bring me back. So I figured that we could build a Tartarite figure for me to use."

"Like a mech suit?" Sparklez asked, his eyes widening in fascination. What a nerd.

Dianite laughed. "Pretty much."

"But it would require a lot of Tartarite," Deviser Gaines said, frowning at Sparklez. "I'm not sure how you could get that much."

He shrugged. "Well, I can contribute, can't I?" When Dianite gave him approval, he turned to leave. "I'll go mining, I guess. I'l need to gather some..."

Suddenly, a shrill scream sounded. It didn't appear to have come from someone in the room, but from somewhere... inside my head? Everyone else seemed equally shocked, so I guessed that the scream had appeared in their minds as well. Who was communicating with us like this? It seemed to be a female screaming.

Help me, please! The voice belonged to Martha. I could see Sparklez's eyes widen in horror. I don't know where I am. I was in my Thaumcraft room, and now I'm not. I'm in some sort of cage, I think. Please, please help me! She let out another high-pitched wail.

"Are you guys hearing this too?" I asked, looking around at each of them. They all nodded fearfully, and I could feel Dianite shift closer to me.

"Boyo, you and Sparklez better go look. Get the others, too. I think Jericho and Waglington are nearby. They can help you." He sounded even more worried than the rest of them.

"Got it," Sparklez said, nodding at me. The two of us raced into the clearing near Martha's house. The pretty house stood unaffected by the quintessence drain, but there was an enormous jagged crack that had split open an area right next to it. It exposed her Thaumcraft room, where she had apparently been when she disappeared. Sparklez and I flew down into the room, and took a look around. The wizard and Jericho were right behind us.

It's really dark, please hurry! Martha screamed. Poor Waglington, Martha's boyfriend, looked like he might faint. Sparklez pushed through a metal door and entered a larger section of the basement. We found, to our horror, what seemed to be Martha's body on the floor. Upon looking closer, however, we found that she was actually asleep. How was she communicating with us while asleep?

"She's in the dream world," Jericho said, taking off his ridiculous scaly helmet to take a closer look. "We'll need take brews of sleeping to get into her dream and save her, I guess."

I felt Dianite appearing behind me. "Could you make four brews of sleeping?" I asked him. "We need to enter her dream."

At the same time, all four of us gulped down the brews and immediately entered the dream world. We appeared in a tiny yellow and purple room, filled with chests. They contained many swords and pieces of armor, so we each took some to defend ourselves from whatever might be keeping Martha.

"I think this room represents her good dream," Sparklez told us, having studied the dream world. "But the only hallway leading out looks pretty dark. I don't like this invasion of privacy, but it seems like we're going to have to see what Martha's nightmares are."

Waglington was shaking slightly, gripping his sword tightly. "Let's just go. If we stick together, it won't be so bad."

That was good advice, except not in this situation. As we walked down the dark hallway, it seemed to split into dozens of paths. "Is this a maze?" I gasped, peering down another long hallway.

"I think so," Jericho said. "We are going to have to split up after all. Just remember to call the rest of us if you're in danger, or if you find something important. We don't know how far this maze stretches."

Terrified, I watched as each of them took a separate path. I followed Sparklez for a few feet, and then went off onto my own path. Everything was extremely dark and slightly foggy. I made sure to feel around with my sword before walking anywhere, to avoid stepping into a trap.

I didn't come across anything for a while, until I saw a small light ahead. Hopeful, I made my way over to it. As I got closer and closer, however, I saw that the light was coming from lava. A pool of the substance was flowing in a circle. As I stared into it, I saw the face a man I knew very well- Spark.

He's gone now, Martha, a voice hissed from somewhere inside the lava. You can't rely on him anymore, and now you can see that you're useless without someone to guide you.

Shuddering, I moved past it. Was that how Martha felt about Spark? Had I made a mistake leaving him and the others back at the Realm of Mianite? I didn't have time to think about it for long, because I reached another light. This time, it was a ring of fire, with a statue of Lady Ianite. The statue seemed to be slowly melting.

But she would always be around for you, right? Wrong. Lady Ianite's gone too. Now it's up to you to be the great things that she was. I stared in horror at the melting statue, and figured it was best to move past it. As I turned the corner, I saw a figure that looked like a much scarier version of Mianite. You'll never be your mother.

I couldn't escape these thoughts anymore. Everywhere I turned, there was more of them. I can't believe both of them are gone. Was both of them referring to Spark and Ianite? Even Sparklez calls me salty. I flinched at that one.

And then, probably the most shocking, was when I reached a small forest filled with apple trees. They always reminded me of you, the voice said. Wondering who "you" could be, I took a look around and saw a picture of Farmer Steve on the wall. I still love you, you know. I didn't mean to hurt you. I want you back.

I wasn't supposed to be seeing this. I didn't want to be seeing this. I started to run- straight into Jericho. I fell to the ground, and he quickly helped me up. When I was on my feet again, he pointed to a door with his sword.

"We have to go, quickly. Martha's in there, and I can't take much more of these nightmares," he said. I nodded in agreement, and we dashed for the door. I threw it open, and found a shaking Martha standing in a box. Waglington and Sparklez were standing around her, trying desperately to comfort her.

"Can... can you let me out?" she whispered. None of us had pickaxes on us, but Sparklez was able to pry the cage open with his sword. The metal bars fell to the floor, and Martha stepped out.

"We need to get out of here," I said. "Does anyone have an icy..."

"NO!" All five of us jumped at... was it Dianite's voice? "Are you just going to give up? Run back to your little safe land? That's what you always do, Martha. Where is the courage you said you had?"

"Dianite?" I gasped, but the spirit of my god ignored me.

"Nobody is on your side anymore," he snarled. "You let everyone down. Nobody's even following you! You dumped Farmer Steve for this wizard, and then you break up with him over a dagger? And now you want Steve back? How much more selfish can you get? When are you going to realize that nobody actually likes you?"

Martha began to sob, and Sparklez ran over and wrapped her in his arms. "Martha, it's just a dream. This isn't Dianite. I'm your follower, and so are the rest of us. We all love you, and you aren't selfish."

Waglington approached her hesitantly. "We all believe in you."

She stared blankly at the wizard for a minute, then stepped away from Sparklez. "Maybe... maybe you're right. But Dianite is right about something, I can't run away from this nightmare. I have to be brave! I can't just walk away... like I always do."

"But..." Jericho began, but Martha pushed past all of us and continued into the dream maze. The five of us raced after her. When we caught up, we saw her standing in a pink, heart-shaped room, crying again.

"What is this?" I asked, walking to stand next to her. A chest, filled with icy needles, sat in the middle of the room. A picture of Lady Ianite was carved into the wall.

Remember, Martha, the room spoke in Ianite's voice, even goddesses have fears.

"What does this mean?" Waglington asked.

Without responding, Martha gingerly lifted up an icy needle and held it over her arm. Each of us did the same.

"I'm ready to go back," she said firmly. As we pricked ourselves together, something similar to a smile appeared on her face.

We landed back in the real world, and got to our feet. When we turned around to see if Martha was okay, we saw that she was glowing and floating through the air.

"What's going on?" I cried, watching armor form on top of her.

She grinned down at Sparklez, who looked like he couldn't believe his eyes. "I did it. I became a goddess."
