《Maeve》ChapterFortyThree: The Funeral

It was a sad day.

Everyone was crying, even the sky above them.

Maeve was standing next to an old oak, an oak that almost was once her lifesaver. Maids and servants from the castle were standing next to her as some of them threw soil into the hole on the ground.

Finally, it was the day when Cory got her peace.

Maeve would have wanted to invite Ethen at the Funeral, but because no one knew where he was it was impossible. Rumors say that Ethen would have stabbed himself on his chest, where his heart lays. If that is the truth Maeve really hopes that they will reunite again, in heaven.

Neither of them was perfect: Cory was a girl who deserver more than this world had to offer and Ethen, on the other hand, had everything he would have ever desired but Fate gave her a mate that didn't desire anything.

She watched as her best friend was buried on the ground.

She didn't cry as she had expected. At some point, you have no tears left to cry.

All the emotions of losing somebody came back to her mind. But now she wasn't alone anymore: now she had a family.

Now she had a beautiful and healthy son and a mate. Still, their relationship wasn't the best. They had many unsolved problems that they needed to deal with. It was also clear that Dominic would never be her prince charming. Even if he would have wanted to he couldn't.

She had grown to love him at some point, now she wasn't sure about her emotions anymore. A big part of her wanted to love him. She wanted to have her happy ending with him but the emotions she once felt were not as strong as they used to be.

As the people around her started to leave Maeve stayed behind. Only if she would have Cory or her mom who she would be able to talk about her feelings.

When they came back after the whole Foley hassle both of them were tired.

They didn't talk about him or about Oliver nor even about why she escaped. They were quiet almost all of the time while they came back. Because Maeve was so worn off Dominic carried her at the back of his wolf.

It was definitely a bumpy ride but it beat walking.

When they reached the castle Maeve went to took a bath and a huge meal. A doctor came to check on her and the baby and luckily both of them were fine. She didn't see Dominic that night or at the next one.

It almost felt like he was avoiding her. It felt weird because after all they had been separated for months.

Was it hard for him to take another person in his life?

Maeve didn't notice the large figure walking towards her. The raining had gotten harder and it was almost impossible to see ahead. She was as wet as if she would have dived into a lake.

She didn't notice him before a hand was put over her shoulders. "Where's Cearul?" She yelled over the rain.

"With a maid," Dominic answered shortly.

Their son had been born a few weeks back. It wasn't easy or pleasant to Maeve, but she survived and from that she is glad. Usually, humans don't survive from giving birth to a supernatural. She probably wouldn't have if her father wouldn't have been a werewolf.

She would have died of internal bleeding sooner or later.

The baby was as gorgeous as his parents. He had inherited his father's eyes and hair but when his eyes were closed Maeve could see some of Will in him. They share the same face structure, you could see it even though Cearul is only a baby. And that is why Maeve wanted his second name to be William.

She also hoped that the little child would grow to be someone who isn't selfish and who takes care of others, just like a good king should be.

Her mate kissed her forehead as they stared at the wet ground where her friend was.

"Why didn't you give me her body sooner?"

"Because of the sadness, a person feels when they stare at the body and know that their close one is no longer there. The body is just a stranger with a familiar face."

The next day Maeve found Tommy on her room. It was a true miracle how the little mouse had stood next to her so long and even after it escaped kilometers away from the castle it still found his way to her. Maeve couldn't be any more grateful to the little mouse who she met by accident and ever since they have been together.

Although Tommy didn't seem the same mouse as he did before. Was it just her eyes or had he gotten little heftier on the sides?

"I still don't understand why you haven't gotten rid of that thing," Dominic murmured as he leaned on the door frame.

"He is my friend," Maeve muttered and took the mouse on her lap.

No matter how important a friend the rat was to her, Dominic didn't like it. It was probably filled with decreases and ready to bite his mate at every chance it got. But nothing bad would ever happen to Tommy, not as long as Maeve would be breathing.

That night they were together, not in a sexual way but just together. They ate a meal together for the first time ever and the kitchen lady once threw her out had been kicked out of the castle. The new chef was much more positive and his cookings were even better than his predecessor. While they were eating the servant that helped her with her dress a long time ago, Roy was looking after the boy with a maid called Emma, who also happened to be Cory's friend.

"I never thought that I would be eating here," Maeve mumbled. Dominic raised his eyebrow.

"I literally thought that I would spend the rest of my bloody life on that cell before barbarians would shred me into pieces," she said sarcastically. It actually felt amazing to be sarcastic for the first time in forever. Finally, was she getting her life back on tracks.

"Sorry about that," the King muttered and took a gulp from his wine.

Maeve looked at the goblet in front of her and lifted it to her lips. The taste of the red liquid filled her mouth making her day even better. Even if they didn't share any features at least they shared a common love to wine.

After dinner, they went to the library. It had become a place where both of them came to relax. Maeve sat on the couch as Dominic put fire on the fireplace before sitting next to her.

"You do know that I am a human and that will never change," Maeve whispered. She knew that one of the reasons why he hates her is that she is human. "And that your son is one-third of a human."

Dominic stayed quiet.

It was no surprise to anyone that she hated humans from the bottom of his heart, in some way he still did and that is a thing that will probably never change. He can't change the way he was raised in this world.

"I know."

He leaned closer to her until his mouth was next to her ear, "And I will always hate humans."

Every scene she had thought of their future ended at that moment. She hated to know that something that she had no power over to has shaped someone's opinion about her forever.

"Although, there is one human who I don't hate."

And that is how the human and the beast kept living their life together in the bad and good times.
