《Maeve》ChapterTwentySix: A Shooting Star

"Will?"

She recognized those eyes. From her siblings, everyone but William had hazel eyes. Will's eyes were the most beautiful shade of blue she had ever seen. They reminded her of a lake she always swam when she was young. Everything seemed right unless the fact that a giant wolf stood in front of her with her brother's eyes.

Will couldn't be a werewolf like Dominic and the others, right? There is no way that is possible, Maeve thought. Their mother was a human and like her Maeve is definitely not a rabid coyote. Unless their father was a werewolf? That can't be right because if William is a shapeshifter she should be one too? After all, they share the same father or that is at least what Alison told her.

The beast in front of her blinked and took a step back. Did it understand what Maeve said? The wolf looked like he would be having a serious conversation with himself before taking another step towards Maeve and snarling.

Suddenly she felt really sick and threw up the contents of her stomach in front of the wolf's claw.

"Oh, God," She whispered and tried to control herself. She didn't want to be weak in front of the wolf who looked at her weirdly. The first time she had ever seen a wolf was in The Chase when a ten of those were running after her trying to get her hand as a snack.

The taste in her mouth made her want to throw up again but the little self-control she had left kept her from doing it again. That wolf would probably eat her in one bite if she does it again.

She looked again straight into the wolf's eyes.

There is no way that monster can be her brother. Will would have told her and she would have understood in some way.

What if?

Thoughts were running through her mind. Her head started to ache from thinking all the possible options. Before finally choosing to stand up and run for her life. When she stood up whit shaking legs she took another look at the wolf.

The wolf looked old. Not, like an oldster wolf but she had seen Dominic in his wolf form once and his wolf form looked younger than the beast in front of her. Will was only four years older than her.

"W-who are you?" She squirmed not knowing why she was talking to the animal. The only reason she could think of was that if the wolf in front of her was the person she thought he is, Will would give her some kind of sign. He would lift his ears and show his tongue to signal Maeve that he is true and safe like he did when they were little. After that Maeve would hug him and rise on his back and go back home.

The wolf just stood there and snarled.

"D-definitely not Will," She mumbled to herself. But who then is standing in front of her with an exact copy of her brother's eyes. The animal took few steps closer to her that made Maeve back away few steps until her back was touching a tree. She wanted to run towards the castle, as Cato told her to but she had learned that wolves are thousand times faster than her especially when in the last few days she had felt herself becoming clumsier.

"CATO!!!" She screamed from the bottom of her lungs. She could never take a wolf down but another wolf could. Seconds passed by and the wolf stared at her with his blue eyes and no Cato was on sight. It was weird that the rapid coyote just stood there and didn't do anything and that was the thing that scared Maeve the most. If he didn't want to eat her then why didn't he just walk away and if he was going to eat her then why didn't he just do it already?

Okay, I can do this, Maeve told herself and started to take few steps away from the beast in front of her.

Two steps.

Three.

Four.

Just a few steps more before she can start running away.

Six.

Seven.

She turned her back quietly and took steps more active. Her heart was racing fast and her head started to spin again. The nausea was making its way back into Maeve's thoughts. After she had taken ten steps away from the wolf she started to run.

Run as she had done in The Chase and in Caspians execution. After a little sprint, the forest around her spun like she was in the middle of a tornado. Everything was blur even the voices she could hear behind her. Someone or something was running after her. She can only wish that it isn't the wolf and that he had decided to eat her as a dinner.

A big rock far away in her sight looked like it was coming towards her in a way it wasn't possible. Her legs betrayed her and she falls towards the rock. The human didn't scream or shout she just laid in there her right hand bloody. The rock had cut her right elbow making it bleed at a fast speed.

She detected someone walking towards her but she couldn't recognize the character. Her sight was blurry and the world was still spinning.

"Shit!" The person walking towards her cursed. It was the voice of a male.

Maeve sat there leaning on the rock. She turned to look at him. His face was familiar but she couldn't recognize him. But what she did recognize were his eyes, the brightest shade of blue looking straight to her.

"G-go away," she shuttered. She didn't know who he was and what his plans on her were but she did know that she wanted to be in the castle with a warm blanket around her. That male with her brother's eyes looked at her like she was a lost treasure. His dark grey hair shine against the stars on the sky.

The man took a few steps closer to her not bothering her demands.

"Go away!" She yelled. Her head hurt and it felt like she was going to throw up again. The last thing she needed at this moment was an unknown man kidnapping her. She curled up putting her head in her lap.

She felt a warm hand on her shoulder, "GO AWAY!" She screamed.

"If you want me to leave you here that is fine with me," an awfully familiar voice snapped.

She looked at the person who talked and jumped to cry on his shoulder. Cato froze from her act and ripped her off of him. He didn't need tears to stain his favorite shirt. The gray-haired man was nowhere to be seen.

"Let's go," he murmured and started to drag the human behind him. They walked in the dark wood for a while before Maeve stopped.

"Walk," he commanded without even turning to look at her.

"I-i c-can't," she shuttered before barfing on the ground. "I feel s-sick."

The look on the betas face was far from amusing. He looked like he could rip her head off and eat it to the coyotes. Of course, she had to become sick in the middle of everything. Maybe he should have left her next to the rock and let Harred take her and then she would have been a pain on his ass.

He grabbed her small hand on his larger one and started to drag her again, but now in a much slower motion. They weren't far from the castle.

Cato dreamed of dumping her into some cave and pick her up tomorrow but he also knew that would cost him his head.

"Can you walk any faster," he snapped and tried to drag her faster but it seemed like she was fighting back even more now.

"My head h-hurts," she protested.

"Yeah, mine too. Now let's go before I leave you here."

"Why are you so m-mean to me?" The human had really thought that they were friends after he showed her around and they talked but now he was back being grumpy and mean. There was nothing she could do about the pain in her head.

"Me? Being mean? What are you talking about," he grumbled sarcastically and tried to drag her again but Maeve didn't allow her to take another step with him before he is kind to her.

"First you w-were mean and then kind and t-then again mean. Why?"

Cato blinked. Did he really have to tell to this human his life story that he can go back inside with his head still on? In the last few weeks, the girly had apparently grown a backbone and that if what annoyed him a lot. Why didn't he just leave with The King? Everything would be much easier and someone else would have been the human's babysitter.

Why did he have to be such a big idiot and take her out for a walk? Why did he think that it would be good for her to get some fresh air and learn something new?

"Let's go."

"No," Maeve said and took a step away from him.

"Yes, either you walk or I carry you." He grumbled.

"N-neither." Cato wanted to hit himself with a huge stick on the face. Even that would be easier than to deal with the annoying child. He knew that she was eighteen but sometimes like now she acts like a goddammit five-year-old. Heck, he guessed that she had been the most annoying five-year-old ever.

She sat on the ground and stared straight into his eyes with a daring look.

The beta wanted to rip something in half and throw her to the nearby river. She would totally deserve it in Cato's mind.

"Is it because I'm h-human?"

No answer.

"O-or because I'm short?"

Still, no answer.

"Because I'm your King's mate?"

Cato kept his mouth shut.

"Do you hate me because of Tommy?" She whispered tears forming in her eyes.

Cato looked at the crying girl. God, that he wishes that he would be somewhere else than here looking at the human crying. He never liked to watch a girl cry but the girl in front of him seemed to cry almost every day from different things. Cato swears that she probably cries when she squishes a bug.

He rubbed his eyes. "Can we just go back to the castle?" Truly, that is the only thing he wanted at that moment. "You can drink some hot drinks and sleep under a warm blanket," he said trying to calm her down. He didn't even know if she gave a shit about hot chocolate but it was worth to try.

The thought of her favorite drink made Maeve's abdomen grumble in hunger. The last time she ate was at noon and now it was almost night. She had also been way hungrier than usual. As much as her body screamed for food her mind was stronger.

"I want to k-know why you hate me?"

Cato rolled his eyes. He could see the hunger in her eyes but like he said before she is really stubborn when she wants to be.

He walked to her and sat to the ground next to her. "Hate is a strong word."

Maeve turned to look straight into his eyes.

"The word I would use is disliked but sometimes you are in some weird way..." He stopped in the middle of his sentence trying to find the right word, "nice if you aren't as stubborn as fuck like right now."

She didn't know was that more like a compliment or insult.

"You are not n-nice."

Cato turned his head and lifted his right eyebrow.

"I'm just kidding, you are nice sometimes l-like, right now." She laughed. After that, either one of them said a word. They sat in a complete silence and it felt good. Not like that awkward silence but the comfortable one.

The cold wind brushed past them signing that it wasn't summer yet.

"D-do you know when he is c-coming back?" Maeve asked. She had to, she missed him in a weird way. Her heart was screaming towards him no matter how far way he was. She loved him and knew that he will never answer her feelings. It hurt her more than anything else.

"Soon enough, girly, soon." He muttered and turned to look towards the stars. He saw a shooting star and rolled his eyes. It is only a childish believe that you can wish something when you see one and it will come true.

"Cato, did you see that?!" Maeve yelled. She had never seen a shooting star before and it was so beautiful that she wanted to remember it forever.

"Did you make a wish?" He asked.

The human nodded and turned to look at the sky again.

"Me too," The beta murmured.
