《Maeve》ChapterTen: Tomatoes

Cato was sitting on the throne. He knew that if his best friend would walk in he would join Caspian. Or even worse his Mother. He got goosebumps all over his body. Only by thinking about the reunion with his Mother. That reunion wouldn't be one of those where the people run towards each other. More likely his Mother would give him slap in the face. He had also ordered some weakly soldier whose name he didn't even remember to arrange the execution for the human.
He didn't understand the King.
First, he got a mate. Well, he never wanted a mate but still, he found his other half. Then he arranges a Chase where she would definitely die, but the King decided to save her and kill all of the rogues. He certainly didn't know how hard it was to catch them. Then he decides to let her rot in that cell but a few days after that he decided that they will execute her. And why does he do all of this? Because his mate is a human and not a werewolf.
He should just accept her as a mate or let Cato rip her heart out.
All problems would be solved. But his friend is so stubborn that he doesn't want to mate her or let Cato kill her.
Tomorrow is the day when she will be executed. But Cato knew that she isn't going to die tomorrow. The Kings wolf is too strong and already devoted to a human girl called Maeve. Cato himself would do anything to even find his mate, he wouldn't care if she is a human. But fate has decided that he will not find her, at least not yet.
Maeve is not even ugly for a human. If she would be he would understand the Kings hate for her. But they tell that when you see your mate you will be attracted to him or her even if you hadn't ever seen him or her.
Cato laughed. The King sealed his own fate at that moment he wanted a new plaything. Little did he know that the soldiers would bring his mate with them. But fate likes to do little twists.
The doors bust open. Few soldiers walked inside to Cato's relief.
"Beta." They bowed.
"We're looking for the King. Have you seen him?" One of the guards asks. How on earth they don't know where he is. He has disappeared and no one will probably see him before tomorrow or the day after that. Everybody knows that and that is the reason why Cato is sitting on his throne. That is not even so soft as like it looks.
"No."
"All is ready to tomorrows beheading." The other says this time.
"Good. Leave." They bowed again and left as quickly as they came.
Now Cato realized why they looked so familiar. Those guards were those he ordered to arrange the beheading. It was a big surprise that they actually managed to do it. Maybe he should respect the castle's guard more. At least they do like it's told unlike the King, who is too stubborn for his own good.
Well, it is not Cato's problem when the King will kneel in front of that human girl. It is just a matter of time before he will give up. The mate bond is very strong and now they will see if it's even stronger than the King.

That is a fight Cato can't and will not miss.
Unlike Cato who was sitting on a beautiful throne, Maeve was sitting on the ground. Where else she even could sit? There is literally nothing in the cell she was in. No bed, no chair, and no running water. There was only a basket what she could use as a bathroom.
Next to Maeve sat a mouse called Tommy. If you didn't have a good sight you would probably even miss him. The color of his fur is grey, the same color as the brick walls and floor.
She is sitting in the middle of the cell and is staring at the wall next to her. Something bad is going to happen, she could feel it. The evilness in the air. Blood will be shed tomorrow and it will probably be hers. There was no other prisoner in the dungeon, she was all alone. When she came into this cell the first time there were many other prisoners. Almost fifty if she counted right. They all have been killed except the few exceptions, they killed themselves.
Maeve could hear the voices of torture in her head. When there is a pure silence you start to hear voices of your own, Maeve's voices were those. Pleading for mercy, screaming and yelling because of pain, the sound of bones being broke, torturers laughing, she could even smell blood. Or maybe the smell of blood came for her own cell. Only God knew how many souls have been killed in there.
"Good night Tommy," Maeve whispered and gave a kiss on the mouses head.
The next day shall come including all the bad things and evilness in it. After all, no one can stop the time, even if you would want to do it sometimes.
The next day came sooner than anybody would have wanted, the day of Maeve's execution.
Soldiers came into Maeve's cell and started to drag her like she would be a doll. People gathered to the market square to see the beheading of a human. Many thought that humans don't even exist anymore so it was a big miracle that their King will execute one.
The market square is full of people. There are werewolves and few witches. Witches are selling some potions and herbs that aren't even working.
Soldiers have been informed that the risk of some kind of attack is higher than usual. Many soldiers are even disguised as an old woman or a loving husband. If someone or something is going to attack, the attacker will be dead.
The royal Beta walked to a balcony to watch the beheading with the rest of the rulers of The Kingdom.
The only person who is missing is the King. No one had seen or heard of Dominic Deàsun.
No one even knew where he was. There are many rumors where he would be. Some believed that their King had left to fight on war with his soldiers. Others thought that he is in a secret meeting. But the most ridiculous rumor is that the King is dead.
Cato couldn't understand who is so stupid to believe in that. Everybody knew that it would take more than a sword to kill the King.
Looks filled with curiosity and disgust filled the air, as Maeve came into view. Nobody did understand why the King saved her in the Chase and how did that little human managed to survive in the dungeon were even to bravest soldiers died after few days.

But not her. She is like a cockroach under a bloody ax. Always finds a way to survive.
"Beta." A commander bowed as he walked into the balcony.
"Ethen," Cato answered with a scowl. He never liked the commander of King's soldiers. There is something shady about him.
"A great day, isn't it?"
"Could be better."
"Oh, how? Sun is shining and a human is going to die. What could be better? And before I forgot to ask. May I know where is the King? It is not like him to miss an execution, especially when it is a human who is dying."
"You may not." First of all even Cato didn't know where to find his friend. If he wants to disappear, that is what he does. And second, even if he would have known, Ethen would be the last person he would tell.
"Why so grumpy?"
"Fück off. Or you could always join the dying human." That kept Ethen's mouth shut. Cato knew that if the King would be there, Ethen wouldn't have had the guts to speak like that. It is no secret that Ethen didn't like Cato and Cato didn't like Ethen.
Few other high ranked wolves came also to the balcony and bowed in front of The Royal Beta. But Cato didn't care. His eyes were onto the petite human girl, who stood tears in her eyes. She is scared.
"You noticed that too, my friend. She is beautiful, If I would have seen her earlier, I would have asked The King if I could have her for one night. But damn! Now it's too late."
Cato would have wanted to answer something like 'The King would have eaten your heart for breakfast if you would have done that.' But he knew that if he told anyone that the human girl is The Kings mate, it would have been his heart in the breakfast table.
"Too bad for you, then."
"Don't rub salt on my wounds."
That is when the announcer opened his mouth. "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE HAVE GATHERED HERE TO WATCH A HUMAN ACCUSED OF TREASON TO BE EXECUTED!!! I wanna welcome all of you to watch her head as it falls to the basket and doesn't forget to buy your tomatoes.
Human, do you confess your treason?!"
Cato almost did feel bad for Maeve. That girl didn't probably even know what 'treason' means. And now she is standing in front of tens of thousands werewolves and she should admit something she didn't certainly do.
Silence.
Maeve didn't answer anything. First of all, she didn't know what to answer and she has always had huge stage fright. If she had to say something to a big audience she usually passed out or started to shake uncontrollably. A big audience to her was about ten villagers in a spring celebration. Now she is standing in front of a giant werewolf mass.
"ANSWER!!" The man screamed.
"Not-not q-quilty." She whispered. Nobody probably heard her but at least she answered.
More tomatoes flew towards her.
"Guards! Put her head on the podium." And the guards did exactly what he told them to do. They grabbed Maeve on both arms and started to drag her. Maeve started to struggle and scream. She didn't want to die, not like this.
Her head would be hanged in some scary wall or showed into a stick, where vultures would eat her eyes.
When the guards finally managed to put her head onto a podium and hold her till she started to scream all kinds of pleads. She had heard stories how the beheaded could feel her or his head being chopped and being alive for few seconds after it. She didn't want to experience that.
"P-PLEASE!!!"
"DO-DON'T-N'T"
"Lea-leave me ALONE!"
But no one listened to her pleads. All they cared was throwing tomatoes at her or seeing her head being separated from her body.
"ANY LAST WORDS?"
Maeve stayed in a pure silence before screaming words so loud that everyone definitely heard her. She had no idea if she could do it but she didn't want to stay in history as a silent human.
"HUMANS HAVE A SOULS TOO!!!" There was a little moment of silence before everything exploded. People started to scream at her and throw more tomatoes. They were truly mad, and by what? Because Maeve screamed the truth and they wanted to live in the lie.
"If those were your last words. MAY THE BEHEADING START!"
After those words, everything blurred. She saw as the man in a black outfit with a hood that hid his face walk towards her. He stood next to her with an ax in his hands. That ax was already bloody and rusty.
In Maeve's last seconds she tried to find The King. There was something in him that drew her in. She wanted him to see her, his eyes on hers, to see his reaction when her head is chopped off. But he wasn't there. The Beta sat where The King should have sat. And the weirdest of all Maeve felt anxiety and worry if something has happened to him.
And that is crazy.
Well if she is going to die, she will see her family again and this time no one will ever separate them.
"ARE YOU FOOLS!!!" A voice yelled. The man next to Maeve stopped the ax and turned to stare at the stranger in a grey cloak.
"STOP THAT EXECUTION NOW!!! IF YOU DON'T YOUR KINGDOMS FUTURE WILL GO WITH HER HEAD."
"What do you mean stranger!?" Cato yelled. Of course, he knew what that old woman is talking about, but he couldn't tell that to the others.
"Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about Son of Dimitri. She is his mate and your Queen!" After saying that the ax from the man's hand flew away.
"Guards." Just like that hundreds of guards started to run towards the old woman. But before no one even realized she was gone.
Cato stared at the place where the old witch was. That hag just revealed the thing that will get Cato killed. She told everyone that the little human who is accused of treason is their Kings mate. The Kings who hate humans more than anything.
This is just great.
"Take her into one of the chambers." Long gone are those days in the cell, after all, now she is The Queen of Beasts. And what Queen sleeps with mice?
