《Maeve》ChapterSeven: The Chase
Advertisement
The Chase has been arranged two times before today. The rules are quite simple. The prey has to die, be chased and killed in front of the audience. The rogue who will kill the prey will be set free as a reward for killing the threat to the Kingdom.
In the first Chase, the prey was a man who tried to kill the Queen.
In the second Chase, the prey was one of the most known murderers known till this day.
In the third Chase, the prey will be a human girl.
The first man who ever had to die in the Chase survived five minutes before one of the rogues caught him. The second prey's Chase lasted fifteen minutes before he slipped and hit his head to a rock. Of course, the smell of blood attracted the rogues and a few seconds later there were ten different rogues fighting to get a piece of him to eat.
"Did you hear about the prey?" A little boy who was no older than ten summers asks.
"Oh, my son. Didn't you hear?" His mother whispered something so quiet after saying that, that the boy didn't hear what she said.
"I didn't hear you, Mother."
"It is a human." The boy was shocked.
"But Mother, humans are weak. I actually thought that humans are extinct."
"They almost did. When our former King was ruling the throne he arranged persecutions to humans. He truly hated them and passed that hate to his son."
"Oh." The boy said. He had heard some things about humans in school, but he never had heard about the persecutions. That is when he spotted his friend.
"Mother, can I go play with Lars?"
"If you promise that you don't eat, crawl or throw mud towards other people."
"I PROMISE!" Quickly after saying that he ran towards his best friend since born. Their fathers have always been good friends too.
Martha watched as her son ran away from her. 'They grow way too fast' she thought. Maybe she should have asked some witch to make a potion which will stop children from growing after reaching the age of five.
She had heard some rumors that the prey has been living in one of the castles cells for a few weeks. But if she has been alive for so long there must be something special on her. Like she said to her son the former King passed all of his hatred feelings for humans to his son. The former King was cruel and heartless but his son is something no one could have ever imagined. The King takes a good care of his Kingdom's citizens and protects them. She could have never prayed for a better King because every other creature in this world is too scared to attack into his Kingdom.
There are even rumors that soon the King will declare a war if he doesn't get more country.
"Oh, Martha!" The mother of one turned around and saw one of her closest friends.
"Lisa."

"Did you hear about the Chase?"
"Of course I did. I was actually walking towards the forest where it is held."
"May I join you?"
"What a friend would I be if I said 'no'? Let's go see that bitch get what she deserves."

Maeve looked herself in the mirror. She is wearing a white dress that is just to her knees. It doesn't even look like a dress more like a potato sack. It made her look even smaller than she already is.
She looks like a child wearing a dress from her mothers closet.
"I'm n-not a child." She said quietly to herself. She has always hated the way she looks because it makes her look many years younger than she is.
The mirror that reflects her body is clearly old and shattered. It also looks like someone has been killed right in front of it because it is full of blood stains. Maybe she is going to die too when she is looking through the mirror.
She wished that she could die, but still something inside of her tells that there is something in this world that she has to fix. Like her sister said, it is not her time yet.
"Girly!" A husky voice laughed. After that, the door that held her inside of the cell is opened and rough hands tie her hands together.
"Do you know what day is today?" The man who owned the voice asks. Maeve felt like her voice wouldn't even work if she would try to use it. So she shakes her head.
The man laughed.
"Well if that is the case, you are going to have an interesting day." After saying that he pulled a sack and put it onto her head.
Maeve started to struggle.
The darkness has returned.
"Stop struggling bitch."
"Dan what the fück are you doing!"
"Trying to keep this bitch still."
"Well, I don't think that the King will mind if you hit her or something."
"I don't hit women. Even if she is a human. She is a woman who looks like a child."
"I'm n-not a c-child." She muttered through the sack around her head. "I don't think that we asked you to speak. You will speak only when someone is speaking to you." They started to drag her out of her cell towards the stairs. But she kept struggling.
"Dan, you know that you said you don't hit women even if she is a human?"
"Yeah?"
"That doesn't mean that I couldn't hit her." After that, a massive pain hit her stomach. Maeve is sure that she even coughed some blood to the sack.
"Well bitch now if you stop struggling I'm not going to hit you again."
"Let's just take her to the forest. We both do know what the King will do to those who are late." A shiver ran in Dan's spine. He didn't want to join the pile of bodies.
"You're right."

Dominic watched as his people came to watch the Chase. He felt proud of himself that the people who worked under him arranged this in so short notice.
Today is also the day all of his problems will solve. He never wanted a mate and if he would have wanted she had to be a strong female werewolf that will rule beside him and bow before him. Instead of getting what he would have accepted he got a stinky little human mate. But after an hour she would be dead and he could walk as a mateless man again. No one will have to know that the Moon Goddess gave him such a weak mate.
"The King." His Beta said as he joined him. "Have you decided who will be the new Gamma?"
"I have someone in my mind."
"HOW MANY MINUTES WILL SHE SURVIVE?! MAKE A BET IN HERE!!" Someone yelled in the crowd. She is not going to survive even a minute. She is a human after all. The two preys before her were werewolves and men.
That is when's eyes found a human girl being dragged to where the Chase is going to start. She stumbled and tried to fight back. She is wearing a hideous white sack and her feet are bare. The sack on her head has some blood.
"Ladies and Gentlemen's I want to welcome all of you to this historical event. Today we will see how the rogues will hunt down our newest prey.
May I introduce you to our little human girl called Maeve!
Today she will run for her life and well we all do know how it will end. But like in the two earlier Chases the prey will get a two-minute head start.
One
Two
Three
RUN!"
***
The men who dragged her to the forest weren't the gentlest people she knew. The didn't care if she tripped, they just continued to drag her. Her knees skin is broken and bloody. The sack is bloody and dirty.
She didn't know where they were taking her or what is happening there. But she did know that whatever there will be it is not a good thing.
"...SHE SURVIVE?! MAKE A BET IN HERE!!"
"What is h-happening?"
"Just keep your mouth shut and run for your life."
That didn't make any sense in Maeve's head. Are they going to let her free or what? No, she forgot who she is dealing with. There is no way she will ever leave this place in any other form than a ghost.
Then she heard a man's voice. He explained something about history and stuff. She didn't care about it. The only thing in her head was a question; Where is she?
"...Maeve!" After hearing her own name something inside of her clicked. This is the Chase. She heard some stories about it by her Mother. But she always thought that they were all just rumors. No one can't be that cruel that they make a person run for his life knowing that he will die. And the death will be caused by rogues.
That is a cruel way to die.
And that is the way she is going to die.
"One, two, three, RUN!!" In that same second the sack over her head disappeared. Now she saw the environment she was in. It is a forest like she suspected from the men discussion. Maeve looked around her and noticed thousands of people gathered to watch her die.
Maeve's eyes found a pair of grey eyes staring at her.
They were the Kings.
She couldn't hold the feelings inside of her. She felt so betrayed and hurt that she started to cry.
"Girly? Didn't you hear me? RUN!" The same voice screamed at the microphone. And that is exactly what she did. She started to run so fast that far feet started to ache.
Maeve didn't know how far away she was when she heard the man screaming that the rogues are set free.
Should she be scared?
Yes. She definitely should be running to the hills and that is exactly what she is doing. Trying to reach some kind of hiding place. There is only a slight problem.
The rogues are catching her smell and there is only a 20-meter gap between them.
Only hiding place she is fast enough to reach is an old oak in front of her. Maeve starter to climb as high as she could when something grabbed her leg.
She screamed.
It really did hurt when a pair of sharp teeth buried themselves into her calf. The rogue who's teeth are in her leg is hanging on her leg. The wolf gained so much that Maeve's hands started to slip around the thick branch she is holding onto.
She barely has the strength to hold herself but now that more wolves grab her legs there is no chance that she is able to stay in the tree.
Maeve cried in pain as her bottom hit the ground.
A blood. Everything she could see is blood. Twenty pairs of bloody teeth smiled towards her. She is going to be their lunch and there is no way she will survive. Her sister had to be wrong. If it is not her time then why on earth she is lying in a bloody round with twenty hungry wolves.
"P-please." She whispered.
She really does hope that they will kill her fast. Just when the biggest one of the rogues was attacking towards her head something threw it away.
A giant black wolf stood in front of her.
That wolf started to rip the rogues necks that Maeve started to feel sick. Maybe it was because the blood she lost, but the sight in front of her is inhumane. Few rogues escaped their tail between their legs.
But now that the horse sized wolf has killed the rogues is he going to kill her?
Maeve isn't going to stay waiting for her neck to be ripped out. She started to run as fast she could with her injured legs. But so did the gigantic wolf.
"N-NO P-PLE-PLEASE DON'T!!"
"Leave m-me a-alone."
And that's when the wolf shapeshifted into his human form. Suddenly Maeve is staring right to smokey grey eyes.

8 87In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.

Just dig, baby. Stranded in a mountaintop suburb monitored by military drones and plagued by wildlife and weather gone crazy, Dezzy and his teenaged neighbour, Sonia, are just trying to save their homes from the next megafires – by digging the biggest, deepest, most badass swimming pool possible. A chlorinated moat at the edge of their derelict suburb that might also provide a refreshing dip in between raging infernos. Only they dig up more than they bargained for, a hell of a lot more.
